Turn 56 - The Armies Fight

Combat Report - Operation Golden Devil

Phase One - Engagement at Orbital Shipyard Complex
Friendly Losses - HMS Grom, 14 Aerospace Fighters
Enemy Losses - 176 total combat dropships, 864 Aerospace Fighters
    Results - Destruction of Target

The engagement began with bearing-only launches of Barracuda capital missiles which had been equipped with nuclear warheads. These launches were deliberately timed to look like ‘panic’ launches from well beyond effective range, as the Dracs had never seen us use this weapon before. As a consequence, many of the Drac ASFs were still in their launch bays when the Barracuda’s reactivated, acquired targets, and slashed in to attack. Most Drac ASF losses occurred at this point, as less than a hundred enemy fighters managed to launch, massively outnumbered by the 10 wings we had deployed from the Royal Sovereigns.

Further capital fire caused enormous additional damage, nearly crippling the Drac forces even before they got in range to reply. A single enemy Avenger managed to kamikaze into HMS Grom, resulting in the destruction of the parasite destroyer with all hands.

The personnel of the shipyards were given an hour to evacuate prior to bombardment, unfortunately not a single shuttle or escape pod was launched in this period. Naval comm-scanners indicate that there were intense bursts of weapons fire inside the yards, evidently as security forces prevented the workers from fleeing. Six jumpship slips and associated dropship manufacturing facilities were confirmed completely destroyed.

Phase One - Engagement at Nowa Warszawa Orbitals
Friendly Losses - HMS Tufan, 67 Aerospace Fighters, slight damage to multiple vessels
Enemy Losses - 108 total combat dropships, 864 Aerospace Fighters
Results - Orbital victory and destruction of all orbital infrastructure

The enemy was better prepared for this engagement, but the initial barrage of Barracudas and sub-capital weapons still caused enormous damage, leaving the enemy at combat loss grouping before they had a chance to respond.

Unfortunately the enemy had very large numbers of aerospace fighters in the sky, and were able to shoot down a number of our own ASFs despite the enormous firepower disparity thanks to the fighting happening within the engagement envelopes for our dropships. HMS Tufan was lost to accumulated damage, her crew was successfully taken off and demolition charges utterly destroyed the wreck leaving nothing behind to salvage.

Phase One - Raid Nowa Warszawa (Ground engagement)
Friendly Losses - Loss of 14 vehicles, 28 dead, 192 injured
Enemy Losses - Damage to multiple enemy Mechs, ‘significant’ casualties amongst Friendly Persuader’ civil protection battalions.
Results - 1st RRF successfully withdrew to dropships, both SpecOps regiments are now active in support of Home Army.

Our first ‘combat drop’ on enemy soil went mostly smoothly, although several doctrinal changes are recommended (see appendix A). The 1st Rapid Response Force was able to dictate the battle, refusing to engage unless in a position to swarm isolated enemy formations and leading the enemy on a wild 600 kilometer chase around agricultural regions of the planet.

The Special Operations Regiments were able to completely break contact during this period, and at last report had joined forces with surviving Home Army groups that had been holding out against the Dracs' brutal rule. Over three hundred children were evacuated on board the Roadrunner when the Rapid Reaction Force was pulled off the planet.

Appendix A mostly consists of highly technical recommendations, mostly in regards to better methods of combat loading the dropships, distribution of ready supplies, and other things that are generally handled at much lower levels than the crown.

    -----

In short, Operation Golden Devil was a triumph. You suspect that the relatively weak ‘thunder run’ operation may have lulled the Dracs into a false sense of security, allowing the heavy punch to land successfully. Sensors detected fewer than a hundred remaining Drac dropships in-system when your forces jumped out following the battle, although estimates are that the remaining two orbital shipyards can build 160 dropships a year, not counting ground factory production. Getting trained and reliable personnel to crew that many vessels, of course, is a different story.

You also receive intelligence summaries from discussions that your SpecOps forces had with the Home Guard. Native Nowa Warszawans are a distinct minority on their own planet now, between purges by the Dracs and the importation of over a billion sterilized slaves from Kilburrogh. You boggle at that number, as evidently Kilburrogh has such an enormous population that they are able to export over 45 million slaves a year, packed like sardines into modified Mammoth dropships. The vast majority male, and all medically sterilized as evidently the ruling caste on Kilburrogh is unwilling to permit others to ‘breed’ their cash cow product lines.

You spend several very satisfying hours shooting effigies of the Dragon on the firing range upon hearing that.

It’s only several days after the force returns that you receive one further piece of bad news, your granddaughter was injured in the fighting when her Chasseur was destroyed by an enemy Jenner. She successfully ejected and was picked up safely, but suffered a broken collar bone, broken arm, concussion and lacerations.

Your first instinct is to go immediately to the hospital where she is recovering. Your second instinct is to go there in the guise of visiting all of the wounded. Which you wind up doing.

Of course, Tien is your granddaughter, and Jeremy’s daughter, AND a member of 1st RRF. The moment you entered the front door she somehow convinced the orderlies to sneak her out the back door so that she could join the rest of her unit on a ‘proper’ bar crawl, injuries be damned. She had zero interest in dealing with an overprotective ba.

You, of course, had anticipated this, had all of the bars in the local area being watched by the Special Branch, and as soon as you knew where the revelers were you crashed the party along with other members of your old squad from back when you were young and invincible. These kids wanted to party and thought their elders would just slow them down?

You’d show them young whippersnappers that old age and treachery, plus a cast iron bladder and liver, beats youthful enthusiasm every time.

You were INFANTRY, no vehicle crewmen alive would beat you at a bar crawl, damnit. You may be the Empress now, but you haven’t forgotten your roots.

Of course your bodyguards do not approve of this, but screw em, there is a principle at stake, and you’ve got Sergeant Major Ngo at your back.

    Kids these days.

You are quite glad that your guards have orders to take pictures of everything, because the expression on your granddaughter's face when you slide onto the barstool next to her and steal her whiskey is priceless. You think she was bracing for getting yelled at or mom’ed in public only to blink when all you do is throw back the shot in a single bracing gulp, slam the shot glass down on the bar, and order two more, one for you and one for her.

And in the end you and the old gang stand triumphant, with RRF troopers groaning in defeat as drunkenness claims the last of them, and you just know that all of them are going to wake up with killer hangovers in the morning. You, meanwhile, once you deal with a full bladder from wisely mixing water into your drinks and cheating like a cheating cheater who cheats, cheatingly, will sleep the sleep of the just and righteous after teaching these whippersnappers a thing or two.

You and the rest of your old unit spend the rest of the night reminiscing about old times, when things were simpler. You need to do this more often.

And you don’t even need to worry about the press or public image, because as far as you can tell the moment the news broke of the great victory the entire system decided to engage in mass revelry.

Yes, you took losses, and tomorrow you’d steel yourself and visit the families of the dead, but dammit, this was a win, and you are going to celebrate it.

Several days later you are back in the Palace, your granddaughter properly chastised and with a new perspective on her ba, and Admiral Benjamin is back in your office with another ops plan.

The navy is proposing a recon in force of the Kuroisora system. A straightforward recon run for your single Sentinel with a strong escort force. Only a single Monolith would be dedicated to this mission.

The Drac commander of the system identified herself as Gunji-no-Kanrei Siriwan Kurita. She seemed quite young for her rank, but in the recordings you have of her she was unfailingly polite, yet appeared completely at ease with her rank. The maneuvering of the defense forces was far more competent than anything you had seen out of the Drac aerospace forces since you had last faced then Tai-Sa Gustavson prior to his rebellion.

She also seems to lack the common arrogance that you were used to, her tone in advising your force commander of her intentions should he engage the jumpships was matter of fact and polite, with no threats or bluster, just a simple statement of intention and a desire that there would be ‘no need for conflict in this small matter’. She had even sent a message to you via your force CO that she would much prefer to meet with you over tea, but is quite willing to meet you with a sword if circumstances required, although she would regret the necessity.

Gunji-no-Kanrei… this is the Heir to the current Coordinator…

For some reason SARAH advises avoiding all forms of seafood if you ever happen to meet with her.

You do receive an urgent communique from the NRI. The rebellion on Tarentum is becoming even more severe, with the rebels currently holding almost half of the population centers on the planet. The rebels have multiple regiments worth of light Battlemechs, which have proven to be quite effective at handling the battle armored infantry and tanks of the NRI.

They are practically begging you for direct military aide on the ground.

Jeremy and the AFGE Ground Forces staff propose dispatching the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Armored Division and 4th Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division to Tarentum to engage the rebel forces. The old War God look is back on his face with this, since he is proposing to send his eldest son into the fire here. You can sympathize, you are sure you looked like that when you first dispatched Jeremy into battle a few years back.

And then it is budget time. You don’t have the heart to make any stale jokes about it this year.

General Stewart starts things off as usual. “Your Majesty, we still have bottlenecks with Endo Steel and Ferro Fibrous production, as well as raw Battlemech and ASF production. If we wish to maximize growth and build up our forces to the point where we can engage in landing operations on Drac targets in the near future we will need to ensure that we continue to grow in these areas. We recommend continuing to expand our factories on Griffon IV, as well as build new Mech and ASF lines there.”

Jeremy then takes the podium, he’s managed to shed the War God look again, which speaks well of his therapists. “Your Majesty, for Ground Forces procurement we have the following requests. I will note that our expansion of the 1st Infantry Division is hampered by a lack of Ferro Fibrous production, which really needs to be expanded as rapidly as possible.” he brings up a graphic showing the proposed procurement.
    • Mech Forces
      • 2 Standard Mech Regiments
      • 1 Pathfinder Regiment
    • Conventional Forces
      • 2 Armored Regiments
He also shows a graphic illustrating how the lack of Ferro Fibrous production is impacting conventional force procurement.

The gap between just how many tanks and such you could be building and how few you actually are due to shortages in strategic materials that had been long neglected in favor of aerospace materials is… sobering.

General Reyes then comes up... With her powerpoints.

“Your Majesty, while we have no carriers commissioning this year requiring new ASF groups, we do have on the horizon four Silver Towers which will each require 3 wings. We therefore recommend procuring 3 Carrier Wings this year, so as to get on top of the requirements and not overload our strategic material stockpiles.”

Well, that was quick at least.

