They're around because we have been propping them up though. It's not like they've overcome all odds and overcame this invasion in a heroic fashion. It's our tax dollars at work.
We could have them at a negotiating table in a matter of days. It's going to end at one anyways, if we don't all kill ourselves with nukes first. I support peace talks.
This completely and utterly ignores the other nations who have been supporting Ukraine, and who would continue supporting Ukraine no matter what parts of the US public thinks.
Particularly the UK, who decided to train F-16 pilots for Ukraine sooner than DC wanted, have given Ukraine very potent cruise missiles on top of plenty of other military aid, and hosted training for Ukrainian soldiers learning NATO kit.
It also ignores Turkey/Erdogan, who have come out as major supporters of Ukraine both diplomatically and militarily, and the aid South Korea and Japan have been sending, plus Poland and the Baltics and Romania supporting Ukraine to the hilt because they remember what it was like to be under Moscow's rule.
Russia has been reduced to relying on Iran and North Korea for weapons manufacturing and help dodging sanctions, and even Kazahkstan is snubbing Moscow now while supporting Ukraine.
So you write terms and conditions into the peace plan to prevent that, and also build up your own deterrent in the years of peace.
They're going to end up at a negotiating table signing away stuff eventually anyways. How many Ukrainians and Russians needs to die until that happens? How long does the world need to sit on the brink of nuclear extermination for this to happen?
There was already a deal in place to protect Ukraine after it returned the USSR's nukes; Putin ignored said deal and openly said he would not honor it because Yeltsin signed it but 'never passed it through the Duma'.
Moscow also ignored both Minsk agreements, and has proven time and again that Russia will only negotiate in good faith with a metaphorical/literal gun to their heads. NATO Article 5 is the only reason the Baltics and POland were not the first targets, instead of Ukraine.
And guess what, we've been 'sitting on the brink of nuclear war' for decades; nothing about assisting Ukraine or letting them into NATO will change that, but abandoning Ukraine will signal to Russia that nuclear threats on top of conventional campaigns will absolutely allow Russia to do what it wants.
We abandon Ukraine, Putin will send 10 guys to Poland, and say 'surrender or we nuke you', and then NATO and Article 5 will either end up in a war situation, or NATO will cease to exist as an organization.
