Turn 60 - She Answers With Her Staff

There’s a bit of excitement in the palace, as you are awakened in the middle of the night by the fire alarm of all things going off. Your security detachment hustles you and Willis off to a secure area.

There was a fire, but it was nowhere near the living area. A fire had broken out in the storeroom serving one of the Palace gift shops in the public area of the complex. The shop had been closed at the time. The fire was particularly annoying because it was a battery fire, as a damaged battery had somehow caught fire, which had ignited other batteries stored in the same area. The fire suppression system had to extinguish the blaze two dozen times before it was finally fully dealt with.

Investigation shows that the box containing the battery which ignited had been dropped at some point by an automated inventory management robotic system. There was no visually apparent damage to the packaging, so the box had simply been stored in the warehouse. A day later it ignited, as the battery had suffered a pinhole penetration that had been missed.

And it was one of the neat Eagle models too.

Diagnostics are done on the entire system as a precaution. Maintenance logs are up to date, and there is absolutely no sign of any malfeasance. It just looks like a freak accident, and thankfully nobody was hurt even if the gift shop’s insurance has taken a hit.

Well, apart from losing sleep that night anyways. You are almost certain that you didn’t bite anybody's head off all day, and feel quite virtuous.

That determination to behave yourself is sorely tested when you see a number of proposals from the Imperial Parliament.

None have actually passed yet, but are being hotly debated. The recent economic fluctuations and corrections have caused some interesting turmoil in the job markets, with some people claiming that the extremely generous unemployment and social safety net provisions are causing issues due to people preferring to remain on them for longer rather than accepting lower paying work. As a consequence, while there are plenty of jobs open, they tend to go unfilled as people wait for higher level jobs that may or may not appear in that particular market segment.

Needless to say this is highly controversial. The unemployment and safety net provisions are carefully designed to keep people from staying static and simply living off of them, with educational and training requirements intended to keep people prepared for the workforce. The critics are claiming that this isn’t enough, that the benefits need to be cut back in order to make it less attractive to people to remain on them for extended periods of time. The current system does slowly scale benefits down over time in order to do just that, but the critics are wanting the starting point to be 50% of the current percentage of income. They are also wanting to accelerate the depreciation of benefits so that they zero out after a year unless the beneficiary is enrolled full time in university level classes for an initial degree or an initial graduate degree.

A second proposal, which is also in committee at this time, regards colonial development.

Proponents of the proposal argue that currently many of the new settlements and systems that have been incorporated into the Griffon Empire are barely contributing to the prosperity and defense of the Empire as a whole, for the simple reason that they are at best lightly developed and settled, and in some cases are flapping exposed in the breeze. They point to the significant revenues brought in by Imperial taxation and argue that it would be appropriate for the Empire to substantially invest in developing those systems that currently are not part of the ‘Core’, namely not Griffin’s Roost nor Nowy Gdansk.

As such they propose a funding scheme that would reduce the effective Imperial Tax Rate by 5%, but would substantially increase GDP and POP growth on all non-core systems. In the short term this would reduce the funds available to you for your budgets, but in the long term substantially strengthen the Empire as a whole by reducing wealth and industrial disparities between the current Core and the Colonies.

The Eldest is in favor of this, as is your daughter Sarah, both noting that the massive economic gulf between the central worlds of the Terran Alliance and the more remote colonies was one of the major drivers which saw the initial fracturing of the Inner Sphere. Avoiding such mistakes now could only profit you in the long term.

The final proposal from Parliament is more in the nature of a bill being advanced which would mandate that all systems in the Empire have a mix of HPG, Defense, and Recharge stations ‘as soon as practicable’, as well as requiring annual reports on the status of garrison forces on all planets controlled by the Empire.

Considering that this is something you want to do anyways it doesn’t seem to be that far out there, although the bill has been advanced by some individuals who seem a bit more enamored with their own potential power and prestige than the good of the Empire itself.

    Turn 60 - A Sacrifice Is Offered

You receive reports from the civil war torn NRI. The ‘leader’ of the Pugnus Deorum has declared himself to be Rex Deorum and taken the name Divus Augustus, or ‘the Divine Augustus’. He has ordered that temples to his worship be built ‘per Imperium’, or throughout his Empire, and that all who fail to offer sacrifices and tithes to his name are to be crucified.

The last sputtering remnants of the Pugnus Deorum on Tarentum have been annihilated. The planetary Proconsuls have been acclaimed as the rightful Consuls of the NRI by the loyalist Legions. Fighting continues on Ravenna, with your forces engaged in orbital strikes on rebel forces in support of loyalist units. You have full control over the Zenith jump points of both Nova Roma and Ravenna, and complete control of Tarentum. Rebel forces have sufficient dropships clustered at the Nadir of both Nova Roma and Ravenna that your forward commanders have declined to contest the Nadir points, while preserving orbital superiority over both Nova Roma and Ravenna.

The military proposes Operation Dragonbreath, a massive strike on Ravenna to relieve the loyalist forces, thus isolating the Pugnus Deorum to Nova Roma itself. 2nd Armored Division and 2nd Infantry Division would be earmarked for the strike, with support from veteral loyalist legions from Tarentum.
    []Approve Operation Dragonbreath
    []Deny Operation Dragonbreath

Back home, the Imperial Grifftiger Mounted Police have broken up a major crime ring on Nowy Gdansk that had been engaged in smuggling, money laundering, unlicensed prostitution, protection rackets, and the like. About 30 people have been arrested on a variety of charges and the cases are moving through the justice system.

What makes this a bit unusual is that there was a bit of a multi-agency pile up in the middle of the actual bust, with undercover agents from the IGMP and the Special Branch nearly coming to blows before following the identification procedures and defusing the potential blue on blue scenario. Both forces had been fully briefed on the presence of undercover operatives from the other, with proper identification procedures in place, but in the chaos of the actual bust there was almost an incident in a dark warehouse. A quasi-legal rave had been going on in a lightly partitioned off section of the building, and the incredibly loud music had caused the Special Branch operative to be unable to make out the challenge from the IGMP agent, but fortunately both agencies had planned ahead and included a visual challenge/response sequence as well which prevented tragedy.

You wind up giving both agencies a nice pat on the back for this one.

And then it was budget time, your most favoritest time of year, hurray!

General Stewart starts things off, although Jeremy is there as well for Ground Forces.

“Your Majesty, we continue to need more production capacity, especially for our ground forces. Our responsibilities have significantly broadened and we need to provide proper garrisons to three new planets yesterday, if not sooner. We strongly recommend building additional mech factories anywhere we can fit them, as well as additional endo-steel, double heat sink, and ferro-fibrous production. In addition, we now are able to produce Ferro-Carbide armor, which is currently only useful on HMS Morristown and the new recharge station design.”

Jeremy then takes the podium, grinning slightly. “Your Majesty, I’m going to keep this simple. Wants Mechs, tanks, and infantry, gives it to us?” a laugh echoes around the conference room as he brings up a display. “First, desired mech procurement.”

Armored Cavalry Regiment14th Brigade, 2nd Armored
Light Horse Regiment35th Brigade, 1st Infantry
    Assault Regiment25th Brigade, 3rd Armored

“And for vehicles…” he brings up the next display.
    Armored Regiment13rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry
Mechanized Regiment31st Brigade 3rd Armored and 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry
    SpecOps Regiment11st Brigade, 3rd Armored
CAS Regiment84th Brigade, 2nd Infantry, 2nd and 3rd Colonial Division
Colonial Infantry Regiment122nd and 3rd Colonial Division
Colonial Cavalry Regiment62nd and 3rd Colonial Division
Colonial Mechanized Regiment62nd and 3rd Colonial Division

“If we must cut costs, Your Majesty, I recommend cutting the Armored, Mechanized, SpecOps and 1 of the CAS regiments, 3rd Armored and 2nd Infantry can wait, but we need basic garrison forces for Calliope IV and the TTP as soon as possible, and Colonial Divisions are the least resource intensive means for us to do just that.”

General Reyes then steps up, and activates her Powerpoint like a Pro, which is appropriate, since it’s Powerpoint Pro 2990, which Powerpoint Pros use, and General Reyes is certainly a Powerpoint Pro.

“Your Majesty, thankfully none of the ship’s commissioning this year require air wings, however we do need to build ASF forces on our new possessions, especially the TTP. To that end, we recommend the procurement of a pair of Planetary Garrison Wings for the TTP.”

She said very little… in five slides of Powerpoint. Truly a Powerpoint Pro of legend!

You manage to wake yourself up in time for Admiral Benjamin to slide behind the lectern like a boss, his poor aides trailing him, this time dressed up in the most over the top Dress Mess uniform you’ve ever seen, that looks like something you’d expect to see in parodies of ancient Earth tin-pot dictatorships.

“Your Majesty, great news!” He begins, his usual highly energetic self, as one aide takes out a tiny trumpet and plays a tootling fanfare that has Bastet and Sekhmet pinning their ears back. “We have a bunch of building slips available, and want to build things that will let General Reyes include more pages in her next presentation!”

“For regular dropships we are going to be focusing for a few years on transports and logistics platforms, as our light dropship units are in fairly solid shape. For our large dropships we are balancing expanding our combat power and boosting our transport capabilities.” he explains, then departs the podium to another fanfare from his aide.

General Stewart takes the podium once more “Your Majesty, right now we are having to focus on filling out units and continuing to expand our striking and defensive capabilities. Now is not the time to take the foot off of the gas when it comes to strategic material production expansion, additional factory development, and force production.”

And then it’s the Perky One Herself! Bridget is practically vibrating in her chair. “Your Majesty! We can finally build HPG stations! And we really should build them, because they are very critical to boosting our overall economy. The more planets we link into our communication grid, and the more robust said grid is, the greater the economic benefit. This doesn’t even begin to go into the benefits to military coordination, early warning, diplomatic communication, and everything else having a reliable FTL communications network gives us. We also now have the ability to focus development on Nowa Warszawa, Calliope IV, and the TTP, which will allow us to develop those planets and systems more rapidly.”

She sits back down, still vibrating.

Isoroku is up next, his zen calm a welcome relief from the high energy Interior Minister. “Your Majesty, this year we are holding the Pan Griffon Games, which are going rather well even if they are rather sparsely attended than in years past. Hopefully this will boost the performance of our teams in the next full Olympiad! Next time around, athletes from Nowa Warszawa, Calliope IV, and the TTP will be invited to attend, broadening our competitive pool. In addition, the New Rasalhague Republic has invited us to expand our diplomatic presence in their polity by opening satellite consulates on all of their worlds. We recommend that we take advantage of this opportunity.”

Jake then takes the podium as Isoroku sits down. “Well, Your Majesty, we’ve got a lot of work in the Politics end, which will yield some impressive results down the road. First of all, we need to properly integrate the TTP and Calliope IV. While the TTP will remain internally autonomous, we do need to build an administrative structure for Imperial oversight and assistance. In addition, we need to extend our education system into our new possessions, thus boosting our pool of well-educated citizens and opening up opportunities for additional R&D centers throughout the Empire.”

Mary nods to Jake as he takes his seat and she brings up her custom presentation software. “Your Majesty, as Jake said, once we bring the various educational systems up to par with our own, we’ll be able to open new R&D centers, boosting our research capability significantly. In addition, we are tentatively ready to begin researching the design and construction of proper ‘Castle Brian’ fortifications. Our recommendations for research are as follows.
    • Military Research
      • Improved XL Fusion Engine
        • More compact fusion engines will reduce the vulnerability of our mechs to side torso penetration
      • Improved SRM
        • While we make little use overall of the SRM, this is a relatively inexpensive project that may be of value for future battle armor designs
      • Improved Large Pulse Laser
        • Would benefit several of our AAA vehicles as well as Dropship point defenses
    • Non Military Research
      • Improved Automation 6
        • The economic boost alone makes this extremely valuable
      • Integrated CASE
        • Is primarily useful for Mechs, especially in conjunction with the more compact fusion cores
      • Land-Air Mech
        • These would theoretically make excellent recon and special forces assets
      • MASC
        • Would make our light mechs situationally faster

Harry is actually off world, overseeing the new POW camps on Nowa Warszawa. His assistant however has a number of recommendations from Intelligence. “Your Majesty, with our new acquisitions it is vital that we expand our COINTEL capabilities to Calliope IV and the TTP. This will help prevent any remaining enemy assets from causing us trouble in the future.”

Janet, finally, is looking tired, harassed, and like she’s having the time of her life. “Your Majesty, we’re growing fast, and with that our legal system needs to expand and prepare. We need to expand directly on Calliope IV, while we really need to begin a full review of the TTP’s law codes in order to ensure compliance with the treaty. Siriwan has been very amenable to our requests for information, but is hardly a lawyer as she has absolutely no ‘legal’ background. Although…” your best friend smirks at you “I do believe your granddaughter is taking pre-law classes, which may soon fill that gap.”

    Operational Report - Operation Dragonbreath

Combat operations do not begin until early December, giving 2nd Armored and 2nd Infantry time to integrate in new sub units prior to combat operations beginning on December 3rd. The escort echelon of Majestics and Shannons clear the Nadir jump point prior to the arrival of the main body to a pirate point close to Ravenna III.

Initial landings are heavily contested, however a mix of orbital bombardment and superior numbers and equipment allow 2nd Armored to easily secure a landing zone. By the end of the month a secure planetary foothold has been achieved, with loyalist NRI legions actively suppressing Pugnus Deorum insurgents. Large numbers of loyalist civilians have been fleeing into the secured zone as rebel atrocities start to mount with the fury of desperation.

Jeremy reports that he expects combat operations to wrap up in the May/June time frame of next year based on the progress to date, but admits that this is possibly a conservative estimate. So far rebel forces are continuing ‘conventional’ resistance, if they switch to a guerrilla strategy the active phase of combat operations may end much more quickly, but suppressing the rebels would become far harder overall. Thankfully the NRI loyalists are fully invested in that side of the operation.

    -----

There is unusually cold weather on Griffin’s Roost this winter, with snow actually falling in Griffsport for only the second time since records were kept for the capital. Granted it never actually reaches the ground, melting to rain a few feet up, but you do have the novel experience of white flurries drifting through the sky.

The cause was the jet stream dipping south and bringing a blast of moist arctic air with it, a few hours after the ‘snow’ it was in the low 20’s Celsius, and was a typically mild and beautiful winter day in Griffsport.

On the flip side, the same arctic front dumped freezing rain and slush on the testing area along the north coast of Castor where the final acceptance trials for the MASC system were taking place. Both test pilots somehow managed to slip and fall, and were nursing concussions and badly bruised backsides as a consequence, stalling final testing of the new system until next year.

You do take your grandkids on a winter retreat to a resort on Nowy Gdansk, where the younger grandkids seem to take inordinate pleasure in refighting the Great Snowball War. You, of course, have plenty of hot cocoa, brownies, and other sweets, all calculated to keep the grandkids as riled up as possible for your kids to handle.

You are such a loving and considerate ba.

You do manage to keep from smirking or giving the game away when you ‘coincidently’ wander past Siriwan and Lisa ‘engaged in deep philosophical discussions’ in the chalets lounge. You most certainly did not take blackmail photos of the pair, their whining and complaining notwithstanding. You certainly are not planning on someday showing said nonexistent blackmail photos to future great grandkids.

You do hear from Willis that Lee Industries has evidently purchased one of the Light Battlemech Factory complexes on Griffon IV and is investing heavily into upgrading them to full regimental production. They currently are producing spare parts to support existing units, but the expansion plans will allow them to build full new-build mechs as well in the near future, although the next phase of expansion will rely on Imperial backing, just to keep the stockholders happy.

They’ve also invested heavily in the new plants on Nowa Warszawa, allowing for greater progress to be made on their construction than otherwise, with the extra funding also allowing for some serious refurbishment work on several nearby residential blocks for worker housing.

You spend quite a bit of time attending various keel laying and commissioning ceremonies, accompanied by Admiral Benjamin. The old Admiral broaches several topics with you during this time.

First of all, his staff is recommending shifting all of the First and Second generation combat dropships to training and rear area garrison roles, replacing all of them with a mix of Bainbridge and Shannon class vessels. The older vessels have seen hard service, are generally less efficient, are harder to maintain and have poorer crew accommodations. He also wants to turn the Colchesters over to the Space Guard, to be converted into system tugs, on the grounds that experience has shown that the Bainbridge class fulfills the same role at a lower price point and far higher efficiency and that the excessive maintenance costs of the class make it difficult to justify keeping it in service.