Admiral Benjamin is next, with his flip chart and two aides this time, both looking young enough to be fresh from the Aerie. “Your Majesty, I’ll keep it short and simple as well. We have 17 Large and 1 regular dropship slip available for new production, and here is what we in Your Illustrious Navy… Minion One?” the youngster on the left flips the page of the chart. “Desire to have produced… Minion Two?” The second youngster blows a bosun's pipe.
    • Large Dropships (17)
      • 7 Majestic-class
      • 10 Shannon-class
    • Regular Dropship (1)
      • 1 Bainbridge-class
“In an effort to keep the commandant of the Aerie from stabbing me in my sleep, we will not be requesting any PPG-01’s this year.”

General Stewart simply nods as Admiral Benjamin sits down, looking down the conference table to you, “That is all from us, Your Majesty.”

Bridget is more subdued than normal. “Your Majesty, we are prepared to assist in boosting our strategic production, as well as both Mech and ASF production, upon your command. I promise that my people are chomping at the bit, the debriefings from the rescued slaves from the Dracs has been… very motivational.”

Isoroku arrives late, having been in meetings with the NRR and NRI ambassadors. “Your Majesty, I have nothing specific at the moment, but I think I have the ambassadors from both the NRI and NRR ready to start discussing a joint military command structure for the prosecution of the war against the Dracs, but this will be contingent on how the revolt in NRI space plays out.”

He pauses “Oh, and my Cultural Affairs team would like to run a general cultural festival as a way of welcoming our latest refugees.”

Jake looks as grim as you’ve ever seen him. “I don’t have anything directly applicable to the war effort, Your Majesty, but on the expansion and growth front we are in a position to setup outreach centers from various Griffon institutions on Calliope IV. This would allow us to accelerate the process of bringing them on board with us, as well as making them more capable once they are rowing beside us.”

Mary is next, looking somewhat frazzled from how busy she is. “Your Majesty, going to stick with the theme of keeping things simple. We have two recommendations, Electronics and Materials research.”

Neither Harry nor Janet are present for the meeting, being busy implementing projects that began last year.

Two of your Monoliths are dispatched to Tarentum, carrying the two units that are being sent along with logistics and escorts. And it is a good thing about all the escorts.

Pirates attack at the Tarentum zenith, but are handily dispatched by the escorting Bainbridge class destroyers on their first deployment. None of the ramshackle pirate dropships got anywhere close to the convoy.

The 3rd/1st AD and the 4th/1st ID have reportedly begun operations against the rebels, but there are no details yet available thanks to the communication lags. You did get a letter from your grandson, but it’s the typical sort of thing you’d expect from a young man on the eve of finally seeing action.

You do get better astrographic data on New Capricorn and Griff’s Leap, although not too much detail.

New Capricorn is an interesting red dwarf system that would be completely useless in terms of colonization if it weren’t for New Capricorn II, a massive gas giant which actually supports a pair of massive moons just barely capable of supporting life, extreme range scans show lichens and algae. The thermal energy from New Capricorn II allows New Capricorn III to also support life, although it appears to be a water world with only a few tiny scattered islands visible in the long range scans.

Griff’s Leap has no rocky planets at all, being composed of multiple dense asteroid belts and a trio of gas giants. Long range scanning shows a high probability that the asteroid belts are exceedingly rich in raw materials.

Back at home, the Department of Periphery Studies has shown up at the Palace again, although you are very puzzled as to what they are up to, as all of the ‘tenured faculty’ are wearing evening dress, complete with tailcoats and top hats, carrying elaborately ‘carved’ canes that are made from paper-mache, with tap dance plates on the soles of their court shoes. And then proceed to just march around the Palace over and over and over again.

According to the liaison they’re just as puzzled as anybody else.

It also looks like Pollux Man might need to yield his Weirdness Crown to Griffsport Man, as a video has come out showing a couple Griffsport natives hot-rodding shopping carts and racing them down public streets. While wearing Superman outfits, complete with capes.

According to them it had been part of an online challenge. Lovely.

On Griffon IV they’d discovered a seam of ‘bonanza’ ore, mixed gold and silver that could be easily mined with just a simple shovel. The planet experiences a massive boom in immigration as fortune seekers swarm.

Luckily the strike is on land that is well above the future water line of the oceans, so no worries in that regard. It does result in somewhat strained accommodations for all of the new immigrants, but with the prospect of becoming filthy rich most don’t seem to be complaining all that loudly.

Admiral Benjamin has requested permission to mothball the Defiant class, with the lead ship being preserved as a museum vessel and the rest to be downgraded to remove all classified technology before being put on the market for sale to allies. The new PGL-50’s are so much more capable than the older platforms that it makes little sense to waste skilled crews on the older birds.

Meanwhile the AFGE is proposing a long-range raid on Kilburrough, or Kilburugh, or however it is spelled, as you still haven’t gotten a definite answer in that regard.

What they wish to do is stage through Atarashi, jumping in at a 30 degree angle from the Zenith to recharge, then jumping to the target. The raid would be a Reconnaissance in Force raid, with a mission of gathering data to guide future operations.

The proposed composition of the raid is as follows.

There has been a flurry of upgrade and new construction work on the various strategic materials factories and forges which has seen a significant boost in available resources for future construction. You are still short on Mech and ASF factories, as well as facing future shortages of Endo Steel and Ferro Fibrous, and then you have the prospect of needing to start to build forges for Ferro Carbide armor in the near future.

You spend hours going from keel laying to keel laying ceremony, dragging Thanh along for all of the Majestics that have been laid down. Luckily everything appears to be on schedule in regards to ship building, with a few minor scares that managed to get sorted out quickly enough to avoid delays.

Ground forces procurement also goes well. You are extremely impressed by the performance of the newly minted Mechwarriors for 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored, as they show themselves to be an unusually gifted graduating class from the Aerie, resulting in the two regiments being certified as ‘Crack’.

The economic development teams on Nowy Gdansk finally get over their drunken stupors long enough to actually do their bloody jobs. You see a nice boost in economic activity on the planet as they continue to expand their industrial base.

It is when looking over the data on the upgrades to the refit and repair yard that you find yourself kicking yourself, and wanting to hunt down Admiral Benjamin to kick him. With all the drama involving Kuroisara, the reports about how difficult it was to refit and return to service the two ‘haunted’ Monoliths and the rest, it had completely slipped everybody's mind to authorize laying down new Jumpship construction, since the two slips were finally open. You make a few calls, and rather than burden the treasury you break into the Privy Purse to finance the first year of construction of two Caravel-class jumpships.

The forestry work on Griffon IV has finally been certified as complete. The new forests are all in the temperate ranges, and have already started to have a noticeable impact on the planetary climate. Natural oxygen production is rising, allowing for an easing in restrictions for colonization.

A series of cultural festivals are held throughout the Griffon Empire, to generally positive reviews. It’s noted that many of the new refugees, especially the Kilburrough slaves, seem quite puzzled by it all, and event security was very busy keeping them from engaging in the typical means the slave caste of Kilburrough ‘celebrate’ anything, namely by trying to have sex with anything female since that was literally the only ‘entertainment’ those sick bastards allowed their proles.

The new Outreach Centers and University Extensions on Calliope IV open to general acclaim, the waiting list of scholars who wish to engage in research there is fairly large, as is the waiting list of prospective students on the other end. All in all it appears to be a very successful endeavor with great promise for the future.

Your research teams have cracked the basic theory and science behind Hyperpulse Generators. Translating this knowledge into actual hardware is something else, but appears quite doable. The largest challenge is the limited range of these first generation sets, only 30 light years. You’d need to build a string of stations simply to connect to the NRI, although you’d be able to connect to the NRR very easily as they are pretty much right next door in astrographic terms.

The work on materials research and power generation has borne fruit, leading to industries retooling and new power plants being constructed to take advantage of the increased efficiency.

Turn 57 - Men Will Suffer

Operation Sea Giant - Combat Report

No combat reported, dropships formed up in Atarashi but did not close with the formation while it was recharging, both inbound and outbound. At Kilburrough (spelling confirmed) large defense forces formed up around impressive orbital defenses, including enormous stations that the scanners show are likely armed with capital grade weaponry, but declined to move to engage our forces.

Gallingly, the locals on Kilburrough contacted the fleet with a rather smarmy message ‘regretting’ that they are only permitted to make sales to parties authorized by the Dragon, although they did offer to transmit the required paperwork to request authorized purchaser status. And even had the gall to include a ‘catalogue’.

The commander’s response to this was a fifteen minute exposition on the likely ancestry of the entire ruling class of the planet that never once made use of a single profanity, and never once included anything even vaguely bipedal.

The rather offended response that there was no need to be rude over being denied the opportunity to sample their fine wares almost gave the CO an aneurysm. Talk about missing the point.

Operation Sea Giant - System Survey Report

Kilburrough is a large, young yellow-orange star in the Main Sequence with nine Kepler orbits.
    1. A dwarf planet that has an unusually low albedo
    2. A dwarf planet with no atmosphere and significant cratering
    3. A large terrestrial planet that appears to be very heavily populated and industrialized with the exception of a single continent, which appears to be nearly pristine and is evidently where the ruling class dwells
    4. A large terrestrial planet, nearly the twin of III, that is completely industrialized
    5. A sparse asteroid belt, hosting a single well defended orbital habitat.
    6. A massive gas supergiant, only marginally smaller than Griffon VI, with over a hundred moons. There are several dozen orbital habitats in orbit, both industrial, residential, and military. An exceptionally large heavily armed station appears to be the anchor for a large shipyard, but only Mammoths were detected in the Dropship bays, while there were several Monoliths in the process of construction.
    7. A sparse asteroid belt, no sign of exploitation
    8. A dense asteroid belt with multiple mining stations, extensive traffic between here and VI
    9. A dense asteroid belt with similar levels of exploitation as VIII
    -----

You frown at the data, those defense stations will be extremely difficult to deal with, but it strikes you as very odd that they haven’t shared that technology with the Dracs, despite joining them. Something is… odd about this.

The simplest explanation is that the alliance between Kilburrough and the Dracs isn’t quite what it appears. That it is a pure alliance of convenience on both sides, with the government of the planet simply being part of this branch of the Combine on paper, while retaining functional independence. But you suspect that there is more to it than that.

Against the advice of your staff you do take a peek at the ‘catalog’, and promptly head straight to the firing range to blow off a great deal of steam. The very first section was for ‘Pillow Slaves’.