And then the bombshell, he plans to retire next year. He’s been in the military for 50 years and feels that it is time for a younger back to carry the burden of Admiralty. Plus he wants to spend more time with his grandkids. He promises to get you a list of recommended replacements as soon as possible, which in your experience has you bracing for something flamboyantly spectacular. Probably including kazoos, now that you think about it.

You get reports on the expanded strategic material production numbers, which are looking rather promising. You can’t take your foot off the gas in that regard, as production levels are also increasing which will no doubt stress the new strategic production.

The two new Colonial Divisions and the associated Planetary Defense Wings have been dispatched. Third Armored has started to take shape, and you need to find an appropriate CO for the three new units.

For the Colonial Divisions you have a fairly wide pool of qualified officers. Most are a bit young for their rank, an artifact of the rapid expansion of the military, but according to their files all should be quite capable of the job.

There was a bit of a scare at the Refit yard during the expansion work when a faulty indicator light seemed to indicate an imminent catastrophic overpressure event, but luckily it was just that the wrong lead had been connected to the wrong indicator at the factory and QA had missed it. A 10 second rewiring job had it all corrected and everybody involved breathed a massive sigh of relief. The expansion is completed on schedule.

The yards have also all been expanded on schedule, with construction crews smoothly slotting the new yard modules into place and hooking everything up properly.

A number of consulates have been established in the NRR, expanding your presence there. Now that you’ve developed HPGs the NRR is very interested in being tied into the HPG network and, grudgingly, is willing to allow you to control the system in their space despite institutional memories of how Comstar operates.

New government offices have been opened on Calliope IV and in the TTP. The significant increase in staff is allowing Jake to establish new teams to tackle political tasks Empire wide.

Likewise, COINTEL procedures have been put in place in both the TTP and Calliope IV and have already started yielding some results. A number of potential ISB agents have been caught in the TTP thanks to the security screening protocols, investigations are ongoing to verify whether or not they are as innocent as they claim to be.

Work on integrated CASE systems has gone very well indeed, with the new more streamlined equipment successfully completing trials. Refitting the new systems onto existing platforms will be… problematic, however, and work is proceeding on developing methods for doing just that.

The brightest spot of the year, however, comes from the immense surge in durable goods orders throughout the Empire as the latest automation technologies are released to the public. Until Q4 of the year the economy had been, at best, moribund, with plenty of signals for a recession, but thanks to the massive order surge, the economic correction appears to have been held off for another year of growth.

Turn 61 - The Sun rose over the wasteland

Combat continues on Ravenna as the rebel legions continue to fight back conventionally against 2nd Armored and 2nd Infantry Divisions rather than shifting to guerrilla tactics. The latest report from Jeremy indicates that his staff believes that Pugnus Deorum support is too thin amongst the NRI civilian population for the rebels to successfully blend in, and it appears that the rebel commanders agree with that assessment considering their tactics.

Rebel forces seem to spend more effort on massacring civilian populations caught behind their lines than in digging in against Jeremy’s units, and he has been making them pay with interest for that posture. In consultation with the local loyalist NRI authorities he has declared the Pugnus Deorum to be hostis humani generis and thus outside the typical rules of war, prisoners are to be immediately examined by loyalist authorities and, if no mitigating circumstances of coercion are found, executed as no better than pirates.

On Nowa Warszawa rebuilding continues, although the full extent of the environmental damage caused by decades of Kuritan exploitation are seriously stymying recovery efforts. The locals are lobbying to host the next Olympics held in Griffon space, however, in a show of planetary civic pride, with local governments already financing the construction of facilities. The 2992 Olympics are scheduled to be held in the NRR, specifically on Gotland, so the Nowa Warszawans would have 5 years to get ready.

You had originally planned to hold the 2996 games on Griffon IV, and the locals there are also lobbying for the Games to remain. The rivalry seems to be rather good-natured, thankfully. There’s also some discussion of splitting the difference, holding both a Winter and a Summer Games in 2996, which has the enthusiastic approval of the NRR.

On Calliope IV integration is going quite smoothly. Exports of high quality clockwork watches and devices have become a highly sought after luxury good among the wealthy in the Griffon system. Indeed, you now have a truly lovely clockwork cuckoo clock in your office that is 100% mechanical yet keeps exquisitely precise time so long as it is properly wound once a day. Your grandkids find it enormous fun to wind the massive clock, so so far it has not been a problem to keep it perfectly set.

Some militia officers from Calliope IV have brought examples of ‘steam bikes’ with them to maneuvers, and have been gleefully showing them off. They are actually more accurately described as trikes and in inexpert hands are incredibly dangerous and unstable, but driven by somebody who knows what they are doing they are quite the sight. Evidently it is tradition back on Calliope IV to hand-build these to ‘family’ designs, but several of these officers have had the bright idea to go into partnership with some small motorcycle design firms on Griffin’s Roost to produce modernized mass-production steam bikes with actual safety systems and steam engines that are actually engineered properly and not built with ‘rules of thumb’ and ‘it didn’t blow up this time so it’s good enough’.

And of course they decided to present one to you, hoping that you’ll endorse the product. Sergeant-Major Ngo promptly stomps all over your anticipated fun and insists on having it be tested thoroughly by the Imperial Guard before letting you even touch it, the killjoy. They aren’t nearly as fast and agile as your favorite bikes, but you do find yourself grinding your teeth as you watch the good Sergeant-Major getting to ride it before you do.

You are rather impressed, though, because the design somehow went from what looked like a hand-built piece of ironwork that was almost as large as an ordinary car and looked fit for the next apocalypse, to something incredibly sleek and modern while retaining a definite ‘steampunk’ vibe.

    9LhLkKSK5izxoEhT9sQuM9-c6Z6tP094f_32FHidQqpfww3Y-xxei266yb3RbonmsqR8mOQXITgz4tdfNAtODtZKQUWpCcBJE2nR8Dtz2IYeamFas_j7DLchASVCQz9TmIDtrBGY

You are finally allowed to ride the thing and indeed have just as much fun as you had anticipated. It’s hardly a practical vehicle, but as a fun toy it would definitely have a nice little market niche, especially as the company is proposing to build them on Calliope IV using local artisans as part of the efforts to build up the planet's economy. Almost everything on the bike, apart from the electronics package, can be easily produced out of local talent and tooling on Calliope IV, and the electronics package has been deliberately designed to be a simple ‘black box’ plug and play installation.

The boiling lava surface of Griffon II has become even more active of late, sending streamers of lava high into the atmosphere as the few bits of barely solid crust sink down into the magma. Radiation levels have risen, as radioactive rock from deep within the core of the planet are being churned upwards by the lava currents, exposing valuable deposits of radioactive minerals. This has resulted in a massive boom in mineral extraction profitability for the Griffon II Orbitals.

In the Griffon Inner Asteroid Belt a derelict satellite that dates back to the founding of the colony has been discovered. It is completely non-functional and appears to have been a simple comm satellite deposited by the initial colonization efforts. There is no usable data in the memory core, as the core had been thoroughly smashed by a long ago impact. The satellite has been recovered and plans are to display it in the Griffon Aerospace Museum in Griffsport.

A group of entrepreneurs have approached the Colonial Office with a proposal to build several small mining stations orbiting the various moons of Griffon VI. Their analysis, however, appears to be highly optimistic in regards to exploiting the moons, especially considering the high radioactivity of Griffon VI itself. The Colonial Office has denied the application for now, but has forwarded a recommendation to you that this is something that DoME might be interested in. DoME informs you that further research into terraforming techniques and planetary engineering would be required before they could do anything useful around Griffon VI.

There have been a number of pirate attacks on convoys supplying your forces in the NRI, at both New Capricorn and Griff’s Leap. So far your escort forces have been able to handily dispatch the pirates with negligible damage, but the attacks are slowly increasing in frequency and severity. There are recommendations to establish fortified outposts in both systems to secure the trade lanes. The ‘easiest’, albeit most expensive, means of doing this would be to purchase a pair of White Tower modular defense stations to deploy, but there are other options, although they would require full surveys of the systems and the possible establishment of colonies there.

Admiral Benjamin, meanwhile, hands in the ‘list’ of prospective replacements. Initially you are rather dismayed, as the aide delivers a stack of folders over 6 feet in height, with each folder being easily an inch thick.

You quickly realize that every single folder contains the same officer’s service record, your daughter Thanh’s service record, to be precise.

You are almost certain that your daughter’s ears are burning as you laugh uproariously.

Your prediction proved accurate, as Thanh is highly indignant when she discovers that Admiral Benjamin had recommended her for the CNO slot. The whining is not quite to the level as it was when she got shifted from ASF to Dropship duty, but is still rather impressive. You do get the sense she’s doing it for show, however, because you caught her and her wife discussing spending more time with the kids, and she hasn’t once threatened you with loss of ba privileges with her brood.

You get some reports from Griffon IV, folks are a bit disgruntled about losing out on the next Olympics, but it’s only minor grumbling at this point. The organizers are more sanguine, as the new facilities do put them at the top of the running for the next Pan-Griffon Games and future Olympiads.

You receive more dispatches from Jeremy, he is anticipating wrapping up primary combat operations on Ravenna by the end of May. Rebel forces have pulled back to their final stronghold around the old planetary capital and his forces have fully surrounded them. Local civilians have proven very enthusiastic at pointing out the few rebel soldiers who have tried to hide amidst the loyalist population, and rebel hanging parties are quite the rage. Jeremy has managed to convince the NRI leadership that crucifying them might send the wrong sort of message.

Rebel ASF forces on Nova Roma have attempted to break the orbital blockade but only succeeded in getting slaughtered in job lots, it appears that the rebels failed to subvert any actual ASF units but are instead sending up barely trained pilots of their own who are little more than targets for the experienced ASF pilots of the blockading force.

In happier, non-war news, the head of the Exploration Branch is petitioning to be allowed to survey the system designated GX-C9, which lies directly ‘above’ you and is only a single jump away. He would also like to send an expedition to perform a more in-depth survey of New Capricorn with an eye towards colonization. They already know that there appears to be at least one habitable planet in the system, but they’d like to check and see if there’s anything more useful there than merely the location along the direct route to the NRI.

Meanwhile the Imperial Parliament is ‘hard’ at work. Or hardly working, as the case may be.

Despite the best efforts of the Eldest, the Imperial Senate is allowing it’s newfound prestige to get to its head, and there are multiple bills moving through the Senate intending to curtail your authority and bring more power to the Senate itself. The Eldest is not pleased by this, because the Senate should damn well know better considering how similar power grabs and ended in the past.

For one thing, they want to strip you of your authority over approving new equipment for the military and place that solely in the Senate’s hands, arguing that it is ‘unjust’ for a sole monarch to have such broad-ranging discretion over appropriations and the winners and losers of production contracts. Therefore, they propose setting up a committee that will have absolute authority over deciding what kit the military gets, and completely freezing the Crown out of the process.

There are three ways you could handle this. Just let them get away with it, ceding that authority to the elected Senate, or you could launch an aggressive PR offensive against the Senate over them getting too big for their britches and putting their own self-interest over the smooth functioning of the Empire, or simply put your foot down, dismiss the Senate for the session, and veto the bills, while aggressively campaigning against those Senators who proposed them.

They are also proposing granting themselves the right to decide the Succession for when you finally step down or die in office, rather than primogeniture or allowing the Crown to choose. Some rather sneering comments are made about how Jeremy is a ‘mere Soldier’ who is ‘utterly unsuited for rule’, with some snide statements about how ‘uncouth’ you personally can be when dealing with pompous airheaded twits like the idiot Senators making said comments.

How the Eldest managed to resist the urge to simply bite those idiots in half is beyond you. They’d managed to survive every other shake up in the Senate simply because they hailed from the two wealthiest and most self-indulgent constituencies in the Empire, true ‘old money’, and appear to be functionally immortal. On the (minor) plus side they’d never been even suspected of any illegal activity themselves, had no whiffs of actual scandal around them, but damn are they pompous twits.

There’s no possible way that this one is passing, nobody outside of the pair of idiots pushing it are that stupid, but combined with everything else it is really getting on your wick.

You decide to be a bit subtle in how you handle them. You throw a massive gala on board the royal yacht/ocean liner, a who’s who of the great and good of Griffin’s Roost society… and ‘forget’ to invite either of them or their families. A good time is had by all, and the society pages are having a field day over the snub and you have credible reports that both of the morons have been gnashing their teeth and dealing with very unhappy significant others.

The Chamber of Delegates is being much quieter, especially in regards to potential power plays and such. Instead they have proposed some legislation related to subsidizing internal migration in hopes of boosting the population of more lightly inhabited colonial possessions. The legislation would establish a fund which would help citizens of the Griffon Empire who wish to migrate to a different planet within the empire with financial assistance to finance the move. Backers point out that transportation costs from the Griffon system to, say, Calliope are exceptionally high, making it difficult for talented individuals who might be struggling in the saturated economies of the Griffon system from relocating to Calliope IV and assisting with the economic vitalization and growth there.

Turn 61 - There’s Men of the Cross and the Hammer

You receive some grim news in a dispatch from Nowa Warszawa. An elementary school in a neighborhood that was predominantly former Kuritans has been firebombed and shot up in a drive-by attack by apparent Home Army extremists. A hundred and twenty three kids are either dead or in the hospital with life threatening injuries and a splinter faction of the Home Army has declared responsibility, announcing that they will not cease their attacks until all Kuritans and former Kilburrough slaves are exterminated.

Local law enforcement is already on the case, the garrison has mobilized to assist in the hunt, and mainstream leaders from the Home Army have already unequivocally condemned the attack. Several of the attackers had already, as of the time of the dispatch, been captured or killed resisting capture.

The swift response seems to have prevented any tit-for-tat responses, for now at least, but it appears that the underlying conflict on Nowa Warszawa is still simmering, despite most parties desiring it to simply go away there are lunatics and fanatics who would love to stir the pot.

You also receive a report about an attempted pirate attack on Calliope IV. 2 Tramp jumpships have been captured and the pirates wiped out. Both vessels are former DCMS and based on computer files found on board had been traded to the pirates in exchange for large numbers of pirate ASFs. The two jumpships were in nearly pristine condition despite their great age, as the younger of the two vessels is over three centuries old.

The survey missions to GX-C9 and New Capricorn have been dispatched, the first reports are expected in several months.

The two Caravel jumpships in service are seeing very heavy use ferrying goods and people about. Indeed, your entire Jumpship fleet is extremely stressed, with all vessels in constant use to support operations and the economy. Engineers have developed a dedicated Jumpship production yard system that is far less flexible than the current shipyard design. Effectively, each ‘yard’ module would be able to build a single type of Jumpship and nothing else, albeit a bit slower than the current yard. The upside is that the yard module itself is far faster to build and is 100% stand alone.
TypeCost to Build/Time to BuildProduction Time
    Caravel Yard$20,000,000/1 Year4 years

    • Advantages of conventional modular yard for Jumpship production
      • Less expensive to build overall
      • More flexible, can build any Jumpship class that can fit in the yard bay
      • Faster, average construction time is 2 years
    • Advantages of dedicated unitary yard for Jumpship production
      • Quicker to construct the yard itself (1 year as opposed to up to 10 years for the first Jumpship slip)

The Imperial Senate is not very appreciative of the PR offensive you undertook to ridicule their power grab, with a number of very irate Senators whining that it is just not cricket for the Empress to do so, before being promptly smacked down by being directly confronted over the power grab itself and their self-aggrandizing power play. Needless to say, the Senate gets a rather bloody nose in the public eye. Of course, the Eldest doesn’t help soothe their egos when he adopts the classic Grifftiger smug ‘I told you so and you should have listened to me’ stance, while licking his claws and generally looking like the smuggest giant tiger that ever smugged… smugly.

But now it is time for your favorite yearly entertainment. Budget time! Now with more Thanh action!

General Stewart leads things off. “Your Majesty, as always I will be begging for more expansion of production capacity, for mechs, dropships, and strategic materials. Since General Griffith is off on Ravenna, I will also be handling ground forces.”

She takes a deep breath. “We can build 4 each of Heavy or Assault Mechs, and Light/Medium Mechs, regiments that is. We recommend the following.”
    • 3 Light Horse Regiments to complete the 2nd Infantry Division
    • 1 Pathfinder Regiment to complete 1st Brigade, 3rd Armored Division
    • 1 Assault Regiment to complete 5th Brigade, 3rd Armored Division
    • 3 Standard Mech Regiments to begin filling out the line forces of the 3rd Armored

“For conventional forces, the recent unrest on Nowa Warszawa has led to requests from local commanders for additional Colonial Divisions to be deployed there, and the TTP is requesting a second Colonial Division as well. In addition we would like to start building up 3rd Infantry. Therefore we are requesting the following.”
    • 6 Colonial Mechanized Regiments
    • 6 Colonial Cavalry Regiments
    • 12 Colonial Infantry Regiments
    • 7 CAS Regiments
    • 4 Armored Regiments
    • 4 Mechanized Regiments

“In addition, we believe it is time to start building up the Imperial Guard once more. To that end, we propose the procurement of a single new Imperial Guard Regiment to get the process started.”

She takes a seat, as General Reyes fires up her Powerpoint. You’re tired of making mental jokes about Powerpoint after all these years, the good general still hasn’t learned just how much you loathe seeing that damn logo.

“Your Majesty, we have 2 new carriers commissioning this year and will require a pair of Assault Carrier Wings for them to provide them with the desired striking power. In addition we would like to procure a second Planetary Defense Wing to beef up our defenses of the TTP. Finally we would like to station a Training Wing in the TTP to allow us to recruit from that pool of manpower in the future.”

Then it’s your daughter’s turn, and she’s quite obviously not all that pleased to be stuck in the CNO slot. “Your Majesty, we have multiple priorities at this time. In order, now that we have the capability, we would like to begin construction of Oasis II Heavy Recharge Stations at the Griffon Zenith point, the Nowa Warszawa Zenith point, and the Calliope Zenith point. We also are now responsible for orbital security for the TTP and the easiest way to accomplish this is to procure a pair of White Tower orbital fortresses to place in Planetary Orbit. This will require additional ASF acquisitions as well. We are waiting for full survey information, but we would also recommend placing a White Tower at the New Capricorn Zenith point in order to strengthen our defenses against pirate attack.”

She checks her notes. “As for Dropship procurement, I intend to follow through with Admiral Benjamin’s plans to retire our older platforms. To that end we are recommending the following procurements.”
    • Standard Dropships (24 slips)
      • 24 Bainbridge class Parasite Destroyers
    • Large Dropships (18 slips)
      • 8 Independence class Parasite Carriers
      • 5 Shannon class Parasite Cruisers
      • 5 Majestic class Parasite Battleships
    • Retirement of
      • All Troodon class vessels
      • Upon completion of this years building program
        • All Lightning class vessels
        • All Warrior class vessels
        • All Tyrannosaurus class vessels
        • All Megaraptor class vessels
        • All Devastation class vessels
“All retired vessels will be transferred either to the reserve fleet here in the Griffon system, made available to planetary militias, or transferred to the Aerie for training purposes.”

She looks up from her notes. “In the future I intend to reduce our combat dropships to the Bainbridge, Shannon, Majestic and Independence classes only, retaining HMS Renown and the Royal Sovereigns for special duties only. The PGL and PPG types will be retained for now, but without any new construction of either. The Bainbridge is the smallest dropship that is fully combat worthy, lesser vessels are just nibbling around the edges and are too vulnerable to justify.”

She then sits down rather primly, and General Stewart returns to the podium. “In light of future procurement, we recommend upgrading our ASF production, Mech production, and all strategic materials. We are especially bottlenecked on Ferro Carbide, Ferro Aluminium, and Ferro Fibrous, with a lesser bottleneck on Endo Steel.”

Bridget is as bouncy as ever. “Your Majesty, we have developed a unitary Caravel production yard that can be built in a single piece. Production efficiency is approximately half that of our usual yards, and they are extremely specialized, but they only take a single year to build, allowing us to rapidly boost our production numbers of 4 collar jumpships. Other than that, we stand ready to build whatever you need us to build, wherever you need us to build it!”

Once the Bouncy One sits down, Isoroku takes her place at the podium. “Your Majesty, now that we have HPG capability, I would like permission to open negotiations with both the NRI and the NRR to place HPG facilities in their territory, under our control. This will allow us much faster communication with our allies, with all of the attendant benefits.” He pauses, checking his notes. “In the meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture recommends holding a benefit concert for the victims of the violence on Nowa Warszawa.”

Jake doesn’t bother going to the podium. “Your Majesty, we’d like to see about boosting our support within Parliament, but more importantly we recommend broadening our focus on educational improvements to Calliope IV and the TTP.”

Mary is absent, dealing with some issues in the labs on Nowy Gdansk. Her assistant is present, however. “Your Majesty, we have three research teams ready and waiting. While it is tempting to focus on low hanging fruit, we have a Warship yard coming online next year, and no Warship’s to build in it. We would like to strongly recommend that all three teams are assigned to work on Compact Core technology, so that in five years we’ll be able to start laying down and building our own Warships.”

Harry is off in the TTP working with local COINTEL people, he left a memo advising that he’ll have new recommendations next year, but that this year he recommends simply holding course.

Jane is looking tired but happy, the legal reviews and such she is working on are fun for her. “Your Majesty, the only thing I’d recommend is to consider creating a regulatory framework for commercial jumpships, which will significantly ease the burden on our military fleet by allowing commercial interests to build their own.”

Initial Survey Report - New Capricorn
    Stellar Type - M4
Number of occupied orbits - 7
    1. Giant Terrestrial
      1. Very low density, no atmosphere, highly irradiated
    2. Gas Giant
      1. 7 major moons, 12 minor moons
      2. Very extensive ring system
      3. Extremely vibrant colors with severe atmospheric storms
    3. Gas Giant
      1. 2 marginally habitable moons rich in heavy metals
      2. 5 major moons, 18 minor moons
      3. No significant ring system
      4. Deep blue in color, with light banding of white and red, no major storm activity, unusually weak radiation belts
    4. Terrestrial
      1. 1 major moon
      2. High gravity, approximately 1.3 times Earth standard
      3. Extensive shallow seas and gentle terrain
      4. Native flora - ferns
      5. Native fauna - amphibians
    5. Asteroid Belt
      1. Initial survey indicates mostly rocky asteroids unsuitable for commercial mining
    6. Asteroid Belt
      1. Initial survey indicates mostly rocky and icy asteroids. Ice asteroids may be valuable for terraforming purposes if a means of transport can be devised

There are three colonizable locations in this system. Both of the habitable moons show signs of previous failed colonization attempts that appear to have been destroyed by some 3rd party. New Capricorn IV shows signs of having once been colonized as well, but likewise all that is left are ruins, all indications are that the population was wiped out by some 3rd party. Analysis of damage is consistent with the sorts of weapons used by local pirates

New Capricorn IV is easily colonized, however the two moons would require environmental domes. Samples show no obvious biochemical threats to human life, the ferns are not themselves edible but there are wild fields of crops that appear to be descended from various grains and leafy vegetables which are completely edible. Local fauna is not aggressive, the largest of the local amphibians are about the size of a donkey and appear to be herbivorous. Indications are that the local fauna is able to consume human crops.

    Initial Survey Report - GX-C9
    Stellar Type - M4
Number of Occupied Orbits - 9

    1. Gas Supergiant
      1. Nearly as energetic as the dim star, gives off significant thermal and radioactive emissions
      2. Extremely violent storms visible
      3. 15 major and over a hundred minor moons
      4. Triple ring system, easily visible with the bare eye
    2. Asteroid Belt
      1. Rich in metallic asteroids, higher than average incidence of Germanium ore make this commercially viable
    3. Terrestrial
      1. Marginally habitable
      2. Slightly below Earth standard gravity (approximately .9g)
      3. Thick atmosphere with a relatively high CO2 and water vapor content, breathable but unpleasant

      1. No sign of commercially viable ores
    6. Asteroid Belt
      1. No sign of commercially viable ores
    7. Gas Giant
      1. An ice giant, vibrant blue in color
      2. Thin ring
      3. 12 Major, 17 minor moons
    8. Dwarf terrestrial
      1. Indications of methane oceans underneath methane ice.

GX-C9 has a single colonizable planet, however significant terraforming will be required due to the basic unsuitability of the soil to support crops. The presence of significant germanium deposits, however, makes this an economically viable location.

There is no sign of previous occupation of the planet, however a number of wrecked mining stations were adrift in the innermost asteroid belt, all shattered as if destroyed in combat. Examination of the wreckage shows damage patterns consistent with local pirates.

A small space station was found hiding in the outermost asteroid belt. The station was occupied by pirates and slaves, and was easily stormed by the attached Marine units. The station appears to be a resupply base for pirate bands. Prisoners have been transported to designated holding facilities, the freed slaves are in the hands of medical professionals and are very grateful for their liberation. None are Drac, Kilburrough, or NRI in origin, all are from a primitive society which evidently is used as a raiding target by the pirates, they do not know where their homes are, only that it is at most three jumps away.

You get a really good laugh when you read the reports about the latest shenanigans out of the Department of Periphery Studies. Evidently somebody thought it was a good idea to screen the ancient ‘Star Wars’ movies to the tenured faculty, and at least some of them had decided that they were Jedi and were waving around toy ‘lightsabers’ and making ‘profound’ statements that sense did not make.

Luckily the staff at the Department are able to confine the shenanigans to their own facilities, so there aren’t any actual injuries from ‘acrobatic battles’ and such. So it’s literally all fun and games.

Fighting on Ravenna has wrapped up with the fall of the final stronghold of the Pugnus Deorum on the planet. Friendly casualties have been exceptionally light, mostly thanks to the highly methodical tactics that Jeremy has been employing which have ground down the enemy forces without exposing his own to excessive risk. The local rebel leaders have chosen to commit suicide rather than be captured, but computer files have been recovered giving additional insight into the Pugnus Deorum as a whole.

Planning has begun for a final push to liberate Nova Roma itself from the rebels, while the legitimate government fully establishes control on Ravenna.

There was an attempted Drac raid on Kuroisora, a single Monolith jumped in and released 9 Achilles which thrust in to attempt to strike the planet, evidently carrying nuclear payloads. The single squadron of Bainbridges present in system intercepted the attackers well short of the planet and utterly annihilated them, taking only a few dings and dents in return as the swift parasite destroyers completely outmatched the enemy despite being outnumbered. Unfortunately the Monolith was able to recharge and jump clear before it could be captured.

Pirate activity along the jump route to the NRI is continuing to increase, with every convoy being attacked at either Griff’s Leap or New Capricorn. Escorting forces so far have proven equal to the task of defending the convoys, but the attacks are escalating. Thanh has stationed squadrons of Bainbridges to picket the two systems’ Zenith points to provide additional protection, but in the long run this will not be sustainable due to the logistics requirements.

HMS Morristown has been moved into the Refit and Repair Facility at long last. Preliminary reports are in line with previous survey reports, and work has begun at bringing the old ship back up to fighting trim.

The company that supplies critical components to the life support systems used in many Heavy and Assault class battlemechs has missed their delivery deadlines. A contract dispute with one of the unions at the company has escalated into a full strike action, which has completely disrupted production. Interestingly, the union directly involved in the dispute is one of the smaller ones at the company, representing janitorial personnel, but the other unions have gone on strike in solidarity even though the demands of the janitorial union are completely unreasonable. They claim that they are demanding a ‘living wage’ for their members, but the company has pointed out that this ‘living wage’ is higher than that of the engineers involved in designing the components, and is roughly the same as the salary of a junior vice president at the firm. The other unions acknowledge that the janitorial union is being ridiculous in their demands, but are unwilling to break ranks. Mediators have been brought in from the Imperial government and it is expected that the dispute will be resolved in a month or so, but meanwhile production of Assault and Standard Mech regiments is on hold.

You spend several days visiting the various yards, attending ceremonies for all of the new construction that has been laid down. You also are present at the mass decommissioning ceremony for the Troodon class. The crewmembers of the decommissioned vessels have been shifted to the Bainbridges that are now under construction, providing solid cadres for the vessels and easing the pressure on the Aerie to provide sufficient crews. Several of the old craft have been snapped up by various museums, others have been transferred to planetary defense squadrons run by the various planetary governments in the Griffon system.

The new Planetary Defense Wing has been dispatched to Sukashi to supplement the defenses there. The two new Assault Carrier Wings have mated up with their assigned carriers and have completed working up, and the TTP has welcomed the training wing.

Second Infantry Division is now up to full strength, while 3rd Armored has been affected by the delivery delays of Heavy and Assault mechs, although they have integrated their Pathfinder regiment. The 3rd Infantry Division has stood up and should be at full strength next year. Fourth and Fifth Colonial Divisions have also been fully activated and deployed to their areas of operation, strengthening the defenses of Nowa Warszawa and the TTP.

The economic development staff catches a bit of a break on Griffin’s Roost, as their investment program seems to set off a massive bull market that had been completely unanticipated. Economic growth in the capital world has taken off far beyond even the best case scenarios for the development plan.

The first message sent over the new HPG network, well, apart from the automated test messages, was sent from your desk. A short letter extolling the benefits of improved interstellar communication and congratulating everybody involved in the effort to establish the HPG network. Your economists are already seeing a small but significant economic growth boost thanks to improved communications, benefits which can only rise as the network expands.

The engineers remind you in a memo that it is not only possible but beneficial to build multiple HPG stations on any given world, on the grounds that this increases available bandwidth and throughput, thus strengthening the network as a whole.

Your shipbuilding capacity is continuing to expand, bringing you closer to additional jumpship slips and your first warship capable yard.

DoME has completed work planting and balancing a massive jungle ecosystem on Griffon IV. The trees are still young and nowhere near their full glory, but the beginnings of a jungle are still gloriously beautiful. The effects on the planetary ecosystem are excellent, and the terraforming teams are eager to continue their work fine tuning and shaping the planet's ecology.

Negotiations have been concluded with the NRR and NRI for the future emplacement of HPG stations under Griffon Empire control.

A large benefit concert for the victims of violence on Nowa Warszawa is a success despite some technical challenges when the main stage sound system shorted out during pre-show sound checks. Engineers and technicians scrambled to solve the problem and managed to do so mere minutes before the concert was scheduled to begin, to the enthusiastic applause of the gathered crowds.

The Imperial Senate has proven remarkably immune to being schmoozed, setting back efforts to improve your relations with the body, but the Chamber of Delegates is quite happy to engage with your political team. Jake is frustrated with the Senate, but happy with the Chamber.

The overall improvements and integration of the Nowa Warszawa educational system have been successfully carried out, with results already obvious across all levels. Simply building a robust planetary education data network has yielded enormous results. The educational infrastructure on the planet is now robust enough to potentially support new R&D labs in the future.

Speaking of research and development, work on the improved Short Range Missile has concluded, along with work on MASC. The Improved 8cm Pulse Laser project has also concluded.

Janet shows up in your office, tired but happy. She reports that integration of Calliope IV into the Imperial Legal System has concluded successfully, that the review of the legal system in the TTP has been concluded with the local leadership proving very accommodating with the changes needed to bring it fully in line with Imperial law, and that her legal teams have a preliminary legal and regulatory framework to license private companies to build Caravel class jumpships for commercial purposes.

Turn 62 - Well She Got Her Daddy’s Car

There is another serious pirate attack at Griff’s Leap that is fought off with minor damage. It appears that the pirates are attacking in penny packets, each attack is by a different ‘band’ of pirates, judging by paint schemes and communications chatter, and the pirates are attacking with a level of desperation that doesn’t make all that much sense. Thanks to the ramshackle and shoddy construction of the pirate dropships they are pretty much useless against any sort of proper military dropship, let alone the Bainbridge class pickets. Unfortunately that same fragility makes it impossible to take prisoners for interrogation, as the dropships seem to explode if you look at them sufficiently angrily, let alone fire a subcap weapon at them.

What has been determined is that these are peripheral bands, desperate to make a ‘big score’ to prove themselves in what passes for their society. Ever since you started assisting the NRI the ‘easy times’ for loot and glory for the smaller bands have been over and many of them are on the ropes, as the larger bands prey on them. A few fragments of data indicates that this entire ‘culture’, if you can call it that, is based purely on strength. Corsairs raid, pillage, and bully everybody around them that they can get away with, and only slaves do ‘peasant work’ like farming or mining or manufacturing. And if a given pirate band isn’t confident of their ability to control any given asset they are far more likely to simply destroy it rather than risk it falling into another band’s hands, as anything that strengthens another band is anathema to them.

Cooperation doesn’t appear to be a virtue for these people.

That it also reminds you of the behavior of certain of your politicians and would-be elites is an irony that doesn’t escape you.

The deployment of the new Colonial Division on Nowa Warszawa was fortuitous, as friction between factions there is ramping up rapidly once more. The primary driver of the violence this time around are Home Army extremists. It is frustrating that they are doing it with equipment you’d given the Home Army. Thankfully the Home Army leadership cadres have been extremely helpful in assisting with tracking down the radicals and helping the authorities deal with them, which is just about the only thing keeping the situation from exploding into even greater violence.