Those people are beyond sick, and you will take great pleasure in purging them from the universe.

You finally find out what is up with the Department of Periphery Studies latest hijinks, evidently they’ve all convinced themselves that they have proper government jobs and as such need to be properly dressed for the very important work of… they’re not very clear on what this very important work actually is, but evidently it is very important and requires them to be dressed in full evening wear. And they evidently also are all hiding yellow rubber duckies, for some reason this is very important and any ‘highly important government employee’ who fails to present their yellow rubber duckie for inspection upon meeting another ‘highly important government employee’ is required to hop around on one foot quacking like a duck.

SARAH recommends formally assigning these ‘very important government employees’ to the Ministry of Silly Walks, just to see what happens.

Several days later you get an alert from SARAH, something relatively small has jumped in well away from the nadir jump point but outside the system jump limit. It’s too far out to be certain, but the mass reading indicates at most a Scout with a single dropship, and there is no sign of a drive plume.

The contact ignores all attempts to communicate with it, but before any dropships can close to intercept it jumps away having completed a standard recharge cycle.

Your dropships continue to the location anyways and scan the local space thoroughly, in case they were trying to be sneaky… and pick up something unusual. Encased in an extremely large chunk of synthetic crystal is a single perfectly preserved cherry blossom, floating in space just outside the destruction radius of the K-F jump. It was more than large enough that your sensors were able to find it with incredible ease, and appears to be completely inert. There is no writing, no carved symbols, nothing, just a crystal encased cherry blossom.

It is currently in a lab in the Aerie being very thoroughly scanned, but so far they have discovered nothing of any real interest.

A seamount has breached the ocean just offshore of Phoenix. The planetary coast guard had been monitoring the situation and there was no disruption to trade. Images and video of the eruption are very popular, and quite spectacular, as the volcano appears to be very vigorously growing, sending jets of lava over a kilometer into the sky before it rains down in a fiery curtain. There are multiple vents and fissures surrounding the central caldera, and it appears that within several years you will have a new island near the Fingers.

You receive reports from the fighting on Tarentum. Your forces have decisively engaged the main rebel force and broke them on the field. The battle was reportedly very vicious despite the fact that the rebels were qualitatively outmatched, outnumbered, and outgunned. Your grandson’s unit was mentioned in dispatches for ‘elan under fire’, with your grandson reportedly accounting for the enemy's HQ unit at the peak of the fighting. On the other hand, he is reportedly in the hospital with ‘minor injuries’ and by the time the missive had reached you was expected to be back on duty.

He included a letter with a photograph, looking an odd mix of disgruntled and extremely proud. The ‘minor injuries’ are just that, it appears he broke two fingers on one hand and has serious bruising. The report does not go into any real details, only describing the injuries as ‘sustained while capturing the rebel field commander’.

The expeditionary commander is confident that they’ll be able to withdraw and return home by next year, as NRI forces are redeploying in strength and have taken over most of the fighting once the enemy mechs were routed.

    Turn 57 - A High Price

Your military commanders come to you with an audacious plan. They propose to strike hard at the heart of the Dragon on Nowa Warszawa. The proposed plan would use 4 Monoliths and 3 Tramps, giving 45 collars worth of lift.
    • Operation Bronco
      • Space Forces - Overall Command - Admiral Thanh Griffith
        • Task Force 1 - Jumpship Protection
          • 2 Shannon-class Armored Cruisers
            • HMS Shannon
            • HMS Immortalite
        • Task Force 2 - Strike Element
          • 1 Renown-class Flagship
            • HMS Renown
          • 10 Royal Sovereign-class Battleships
            • HMS Royal Sovereign
            • HMS Empress of Nowy Gdansk
            • HMS Ramillies
            • HMS Resolution
            • HMS Repulse
            • HMS Revenge
            • HMS Centurion
            • HMS Barfleur
            • HMS Bellerophon
            • HMS Penelope
          • 8 Shannon-class Armored Cruisers
            • HMS Northampton
            • HMS Imperieuse
            • HMS Orlando
            • HMS Australia
            • HMS Undaunted
            • HMS Narcissus
            • HMS Galatea
          • 7 Majestic-class Battleships
            • HMS Majestic
            • HMS Prince George
            • HMS Victorious
            • HMS Prince Jeremy
            • HMS Jupiter
            • HMS Mars
            • HMS Caesar
        • Landing Force
          • 1 Tarawa-class Regimental Assault Transport
          • 7 Newport-class Landing Ship - Regimental
          • 6 Newport-C-class Attack Transport
          • 3 Roadrunner-class Fast Attack Transport
      • Ground Forces - Overall Command - General His Imperial Highness Crown Prince Jeremy Griffith
        • 1st Brigade, 1st Armored
          • Would link up with the already deployed Special Ops regiment on planet
        • 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored
        • 5th Brigade, 1st Armored
    • Objective
      • Seize and hold a continent on Nowa Warszawa
        • Based on our intelligence and sensor data we believe that the target continent is not the capital area for the Dracs, but is rather an industrial and agricultural center for the planet.
        • Reports from extracted Home Army forces indicate that there are several factory complexes on this continent dedicated to the production of the Jenner battlemech and the Sabre ASF. Denying these factories to the enemy is the primary goal of this operation.
    • Plan
      • Force will arrive at the L5 Pirate point. Task Force 1 will remain with the jumpships while they recharge, then remain once the jumpships depart to bring in possible reinforcements as needed.
      • Task Force 2 will take control of the orbitals and engage in precision orbital bombardment of targets on the main continent, focusing on identified military bases.
      • Task Force 3 will prepare for a combat drop
        • The Pathfinder Regiment will make an orbital drop to secure the LZ
      • Task Force 3 will perform a combat drop
      • 1st Brigade, 1st Armored will secure the LZ
      • 2nd and 5th Brigade, 1st Armored, will begin aggressive combat operations aiming to capture or destroy the identified factory complexes.
      • Based on the overall situation, General Griffith will determine if it will be possible to hold the continent against counter attack and will decide whether or not to withdraw.
You look at Jeremy, who nods at you. “Mom, we can do this. Moreover, we have to do this. We can’t risk giving the Dracs time to recover, but rather we need to keep kicking them while they are down. If we waited until we had all the forces we’d want to have, we’d wind up chasing our own tails because there will always be good reasons for waiting just a year longer. We need to go now, and put it to the touch.”

    []Approve Operation Bronco
    []Deny Operation Bronco

In support of Operation Bronco, if you decide to go forward with it, you can ‘activate’ the Home Army, making use of your Special Forces units to coordinate strategic strikes against Drac targets across the planet. This will put the resistance fighters at great risk. If you wind up having to pull back after bloodying the Dragon’s nose like this, the resulting purges and crackdowns would be ruinous.

    []Activate the Home Army
[]Tell them to keep their heads down

This is a MAJOR decision point in the quest. I will require at least 10 votes for the winning decision about Operation Bronco. If the questors decide to go forward, the next several posts will primarily be combat reports and decisions, with the questors controlling Thanh and Jeremy.

Turn 57 - The Odds Are Stacked Against Us

Combat Report - Operation Bronco Orbital Phase
Friendly Losses - HMS Galatea, 8 ASF severely damaged, 1 Lost, pilot recovered
    Enemy Losses - 24 Achilles, 14 Leopard-CV, 162 Sabre

Complete orbital supremacy has been achieved. There were very limited enemy assets in orbit, however they did engage in kamikaze tactics. Only a single Achilles got close enough to make an attack, and its wreckage took out HMS Galatea. She is a constructive total loss, however the entire crew was able to be taken off safely and the wreckage destroyed as per protocol.

Combat Report - Initial Orbital Drop - 1st Pathfinder Regiment
Friendly Losses - 2 Mech’s damaged in the drop, no losses
Enemy Losses - 1 Internal Security Battalion destroyed, prisoners taken

The initial orbital drop easily secured the planned landing zone with no effective opposition. The internal security forces present were caught completely flat footed and seemed utterly shocked that them simply ordering our forces so surrender to the ‘Might of the Dragon’ was met with a charging particle projection cannon. Needless to say, we now have to deal with a battalion's worth of very confused prisoners who seem to think that we cannot possibly be serious about attacking the planet.

Orbital surveillance indicates no more than a single regiment’s worth of light mechs hesitantly moving towards the landing zone, indications are that they will arrive within 3 days. Force composition based on orbital reconnaissance indicates that the force consists of a mix of Wasp and Locust mechs with no supporting elements.

The Home Army is generally obeying the instructions to keep their heads down, however you are receiving contact reports about enemy positions. Force estimates have been revised sharply downward; there are no more than two conventional regiments worth of forces on the entire continent, in addition to the light Mech regiment. According to the Home Army and reports from your special operations forces the majority of the mobile Mech forces on the planet departed just over a week ago ‘in a great hurry’.

Combat Report - Ground Operations - Phase 1
Friendly Losses - 5 mechs with damaged internals, 10 mechs with armor damage. Minor injuries. Six dead infantry troopers.
Enemy Losses - Entire Light Mech Regiment destroyed, the mechwarriors are of decidedly poor quality and it is quickly determined that this is a training unit of raw recruits.

The enemy forces attacked in a very disjointed manner and were handily dispatched. The only fatalities on our side was a single squad of power armor troopers who somehow got stuck in a burning structure and were unable to escape in time when the roof collapsed on top of them.

The majority of the enemy forces were taken prisoner, morale was exceptionally poor and it became glaringly obvious that this was a training unit that was nowhere near combat ready. Under questioning the prisoners let slip that the Dragon’s daughter had ‘refused the honor of being summoned to the Dragon’s side’.

ISF sabotage operations result in some minor damage to the LZ security perimeter, local residents turn in the ISF agents without much prompting. The civilian population appears to be highly supportive of your forces.

All factory complexes are in your hands. The continent has been secured with no remaining enemy formations present. Orbital strikes have disrupted attempts by the Dracs to send forces from the main continent.

You are Jeremy Griffith, on scene commander. Your losses to date are significantly below even best case estimates. You have 3 intact factory complexes, 2 geared towards producing light mechs, with significant raw material stockpiles, 1 geared towards producing the Sabre aerospace fighter. You have a friendly local populace, many of whom have made it clear that they either are Home Army or are friendly towards the Home Army and are willing to support your ‘liberation’ of their home.