But tit-for-tat attacks are driving up the death toll and making it difficult to get anything constructive done. Home Army extremists shoot up a former Drac neighborhood, ex-Drac radicals then toss firebombs at Polish neighborhoods. Then the Home Army radicals use the firebombs as an excuse to shoot up another former Drac area. The new Colonial Division is doing yeoman work keeping the factions separated.

There has been a proposal that has gotten kicked up to your desk for dealing with this. Namely expanding the Imperial Grifftiger Mounted Police and deploying the new units to Nowa Warszawa. The memo was written by a young private in the Colonial Division assigned to Nowa Warszawa who apparently grew up with a grifftiger companion, and who points out that the big cats could well have a salubrious effect on keeping things under control. After all, who’s going to argue with 20 tons of claws and fangs?

Bastet is all for this, as is Sekhmet. The Eldest, when consulted, sees nothing wrong and only laments that he is far too large to go visit himself and express his displeasure with the radicals in person.

Meanwhile the Pan Griffon Games have begun, for the first time featuring athletes from outside the Griffon system itself, notably teams from Nowa Warszawa and the TTP. With the far broader athlete pool, the Griffon Olympic Committee is looking forward to addressing weaknesses and finding more talent for the upcoming games in two years.

The initial events, both men’s and women’s athletics, both show the Griffon and TTP teams dominating, with the Griffon team coming out on top of each. The Nowa Warszawa athletes struggle in these events, although most of their issues appear to be a combination of bad luck and simply not being up to the same standard as the others.

In Men’s Gymnastics the Griffon Team manages a bare victory of the TTP team, with a standard of competition well above that seen in the past from Griffon gymnastics. However in the women’s event a young gymnast from Sukaishi who made the age cut off by two days is a standout sensation, performing so far above her older peers that there is serious talk about her being a superstar in the sport before she’s even had her sweet sixteen.

The Nowa Warszawan women’s gymnasts manage to score their teams first silver of the competition, edging out the Griffon women. In the team event, however, the team synergy between the Nowa Warszawans manages a convincing victory, since the TTP phenom wasn’t on the team roster.

In the swimming events the Griffon and TTP teams trade off victories, with the Nowa Warszawans managing a silver medal in the women’s event barely edging out the Griffon women.

One evening during the games you, purely by accident, happen across your granddaughter and Siriwan celebrating a TTP win with a very lewd display of hand holding and absolutely lascivious cuddling. With you catching them red handed, the two finally admit to you that they’re dating and trying to think of a way to ask your blessing for their relationship.

You manage to keep them guessing (and sweating) for approximately a half second before your grin spoils it. After all, you didn’t have that much time until midnight, and if you waited too long then you’d lose your wager in the betting pool.

That’s your story and you are sticking to it.

Not that you think they make a wonderfully cute couple, and with the iron wombs you can even get great-grandbabies out of this. Isn’t that a thought!

You are also presented with plans for future colonization efforts.

Colonizing New Capricorn would help secure your jumpship route to the NRI and the system itself offers multiple potential colonization sites. Colonizing GX-C9 would help secure your northern flank against potential attacks while preventing the NRR from potentially outflanking you there if they decide to expand now that they are no longer in a death grapple with the Dracs.

    Therefore you have several options.

Initial colonization of New Capricorn would take 3 years, focusing on the terrestrial planet first with the inhabitable moons coming afterwards. The initial phase would tie down one of your Enterprise-A class vessels in detailed scouting. A White Tower system defense fortress would be built in orbit of New Capricorn IV along with a full complement of ASFs and several flights of PPG-01’s.

Initial colonization of GX-C9 would take 5 years. The initial phase would be the same as with New Capricorn, but DoME teams would be required for the initial construction of colony domes.

Actual costs to colonize the two are actually comparable, at least in the initial phases. GX-C9 would require more overall work down the road, mostly from DoME, but would potentially be the wealthier system overall due to the presence of large Germanium asteroid deposits.

The kicker comes in the jumpship requirements to support colonization efforts. It is possible to colonize one or the other without jeopardizing the space lift required for operations against Nova Roma, but trying to do both would preclude such operations until at least two additional Caravel class jumpships are in service.

Initial recruitment and training of the additions to the Imperial Grifftiger Mounted Police are going quite well, by next year they should be deploying to Nowa Warszawa.

That’s some good news, making up for the shitstorm that has blown up in the Imperial Parliament.

This year the new delegates and senators from Nowa Warszawa, the TTP and Calliope IV are going to be seated, or at least that was the intention. Nowa Warszawa and Calliope are guaranteed seats due to being fully part of the Empire, while the TTP has a single courtesy seat in each body to give them some representation, albeit not at the same level as a full member of the Empire.

It might be more accurate to say ‘were going to be seated’, because quite suddenly both the Chamber of Delegates and the Senate have gone into full obstruction mode, objecting to allowing any of the new delegates and senators to take their seats and refusing to accept their credentials. It’s not a majority in either chamber, but an extremely vocal minority is completely stalling everything, especially as several of the objections and slow rolling are coming from Committees gumming up the works.

The politicians are demanding sweeping concessions, that the new Senators and Delegates not be allowed to vote on ‘matters of substance’ for a decade, that the Crown grant additional powers and authority to the Senate and Chamber, pork barreling at an epic scale in demanding Imperial funding for various projects that solely benefit said politicians, etc.

The Eldest is furious, but has his own difficulties in that the dissident Senators are using various parliamentary tricks to keep him from effectively interfering in their various obstructive schemes. And the media is not helping, with only your in-house media organs reporting things in a way that doesn’t make it look like ‘heroic David’s facing Goliath.’

You can probably ride this out, your popular support is much higher than Parliament’s, but it will cost you political capital to do so. And you can pretty much kiss goodbye anything helpful or useful out of Parliament for a while.

The demands they are making are completely unreasonable, and the fact that their grandstanding and opportunism is in direct defiance of the Imperial Charter gives you a number of excellent tools for dealing with this.

Meanwhile you approve plans for the colonization of New Capricorn. The current planning is as follows.
    1. Phase I (1 year)
      1. Detailed survey of New Capricorn IV
        1. For optimal colonization site
      2. Construction of White Tower defense station in New Capricorn IV orbit
        1. Including ASF forces and at least 20 PPG-01
    2. Phase II (2 years)
      1. Construction of initial colony site and transport of initial colonists
        1. Initial population at end of phase will be ~100,000
      2. Deployment of Colonial Division and Planetary Defense Wing as initial defenses

You also receive a memo from Jeremy. He is requesting approval to begin direct operations against Nova Roma, deploying 2nd Armored and 2nd Infantry to secure control over the planet and take out the leadership of the rebellion. The provisional government of the NRI has already approved the operation and three loyalist legions will be accompanying the initial landing.

As you still have complete dominance over the orbitals the initial phase of the invasion, at least, should be smooth as butter. The rebels also appear to be short of ASF assets on the ground to contest the landings themselves. Jeremy is being cautious, however, and is treating the landing as a heavily contested situation against a fully intact air and ground defense network, using absolute worst case assumptions that he is having to land against the sort of defenses that he would set up using your technology.

As such he is requesting that both Independence class carriers be sent to boost his ASF numbers. He has also included a note that he would like the Navy to begin studying a dedicated fire support/command dropship design focused on the heaviest possible Long Tom battery to provide additional artillery support during landings.

The plan appears to be a low risk, conservative attack plan, with a major focus on force preservation and avoiding collateral damage to NRI civilians. There is an addendum that if enough transport is available he would like the 2nd RRF to be deployed to support the attack, however this is labeled as optional to give him a fast strike force to exploit opportunities.
[]Approve Operation Breastplate with 2nd RRF redeployment
[]Approve Operation Breastplate without 2nd RRF redeployment
    []Deny Operation Breastplate

Closer to home, a large forest fire is raging through the newly planted jungles on Griffon IV, but according to DoME this was expected behavior and in line with their long term plans for the ecosystem. Many of the trees that they planted actually require fires in order to enter fertility cycles and release seeds, so the fires are actually needed for the ecological health of the entire system. The flames themselves are pretty much confined to the jungle floor, the biggest trees are pretty much shrugging it all off while the brush is being burned away, leaving behind even richer soil.

You are a bit dubious, but these are the experts, and sure enough a few weeks after the fires finally die out many of the trees explode in a riot of color as glorious flowers bloom in vegetative ecstasy. The jungles have gone from being a melange of greens, browns, and blacks to a canvas of brilliant pinks, whites, blues, reds, and oranges.

Team Griffon continues to dominate in the men’s and women’s decathlon, although Nowa Warszawa does come in a close silver in both contests. The TTP’s women’s decathlon team is ravaged by injuries, sadly, with only a single athlete managing to complete the competition and even she was limping by the end of the final event.

The shooting competitions are extremely hard fought, with Team Griffon managing silver in each. The TTP and Nowa Warszawa split gold medals, but in all cases the scores were so close that every single event required a shoot off. The sporting press for marksmanship sports is incredibly impressed by the skill on display and it looks like you will have a very strong shooting team for the Olympics in two years.

Team Nowa Warszawa takes a dominant gold medal in men’s wrestling, for their third gold medal of the games. There are some impressive moments, especially considering that the heavyweight competitor from Nowa Warszawa is of Drac heritage and the welterweight of Polish heritage, and the two show absolutely no animosity and, indeed, appear to be very close friends indeed.

In women’s wrestling the contests are once more extremely close, all competitors showing a very high degree of skill. Team Griffon manages a gold, but the extremely high level of competition again speaks well of the overall Imperial teams prospects in 2 years.

Team Griffon and Team Nowa Warszawa split the gold in men’s and women’s fencing, however the competition is marred by an incident during one of the women’s sabre qualifying matches when an overhead camera fell during the match, striking one of the competitors on the shoulder and sending her to the hospital with minor injuries. The anchor bolt for the support wire of the camera had worked itself loose over the course of the competition and had finally failed at just the wrong time. It is discovered that the wood the bolt had been secured in had been damaged by termites, but the sheetrock and drywall had prevented the damage from being spotted. More termite damage was discovered in the beautiful wooden competition center, but analysis showed it was safe to continue. After the competition repairs will be carried out to guarantee the structural integrity of the history building.

Turn 62 - But You Can Come Along With Me

It doesn’t take long for the courts to rule on the case, and the new delegates and senators are seated. There is, however, a great deal of lingering animosity from Parliament, making it much more difficult for you to work with them for the near future. Ah, well, elections are in two years, hopefully you’ll be able to handle the problem children then.

In the Pan Griffon Games, the TTP and Nowa Warszawa teams split the honors in Archery, although the overall quality of competition is low enough that experts are not expecting much improvement for the team in two years at the Olympics.

The Men’s Military Pentathlon is crippled by the fact that nearly all of the ordinary competitors are assigned to 2nd Armored and 2nd Infantry, and so are not available for the competition. Recruits from the Aerie make up the three teams and what they lack in precision and experience they make up for with vim and vigor. And an absurd willingness to do things that more sober and experienced participants would avoid. You resolve to check but are pretty certain that all of Team Griffon originates from Pollux, because some of their antics are of the ‘witness me’ quality you’ve come to expect from Pollux Man. Trying to improve their scores on the pistol ranges by dual wielding for that ‘two gun mojo’? Really? Cadets these days, Sergeant Major Ngo had firmly sat on you when you went through your two gun mojo phase, which never happened and there are absolutely no pictures and zero evidence of it so kids these days, right?

At least the women’s team from Griffon in the pentathlon had multiple veterans from 1st Armored who were able to participate, leading to them completely dominating the competition despite the youthful high spirits of the other two teams.

In the soccer matches for the Games the competition is extremely tight on both the men’s and the women’s side, with some excellent play. Granted, you have to take the commentators' word for it because you are still not quite sure about this ‘offsides’ thing and tend to get easily distracted as players kick a ball around for no apparent reason that makes sense to you. The sudden shouts and screams that cause you to pay attention again usually just make you even more confused because even with the video board showing replays you tend to still have no clue what just happened and why it was worthy of shouting and screaming, since the score was still 0-0 after, you checked your watch, an hour of play.

You admit it, you don’t get soccer, and probably never will.

The TTP players put on a dominating show in baseball. Unlike soccer, which seems to you to be ‘fast paced with nothing happening’, baseball is slow-paced, but things happen that are comprehensible. Plus it seems the fans in the stadium are having a great deal more fun with things unrelated to the play on the field, what with the ‘hot dog races’ and such. You actually find yourself roped into wearing a ridiculous outfit and joining in, which was quite fun.

You were a hot dog, running around the warning track racing other hot dogs, and it was actually funny. Your grandkids loved it as well.

The softball tournament was a skill tour de force for Team Griffon, with the team so utterly dominating the competition that they pitched multiple no-hitters, and two of their pitchers pitched perfect games, including in the final game of the tournament.

And now it is budget time.

    Joy.

General Stewart kicks things off. “Your Majesty, we are committed to building at least one White Tower this year in New Capricorn, and we recommend building one as well in GX-C9 to physically stake our claim on the system. Other than that, we strongly recommend continuing to expand our production base. This took a back seat last year, but we really do need to expand our strategic, mech, and ASF production capacity. We will have 2 Oasis II stations at least coming online in several years, and each one requires 4 wings of ASFs. Each White Tower requires a single wing, and each Silver Tower station we might build requires 3.”

She takes a look at her notes, dispensing with any slides or presentation. “For Ground Forces, we recommend procuring 3 Armored Cavalry Regiments and a single Light Horse Regiment, for 3rd Armored and 3rd Infantry respectively. We also recommend procuring 3 Mechanized Regiments for 3rd Infantry. The savings from reduced procurement we strongly recommend go into expanding our industrial capacity for new Mech production.”

“We have also been working on a new unit structure, procurement of which in an efficient manner will be highly dependent on expansion of our light Mech production capacity.” She continues. “We are calling this an Armored Cavalry Division, which would be organized as follows.” She finally brings up a graphic on the display.
    1. 1st Brigade
      1. 1 Pathfinder Regiment
      2. 1 Special Forces Regiment
      3. 1 Mechanized Regiment
    2. 2nd Brigade

    5. 5th Brigade
      1. 1 Mechanized Regiment
      2. 1 Armored Regiment
      3. 1 CAS Regiment

“We have also worked out a final unit organization chart for the Imperial Guard.”
    1. 1st Brigade
      1. 3 Armored Cavalry Regiments
    2. 2nd Brigade
      1. 2 Imperial Guard Regiments
      2. 1 Assault Regiment
    3. 3rd Brigade

    5. 5th Brigade
      1. 1 Armored Cavalry Regiment
      2. 1 Assault Regiment
      3. 1 CAS Regiment

“As you can see, we are removing the Winged Hussar ultralights from front line service; they will be reassigned to the Palace Protection Detail. We are also formally retiring the Lion and Tiger assault tanks from service, although this is more a formality as there are no such vehicles currently in service. Further, the 8 Garrison Armored Regiments in service are being transitioned to standard Armored Regiments, retiring several older combat vehicles as well thus further rationalizing and streamlining procurement. Finally the old Light and Heavy Garrison forces are being transitioned to a new Garrison Division set up. The TO&E for a Garrison Division will be as follows.”
    1. 1st Brigade
      1. 2 Garrison Regiment
      2. 1 Mech Hunter Regiment
    2. 2nd Brigade
      1. 2 Garrison Regiment
      2. 1 Mech Hunter Regiment
    3. 3rd Brigade
      1. 3 Garrison Regiment
    4. 4th Brigade
      1. 3 Garrison Regiment
    5. 5th brigade
      1. 3 CAS Regiment
“Our existing Light Garrison Forces will be converted into a single Garrison Division, to be stationed on Griffin’s Roost. Each Heavy Garrison Force will be converted into a full Garrison Division, with 1 stationed on Nowy Gdansk, 1 on Nowa Warszawa, and 1 on Griffon IV.”

QM Note - All in game statistics for vehicles and formations are available at this website, in the near future (it is my next project) I will be completely rewriting the TRO Deep Periphery Quest as well

The most Pro of all Powerpoint Pro’s, General Powerpoint Pro herself, then steps up to the podium with… a Powerpoint. And it is Pro. Very Pro. With animated transitions and everything. Clearly the work of a dedicated Powerpoint Pro. Which General Reyes certainly is.

If she weren’t so good at running the Aerospace Force you’d be tempted to strangle her with her own remote control.

“Your Majesty, we will be unable to meet all production targets this year. Ferro-Aluminium production is simply not sufficient to construct all of the ASFs that we will require to build 9 wings of ASFs. At this time we have enough of that strategic resource to build only 5 wings of ASFs, assuming zero dropship construction this year. As such, and again operating on the assumption of zero dropship production, we can produce the following.”
    • 3 Attack Carrier Wings (⅜ of requirements)
    • 2 Fighter Wings (100% of requirements) assuming we purchase 2 White Tower stations this year.