In regards to the factory complexes, do you…

    []Demolish themFactories are destroyed
[]Use them to equip friendly Home Army forcesYou will be able to produce 2 battalions worth of Jenner’s from stockpiled materials
    []Write-InEffects to be determined

In regards to the overall plan, do you...

[]Request reinforcements from home1st Garrison Division will be sent
[]Prepare to evacuate civilians and withdrawEvacuate as many civilians as you can fit and prepare to retreat
    []Write-inEffects to be determined

Turn 57 - Our Resolve Relentless

    Griffon System

A lone Scout, identified by SARAH as being the same one involved with the cherry blossom, jumps in at the Zenith point under the guns of the jump point defenses. It is carrying a single K-1 Dropshuttle on it’s lone docking hardpoint.

When challenged the jumpship does not answer directly, instead broadcasting the following…

“Gurifon teikoku no sonkei sa reru kōgō ni, aisatsu to aisatsu. Shōgun Kurita Siriwan wa, Takeda Ōmichi ten'nō nikawatte, sono na de, kanojo no shukenja to anata jishin no shoyū-mono to no ma no heiwa o tassei suru tame ni kōshō ni hairu koto o nozonde imasu.”

It takes a few minutes, but you soon have a good translation. “To the revered Empress of the Griffon Empire, greetings and salutations. The Shogun Kurita Siriwan, on behalf of and in the name of Emperor Takeda Daido, desires to enter negotiations to attain peace between her sovereign's holdings and your own.”

You blink a few times, this is rather unexpected, a fission in the Drac ranks, and a Kurita acknowledging herself as serving a non Kurita. Fortunately they seem to be quite patient in waiting for a response, giving you time to do some research with your daughter and SARAH.

One piece of data comes to light pretty quickly, the Takeda are a cadet branch of the Japanese Imperial Clan, and as such a Takeda could, technically, be said to be a rightful link to the Imperial Family. It’s a somewhat indirect path of legitimacy, but it is there. It appears that this Siriwan has discarded the Dragon’s claim to sole rulership and is instead harkening back to the ancient Shogunate, which has… very interesting implications.

[]Accept negotiations, let us see where this rabbit hole takes us
[]A Kurita is a Kurita, regardless of their stripes

QM Note - I apologize in advance, the Japanese above is from Giggle Translate, so is unlikely to be all that good, pretend it is grammatically perfect Japanese of the most formal variety, if you could.

    Nowa Warszawa System

Sufficient volunteers among the Home Army have been gathered to find pilots for all 72 Jenners that the factories are able to build before running out of essential raw materials. The training is… amusing, and a point is made of recording all of it for a future training montage video. In the end you have 2 battalions of green as grass light mechs stumbling around and not falling flat on their face, and at least managing to usually avoid stepping on things that they shouldn’t. You aren’t all that sure about their gunnery yet, but they’re enthusiastic at practice.

Orbital surveillance has determined that the Dracs remaining forces on the planet are formidable defensively, but not a significant threat to your forces on planet offensively apart from the Otomo, and even that is but a single Assault weight regiment that appears to be glued to the Dragon’s Palace. Orbital strikes have scoured the light outbuildings and office blocks surrounding the palace proper, but it is quickly obvious that the palace itself is a massively fortified and hardened bunker more than capable of holding up to the relatively light orbital bombardment assets you have available.

There is one light Mech unit that appears to be another training unit, judging by the composition and skill level displayed. Multiple very heavy conventional armored regiments that would make any assault very bloody indeed as they appear to be well equipped with Demolisher and Behemoth tanks. Large numbers of infantry units that, unlike the poor saps caught out on your landing, are somewhat better equipped with the PBI supported by Hetzers.

The Dracs have made several attempts to send recon assets to determine your positions and strength, but your absolute ASF dominance allows you to destroy them well short of your positions, denying the Dragon any intelligence about your positions.

With the arrival of the 1st Garrison Division on the planet you are absolutely certain of your ability to hold the continent from any push from the rest of the planet, and so long as you maintain orbital supremacy you are confident that your forces can remain here indefinitely.

You could make a push to take the entire planet at this point, but it would be incredibly risky as the sheer numbers of exceptionally dangerous tanks dug in in cities and the massive numbers of infantry would risk enormous casualties. You’d probably win in the end, but the attrition would be almost Pyrrhic.

[]Dig in and wait for reinforcements
    []Audacity, Audacity, Forever Audacity

    -----

    Griffon System

It is that time of year again, and even with your forces deployed on an offensive the budget meetings wait for no Empress.

    Or something like that.

General Stewart is up first. “Your Majesty, with your son deployed I will be handling the ground procurement brief.” she says formally. “But before I get into that, we have the ability to produce an additional Heavy or Assault Mech Regiment a year now, however we are still limited to only a single light/medium regiment per year until we expand those factories. We are still bottlenecked on endosteel, although thanks to the push last year we are less bottlenecked on ferrofibrous armor.”

She consults her notes. “For Battlemech procurement we are recommending 3 Assault Regiments for 5th Brigade, 2nd Armored, with the new forces being immediately deployed to Nowa Warszawa. In addition, we recommend the procurement of a single Pathfinder Regiment to flesh out 1st Brigade, 2nd Armored and likewise dispatching that unit to the battle front. For conventional vehicle procurement, we can procure 4 regiments worth of combat vehicles this year thanks to the increased ferrofibrous production. Therefore, we recommend procuring 3 Mechanized Regiments and 1 Armored Regiment, to flesh out 1st and 2nd Brigades of the 1st Infantry Division. We would then rotate both Brigades to Tarentum to relieve 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored, which would be sent to Nowa Warszawa as well.”

General Reyes takes the podium then, once more with her powerpoint of DOOM.

“Your Majesty, we recommend the continued procurement of between 2 and 4 Carrier Wings in order to prepare for the deployment of the White Towers in the near future. In addition, we would like to procure a Planetary Defense Wing to dispatch to Nowa Warszawa in order to boost our aerospace dominance in theater.”

Admiral Benjamin then bounds to the fore, his inevitable flip chart and long-suffering aides in tow. “Your Majesty, we’ve got a lot of slipways open, and many things we need to fill them with, so we’ll get started.” he nods to his minion, who brings up the first chart.
    • Large Dropships (8 slips)
      • 3 Tarawa class Regimental Assault Transports
      • 3 Newport class Landing Ship - Regiment
      • 2 Newport-C class Attack Transports
    • Regular Dropships (39)
      • 4 Ensign class Training Dropships
      • 15 Bainbridge class Parasite Destroyers
      • 20 PGL-50 class Parasite Gunships
“Your Majesty, the focus on logistics for our large slips is to address the challenges transporting our ever growing forces is causing us, better to have too much spacelift than not enough. As for the Ensigns, well… Minion? Show Her Majesty what I am risking if I do not recommend increasing our training dropship cadre.”

    LpwJttlJFhJP7ABAET06t8t4grqtwxe6Nm0BLI8PVPCFHJFtOq87I4TIZ9S8767y0HisVIcTf3t_UZBQTahBvBirfD0sDI2rAgaR1vBwzS2oPgl8gRqyuRIxNRcyZXdec-Vl8K6c

The Admiral waits for the laughter to die down. “But seriously, we do need to be able to train more dropship crews, especially with the PPG-01s.”

Bridget takes over, still chuckling a little. “Your Majesty, we have free DoME teams and that’s a terrible thing, because they are having ideas, and bored engineers… ideas…” she shudders dramatically. “We recommend setting them on planting tropical forests on Griffon IV, should help accelerate the planets terraforming and thus ability to support a population. We’re ready to expand those new Mech factories at your word, and build lots and lots of orbital infrastructure, just tell us what to do!”

Isoroku and Jake are both closeted dealing with the repercussions of the transmission from the distaff Kurita, while Mary is on Nowy Gdansk handling some issues there. She does send you a memo, however.

Your Majesty, some of my more… enterprising… engineers here have gone ahead and without authorization conducted some R&D on their own time and dime, but without authorization or permission. The end result is… useful, but I am having to soothe ruffled feathers and deal with this situation. Specifically they have developed a new generation of Industrial Mechs, which is useful from the point of view of making it easier to engage in grand engineering, but annoying in that they’re going to be the ones reaping the financial rewards of the discovery, not us.

In regards to future research, we recommend Electronics and Communications general research. While this will slightly delay HPG research, we feel that the combination of base tech research might be highly beneficial towards HPG work.

Neither Janet nor Harry have any new projects for you to consider.

Turn 57 - And Arrogance Their Weakness

    Nowa Warszawa

Reinforcements arrive, allowing your forces to be confident in holding their beachhead against any foreseeable counter attack. There is increasing partisan activity among the majority non-Polish civilian population, primarily sabotage, roadside bombs, and the like. Polish natives are also engaging in retaliatory attacks on non-Polish civilians, and violence between the groups is growing.

In the last week there have been 158 murders attributed to the violence, almost all the victims are civilians from the two groups. Attempts to mediate between them have so far failed, with at least one such meeting being bombed by radical Polish elements, killing three of our soldiers who were present. We have taken about a dozen casualties from snipers, believed to be non-Polish insurgents, possibly ISF embeds.

Curfews have been established and infantry forces are currently enforcing separation zones between the two populations, but the situation is highly volatile. The new Mechanized Regiments are finding themselves acting as military police as we attempt to keep things from boiling over.

It is noted that several dozen non-Polish civilians who had publicly advocated for calm were subsequently found dead despite enhanced security, mostly in bombings. Unfortunately in at least one case that bombing was perpetrated by a Home Army cell, who have been taken into custody after it was found they were engaging in numerous revenge attacks.

Funerals for the dead have proven to be highly prone to violence, requiring very heavy military police presence to keep things from erupting into riots. It is sadly expected that the situation will grow worse as more of the planet is liberated. We have two populations on this planet who absolutely hate and despise each other. This is not going to end cleanly.

Interestingly, contrary to expectations there have been no propaganda transmissions from the Drac Palace, although the Otomo are confirmed to be present. No threats, no demands, no challenges, complete silence. There have been no actual attempts at a counter attack, just units digging in in defensive works, although the Dracs make a point of setting up their defensive lines in areas with large numbers of civilians, making it very… challenging… to deal with from orbit. After all, who wants to fire sub-cap weapons at a playground where there are kids playing around the dug in enemy tanks?

In orbit things are cleaner, the reinforcements from home have arrived and Thanh leads a fast task force centered around Bainbridges off to strike at the remaining shipyards. There is minimal resistance, but both yards self-destruct in nuclear detonations as she closes on them. Surrounding habitats and stations also detonate as their own self-destructs activate, obviously the result of fanatical ISF agents.

You now have complete control of system space.

How do you handle the situation?
[]Favor the Poles and crush the Drac civilians ruthlessly
[]Attempt to mediate between both sides and keep the peace
    []Write-In

    Griffon

You decide to allow the K-1 to land on Griffin’s Roost, although you are most certainly not present at the drop port for fear of this being a suicide attack.

It isn’t, but perhaps far more surprising.

There are two occupants in the shuttle, the pilot and one other who remains aboard, so you don’t know who they are. But the pilot, judging by the voice in the coms, disembarks. Not dressed in a flight suit or anything practical like that, but rather in an incredibly formal kimono, with all of the traditional accoutrements of a samurai at a formal occasion, everything done perfectly, not a single hair out of place… and very obviously Siriwan Kurita herself, come to conduct the negotiations on her own in complete defiance of expected behavior.

    This is a surprise.

It remains to be seen what kind of surprise.

What posture do you take in the negotiations?

[]Aggressive - the Dracs are your enemies, first and last, and you trust her not at all
[]Formal - She has chosen to embrace formality, do the same, and see what comes of it

    Griffon

You decide to match Siriwan’s formality with your own, but to put the Kuritan off balance you go for maximum European style formality.

Apart from a slight twitch, she doesn’t react as she enters the banquet hall, the twitch barely noticeable, and seemingly more of a sort of mental ‘reset’ than anything else, as if she were shifting gears, and sure enough, when she reaches precisely the point demanded by etiquette she dips into a quite smooth curtsey, despite wearing a kimono which is plainly not suited for such.

What follows is hours of meaningless small talk, about topics ranging from the quality of the food to the lovely weather. She seems endlessly patient, another point to the young lady. You do revise your estimate of her age downward a bit, she’s likely still a teenager, no more than 20 at the most, with the very slightly unfinished look of one that age that is only obvious under close examination. Yet she holds herself with impeccable poise.

You also notice that she has callouses on her hands of the sort developed with hours on the range and training salle. This is not some pampered flower of a noble girl good only for the whirl of the social circuit.

Finally you get to the meat of the discussion, once the last dishes are cleared away and it is time for serious talk over after dinner drinks. You note that she takes the tiniest possible sip of champagne, barely even wetting her lips, before setting it aside.

“You have come to me seeking terms for peace.” You open up with, lifting one eyebrow to turn the phrase into a question.

“Indeed, Your Imperial Majesty.” she replies, catching your volley and sending it back without revealing much of anything.

That sets the tone, and several interesting bits come out. When asked about what her bottom line terms are, she rather surprises you.

“The Kuroisora and Sukaishi systems, and that the body of my mother be repatriated from Nowa Warszawa.” she says promptly, “Beyond that, if my little brother comes into your power, that you treat him kindly as he is but a small boy and innocent of our father’s crimes.”

“So you admit that…” you are interrupted before you can finish.

“That my father is a monster, unworthy of his position?” she asks, crooking one eyebrow. “That he, like my grandfather before him, succumbed to pride and ambition?” she waits a beat. “Do you happen to know what is required for a man to join the Otomo or the Amphigean Assault Group under my father’s rule?”

“No, beyond skill at a mech.” you reply cautiously.

“The candidate must prove their loyalty to the Dragon by personally executing, with a sword, an elder family member, to show that they place their loyalty to the Dragon above mere family ties or respect for their elders. My elder brother was the commander of the Amphigeans, and proved his loyalty to the Dragon by beheading our mother at my father’s command.'' She says the entire thing in a very calm conversational voice.

You blink at that, “And yourself?”

“I am but a mere girl, Your Imperial Majesty, hardly worthy of service to the Dragon. I was sent as a child to a monastery on Kuroisora, no doubt to hide the shame of having a mere daughter.'' She takes a sip of water, perfectly composed. “When my brother disappeared, father saw fit to summon me to Okusawa, on the pretext that I was to take my brother’s place as his heir. Unfortunately, I was quite aware that this was but a pretext.” Another sip of water. “And so I declined, with a most respectful letter advising my esteemed father that as the only remaining family member suitable for me to prove my loyalty to the Dragon was, in fact, the Dragon, I would be most pleased to show the depth of my devotion.”

She smiles, and it does not reach anywhere near her eyes. Indeed, if a hungry Great Shark had seen that smile, it would turn and swim the other way as fast as possible, knowing itself in the presence of a deadlier predator.

“I am informed that Father did not take it well, but was constrained in his response. His naming me Gunji-no-Kanrei was a pretext that arrived mere hours before your reconnaissance flotilla did, along with a command to return to Okusawa for ‘strategic consultations’. Most proper for the Gunji-no-Kanrei to do so, of course, but I was able to delay.” She smiles again, a bit more warmly. “Takeda Daido, who has taken up the mantle of Emperor, was most accommodating of my request to form a bakufu in His name, and named me Shogun. The people of Kuroisora and Sukaishi have most graciously sworn their loyalty to the bakufu, and I have confirmed their leaders as daimyo.” She takes a sip of water. “Thus my bottom line, Your Imperial Majesty. I make no claims to New Sekigahara, Atarashi, or Okusawa, and have no wish to be associated with the abomination that is Kilburrough. If the people of those worlds wish to desert my father’s failing regime for my realm, they are welcome to emigrate, apart, of course, for ISF agents of my fathers.”

You raise an eyebrow at that, having let the young woman speak freely and mentally filing away information… why would the Dragon summon her to Okusawa and not New Sekigahara, for example… “You are so confident in your ability to identify ISF agents, then?” you ask, only to get an unexpected laugh from the young woman.

“Your Imperial Majesty, my father is a pretentious fool who sees enemies behind every blade of grass. Any who wish to serve him as an ISF agent are required to sacrifice the small toe on their left foot to prove their devotion to the Dragon. Simply require any you suspect to remove their shoes, or if you wish to be subtle, invite them inside a traditional space where etiquette demands that they remove their shoes. Any with amputated little toes on the left foot can safely be determined to be ISF agents.”

    Nowa Warszawa

With the additional forces in place it has become a waiting game. Tensions continue to boil over between the Polish and non-Polish populations, but your infantry are generally able to keep things from escalating past shouting, the occasional fisticuffs, and rude language. It’s quite amazing how polite suits of power armor can make people.

There are still guerrilla attacks, but they are scattered. One Orb Weaver has been badly damaged with a roadside IED, and a Soldatin took a rocket propelled anti-armor grenade to the cockpit, shaking up the pilot but only requiring minor repairs.

It is also proving nearly impossible to put together a civilian government independent of your authority, the native Poles tend to settle disputes with their fists, with many accusations of collaboration being constantly leveled between political opponents, even when both were members of the Home Army itself. It’s rather maddening, almost a year in and there’s not even the start of a governing structure in place beyond ‘defer to the Griffon Commander’ which is pulling you away from actually prosecuting the war.

With the influx of forces, especially the additional Assault Regiments, your thoughts shift to offensive operations. The next smallest continent on the Nowa Warszawa is defended by three conventional regiments of armored vehicles and a sizable infantry force, but no Mechs and no significant fixed defenses that have not already been reduced by orbital bombardment.

You believe that you can take the continent by storm, with a major drop comprising 1st, 2nd, and 5th Brigades of the 1st Armored Division. This way you would have far more than the classic 3 to 1 force disparity deemed adequate for offensive operations, especially considering the differences in unit quality.

    []Deny Operation Bronze Predator

The Navy meanwhile would like to hit Atarashi with another raid, making use of 2 Monolith-class jumpships to transport a mixed force of 8 Bainbridge-class Parasite Destroyers, 6 Shannon-class Parasite Armored Cruisers, 1 Royal Sovereign-class Parasite Battleship and 1 Newport-C logistics vessel. The objective of the raid is a mix of reconnaissance and asset denial.

The presence of the new modular White Tower defense station in orbit over the planet pretty much seals your orbital control.

    -----

You decide to think about what you had learned from Siriwan, although you do send the intelligence about the little toes to the forces on Nowa Warszawa. She strikes you as a dangerous young woman in some ways, but only to her enemies. The question is if you count in that category. By all accounts she has rather impressed the head of the local Shinto shrine, you had met with the priest after and learned that Siriwan evidently had served as a miko at a similar shrine as a girl, while also learning actual Bushido from the monks.

Considering that said priest’s general opinion of Kuritas was that they practiced Bullshit-o rather than Bushido, that is high praise indeed.

Between diplomacy and running the war you are unable to take the time to attend all of the keel laying ceremonies for the new dropship construction, but from the reports it is all going according to budget and time frame, much more smoothly than the last few years had been.

You also miss the celebrations on Griffon IV as the final touches are put on the new artificial oceans, lakes, and rivers. DoME literally moved mountains, dug seabeds, and in general worked their industrious little hearts out to massively transform the landscape of the planet. For the first time in millenia rivers are flowing freely from mountains to the sea. More work is required to make the planet a true garden world, and you will need to decide if it is worth continuing to devote DoME resources to that project. A second round of artificial waterways, oceans, and such would be required if you wish to do so, but in return the planet would be almost as pleasant a place as Griffin’s Roost itself by the conclusion of it all.

A number of factories are upgraded on Griffon IV as well, bringing light/medium mech production up to just short of one and a third regiments a year. Orbital factories are also upgraded, increasing ferro fibrous and double heat sink availability.

The shipyards are expanded on schedule, with the Griffin’s Roost yards starting to look like something that could soon accommodate small warships, while the second jumpship slip around Nowy Gdansk is progressing well. Likewise the new yard orbiting Griffon IV is taking shape nicely. The refit and repair yard is also growing on schedule and will soon be able to accommodate the Morristown, assuming your R&D into the component technologies stays on schedule.

Speaking of research, work on electronics and communications base technologies have been completed, resulting in some significant benefits to related R&D areas.

Turn 58 - Can You Feel The Breath Of The Observer

Combat Report - Operation Bronze Predator

As predicted the operation went relatively smoothly, the defending forces were significantly outmatched by 1st Armored and had no mech forces of their own.