“The situation becomes even more dire once the Oasis IIs come online. Your Majesty, we simply need to vastly increase our Ferro Aluminium production capacity, and we need to do so immediately.”

She yields the floor to Thanh. “Your Majesty, we in the Navy concur with our Aerospace colleagues, we desperately need to increase Ferro Aluminium production. As such we are proposing a temporary freeze on Dropship production this year, beyond those commissioning this year. The funds thus freed up could then be directed towards building up our Ferro Aluminium production capacity significantly. We could also order the scrapping of all of our more obsolete 1st generation Dropship designs. If we were to scrap rather than preserve all examples of the Tyrannosaurus, Warrior, Lightning, Megaraptor, and Devastation classes the museums would be upset, but we would have sufficient Ferro Aluminium available to build 5 more Attack Carrier Wings, thus filling all of our flight decks. If we were to also scrap all of the Troodons, including the ones currently earmarked for museums, we would be able to produce a single Majestic this year.”

Thanh takes a deep breath. “To be honest, I very strongly recommend against this course of action as being excessively short-sighted. Keeping those old vessels in reserve, with some sent to museums, would give us the ability to reactivate them in case of emergency as well as providing serviceable space frames to the System Guard for conversion into SAR, Tug, and patrol vessels which will save us a great deal of money in the long term. And speaking in a less utilitarian way, it would be the case of destroying portions of our history rather than preserving them for future generations.”
    []Scrap them all
    []Scrap all but the Troodon’s
    []Thanh is right, preserve them

Bridget is fidgeting a bit in her seat as Thanh sits down, then pops up and bounces over to the podium. “Your Majesty we’re ready to begin the pre-colonization survey on New Capricorn IV at your word and also to build anything that you need including all of those Ferro Aluminium forges that the flygirls say we need really badly and I agree because we can build them for them and then we would be able to build more ASFs and dropships and stuff and my staff has also come up with methods of directly investing in the economies of our less prosperous colonies and affiliates which should help us boost them up to the level of the Griffon system much more quickly than would otherwise be the case which is a really good idea we think and I hope you agree with that but we can do all of that and build stuff at your world since remember we have an idle DoME team and idle DoME teams are scary things because you really don’t want to see the ideas they get when they’ve got nothing occupying them so maybe an Asteroid Redirect mission to help boost Nowa Warszawa would be a good idea, or maybe Calliope IV but we think and AR mission is the best use of their time”

One… long… endless… sentence… and she never once stopped to breathe.

Isoroku is off working with the Olympic committee, and his aides report nothing new from his end.

Jake is looking grumpy, the massive blow up in Parliament has truly offended the big Pole, and he looks rather irritated that he’s having to deal with them. “Your Majesty, I’m still working on the Senate, we have the education projects in progress, and I’m all set to start trying to thump some sense into the Chamber to get them to focus on doing their job rather than playing politics.”

Mary is looking old. Serene, but old. “Your Majesty, I have two things. I plan on retiring next year, and will have candidates for my replacement on your desk by next month, and while we have no new projects for you we have several recommendations for how to utilize our research teams efficiently.”
    • Military R&D (1 team available)
      • Thumper Cannon
        • Relatively inexpensive and a potentially interesting technology
    • Non-Military R&D (3 teams available)
      • All 3 Basic Compact Core R&D projects
        • Would allow us to design and build Warships at least

    She sits back down.

Harry is also unavailable, still on Nowa Warszawa working with his teams there to handle the surge in violence on the planet in conjunction with law enforcement.

Janet likewise is on Nowa Warszawa and isn’t available, her aide is there and informs you that there aren’t any new projects from the Justice Department.

The Pan-Griffon Games complete with what are arguably your favorite events, the motorsports. Your kids loved racing hovercraft when they were little, your twins had gone into all forms of motorsports professionally, and you’d always been a supportive mom.

Plus two of your grandkids are themselves racing in the Stock Car race, that alone would guarantee that you absolutely enjoy the racing.

The hovercraft races are hard fought, almost surprisingly so. The drivers from Team TTP show a definite aptitude, pacing Team Griffon rather well. In the end it comes down to a triple overtime victory for Team TTP by less than a foot.

Team Griffon returns to dominant form in the motorcycle racing, sweeping the podium and leaving Team Nowa Warszawa and Team TTP to contend for silver and gold in the overall event on points, which Team Nowa Warszawa barely manages to win on the grounds of one fewer pit stop for the team.

You manage to scream yourself hoarse as your granddaughter Emily barely beats your grandson Claude for the gold medal in stock car racing. The event, held on a superspeedway, was fast, with the almost inevitable Big One that thankfully both of your grandkids managed to avoid. You are, of course, going to have to Have Words with Emily for her move right before the finish line spinning Claude out to pass him for the win. If she had taken the high line out of Turn 3 she’d not have had to do something that risky! Words will be said! Although the accompanying hugs might dilute their impact. Claude is certainly not pouting all that much, considering that he’d done the exact same maneuver on this track just a few months ago for the series championship against Emily. And you’d had Words with him then as well, come to think of it.

The Formula race is incredible, with a young driver from the TTP blitzing through the pack from an initial starting position of 8th and taking the podium in dominating fashion. The fact that the kid got promptly signed to the twin’s racing team right afterwards is just the cherry on the sundae.

The Men’s Marathon is the most brutal example of the race you’d ever seen, despite the pleasant weather. The pace was absolutely insane, with the lead runner from the TTP seemingly having an endless store of energy stored somewhere in his skinny bones. None of Team Nowa Warszawa even made it to the finish line, and the 2nd place Team Griffon runner collapsed right after crossing the line, while the winner looked like he could run another marathon after a drink of water and a bathroom break.

The Women’s Marathon is run in nearly identical conditions, but thankfully the pace was far less brutal. Team Nowa Warszawa wins gold, with Team Griffon in a close second.

The attack has begun on Nova Roma. Jeremy had engaged in a month-long series of fake landings and feints, drawing out reaction forces and pounding them from orbit. Throughout he’d made a special point of hammering the defenses in one area that would be ideal for the sort of patient and methodical tactics that he’d been using against the rebels from the start.

And then he landed his entire force right on top of the capital, with 2nd Armored actually conducting a combat drop right on the Palace itself. The fighting was over in less than an hour, with the self proclaimed God King captured and in custody before he could manage to do much more than grab a pistol.

The 2nd RRF is currently merrily running high speed patrols through the surrounding areas, sweeping up scattered rebel forces. 2nd Infantry division is securing the city itself as loyalist legions land and deploy, and 2nd Armored is holding the capital core.

Fighting continues as rebel legions refuse to surrender, but without effective leadership they are less than effective. Initial reports indicate that they expect to wrap up main combat operations in less than a year. The loyalists are moving in additional auxiliary legions in, making use of your infantry transports, to assist in securing the planet.

The NRI has also caused Jeremy a bit of a headache which he’s kicked up to you. Once combat operations are resolved and the rebellion firmly crushed they intend to hold a formal Triumph… for him. He’d have to dress up in a ridiculous toga, wear a laurel crown, have his face painted red for some godawful reason… and parade through the city riding a 4 horse chariot, with all of the captured rebels and their families proceeding him, the entirety of 2nd Armored and 2nd Infantry marching behind him… and encouraged to sing ribald songs at his expense.

The real complication, beyond personal embarrassment, of this entire thing is that at the end of the parade the entire rebel leadership is scheduled to be publicly executed, along with their spouses and children. Evidently the Romans do not buy into the whole ‘sins of the father’ ideal of later jurisprudence, but in the event of High Treason they practice the obliteration of entire families for the crimes of the head.

You’d almost certainly be able to convince the NRI not to execute the families, but in that case the families would be exiled… and in the best case would be exiled to you or one of your allies. The NRR has already indicated that they have no interest in harboring the families of convicted traitors.

A group of investors and engineers from Calliope IV have approached your office with a proposal to build a dedicated LAM facility on the planet. Unlike regular ASF or Mech factories the LAM facility would only be able to build and upgrade LAMs, and the engineers have developed a design for production that fully embraces the unique capabilities of the platform. By the time the factories are built they’ll have fully tested and validated the design.

Alternatively they would build out a standard Mech factory setup, although that would cost slightly more, to enable production of any light or medium mech as well as specialized tooling enabling LAM production.

The new White Tower stations have been built and emplaced in GX-C9 and New Capricorn, effectively claiming the two systems for the Griffon Empire. Full airwings have been stationed on each, giving you a strong defensive position. As the White Tower includes extensive manufacturing capacity it is now possible to build Silver Tower and Oasis II stations in each system.

The plans to upgrade all Ferro-Aluminium Foundries gets a serious boost when it is found that the manufacturer of some of the critical hardware required for the systems had had a major commercial customer cancel their own order of the same equipment, allowing all current foundries to be upgraded this year giving a massive boost to production.

Both new Caravel jumpships have completed their trials and are now in service, clearing their construction bays for next year.

The Mech Factories on Griffon IV and Nowa Warszawa have been fully upgraded to sustain useful production rates. You are now able to build six entire regiments worth of light to medium mechs per year.

Unit production has gone very well. All required wings have been deployed, although the Aerie is in the planning stages of opening up satellite campuses on Nowa Warszawa and Calliope IV. 3rd Infantry Division is now at full strength, and 3rd Armored has grown in force as well. The first Imperial Guard Regiment has stood up on Griffin’s Roost, drawing from the most elite armor and infantry personnel in the army.

A campaign to steer development funds to the TTP has resulted in a welcome boost in economic activity on the two planets of the protectorate. Combined with the economic investment in the TTP and Nowa Warszawa you have seen a nice boost in GDP, employment, and overall well being in the former Drac portion of the Empire.

Ground has broken on a pair of new ASF factories, one on Nowy Gdansk and the other on Nowa Warszawa. It will be at least 2 years before they are both at full production levels. The factory on Nowy Gdansk has seen a surge of investment from local firms eager to cash in on future contracts, allowing for somewhat faster construction.

The new Endosteel plant has been built in Calliope IV orbit.

Sukiashi in the TTP has joined the HPG network, giving a further boost to overall productivity that may yet be small, yet has noticeable effects on commerce.

Shipyards and the refit facility have been expanded, increasing the number of dropship slips available.

The completion of an underwater arcology on Griffon IV is cause for celebration. Tourists are flocking to the unique destination, while underwater mining has begun in earnest causing a lovely boost in the planet’s economy.

Relations with Parliament are still extremely poor, although most of the politicians are willing to admit that they brought this upon themselves. The Senate, cowed somewhat by the Eldest tapping his claws on the pavement, has been just slightly mollified, while many in the Chamber of Delegates are still insisting that they did nothing wrong and are snubbing your political team's efforts to calm them down.

A large number of new schools at all levels, along with comprehensive planetary educational data networks have been built on Calliope IV and in the TTP, allowing for the local populace to take full advantage of the advances in pedagogy and educational sciences that the Empire has to offer.

More efficient methods of refining raw germanium ore have been developed, tested, and distributed. Your germanium refineries are now somewhat more efficient, increasing the number of jump cores that can be built.

The new Thumper Cannon has been tested. Essentially a short ranged direct fire only version of the Thumper howitzer, this weapon system has several potential advantages for armored vehicles, especially if dealing with unarmored infantry.

There’s a bit of a scandal over in the Exploration branch, and it all comes down to two things. A single typo in a data form that wasn’t caught, and the fact that the initial survey team hadn’t looked closely enough at some of the swampland on New Capricorn IV.

For the first, the official data form lists the equivalent gravity of New Capricorn IV at 1.3 times that of Earth, however the actual data shows a gravity of 1.03 times that of Earth. Trying to nail down how exactly this happened is a bit of a rabbit’s hole of competing statements, but in the end it was probably just a fat fingered typo.

    You’ve never done that. Ever.

The other thing is that in the various swamps near the projected initial colony site Terran animals have, in fact, been found to be thriving. Specifically several bird species, most notably the shoebill. Said discovery happens when several veteran members of the survey team entered the swamp and promptly hit the muck as the sound of gunfire exploded around them. Only to discover that they’d startled a number of shoebills.

There were many red faces that day.

Regardless, Capricorn IV looks like it will be an incredibly viable colonization site.

You are enjoying a rather lovely early winter day when the latest crisis hits your desk.

An issue has been detected in the endosteel forgings used for mech production. Nothing at all critical, although it is somewhat annoying. A slight flaw in the stress analytics during initial development has been discovered and confirmed. The actual impact is minimal, structures that should have had life spans of centuries would, without correction, fail within decades. The problem isn’t in the material itself, but rather that in order to protect against certain edge cases in sheer load you needed to actually round off the structural members by a few tenths of a millimeter to prevent stress concentrations. The amount of material needed to be removed is about a tenth of a kilogram from an assault mech at most.

The fix can be easily done in the field by any qualified technician, although it will probably irritate every single one of them in the process as they have to run ultra high grit sandpaper over endosteel ‘bones’. Fixing the actual extruders is also easy, but far more time consuming as this requires disassembling parts of the entire assembly just to get to the extruders in question. As a consequence, this year you won’t be able to build any new units that require endosteel while the work takes place. It’s annoying, but from reading the reports on the issue nothing more than that.

You do order immediate reviews of the analytics for Ferro Fibrous, Ferro Aluminium and Ferro Carbide, but all of those check out properly. The issue with the Endo was an unexpected stress accumulation that didn’t show up in any of the test samples, because they were only tested for a few years at most, whereas it took over twenty years for the issue to start to show up. None of the mathematical models would have caught it.

The Aerie has completed work on their newest training mech, which could well be a beneficiary of this situation. A 30 ton quad mech with an identical movement profile to the Wolf Spider, the Trainer is designed to instruct cadets in combined arms operations as well as quad mech piloting. Older Mk II Light Battle Armor suits will be brought out of storage, refurbished, and issued as training suits for cadets on the infantry track. Ironically, the new Light Training Regiment has more potential combat power than the older Training Regiment, despite the older unit using individually more capable Cadet mechs. The difference? Combined arms with the battle armor suits.

A good lesson for aspiring Mechwarriors, in your opinion.

The alacrity with which the NRI accepted your offer to take the Pugnus Deorum leaders’ families as exiles is a mite suspicious, leading Jeremy to conclude that they’d intended to simply exile them in the first place but had raised the entire macabre mass execution as a gambit to prompt you to take them without billing the NRI for it.

    Clever, but you’ll remember this.

They also accept one of the defense station designs submitted by a consortium of industry, and the value of those contracts is such that you have seen a very welcome boost in income this year. You’d been thinking of giving them a possible rebate, but the shenanigans concerning the exiles pretty much kiboshed that bit of generosity.

The primary in the Nowa Warszawa system has entered a phase of heightened solar activity, heralded by a number of large flares and coronal mass ejections. Nothing all that hazardous, but it does require some rerouting of space traffic and early replacement of some communication and weather satellites in orbit.

The local government on Calliope IV has passed legislation to begin construction of a commercial space station in orbit. If successful, they intend to build one in Calliope III orbit to serve as a hub for research and tourism.

Some of the early research teams on Calliope III have returned to Griffin’s Roost, bringing with them several interesting discoveries and, well… pets.

The pseudo-raptors of the planet are clearly not ‘true’ dinosaurs, for one thing they have distinct genitalia similar to most mammals rather than a cloaca, although they are feathered. More importantly, they are about as smart as a herding dog and appear to easily accept humans as ‘pack’.

The raptors have a commiserate relationship with the Rex-analogues, and appear to have readily extended that same relationship to humans. The raptors help guard the nest from scavengers and other small predators, and the Rex/human protects the pack from larger predators that might threaten the raptors as well as allows the raptors to assist in hunting.

Doesn’t hurt that they are very colorful, very playful, and seem more than smart enough to be considered ‘tame’, as they apparently are not going to spoil the ‘deal’. Your youngest grandkids, of course, are already begging you to get them raptors of their own.

And then there are the cute and roly poly Lystrosaurus analogues which are about the size of a dog and look utterly adorable. They’re incredibly friendly to everything, yet were almost the cause of a civil war among the research teams.

You see, their tails are broad and heavily muscled with a thick fat layer, but no bones. And apparently are incredibly delicious when grilled like steaks once the skin is removed. You can, in fact, verify that this is so, as they are tender and juicy like the very finest cuts of prime beef. On the other hand, the animals themselves are incredibly cute, enough so that killing them for their tails seems almost sacrilegious.