Interestingly, a single brigade of foot infantry managed to hold out against the initial wave of attack through very creative use of urban terrain and improvised anti-armor measures. The commander at the scene held off on a second wave, requesting more in depth orbital recon of the area before proceeding.

It was found that the brigade appeared to be defending an evacuation point for civilians, with over a million Drac civilians packed within the defended zone. As all other objectives were well in hand, the local CO held in place and radioed HQ for instructions.

It took several hours, but after assurances were given to the brigade CO that the civilians would not be summarily massacred, combined with testimony from Drac civilians within the current occupation zone of the same, the Drac brigade commander ordered his forces to stand down. Several ISF agents attempted to cause trouble but were cut down with only minor losses to the surrendering forces.

You do find orders that had been issued by the Dracs to massacre all Polish civilians and Kilburrough-origin slaves, orders which had not been carried out, nor preparations for carrying them out made. The continent’s garrison commander is among the dead, however the brigade CO who surrendered was aware of the orders, and that his direct CO had no intention of carrying them out, relying on endless requests for ‘clarification’ to avoid doing so as long as possible.

It appears that major cracks are appearing within the Drac command.

The continent you are now occupying has a great deal of industry, but it is almost all component-level rather than complete mech or ASF level factories. The local ‘friendly persuaders’ are still resisting in concert with ISF agents. The local Home Army cells are fairly small and scattered, but when debriefed have nothing ill to say about the actual garrison forces, only the internal security forces which were not under military command.

Interestingly, the captured Brigade CO, who is the highest ranked Drac prisoner taken so far, is on a surprisingly friendly first name basis with the local Home Army CO, as they were neighbors, and evidently the Tai-sa was fully aware of his neighbors activities but had never reported him, although he’d also never let slip any classified information.

The information about left small toes proves very useful, about three dozen ISF agents are identified in this manner, although all but a bare handful manage to commit suicide rather than be taken in.

    Operation Cookie Crumbles Combat Report

Friendly Losses - no hull losses, minor damage to HMS Shannon, will require 1 week in the repair yard to repair.

Enemy Losses - 36 Overlord dropships, 3 Monolith jumpships.

Your forces jumped in right on top of a flotilla of Drac Monoliths with a large task force of Overlords about to dock.

The Drac forces transmitted “Glory to the Dragon!” and attacked, but were utterly annihilated before they could close to weapons range. HMS Shannon suffered a serious weapons malfunction in the battle that resulted in damage to her Barracuda launchers, venting the compartment to vacuum prevented a catastrophic magazine explosion at the cost of 3 lives among the crew.

The 3 Monoliths self-destructed rather than surrender. One boarding party was lost in the process, a further 18 deaths.

The system itself was ominously devoid of any communications traffic. The task force probed the system detected massively elevated radiation counts on Atarashi II, closer examination found that the bioweapons facility had been nuked, and the settlements on the planet were suspiciously silent and still.

Wearing full CBW gear, landing parties landed to investigate. What they found was horrendous.

There were no living people on the planet, instead there were dead bodies of Atarashian natives stacked like cordwood, each having rather obviously been killed either by gunfire or swords. Most had been decapitated, and the heads used to spell out a message in the central plazas of the various settlements.

    裏切り者の運命

Or translated, ‘The Fate Of Traitors’. There is evidence of an uprising on the planet, and evidently the Dracs chose to brutally suppress it by massacring everybody before pulling out of a now, to them, useless system.

    -----

You show Siriwan the imagery from Atarashi. Whatever you had expected, the young woman’s horrified expression was satisfying, at least until the moment she lost her lunch, her breakfast, and whatever else was in her stomach as she collapsed and started vomiting.

You feel bad about that, but you had to test her, to see how she would react to such a horror. You’d barely kept from throwing up yourself when you saw the imagery and read the report, only a lifetime of discipline had kept your stomach under control.

You found yourself rather fond of the young woman, even as her attendant, nearly as green-faced as her mistress, attended to her. The Eldest hadn’t yet rendered judgement, but the griffkittens had taken one look at her and decided that she was another addition to the ‘give poor neglected griffkittens lots of scritchies brigade’. Plus both Bastet and Sekhmet seemed to like her, the Eldest just had been too busy to actually meet her, what with his duties in the Imperial Senate wrangling bickering Senators into not screwing things up.

From what you are able to determine, the Atarashi had risen up in revolt in the wake of your earlier attack on the system, a revolt which was concealed from most of the Drac hierarchy while hand-picked forces ‘dealt’ with the situation. Siriwan had absolutely no knowledge of what was going on, and judging by the horror in her expression you are pretty confident that she is telling the full truth there.

You check the logs from the layovers that your forces took in the system en-route to Kilburrough to see if there were any indications of anything going on, and come up blank. The Dracs had obviously kept this situation very much under wraps.

Over a million dead. And judging by the toxins detected, it appears that the Dracs deliberately poisoned the world as they were leaving. All of the orbital infrastructure that had been in the system has been scuttled as well.

You do discover from Siriwan that the ‘actual’ seat of the Dragon is not on Nowa Warszawa, but rather on Okusawa, and that is where her father spends the vast majority of his time. The Otomo forces on Nowa Warszawa are for show, as is the fortress complex. The fortress was built by her grandfather, and her father utterly shunned it as being unbefitting to the Dragon. The planet was primarily used to blood Drac mech forces, as well as additional military production.

According to her, Okusawa has a significant industry of its own, but is primarily one massive fortress, with only those deemed completely loyal to the Dragon allowed to set foot on the planet itself. There would be two orbital shipyards, but none are jumpship capable, the only jumpship yards were on Nowa Warszawa. They had a listed output of 32 Achilles and 12 Overlords a year, with an unknown number of those Overlords being the Kido conversion equipped with subcapital cannons.

As of the latest information she had, the factories in the system can produce one regiment of mixed Atlas and Stalker assault mechs every three years, and two regiments of Jenners a year. She has no information on ASF production numbers.

When you ask her about why she says the Otomo are ‘for show’, she replies that the Otomo forces seen on Nowa Warszawa are not what they seem, and asks if you have any high quality video imagery of them.

You do, thanks to orbital surveillance. So you show it to her, and she watches intently before selecting a brief clip, which she zooms in significantly.

“Watch carefully, the joints of that Atlas,” she says, using a pointer to illustrate what she means. You do so, and you hear a cut off curse over your earpiece from SARAH. She’d missed that, or not recognized the significance.

The ‘armor’ over the joint is flexing too much to be armor.

“The Otomo forces in that fortress are fake, Stinger mechs with frames fitted to them that make them appear to any casual observer to be Atlases. They are piloted by ISF agents, not actual mechwarriors, and exist solely to sell the illusion that the Dragon never leaves the fortress, zealously working at all times for the good of the state.” She explains a bit grimly. “Meanwhile, my father spends his time in the luxuries of his palace on Okusawa, consorting with concubines, and indulging in spilling blood for his own delights.”

She looks at you, regaining her usual stoic poise. “My father is faithful to nothing but his own pleasures and ambitions, Your Imperial Majesty, why would you think he would risk himself on the front line of any conflict? I know that my little brother is in that fortress, but I also know that my father is nowhere near it”

You have a feeling that, based on your discussions with SARAH and your daughter Sarah about the last Kuritan ‘ruler’ named Siriwan, that the young lady in front of you would just love to serve her ‘beloved’ father a nice dish of puffer fish.

    -----

You don’t spend all of your time handling the war. Due to the insurgency on Tarentum the NRI asked you to host the Olympics again. Despite the short notice, Griffin’s Roost has risen to the challenge and meets the deadlines. For the first time there will be three national teams competing and four new events, all proposed by the New Rasalhague Republic.

The Opening Ceremony is a delightful diversion from the stress of the war, filled with music and dance, a celebration of life, of hope, of joy. You quite appreciate it. Siriwan attends as your guest, and you can tell that she is quite fascinated with this, well, alien tradition.

The format has slightly changed, with the schedule shifted around some. All of the track and field events, along with swimming, are held together on the same days in the opening weeks of the games.

In Men’s Athletics, the Rasalhaguians manage a surprising upset, dominating the short and long distance sprints as well as the hurdles, Team Griffon struggles coming out, despite having been favored in the events, as several athletes suffer injuries that require them to withdraw. Competition is nevertheless fierce, but the Rasalhaguian team proves dominant enough to win gold.

The Women’s team, however, redeems Team Griffon’s poor performance on the men’s side with a dominating show of athletic prowess. Across the board, the Griffon women excel at the various events leading to a decisive victory for Team Griffon.

In swimming Team Griffon dominates both the men’s and women’s competition, although the Rasalhaguians come close to snatching the victory away from the women by two tenths of a second.

Team Griffon’s men’s team dominates in the Decathlon, winning 7 out of 10 events outright and coming in a dominating first, however the women’s competition is far tighter. In the end the NRI comes away with a hard fought gold and the Rasalhaguians edge out Team Griffon for silver.

In the Modern Military Pentathlon the Griffon Men are dominant as expected, but the poorly rated NRI women’s team has a truly exceptional performance from one of their members who manages to lift them to the gold.

Turn 58 - Can You Hear The Quanta Calling Back?

You receive an extremely classified report, aside from you only a handful of people have read this.

Atarashi is dead. And thank God that the crews that went down to find out what happened followed the strictest level of CBW safety, because otherwise you would have more dead worlds on your hands.

A particularly horrific bioweapon, obviously released from the now destroyed research facility. According to analysis of samples taken from the CBW suits under strict isolation conditions, this bioweapon is a mixture of an Age of War era Kuritan bioweapon called XCON-73 and a pathogen local to Atarashi that boosted the originals lethality and persistence by several orders of magnitude. Onset time is estimated to be almost a year, making it a strategic weapon of horrific magnitude.

And for all you know, the Dracs may still have samples. That is nightmare fuel, although it is very possible that destroying that Drac convoy may have destroyed any such samples. Luckily nobody had bothered with salvaging any of the Overlords.

You order the wreckage sterilized with nuclear ordnance, on the simple grounds of making damn sure.

More bad news comes from one of the medical institutes working with the freed Kilborough slaves. After significant study they have found that all of the freed slaves had signs of artificial brain damage centered on the same locations in the brain, damage that seemed to render them completely docile. Even the best medical techniques available could only ameliorate further degradation, not reverse the existing damage.

It would be possible for the freed slaves to care for themselves with significant occupational therapy, but they would be an extremely vulnerable population, in that simply telling one to do something in a firm voice would yield instant obedience.

The best long term solution may be to build an O’Neill Cylinder to house the freed slaves, with on-site occupational therapy provided to them, all under strict oversight to ensure that the freed slaves aren’t taken advantage of. Expensive, but may be the best way to handle this.

The Senators from the Griffon II Orbitals have volunteered to have the Cylinder being built there dedicated to this purpose.

    []Accept
    • When the currently under construction O’Neill Cylinder is completed trade the usual bonuses for the following
      • Upkeep - 1,000,000
      • +2 Griffon II Orbitals Economy
      • +1 Griffon II Orbitals Rating Change
      • 1 reroll of failed Griffon II Orbitals Economy rating rolls
      • Prevents certain events
    []Refuse
    • No change

The Imperial Parliament sends you several bills, and it seems that they are trying to be helpful, in their own way. You’re not sure if they are ‘Helping’ or ‘Halping’ sometimes, but still, it seems that ever since you got the corrupt idiots out of there they’ve at least been trying to work with instead of against you.

The first one is a result of extended debate over the situation on Nowa Warszawa. The enormous difficulty being faced in setting up any sort of civilian administration has resulted in both the Chamber of Delegates and the Imperial Senate voting to simply appoint an Imperial Governor and annex the system into the Empire as a whole. Interestingly, the proposal was actually sponsored by one of the second-generation refugees from Nowy Gdansk, and appears to be rather popular among that population.

They recognize that you do not yet fully control the planet, but the argument being made is that it is better to get in front of the challenges of long term rule than have to play catch up, and the locals are proving to be utterly incapable of governing themselves without dueling atrocities.

    []Agree to Parliament plan
    • Annexes Nowa Warszawa into the Griffon Empire
    • Triggers a decision on who to appoint as Imperial Governor
    • 10,000,000 upfront cost, 2,000,000 upkeep
    []Veto Parliament plan
    • -5 support Imperial Senate
    • -5 support Chamber of Delegates

The second has to do with Calliope, specifically Calliope IV. Parliament would like to hold a referendum on that planet on annexation into the Empire, with a package of incentives and a planned timeline for them becoming fully part of the Empire.

The main concern is that this might be jumping the gun a bit. The latest report shows that you are quite popular on Calliope IV, and there is majority support for such a move, but a very large minority is strongly against being annexed, which could cause trouble. The efforts that you are making, while slower than the Parliament’s plan, are within a few years of bearing fruit, so it may be wiser to wait until later.

    []Hold the referendum
    • Calliope IV joins the Griffon Empire
    • Opens up decision trees related to this
    • Current ongoing actions ‘Promote Calliope IV Integration’ and ‘Begin Legal Review of Possible Calliope IV Integration’ are cancelled
    • 10,000,000 upfront cost, 2,000,000 upkeep
[]Wait until the time is ripe
    • No change

    Nowa Warszawa

The success of the latest offensive, and the news about the false Otomo, has led to an acceleration of the time table for securing the planet.

There are three competing plans on the table.

The first, Operation Black Champion, is a focused strike, aiming to take the main fortified ‘palace’ via direct orbital drop in hopes of securing Siriwan’s little brother and breaking the back of the enemy defenses in a single blow. Both Pathfinder regiments would execute an orbital drop directly on the palace, attempting to suppress enemy air defenses and allowing the main assault force to land safely.

Forces committed to this assault would be as follows.
    • Initial Drop
      • Pathfinder regiments will make orbital drops, special operations regiments would make use of stealth to strike on the ground
        • 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division
          • 1st Pathfinder Regiment
          • 1st Special Operations Regiment
        • 1st Brigade, 2nd Armored Division
          • 1st Pathfinder Regiment
          • 1st Special Operations Regiment
    • Main Assault
      • Once the fortifications air defenses are suppressed, these forces will be landed via Newport dropship.
        • 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division
        • 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division
        • 5th Brigade, 1st Armored Division
        • 5th Brigade, 2nd Armored Division
    • Enemy Force Evaluation
      • 1 ‘Otomo’ Regiment of converted Stinger light mechs piloted by non-Mechwarriors
      • 2 training regiments of light mechs, a mix of Wasp and Stinger
      • 1 regiment of AFV
      • 4 infantry regiments
      • Fortress turrets (29% destroyed)
The other two plans are more methodical. Operation Tarzan would strike at the next most lightly defended continent, which has only a trio of AFV regiments, a training battalion of Mechs, and approximately 10 regiments worth of foot infantry. While Operation Harlequin is a more conventional assault on the main continent, making use of dispersed landing sites in order to minimize the threat of the central fortress then placing it under siege.

    []Approve Operation Black Champion
    []Approve Operation Tarzan
    []Approve Operation Harlequin
    []Hold in place for now

Turn 58 - The Arguments of Motivation

    Olympics Special

The gymnastics competitions have come, and it is very obvious that the NRI is smarting from how close you’d gotten in past competitions, especially in women’s gymnastics. The Romans come away with all three gold medals, however it is a testament to how solid your women’s program has become that they manage a competitive silver medal, and and while you are forced to settle for Bronze in the men’s event, this is more because the Rasalhaguian team had a prodigy than any lack of effort, it is play there that in terms of raw talent you matched the Romans, they just had a far deeper team with far more training.

In the team event you are neck and neck right up to the end, with the Romans still coming away with gold, but your team manages to make them work hard for it. All in all a rather impressive program in something that is clearly the Roman specialty.

The Romans and Rasalhaguians split the shooting events, including several upsets in the men’s pistols competition. All of the events are very close, with no single event decided by more than 2 points across multiple rounds. You walk away with the Silver for each.

Then comes a quartet of team sports events that have been running since the beginning of the Olympics but come to a conclusion near the middle. All had been added at the request of the Rasalhaguians, as was their right under the Olympic charter. To be fair, while they were last minute additions, this was mostly because of a mix up in communications due to the venue change from Nova Roma to Griffin’s Roost.

Your men’s soccer team puts on a truly abysmal performance, not managing to score a single goal at any point in the tournament. To be fair, the small professional league had rejected requests to make their best players available for the games, on the grounds of insufficient notice and that they were contractually obligated to their current schedule, making it impossible for players to play for Team Griffon.

The women’s soccer team manages to eke out a single win against the Romans in a 1-0 match, and managed to ‘only’ lose by a score of 5-0 to the Rasalhaguian women, while the Romans lost 8-0 to the same dominant squad.

In baseball the same problem arose. Although baseball is a fairly popular sport locally, the request to send players came in at an awkward time and none of the top talent on the planet was available for Team Griffon. A mix of minor leaguers and amateur players made up your team, and they managed to scrape together a silver after a scrappy victory against the Romans and holding the Rasalhaguians to ‘only’ 5 runs.

In softball it was a different story. Team Rasalhague was clearly the better squad on paper, and showed their dominance in a crushing defeat of the Romans, but Team Griffon was a Cinderella story. Not a single professional player on the squad, a pitcher whose ‘day job’ was as a nurse at a local hospital, a shortstop who was still in High School, and a Right Fielder who hadn’t yet started High School.

They first played the Romans, and won in a 3-2 game that came down to a walkoff run in the 12th inning.

Then they faced the Rasalhaguian powerhouse. Every single player on Team Rasalhague was a professional, every single one was the best they had at their position. Their pitcher in the last 3 seasons in the NRR’s professional league had the lowest ERA in that league’s history.

The first inning was a disaster for Team Griffon, 3 runs for the Rasalhaguians, and then the most dominating fast-pitch softball pitcher in their history stepped up to the mound.

And on her very first pitch, an 8th grade kid smacked the ball right out of the park over the center field wall. The next batter struck out swinging, but the third drew a walk. Then the clean up hitter did just that and hit the second home run of the bottom of the inning, tying the game at 3.

That set the tone for the game. The Rasalhaguians would get a lead, but Team Griffon would claw it back time and time again. By the 14th inning it was a 13-13 tie. By tournament rules the 15th inning would be the end of the game, even if the game was still tied. And on run differential the Rasalhaguians would walk away with the gold thanks to their shellacking of the Romans.

In the top of the 15th, the Rasalhagians were retired 1-2-3. The first batter for Team Griffon was hit by pitch, the second struck out looking. The third managed a single. The fourth then popped out. The pitcher was up next, and she’d struck out at every single at bat that game.

She didn’t this time, managing to send the ball into the gap for a single, loading up the bases.

The 8th grader stepped up to the plate. Aside from the initial home run, she had four RBIs and had pulled off one of the most difficult plays in the sport, stealing 1st base on a dropped strike, stealing 2nd, stealing 3rd, then managing to steal home on a wild pitch.

The Rasalhaguian closer was one of the best closers in the sport. First pitch was on the inside corner, strike one. Second pitch was well outside, but the umpire gave the Rasalhaguian team a gift and called it a strike, leading to loud protests from the Griffon dugout that led to the Griffon team manager being ejected.

The third pitch was way inside, almost hitting the batter who managed to barely get out of the way in time.

Then on the fourth pitch, a perfect heater served up low and down the middle. And it was fouled off. Fifth pitch, fouled off. Sixth pitch, ball three. Seventh pitch, fouled off. Eighth pitch, foul ball. Ninth pitch, foul ball.

Then the tenth pitch… and with a resounding crack the ball left the ballpark, smashing into the parking lot and breaking a windshield in the process. A grand slam home run. 17-13, Team Griffon.

You are pretty certain that you screamed yourself hoarse. You are absolutely certain that the volume of celebration in that ballpark that night was truly epic.

Team Griffon had won the gold in softball.

    Operation Black Champion Combat Report

Friendly Losses - 2 Pathfinder Regiments effectively destroyed
Enemy Losses - All organized ISF forces destroyed, all non-ISF Drac forces surrendered

The operation began catastrophically as both Pathfinder regiments deviated from the operational planning. Rather than landing at the planned LZ and securing it as intended, they evidently decided that the old phrase ‘You Only Live Once’ was wonderful tactical advice and tried to carry the entire day on their own by shifting their LZ from the planned site right at the edge of the Palace’s defense envelope to right in the middle of the most intact defensive works.