Fortunately, the raptors showed the solution to the problem and a path for both the ‘delicious!’ and ‘cute!’ crowds to co-exist peacefully. Like several species of lizards, the tails detach if tugged hard enough, then regrow over time. The detachment seems to cause absolutely no distress to the creature, who doesn’t seem to even notice. Studies have shown that there are no nerves in the tail, it is pretty much purely a mass of muscle, a bit of fat, and the blood vessels that feed the tail appear to be designed to close themselves off when the tail is removed.

So, in other words, you can have your yummy Lystro tail steak and pet the Lystro without feeling guilty. Win win!

And, of course, your grandkids also want their own Lystros as pets too.

A number of Lystros have been imported to Calliope IV already and the locals have organized ranches to breed them for their tails. It looks like it may be a useful little industry for the planet.

Nowa Warszawa remains in an unsettled calm, there have been no new major attacks by either side as the deployment of additional security forces has had an effect, The new detachments of the Imperial Grifftiger Mounted Police have started patrols in some of the more raucous regions, which has had a further chilling effect on the radicals.

On Griffon IV there have been some minor earthquakes along a previously thought dormant fault system. The quakes are well away from settled areas and are only being picked up by seismometers. The largest has been a 4.9 and from the geology of the area it appears that might be the highest intensity likely. Geologists are pleased to see tectonic activity, as it indicates that the planet may be able to sustain the terraformed state long term.

A crime ring has been broken up in the Inner Asteroid Belt. Mostly involving financial crimes and tax evasion, the arrests have caused some disruptions in the Belt’s economy, but long term effects are expected to be positive. This year will see a small reduction in expected GDP output, however.

Nowy Gdansk has seen a boom in population this year as many Poles from Nowa Warszawa have travelled there seeking work, in addition to the knock on effects from a baby boom about 18 years ago. Over the next several years the working population of the planet is expected to explode in numbers due to the extremely high birth rates since 2975.

The first commercial jumpship yards have begun construction, building non-military knock offs of the Caravel that have been stripped down to be more cost-effective for commercial concerns. You will start seeing a boost in commerce in a few years as these commercial jumpships start to come online, meanwhile you are seeing a slight boost in the economy overall as the yards begin construction. A number of aerospace companies are currently racing to build additional commercial yards as well.

A group of investors on Calliope IV have approached the Crown with a proposal to build vehicle factories on the planet, initially for spare parts and such for resident armored and garrison units. Currently spares for the garrison's vehicles need to be shipped in from the Griffon system, and some companies on Griffin’s Roost might be unhappy if local competition took away a cash cow from them, as they’ve been previously able to charge premium prices.

Likewise a different investment group headed by Lee Aerospace is seeking permission to build a complex of ASF factories on Calliope IV. As expected, certain manufacturers based on Griffin’s Roost who had been making strong profits off of supplying Calliope IV are crying foul to the industrial expansion of the world making them less dependent on them. The vector they are using, however, is to fund a campaign alleging widespread environmental degradation on the planet as the result of the ‘excess’ industrialization. They are being rather clever about it, using stock images that are of polluted and degraded areas of the planet that long predate your arrival on the planet and relying on the fact that most people won’t know the difference.

As a result, there is now some pressure to reverse the industrial expansion policies, on the grounds that it is destroying a ‘pristine’ world. The industry groups are also managing to conflate Calliope III with Calliope IV at times, then when pressed on it apologizing for the confusion between ‘two previously unspoiled worlds’.

The Calliope representatives are being somewhat overwhelmed by the tactics being employed, as they are far less accustomed to mass media manipulation. This sort of thing is a common tactic in industrial and commercial infighting, the goalpost shifting, the conflating of unrelated items, the fast talk, and most sophisticated consumers are well able to tell so long as the response from the targets is competent.

The Calliope folks are laboring under the illusions of ignorance, however, and are not responding as well as they should. You could intervene, either directly or indirectly, although the former would risk further angering the industrial groups behind the campaign. Directly you’d simply point-blank counter the propaganda point by point, indirectly you’d provide expert assistance to the Calliope folks in how to handle the media storm effectively. Or you could just let Calliope sink or swim on their own, on the grounds that they really need to learn how to handle this on their own.

Long range sensors in the Sukaishi system pick up an emergence pulse at a pirate point far away from any inhabited region in the outer fringes of the system. A very fuzzy picture is taken by the telescope array which has been fed to SARAH for enhancement.

The results are, to say the least, worrying. A small flotilla of vessels, tentatively identified as a Cameron class battlecruiser, two Dart class light cruisers, and a Pinto class corvette are apparently recharging in the system. Markings are similar to the Amaris Remnant vessels spotted in the past. None of the vessels make any offensive moves and after ten days of recharging they jump out.

SARAH does point out that the images don’t precisely match the warbook, then makes a rather worrying statement that she only has the ‘public’ warbook for Warships, not the SLDF internal specifications, and that it has long been theorized that the ‘public’ specifications for SLDF Warships were… deceptive at best. Plus she has no data on any refits or modifications made by the Amaris Remnant. Gathering more intelligence is a high priority.

Parliament is being extremely quiet this year, after the drubbing that they took last year, and is sticking to routine business while keeping their heads generally down. It’s nice and quiet, if not at all helpful to the Empire. For all the times Parliament causes you headaches and problems, they do regularly produce useful legislation that has been helpful.

No doubt eventually they’ll regain their more typical boisterous nature. They do annoy you, but you aren’t sure what to do without them.

Siriwan and Lisa have finally openly admitted their relationship, winning Willis the final jackpot of the betting pool. If they’d only waited until after Easter, then you’d have won. As it is, you are rather happy for your granddaughter, and you’d come to rather like the Japanese woman that more or less runs the TTP for you.

That’s not the only bright spot among the grandkids, John Van, your eldest grandson, has finally settled down. He’d been dating his girlfriend for over fifteen years, but their military duties had always kept them from actually marrying. But with John now assigned full time to the Ministry in Procurement, he’s finally settled enough, and the two are married in a grand ceremony in Griffsport, in the same cathedral where you and Willis were married all those years ago.

And there’s already a great-grandbaby on the way!

That’s not the only wedding this year, it seems many of your grandkids are finding 2993 to be a great year to wed. Eight of them, to be precise. The ceremonies range from the extremely private, usually on board SS United States to more public ones. But soon you’ll be seeing more great-grandbabies! Ba likes, Ba likes a lot!

Survey work in the ruins at New Capricorn turns up an intact data recorder. The colony hadn’t failed on its own, but had rather been ravaged by pirate attacks battering down its defenses until they failed, the last raid had resulted in over 90% of the colonists on the planet being enslaved or killed, including every single female colonist. The few survivors had eventually died out, either to subsequent raids or old age. By the description, these are the same sorts of pirates who’ve been harassing your shipping and attacking the NRI for centuries, not the Amaris Remnant.

Speaking of the harassment of your shipping, the new White Tower on New Capricorn has already been blooded, beating off a pirate raid. Unfortunately another convoy in Griff’s Leap was also hit and took some casualties, one Bainbridge was damaged enough to require the services of the repair facility back in Griffin’s Roost, while one Caravel has been crippled and is currently unable to jump. Repairs are believed to be possible, thankfully, and the crippled jumpship is being protected by a brace of Majestics.

The picket force you’d left on Nova Roma are also attacked by a massive force of pirates. Twenty primitive jumpships jumped in, releasing over 70 dropships, most of which were of the ‘Stinger’ classification, IE small fast assault dropships of varying configurations that were light, swift, decently armed, but with no armor to speak of, but also 7 of the ‘Hive’ classification vessels, which disgorged enormous wings of the crude ‘Swarmer’ type ASFs. In a twist, however, it appears that the pirates had some old DCMS equipment, as there were a number of Sabre and Shilone ASFs as well.

The picket force was composed of 14 of your combat dropships, 4 each of the Majestic and Shannon class and 6 Bainbridges. Despite being massively outnumbered, your forces were able to effectively maneuver to control the battle and while every ship was damaged none were lost, in exchange for wiping out the pirate force. The pirate jumpships acted as pseudo-Warships during the battle, armed with crude approximations of capital missiles, and were themselves destroyed as well.

You took three dozen KIA and over a hundred WIA, however.

And one of the KIA was your grandson, Sarah’s second oldest son Jeremy Alexander Bartalozzi. He was the gunnery officer on board HMS Caesar, a Majestic class vessel, and was killed when a lucky shot managed to penetrate to the bridge, killing the entire command crew of the ship. It was a true golden BB, a one in a trillion shot, as the bridge on the Majestic class is buried deep within the vessel. A previous hit had weakened the armor on the hull, then a second hit managed to hit milliseconds later, burning through and penetrating to the bridge with just enough energy to completely destroy it. The Auxiliary Control Center was able to take over fighting the ship instantly, precisely as designed, and HMS Caesar’s very next volley annihilated the dropship that had managed to score the golden BB.

The funeral will be a closed casket, as there wasn’t enough left of any of the dead to bury. Your daughter and your son-in-law are handling it as well as can be expected, and you are very glad for Willis’ support. You’d not yet lost any of your kids or grandkids, but with so many of them in military service you’d always known it was a risk. You’d just hoped that the Grim Reaper would continue passing them all by, even if you knew intellectually that it wouldn’t.

You make it a point to attend all of the funerals, both for those lost in the naval action and also all those lost in the fighting in NRI space. Casualties were relatively light, thankfully, but there were still over two hundred dead. Lavish use of artillery and air support combined with absolute Mech supremacy combined to break the Pugnus Deorum forces before the infantry engaged, and while the rebel forces had battle armor of their own their forces were already harrowed and disorganized in comparison to the disciplined sledgehammer that was 2nd Armored and 2nd Infantry.

The NRI loyalist legions are taking over garrison duties, and construction has begun on six NRI defense stations at the jump points. They are obviously heavily prioritizing them, and they will be completed by next year. 2nd Infantry, 2nd Armored, and 2nd RRF have all been redeployed back to the Griffon system to refit and rest.

An incipient riot on Nowa Warszawa was effectively neutered when a lone Imperial Grifftiger Mounted Police officer showed up, riding the biggest Grifftiger in the force. Said ‘tiger simply padded through the crowd, moving slowly and deliberately, with her tail swishing side to side just above the crowd's heads, and growling deep in her throat, her entire posture one of a hunting cat about to pounce on a tasty morsel. The target of her ire? The radicals who were trying to instigate the crowd to storm a Japanese neighborhood. Said radicals promptly soiled themselves, probably wishing they wore their brown pants, and fled in terror, whereupon the tiger simply curled up and graciously allowed herself to be mollified with copious petting.

First the terror, then the cute… seems legit.

In the middle of the day several weeks later, however, the alarms start to blare loudly. A significant jump signature is spotted at the Zenith of the Griffon system, well clear of your jump point defenses. A pair of Dart light cruisers jumps in, the same two that had been spotted in Sukaishi several months ago.

They make no hostile moves, beyond both deploying their jump sails, and even as a challenge heads out from your jump point defenses a signal comes in from the vessels.

They would like to talk, rather than fight, although they are completely willing to fight if you force them to. According to a woman who identifies herself as ‘Commodore Rein’, the Crimson Storm has no quarrel with you, even if you are a remnant of the Star League, and she doubts that you have any legitimate quarrel with the Crimson Storm, and she would very much like to keep it that way… in both directions. She seems quite confident in her group’s ability to match you in battle, but seems disinclined to instigate a conflict just because.

According to SARAH one of the two Darts is a perfect match for TAS Plumbata, a museum ship that, according to her records, vanished from the New Earth system in the early days of the Amaris Coup. Each of the two Darts is carrying six Mammoth dropships, dropships that they were not carrying when spotted in Sukaishi. The other Dart is unidentified, but the armament does not match the Warbook that she possesses.

The Mammoths seem to be relatively new construction, and from the scans appear to be a personnel carrying variant rather than a standard cargo vessel.

Careful analysis of the scans shows that the weapons on both warships are on standby, and again, they have made zero hostile moves. They are simply waiting for your response to their request to talk. If you accept, one of the two warships will move into the inner system to Griffin’s Roost and Commodore Rein will come down to the planet; she has sworn that they will take no hostile actions.
    []Accept, talk is good
[]Go out to the jump point yourself on HMS Renown and talk there
[]Refuse to meet with them, but do not engage in hostilities
[]Attack them anyways, death to anything Amaris related

The ancient Dart takes about a week to transit in towards Griffin’s Roost after you give clearance to approach under diplomatic conditions. She makes no hostile moves the entire way, and even refrains from active scanning which is rather courteous of them.

Rather than spend the time fretting, you get other work done.

Jeremy has already written up his own analysis of the campaign in the NRI. The force structure that he’d proposed in the past had worked well enough in exercises, but in the field he reports that there were significant issues. Large portions of the force structure were idle for much of the campaign, yet still consumed logistical resources. In addition, at times the 5 brigade ‘pentagon’ structure of the divisions proved excessively unwieldy to command. 1st Brigade spent 90% of the campaign completely idle, as the Pathfinder regiment was not well configured for conventional warfare, the Special Operations regiment had little to do thanks to the fragility of their equipment in a conventional battle, and the Mechanized regiment served exclusively as a bodyguard unit for the command staff.

He has already worked out a more flexible alternative organization chart, switching back to an exclusively triangular force structure. The highest organizational level goes from the Division to the Corps, with three brigade Divisions and three divisions to a Corps. Specialist forces, like Special Operations and Pathfinder units, would be reorganized as divisions in their own right, and would be attached to the Corps as required for the mission while retaining independent command staff. Likewise, CAS assets would become a Corps level asset, independent of the maneuver divisions.

The Corps, apart from its organic assets such as CAS and HQ troops, would be flexible in makeup, with divisions assigned as needed. If more than one Corps is required for an operation, they would be organized as Armies of 3 Corps each.

The final organization is as follows.
    1. Armored Division
      1. First Brigade
        1. Standard Mech Regiment
        2. Standard Mech Regiment

      3. Third Brigade
        1. Imperial Guard Regiment
        2. Imperial Guard Regiment
        3. Assault Regiment

Based on the new organization, you’d have 2 Armored Divisions, 1 Assault Division, 4 Infantry Divisions, 1 Cavalry Division, 1 HQ Brigade, and 1 CAS Brigade fully manned. You’d have one brigade of SpecOps troops and 1 brigade of Pathfinders. The Imperial Guard Division would have one of its Imperial Guard Regiments and one Assault Regiment. You’d have 2 Armored Regiments as the nucleus for a pair of Infantry Brigades, along with 1 Light Horse Regiment as the nucleus for a Cavalry Brigade.

He is also proposing the establishment of a dedicated Corps Artillery Brigade, composed of a mix of Abbot and Chaparral artillery tanks. The Abbot’s would be the Corps Commander’s personal shotgun, allowing the application of the massed firepower of almost 250 Long Tom tubes against any target in range, with over a hundred Arrow IV platforms equipped with a mix of standard and SAM variant Arrow IV missiles covering the long range artillery platforms.

There is some growsing in high command about the reorganization plans, but in general the Army is proceeding to shuffle units along those lines. In the future, once you have additional Corps’ stood up and ready, you will have far more flexibility in operational use.

This at least keeps you occupied while waiting for the negotiations to begin. Commodore Rein has proven to be a quite polite interlocutor in the meantime, albeit one who is staying utterly and totally vague as to what she wants to talk about beyond it involving peaceful relations. She looks young enough to be your granddaughter, but you get the sense that she is far more than she appears.

The Dart smoothly enters orbit and a single small shuttle is launched. It is much smaller than you’d expected, the size of some of a Gyrfalcon. And the visuals of it are intriguing. There are no transparencies, no canopy at all. No sign of any airlock either.

And when it lands it becomes even more intriguing, once the shuttle finishes taxiing to the parking stand a segment of the underside starts to lower, then rotates a coffin-like assembly vertical, which then splits open revealing Commodore Rein. Alone, and the cables retracting from attachment points back into the ‘coffin’ are… interesting. You realize very quickly that Commodore Rein is a full cyborg, for all that she looks like an ordinary human. The security sensors are showing a near total lack of any exposed biological material, her ‘skin’ is an advanced composite that mimics ‘real’ skin nearly perfectly… too perfectly, in fact.

After the preliminaries are done you learn several things. The Amaris Remnant evidently is massively into cybernetics, to a degree well beyond your own achievements in the area. They’ve been so for an incredibly long time, and, much like you had your Mad Science Moment in your own history with the KF experiments gone horribly wrong, they did as well, centuries ago they suffered a collective Homer Simpson-esque Mad Science obsession that resulted in nearly their entire population at the time going full cyborg… and only then thinking ‘wait, how do we have kids if we’re only brains in fully cybernetic bodies?’. With this realization coming just a few years too late, as any sperm and ova samples that may have been preserved in cryogenic storage had aged past their use-by dates.

    Oops.

According to Commodore Rein, most of the factions in the Amaris Remnant were heavily constrained by their lack of numbers, although this was more of an economic than military constraint when a half dozen cyborgs could plug into a suitably modified McKenna class battleship and operate it at a higher efficiency than a flesh-and-blood crew. The problem is that there is a very hard limit on how much they can expand, and one of the factions, which was now the dominant one, had managed to break the paradigm.

By contracting with Kilburrough for more population. According to Commodore Reign, the Black Steel faction had purchased a large shipment of non-sterilized slaves from Kilburrough just over two hundred years ago, then used them as the basis to produce a non-cybernetic ‘under class’ to operate their mines, factories, and such. The most promising children of this population are selected by the Black Steel as full members and are provided with the full cyborg package. As such, the Black Steel are now a threat to all of the other factions.

The faction that she represents, the Crimson Storm, had gotten control over a cache of mothballed museum ships that had been part of what she describes as ‘Freedom Flights’ from the Amaris Empire and Rim Worlds Republic, and had decided to partially replicate what the Black Steel had done.

They’d gotten in contact with Kilburrough to do some business. Unlike the Black Steel, however, the Crimson Storm had no interest in creating their own slave population, Commodore Rein is rather adamant on that point. Her faction is descended from some of the earliest groups that formed the Amaris Remnant and their ancestors had formed a major part of the Naval component of the Rim Republican Army.

What they had done is contracted with Kilburrough for genetically engineered infants, free of harmful recessives. The total package that they’d contracted for specified peak human physical characteristics. Their plan is to raise the children as their own, forming proper families with them, and recreating ordinary population growth through them. They’ve researched far less invasive and complete cybernetic enhancements that would avoid all of the mistakes that they made, in that human reproduction would still be possible, and any of the children, upon reaching adulthood, who themselves choose to undergo the procedures will receive the new generation of implants and upgrades.

As for why they did business with Kilburrough for this instead of, say, approaching you? Simple, until the flotilla that Commodore Rein is in command of reached Kilburrough and hacked into the Kilburroughan data networks, they’d not known you were even here. If any other faction of the Amaris Remnant had known of you, that information had never been placed on their public nets, nor conveyed to the Crimson Storm.

Oh, and the contract with Kilburrough? Looks like Kilburrough is now in possession of an original flight Cameron class Battlecruiser and an original flight Pinto Corvette. Commodore Rein rather wryly pointed out that they weren’t about to give them any good WarShips. That had been payment for 120,000 genetically engineered infants, and the Commodore, even after learning of you, had not been willing to leave any of them behind to the non-existent mercies of Kilburrough and lacked the ability to simply smash the slavers herself. Instead, she decided to make a deal with you, in the hopes that you will be able to make use of what they’re willing to trade to you to eventually be able to slay the Kilburrough dragon yourself.

As for what they are wanting here? They have a proposal for you. An indefinite duration non-aggression pact between the Griffon Empire and the Crimson Storm plus their allies. They would give you recognition codes that any unit under their control will recognize and respect, and ask that you do likewise. Additionally, they are willing to trade you TAS Plumbata, as is, plus two of the Mammoths she is carrying with a total of 20,000 of the infants, in exchange for one of your shiny new Caravels. They will also include complete production specifications for the final Terran Hegemony iteration of the Dart class. They will request that you commit to not scrapping TAS Plumbata, instead preserving the ancient ship as a museum. And as a final incentive, they will include data on ship-mobile HPG systems, which should reduce the difficulty of researching them for yourself.
    []Accept the deal
    • Indefinite non-aggression pact with the Crimson Storm
    • Receive TAS Plumbata
      • Completely original Dart-class light cruiser
      • Very primitive equipment compared to modern equipment

    Turn 63 - Hosanna Deus
During the discussion finalizing the transfer of TAS Plumbata, you rather diplomatically, in your considered opinion, ask just why they call themselves the Amaris Remnant, since from your understanding of history, the Rim Republican Army had been opposed to House Amaris.

Commodore Rein sighs at that. “Just under twol hundred years ago we encountered a group centered around a McKenna who identified themselves as Clan Wolverine, we got as far as saying the word ‘Rim’ in our previous affiliation when they opened fire on us. Six of us suffered fatal death at that point. Since then, most of us refer to ourselves as the Amaris Remnant in a simple sieve for crazies like that. The crazies open fire immediately, the non-crazies don’t.”

She shrugged at that. “Our population was never large, even before the civil war between the RRA and AE refugees that led to the big oopsie.”

You suffer a bit of an epiphany. “Ummm, how many of you are there in the Crimson Storm? Individuals I mean…”

“We’re one of the larger factions, about 150 of us, why?” she replies, and you resist the urge to facepalm.

“And you are planning on raising 100,000 children?” you boggled, you actually boggled.

“We’re really rather good at multitasking.” Commodore Rein says quite seriously, looking rather confused at your reaction. “We designed a specialized remote unit for child care, based on our records, and each of us is easily capable of handling a hundred of those remote units simultaneously. It’s not quite the ideal ratio, but going much over a hundred would prevent us from operating our ships efficiently.”

You decide that this may be a good time to sit the commodore down and have a rather serious discussion, from the perspective of a ba, about the intricacies of child rearing, and how their plan is a quintessentially ‘bad plan’. These people seem to be extremely intelligent, have a rather sound if quirky ethical basis, yet are completely lacking in anything even vaguely resembling common sense.

Kids need parents, not caretaking remotes. They need human contact at an individual level, not faceless robots.

Then you discover that while the Crimson Storm has a terrifying lack of common sense, they do have very good planning capabilities. Evidently the plan is to keep the babies in the stasis pods and release them in a staggered yearly release over ten years, plus you discover that the chassis you’ve been interacting with (and isn’t that a trip) is based on the same design that they are using for the caretaker units, the only difference being the lack of a brainbox interface on the caretaker remotes.

In the end you and Commodore Rein wind up having a several day discussion about their plans, and you wind up rather impressed. They seem to truly wish to do what is best for the children, and have made some modifications based on your input. With their level of technology, along with their limitations, they do appear to have worked out a viable solution, but they do promise that if anything unforeseen comes up that they’ll send a courier here for help.

So it might not be a ‘good’ plan, but it’s the best of an unpalatable salad of options for them. They either find a way to expand their numbers enough to successfully resist the Black Steel or they wind up getting swamped by pure numbers. They can only expand their numbers of actual people artificially, they cannot naturally procreate, and while they can use cloning other factions have tried that with very… unfortunate results. Evidently there’s now a faction among them who built the most powerful combat station anybody had ever seen and are calling themselves the Masters of IKEA, because one of them found an IKEA catalogue and got obsessed with building the universe's most heavily armed furniture store.

Evidently instability is a thing at this level of cybernetics, and cloning only makes it worse. The Crimson Storm has gotten a handle on the cybernetic instability, but they are afraid of using cloning as a result.

Or they could unshackle their helper AI’s and have them run additional ships, but AI’s still go psychotic briefly after a KF transition, which makes this a rather dicy solution. Plus there’s a faction which went that route anyways and they are one of the ones who call themselves pirates, evidently after finding an ancient movie from old Terra called ‘Pirates of Penzance’ and modeling themselves after it.

Commodore Rein assures you that this group is essentially harmless, since they spend so much time making dramatic speeches and posing and singing endless patter songs that by the time they are actually ready to attack you’d have had plenty of time to recharge your drives and simply jumped away, and that the one time their ‘victim’ didn’t these pirates had absolutely no clue what to do next.

They did solve the AI psychosis problem, but all of the rest of the Remnant are too disturbed by their antics to want to know how, lest they wind up having to sing all the time.

Or they could completely copy the Black Steel and use outright slaves, which they refuse to do on moral and ethical grounds.

You spend another few days taking Commodore Rein around various child care facilities, giving her tips on taking care of infants, teaching her suitable recipes for young children, and generally giving her the same sort of Motherhood 101 lessons you’ve given your own kids.

After that TAS Plumbata is moved to a parking orbit, out of the way of any traffic. Two of the Mammoths are formally handed over to you, the other four, with all of the Crimson Storm’s remotes on board… as you realize that the only ‘brainboxes’ in this entire squadron were Commodore Rein’s and her second-in-command aboard the other Dart. Two ‘people’ to run two warships and multiple dropships, and according to the Commodore only the other Dart was ‘fully optimized’.

Quirky they may be… but very dangerous. You are rather glad to be parting on very good terms with at least one faction of the Remnant.

With that, crews are sent aboard the two Mammoths to bring them down planetside, the cryostasis pods are offloaded, and they are significantly more advanced than you’d expected. Something else to send to the research teams.

The babies are given a full check up once brought out of stasis and are precisely as advertised, genetically there are no harmful recessive or dominant alleles present in their genomes, they have peak human genetic potential, and there are zero signs of any traps hidden in the DNA, RNA, or other genetic or biological materials. The babies are exceptionally healthy.

You’d already decided to care for them as any other children in the adoptive system, but with even more vigorous screening and oversight over the process than normal due to the overall situation. Several of your newlywed grandchildren offer to take some of them in, while Sergeant Major Ngo’s family takes in a good number as well across her numerous grandkids, nieces, and nephews. Willis’s nephews and nieces also are well represented in the volunteer adoptive parents and, all things considered, there is no issue in finding good homes for all of the children.

You receive the list of candidates to replace Dr McEvedy as your Research Minister. She’s rather happy to finally retire, and get to spend more time with her grandkids and great-grandkids. You are somewhat envious of her, to be honest.

Dr Rebecca Franklin is a biologist and medical researcher who has been involved with all of your advances in the biological sciences. She’s the oldest of the candidates, as well as the most experienced, however she has little experience outside the biomedical field.

Dr Adam Woods is an engineer heavily involved in weapons development, he led the team that developed the Improved PPC and reverse engineered the Heavy Naval PPC. He is a former naval officer, having served aboard HMS Defiant as a plankowner when she was first commissioned.

Dr Elizabeth Hunt is a materials science researcher who has worked on numerous fundamental science projects over the years as well as the development of Ferro-Carbide Armor. She is the youngest of the candidates but has an impressive record of accomplishments.

Dr Aaron Patel is a hyper-physicist who was closely involved in the work developing the HPG transmitter and is currently the research lead for the Basic Compact Core project group. He has a reputation as a somewhat absent-minded genius, but has proven to be quite capable of picking competent subordinates to handle the routine matters that he tends to forget about while focusing on his research.

Dr Anna Bryant has worked in administration for years serving as Dr McEvedy’s chief assistant and troubleshooter. Many R&D team leads dread seeing her name pop up in a meeting request, as she has historically been sent to deal with troubled projects and get them back on track. For all the dread, however, none of the leads have ever said anything negative about her and she is very highly respected.

Dr James Cox has a reputation as a maverick and dreamer. He’s the most closely tied into the educational side of the position of any of the candidates, having recently returned from Calliope IV where he was overseeing the setup of a modern educational system that was up to Griffin’s Roost standards.

Turn 63 - Legionus ab Comae

You are minding your own business in your office when your daughter Sarah bursts in without so much as knocking. Still dressed in mourning clothes, she is looking incredibly determined.

What follows is an hour of being yelled at by your historian daughter, without being able to get a word in edgewise. She is insisting that absolutely no surveys or studies of TAS Plumbata take place without her and her department being in charge, lest any historical details be lost to ‘the fumbling and flailing about of mere scientists’.

Considering that you’d already written out orders to that effect, they are sitting in plain sight on your desk, and you’d been about to call her to see if she wanted to handle it personally or delegate it to her deputy chair over at the History Department of Griffin’s Roost University, you find this rather amusing. You’d seen this level of passion from all of your kids at various times, usually over some pet issue or concern, but Sarah had always been far more controlled about it all.

You wait until she’s run out of steam, then simply pick up the already signed orders, hand them over, and ask your now quite embarrassed daughter if there’s anything else.

Trolling your kids is so much fun.

There’s a fairly strong earthquake in the vicinity of the capital of Nowy Gdansk. Minimal damage is suffered, thankfully. The faultline in question was known about, and measures had been taken to ensure buildings would be able to survive up to a magnitude 9 earthquake, and this was only a 7.5. The largest aftershock is a 5.2 about a day later. The avalanches triggered by the seismic activity are rather more exciting, as they occur in an area loaded with ski resorts which at this time of year are very crowded. Thankfully again the safety planning paid off with the resorts taking the warnings of the seismologists very seriously. There were less than a dozen serious injuries among the skiers as the slopes were closed, with only a few rebels sneaking out to their ultimate detriment.

And then it’s your favorite event of the year, the budget meetings.

General Stewart leads things off. “Your Majesty, I doubt that there will ever come a briefing where we don’t ask for more production capacity, and this one is no different. Strategic materials, mech production, and ASF production are all priorities. We understand that there is a free DoME team available, and we would like to strongly urge that a new megafactory complex devoted to mechs be built on Nowy Gdansk.”

Jeremy next takes the podium. “Your Majesty, the majority of our production requests this year will be to fill out the new TO&E. Going forward we will be requesting production to field full brigades. We will also be setting up the garrison for New Capricorn as well as slightly expanding the Aerie training force. Aside from filling out 2 Cavalry Brigades and 3 Infantry Brigades along with our first Imperial Guard brigade, we will be procuring 2 new Armored Brigades. We will also be filling out 2 Corps integrated units by purchasing 6 regiments of Corps artillery”

He brings up a chart of procurement requests.

    • 4 Armored Cavalry Regiment
    • 1 Light Horse Regiment
    • 1 Light Training Regiment
    • 4 Standard Mech Regiment
    • 1 Armored Regiment
    • 8 Mechanized Regiment
    • 6 Corps Artillery Regiment
    • 1 Imperial Guard Regiment
    • 10 Garrison Regiments
    • 6 CAS Regiments
    • 2 Mech Hunter Regiments

He then looks at his notes. “One reason that we are hoping to boost our mech production capacity is that we are currently testing a new Brigade organization over at the Aerie, based on SLDF records. We’ve long relied on combined arms, the setup we are testing at the moment takes that up a notch, and if the exercises work out, will be our setup going forward. In order to take maximum advantage of it, however, we need to be able to produce more heavy mechs, and if we want to combine it with line breaking assault units, we’ll need even more production.”

General Dora “Powerpoint” Reyes is up next, with a powerpoint. “Your Majesty, the only new procurement request from the aerospace forces is for a planetary defense wing to be deployed to New Capricorn once the colony is established there. If there is sufficient ferro-aluminium available after dropship construction we would like to also request a pair of Interceptor Wings to be based on Nowa Warszawa and Calliope IV.”

Thanh is up next, and she doesn’t bother with a powerpoint at all. Instead she rolls out the old flipchart that Admiral Benjamin had loved.
    1. Regular Dropships - 54 total slips available
    2. Large Dropships - 40 total slips available
    3. Production Proposal
      1. Make use of half of available slipways to re-establish a yearly cadence of dropship construction.
        1. 27 Regular Dropships
        2. 20 Large Dropships
    4. Regular Dropships (27)
      1. 27 Bainbridge-class Parasite Destroyers
    5. Large Dropships (20)
      1. 5 Majestic-class Parasite Battleships
      2. 5 Independence-class Parasite Carriers
      3. 5 Newport-class Landing Ship - Regiment (Mech)
      4. 5 Tarawa-class Landing Ship - Regiment (Vehicle)
    6. Jumpship (2)
      1. 2 Caravel-class Jumpships

“The Bainbridges will be deployed as system defense pickets in conjunction with White Towers, the Majestics will be deployed to Griff’s Leap to strengthen the defenses there, and we strongly recommend constructing a White Tower in that system to further lock down our control of the lines of communication to the NRI against the pirates. And finally the Independence-class vessels are intended to operate in conjunction with our future Warships as their primary parasites.” she explains, pacing a little behind the lectern. “The Newport and Tarawa class vessels, respectively, are our primary offensive transports. We will be procuring more Newport-C logistics vessels next year, and thereafter alternate standard and logistics variants. I have my staff working on a Request for Proposals for a combined arms transport to replace the Tarawa, but that is at least a year away.”

General Stewart reclaims the podium. “Your Majesty, I must stress once more the importance of continuously boosting our production capabilities across the board.”

At that, the ever-chipper Bridget can’t restrain herself, and starts talking even before General Stewart manages to sit down. “Your Majesty! We got a DoME team all ready to get started on building that megafactory, just give us the word! And we can build mech and ASF factories too, and more strategic materials, and new yards, and everything else you might want us to build! We also have reorganized and restructured somewhat to account for growth, which will allow us to do things like subsidize transportation costs for workers moving between our various systems and planets thus allowing us to spread out our growth more, making us less vulnerable to black swan events.”

Isoroku is a sea of calm besides the hyper Bridget. “Your Majesty, the Diplomatic Service has also been reorganizing for the future. To that end, we have several new options for you to fund if you so desire. We are now in a position to promote external trade, as well as attempt to attract new immigration from polities that we have friendly relations with.”

The big greying bear of a Pole sitting next to the skinny little asian Foreign Minister laughs. “Well, Your Majesty, your political teams apparently aren’t the trend setters on reorgs like we thought we were. But yes, we reorganized a bit as well. In addition to the usual schmoozing with those schmucks in Parliament, we can also engage in direct political outreach to the citizens, promoting things like health, education, and encouraging more hiring.”

You’d met Dr Bryant a few times, when Mary had been ill or unable to make a meeting. She looks rather more uncomfortable than usual, but then again this is her first time in the Big Chair for her Ministry, rather than second fiddle.

“Your Majesty, we have a number of new projects available, and two free research teams. From the Crimson Storm we have a small project to improve our cryostasis capacity, along with projects to study TAS Plumbata and fully parse and analyze the plans for the Dart-class Light Cruiser with an eye towards bringing it into production as our first Warship class.”

She checks her notes. “Your Majesty, we recommend the two projects related to the Dart, studying TAS Plumbata will give us very useful insights into Compact K-F Cores, alongside the enormous historical benefits that I am certain you’ve been made more than aware of. Analyzing and parsing the plans for the vessel will actually kill multiple birds with but a single stone, as a preliminary reading of them shows production data suitable for a new, heavy capital missile, the NL/55, and the class 30 Naval Autocannon.”

Harry is up next, looking rather more cheerful than usual despite a heavy cast on one arm. He catches you looking at that, and grins. “A reminder to be careful when helping with home renovations, Your Majesty. Got just a bit overconfident when tearing down a chimney and had to be rescued from under a load of bricks.” he says. “Regardless, professionally I have one project for your consideration, implementing full COINTEL screening of every HPG message transmitted in the Empire.”

Janet rolls her eyes from where she is sitting next to Harry. “I’ve got a few projects here, but for this year I recommend initiating a new round of reviews and rationalizations of regulations and laws passed in the last ten years so we can maintain a nice compact legal code.”

There’s a thought nibbling at the back of your mind as you go over the production figures in your office. Ten regiments worth of Mechs on order… nine of which… sonofa… you put in a call to Jeremy to get to the bottom of things.

Turns out that the Defense ministry had gotten creative, making use of the massive stockpiles of spare parts at the DURF to feed new production this year, while the endo-steel forges, once the extruders are corrected, will then restock the DURF. The light casualties and damage from the NRI campaign has resulted in a sufficient stockpile to pull this off without drawing down the inventory excessively.

Well, that’s a relief, and you realize that in the excitement of the Crimson Storm arrival you’d missed the memos detailing this. You had quite a bit on your plate then, after all.

Regardless, this does mean that the latest expansion efforts of the AFGE are very successful, with two new Armored Brigades and the filling out of two Cavalry Brigades.

The new ASF wings are also in service, filling out the defenses of the TTP as well as the new colony on New Capricorn.

Speaking of New Capricorn, the colonization effort was fraught with unexpected challenges, not the least of which was a navigation mishap which saw the Monolith carrying the colonists jumping to Calliope by mistake due to a mix-up in shipping orders. Ironically this meant that by the time the initial colonists arrived on New Capricorn the lawyers and law enforcement personnel had already been on the planet for a few days, leading to some good-natured grumbling.

Further administrative snafus bedeviled the project to upgrade ferro-fibrous production. The initial bidding process was mishandled due to a clerical error resulting in the request for bids never being made publicly viewable by potential bidders thanks to an incorrectly set flag on the bid request. Due to this the project wasn’t even begun until late December and won’t finish until next year.

On the plus side the construction of new factories went perfectly, with the vast majority coming in on budget and on time. The new DHS forge orbiting Griffin’s Roost’s moon was a small, but welcome, exception, as the contractors were able to over deliver without costing you any additional funding.

The pollution abatement efforts on Nowa Warszawa have been hugely successful, with the scrubbing towers and filter plants achieving all set metrics for reducing airborne and waterborne pollution to safe levels. Aggressive cleanup of industrial zones has further reduced the once critical pollution levels, making the planet a far more pleasant place to live and work.

Due to the expansion of the economy and the overall situation on the planet, Nowa Warszawa is now considered a core world, rather than a peripheral world.

The new cryopods have slightly reduced the cost of transport within the Empire, slightly reducing overall upkeep expenses.

The study of TAS Plumbata as she is prepared for reopening as a museum ship in Griffin’s Roost orbit yields a thoroughly unexpected surprise, the full maintenance and operating manuals for every single variation of the Dart-class, making it far easier to, in the future, bring the modernized version of the class into production.

The shipyards and refit facility have continued to expand, with your first Warship slip now available, once you have a viable design to build in it. In conjunction with the new dedicated Caravel yard in Nowy Warszawa you are now able to build 3 additional jumpships at a time, one of which must be a Caravel.

The Griffin’s Roost and Griffon IV yards will expand to provide additional Warship slips, while the Nowy Gdansk yard will continue to expand jumpship production.

The counterintelligence shop within your Intelligence Ministry has approved protocols for monitoring HPG transmissions for potential COINTEL material in a manner consistent with Griffon Empire legal codes and procedures. Purely internal communications, IE those transmissions that are between two points under Griffon Empire control, will only be surveilled by court order, while those to external destinations, once HPG stations are built outside of Imperial space, will be routinely scanned for the detection of potential espionage activity.

Relations with the Imperial Parliament have slightly improved thanks to the efforts of your Political Ministry. They’re still not particularly happy with you, however.

The survey of Griff’s Leap has been completed. There are no habitable planets in the system, even with extensive terraforming. The asteroid belts, however, are exceptionally rich in transuranics and industrial metals, making it potentially profitably for mining.

The new HPG station is operational on Nowy Gdansk.

Griff’s Leap is now protected by a White Tower at the Zenith, securing the trade route to the NRI. The new defenses are tested nearly immediately by a pirate raid and handily pass the test, driving off the pirates with nearly contemptuous ease.

Turn 64 - You Can Stake The Claim

The year so far has been quite… quiet. Unexpectedly so, no crisis erupting anywhere, no disasters, even the Department of Periphery Studies was behaving itself.

Didn’t mean the paperwork ever stopped, and with the Olympics starting soon there are plenty of things to deal with. Supplemental authorizations for facilities on Griffon IV for the Games, to start with.

Oh wait, this counts as a crisis, by a certain stretch of the term. Hurrah!

Construction on the new venues is running slightly behind, enough so that the organizers are not confident that they’ll have everything 100% tested and ready in time for the Games themselves. This is mostly due to the mad scramble in transferring the Games from the NRI here, but also because Griffon IV is having to build everything from scratch.

An infusion of capital and manpower could help bring Griffon IV over the hump and ensure a successful Games, but it would be expensive and potentially delay other projects you could have teams working on.

You have several options in front of you. First of all, you could just let it be, the Games would be delayed by a few weeks, you’d lose some prestige, the organizers would have massive egg on their face, but it would cost you little but some bad press on Griffon IV, which could well be counterbalanced by positive press for prudent financial management.

You could do the minimum to get the organizing committee over the hump, allocate funds and a currently idle DoME team to rapidly complete all the facilities just in time for the games. Would cost you a chunk of change and the services of the team for the year, but everything would proceed as normal.

Or you could go big, dedicate more funding as well as all three idle DoME teams to the project, and turn the facilities from utilitarian and functional to masterpieces. Make the Games this year an absolute spectacle, with the most beautiful and functional venues ever. Long term, this would make Griffon IV a magnet for sporting events, boosting the local economy immensely.

And just when you thought this would be the only crisis point this year, another one erupts. This time two small biotech firms, one on Griffin’s Roost and the other on Nowa Warszawa, are embroiled in a bitter patent dispute over a new low-environmental impact fungicide intended to help protect crops from certain harmful fungal infestations. Both companies claim that they patented the new chemical first, records show that they somehow both managed, as far as anybody including SARAH can calculate, to file the patent applications at the exact same time down to the second. Both companies are now crying foul. The local governments aren’t able to resolve the dispute without Imperial attention.

What makes this case extra infuriating is that the Nowa Warszawan firm was founded by the twin brother of the man who runs the Griffin’s Roost firm. You check, and yes the Griffin’s Roost firm is indeed based in Pollux. Which, in some ways, makes this the resurrection of Pollux Man.

Lovely, you’d thought you’d left dealing with Pollux Man behind when you became Empress, allowing the planetary authorities to deal with the insanities of Pollux.

There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever of any wrongdoing by either firm. The brother who left for Nowa Warszawa did so a year before development had even been mooted for the fungicide by either company, and there is absolutely no sign of any communication between them since. Special Branch has already investigated and found no trace whatsoever of any industrial espionage by either firm. They’ve also verified that the legal teams for both companies had no contacts, there was no shenanigans between them, no malfeasance on the part of the Patent office, no signs of any collusion, coordination, or corruption.

Both companies are sole proprietorships with the brothers in control, and the twins refuse to even speak to each other directly, let alone share the patent. You took the time to check with their parents, and the parents are both utterly exhausted dealing with sons who have been bitter enemies since early childhood, were always fighting each other, and had to be forced to pretend to be civil to each other even at the dinner table. The boys refused to share birthday parties, and no amount of parental intervention had ever shifted the needle of utter hostility between the two. The rest of their kids, and they have three more, are fine, and just as exasperated with their siblings. None of them have any consistent contact with either brother.

The fungicide itself would be incredibly useful on both Nowa Warszawa and Griffin’s Roost, as both planets have similar fungal problems in regards to certain feed crops for livestock. After every rain ranchers and farmers need to spray their fields with fungicides to beat back the similar fungal infestations, which if left unchecked would cause fatal respiratory illnesses in any mammal which ingested the spores. The new fungicide would cost less than half as much as the current standard, meets or exceeds every single safety and environmental requirement for that class of chemicals, and even acts as a mild fertilizer as it breaks down in the soil where, incidentally, it provides lingering protection against the fungi even between applications.

To add the cherry to the top of this crap sundae, the two brothers have also proven to be excellent at PR and have the local media on both Nowa Warszawa and Griffin’s Roost framing the dispute in terms favorable to their own claims, with the entire dispute turning into an ‘us versus them’ situation. So far it’s only in the specialist press, not the general media as a whole, but…

Thanh also has a decision for you to make. Jeremy had requested a transport capable of carrying an entire regiment of Mechs, tanks, and two regiments worth of infantry in the same dropship. The idea being that three of these, plus a single logistics vessel, would make an ideal transport for an entire Division of forces reinforcing an existing landed force.

In the end, two designs have made it through the selection process and are awaiting approval. The first, from Pyramid Aerospace is, oddly enough, not a pyramid. It’s a faceted design, all straight angles, no curves visible anywhere. Even the weapon mounts are faceted. According to the documentation, backed up by AFGE analysts, this simplifies construction while permitting a slightly stronger spaceframe. The design has an identical armor profile to the competing design from Majeure Electrique, but is less heavily armed while carrying more cargo, reducing the stress on logistics slightly. In a pinch it would be possible to occupy the 4th drop collar on the Caravel with a combat dropper rather than a logistics transport.

The Majeure Electrique design was the second of two submitted. The first was much smaller and cheaper, but apparently somebody at the company realized that they’d managed to submit a smaller and cheaper design, decided that they could have that, and the Mk II which is on your desk is more expensive and just as large. It has the most firepower of any of the designs, including 12 Long Toms for artillery support when grounded.

Finally, Lee Aerospace has proposed a Command Transport, meeting all of the requirements for the regular transports but adding in space for the entire divisional command staff plus reserved volume and tonnage for a future upgrade to a mobile dual HPG system.

    Turn 64 - Winner’s Take That Praise

Through heroic efforts the combined work of DoME and local construction contractors manage to not only fully complete the Olympics facilities on time, but they are truly spectacular. Griffin’s Roost has marginally better facilities, overall, but that is mostly a factor of age and variety rather than individual quality. You are rather impressed, not only did they manage to fully complete everything, but they even took into full consideration all of the ‘soft’ factors for facilities of this nature.

For one thing, there are sufficient bathrooms, and they are laid out efficiently enough that the likelihood of lines for either the men’s or women’s bathrooms is exceptionally low.

The opening ceremonies occur on time and are a true spectacle. The entertainment portion is focused around the ‘Pioneer Spirit’, emphasizing the planet's status as a freshly terraformed and transformed place, and DoME is given pride of place within the celebration.

However it appears that ‘home field advantage’ is notably missing, at least in the initial events. In Athletics the NRR and NRI teams split the gold, although Team Griffon manages silver in each. The women’s event is especially close, with the NRI out-pointing Team Griffon in the final events to take the medal.

In gymnastics there is a thrilling Men’s contest, with Team Griffon winning gold by a fraction of a point. Scoring is carefully reviewed, even though the NRI team didn’t contest it, and holds up under scrutiny. In the Women’s event the women’s gymnastics phenom that Team Griffon had been relied on suffers an early injury and is taken out of the competition. As a result Team Griffon gets their first bronze of the games. Shocking everybody, the NRR women dominate the event, even over the NRI team. In the team event, however, the NRI is utterly dominant, crushing the competition in a convincing fashion.

The NRI competitors then go on a tear, dominating the Decathlon to such an extent that Team Griffon and the NRR find themselves competing only for silver, a competition which Team Griffon manages to win. In swimming, the NRI is again dominant, beating a surging NRR team for the Gold, while Team Griffon barely finishes the race. The NRI finally seems mortal again after the women’s swimming event, with Team Griffon managing a solid first place finish for the Gold.

You make a rather Solomonic judgement in the case of the twin brothers and the fungicide patent, ordering that each company be granted equal patents with the right of independent licensure. As far as you are concerned, that solves the problem. Both brother’s can now compete on price and marketing, and move on.

You hadn’t counted on the sheer depths of hostility of the pair. It takes a few weeks for word to come back to you, but both brother’s have directed their companies to neither produce nor license the fungicide to anybody else, on the simple grounds that if they can’t have sole control over it, nobody gets it. Rather than admit that the other brother had developed the same thing as they did, each of them is perfectly willing to stand on pure spite, even at the cost of loss of profits and business.

Agricultural concerns are in a real tizzy and the dispute has spilled out into the general press. In general, your decision is praised as attempting to be fair and even-handed to both brothers, and the two are being roundly condemned for their conduct, but it seems that even public disapproval isn’t enough to penetrate the ferro-carbide armor of the brother’s egos.

On the other hand, the potential economic boon of the new fungicide is currently locked away behind the paywall of two arrogant geniuses' mutual hostility.

    Lovely.

There is a bill being advanced through the Parliament that is… interesting in its implications. The representatives from Nowa Warszawa and Calliope IV are the ones who proposed the legislation which would change the basis of representation in the Chamber of Delegates and Imperial Senate from a per-planet basis to a per-system basis. Representatives from Nowy Gdansk, Griffon IV, and both the Inner Asteroid Belt and Griffon II Orbitals are crying foul, insisting that their concerns need to be independently represented in the Imperial Parliament, however this is countered by the observation that they already have their own system parliament and government, so are in essence getting extra representation, plus inflating the Griffon systems representation in Parliament.

There are good arguments on both sides. On the one hand, the Griffon System is the core of the Empire, and as such should have extra influence, plus the needs of multiple settled planets and orbital regions are diverse enough that it would be fair to represent them in Parliament. On the other hand, this risks relegating the peripheral colonies to an increasingly irrelevant status in Parliament as populations continue to grow in the Core. It comes down to where the balance should be, between aggregation of interests and atomization of interests.

The debate is surprisingly civil, however. Unusually so, from your experience, but it seems that Parliament has decided to put on its Statesman Hat for a change. This is a strange and unusual occurrence, and you are wondering if you might need to declare a public holiday over it. Or perhaps investigate alien mind control rays as a possible cause.

You have sufficient influence to tilt the debate whichever way you desire, or you can simply let them hash it out on their own.

You get the news of a massive pirate attack on New Capricorn. The pirates themselves are wiped out, however in the process they manage to destroy a pair of Colchester class vessels and cripple a Majestic while also inflicting damage on the White Tower at the jump point. This was the largest and most aggressive attack yet and for the first time the pirates were making use of nuclear munitions. The lost dropships had been making a run for the pirate’s primitive jumpships when said vessels erupted with nuclear-tipped missiles, obliterating the two dropships despite their excellent point defense.