As a consequence they were utterly mauled by the fixed defenses, with many of the light and medium mechs shot out of the sky before they could even land.

The Special Forces Regiments, seeing this catastrophe in the making, held off their initial runs.

However, Jeremy grimly held to the plan, despite the failure of the Pathfinder regiments to follow it, and authorized the main landing force to land.

At that point, the ersatz Otomo regiment charged the landing zone, and promptly got mulched into shattered metal and mangled pilots in the process as they faced real Assault mechs. The Assault Regiments led the way, forming a solid wedge of assault-weight metal grinding into the face of the palace defenses, and crushed their way through. Weapons that would be lethal when concentrated on light and medium designs were shrugged off by the titans, and turret after turret exploded under concentrated fire.

Fighting still raged inside the palace even as the assault ground forward, a few isolated surviving mechs from the Pathfinder regiments fighting against ISF infantry.

The fortress fell, the last turret going dark. The two training regiments of Stingers that were still in the field promptly powered off as the last Otomo mech detonated spectacularly. They’d been keeping their range, staying technically engaged, but not closing enough to be targeted, until that point. It looked like neither the instructors nor the cadets had any interest in dying for the Dragon today.

Nor, it seemed, did any other surviving forces on the planet. The fall of the central fortress prompted Drac units on the remaining continents to signal their surrender, usually after vicious infighting against ISF commissars and minders.

One good thing came from the Pathfinder’s suicidal aggression, a single Wolf Spider from 2nd Armored had landed in a garden near the very center of the fortress. The pilot, a young Lieutenant and recent honor graduate from the Aerie, cut off his jump jets and let the well designed quad mech absorb the last twenty meters or so of the drop, which turned out to be the best decision. Each foot of the quad mech crushed a single ISF agent, while a young boy was directly beneath the mech and was completely unharmed, apart from being tumbled to the ground by the impact.

The battle armored troopers attached to the Mech secured the garden, and the boy turned out to be Yoshiro Kurita, younger brother of Siriwan, who confirmed that the ISF agents present had been about to execute him due to the assault. His nurse was already dead, as was his chief tutor, they were saving him for last.

The pilot had the good sense to have the boy loaded into the jump seat in his cockpit and then they hunkered down in the garden, holding the single entrance against large numbers of ISF infantry who tried to fight their way inside.

Nowa Warszawa was in your hands, as was Siriwan’s brother.

Despite the Pathfinder’s impetuosity, the day was yours. Victory for Griffon.

    -----

The decision to annex Nowa Warszawa arrives just days after the final surrender of Drac forces. This has several effects. For one thing, both the Home Army and the local Drac civilians are less than enthused by the plan, but it has distracted them from trying to massacre each other by giving them both cause to glare at you, and be intimidated from engaging in violence by the fact that your forces are glaring back at them with Very Big Guns And Scary Mechs.

For the first time since you’ve landed, you have more than one consecutive day without deadly riots on the planet. Plus there are now voices who are agreeing that given everything this is probably a good idea. The radicals in both camps don’t seem to like that, but don’t seem willing to draw your ire at the moment.

The move does catch your administration a bit flat-footed. Your various ministries are scrambling a bit to catch up.

First thing, you’ll need to decide who to appoint as temporary military governor of the planet, until a civil administration can be set up.

    []Jeremy Griffith
    []Thanh Griffith
    []Hamid al-Aziz
[]Some poor Civil Affairs senior officer who’s qualified for the job but isn’t already named

You do get distracted from this by the ongoing Olympics, at least a little.

Men’s Wrestling is surprisingly close, with the difference between Gold and Bronze being 2 whole points. Unfortunately Team Griffon got the Bronze and the Roman’s the Gold, but it was still a rather impressive performance from everybody involved.

Women’s Wrestling isn’t as close, with the Roman’s dominating every weight class. Team Griffon has several unlucky injuries early in the competition and winds up a distant third.

In Men’s Fencing, Team Griffon is utterly dominant from first to last, indeed by the second round the only question remaining was who would take silver as Team Griffon had built up such a lead that they could forfeit the remaining matches and still take Gold. The Rasalhaguians wound up with the Silver medal.

Women’s Fencing was a show of skill and is the closest of any competition so far in the games. In the end, the Rasalhaguians take away the Gold by a single touch, and the Romans get the silver due to winning by priority, which was effectively a random coin flip as no touches were scored in the overtime of the deciding tied match.

Men’s Archery is somewhat of a Roman/Rasalhaguian two-way battle, with Team Griffon being completely outclassed, while Women’s Archery was much the same at first, although Team Griffon was eventually able to eke out a silver on the strength of some superb shooting by the final archer.

And now, you can’t avoid it any longer, it is budget time. Sigh….

General Stewart leads things off. “Your Majesty, with the collapse of Drac forces on Nowa Warszawa, as well as the decision to incorporate the planet into the Empire, we are going to need to establish a proper garrison force for the planet, complete with local recruiting and training facilities. This will pave the way for a future expansion of the Aerie, if such is desired. There are a large number of salvaged mechs, two entire regiment’s worth of Stinger light mechs, for example, that are easily repaired, although they are functionally useless to us. There is some consideration to giving these to the Home Army to form the nucleus of a future garrison force, but there are concerns that this may lead to radical elements within the Home Army using them against non-Polish civilian populations on the planet. We’ve already had to secure previous mechs given to the Home Army due to attempted attacks by radicals in their ranks. For now we are keeping these machines in depots for future disposal, either to a militia or to scrap.”

She checks her notes. “Your son did report the capture of two specific Mechs, however. One is not in SARAH’s Star League database, being what appears to be a hybrid between an Atlas II and a standard Atlas, and appears to have been the personal mech of the original Dragon. The other is a Royal Stalker, and appears to have been the personal mech of Siriwan Kurita’s mother. Both machines are being shipped here on the next transport.”

“Beyond that, we have captured extensive military factory infrastructure on Nowa Warszawa, including sufficient Light/Medium mech production capacity to produce an entire regiment a year, once retooled to our specifications, as well as 3 additional ASF wings worth or production, likewise once retooled.” she reports with evident satisfaction. “This does not mean that we should slack on our own factory expansion, plus we will need to continue to boost all of our strategic production, but especially endo-steel given how ubiquitous it is in our Mech designs.”

She checks some notes. “I’ll be handling the ground procurement brief this year as well. Your Majesty, we functionally lost both Pathfinder regiments, primarily due to the commanders of said regiments disregarding orders and acting in a highly reckless manner that led to severe losses of men and machines. We recommend that the surviving senior officers who made that decision be court-martialed and cashiered from service. But this leads to us needing to rebuild our LZ securing assets. As such, we are recommending the procurement of 1 Pathfinder Regiment, to be assigned to 1st Armored Division. We also recommend procuring 3 Standard Mech Regiments, 2 to be assigned to 4th Brigade, 1st Armored, and 1 to 2nd Brigade, 2nd Armored. Finally we recommend procuring 2 Armored Regiments, 2 Mechanized Regiments, and 1 CAS Regiment. One Armored Regiment and 2 Mechanized Regiments will be assigned to the 4th Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division, while 1 Armored Regiment will be assigned to 1st Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division and the CAS regiment to 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division.”

General Reyes then steps up and fires up her Powerpoints. “Your Majesty, we would like to procure a second Planetary Defense Wing to station on Nowa Warszawa, while also continuing procurement of Carrier Wings for the Silver Tower stations. We are also proposing procuring a Planetary Defense Wing for Calliope IV to boost local defenses as well.”

Well, that was rather short, a single short statement with only three powerpoint slides to deal with.

Admiral Benjamin is on crutches for some reason that he hasn’t seen fit to admit to you. “Your Majesty, we’ve got 21 large and 1 regular Dropship slip available to us this year for new construction. My brilliant staff has come up with the following recommendations.”
    • Large Dropships (21)
      • None
    • Regular Dropships (1)
      • None
“Now this may seem strange, but there is a method to our madness, Your Majesty. Starting next year, we intend to split our production slips into A and B groups, with them alternating each year, this way we will have a steady stream of new dropships coming off the line, rather than having to deal with python lumps of ships which has been straining our manning capabilities even with the improved projections from the new training vessels. The Aerie can only graduate so many officers a year, Your Majesty, and our prior pattern was seeing very inconsistent demand, leading to serious scheduling difficulties.”

“On the other hand.” he grins wickedly, “We would like to order a truly epic number of PPG-01’s this year, to be distributed amongst the Silver and White Towers. My wife assures me that we’ll be able to man the lot of them, especially if she doesn’t need to fill up crews for everything else.”

Bridget is looking a bit harried, but in a cheerful way. “Your Majesty, DoME would like to send a team to Nowa Warszawa to do a full environmental survey, we already have quite a bit of good data but they want to see things for themselves before making recommendations for amelioration. In addition, the teams that had been working on the various water related projects on Griffon IV are ready to continue at your word. We have organized teams to procure and install modern machine tools and such on the newly captured factories on Nowa Warszawa, which will allow us to make use of them in our own production. In addition, we are recommending that we begin building strategic materials production, space infrastructure, and possibly a new orbital yard in Nowa Warszawa orbit.”

Isoroku is extremely busy with the Olympics, although he does send a progress report on Calliope IV that shows that progress is being made there.

Jake is looking a little grim. “Your Majesty, a military government on Nowa Warszawa is fine as a short-term solution, but we really need to start moving towards a civilian administration, even one run from here. We have tiger teams ready to go into action in that regard, as we’ve been planning this internally for some time, but we need your authorization and sufficient budget for the purpose.”

Mary didn’t bring her normal remote. “Your Majesty, we’ve not got anything new for you, but we have teams ready to begin work. We recommend starting research on Orbital Infrastructure and Improved Agriculture so we have plenty of capacity next year in case anything new pops up.”

Harry is looking exhausted. “Your Majesty, two things. One, the expanded POW camps are, thankfully, almost ready, just in time it seems, and two we can expand our current COINTEL methods and assets to Nowa Warszawa, which should hopefully help us deal with any radical elements among any of the groups there, as well as root out any remaining ISF and Drac loyalists.”

Janet is also looking exhausted. “Your Majesty, Parliament threw us a curveball, forcing us to move up our timeline. I’ve got teams ready to move in to start establishing a Griffon style legal system on Nowa Warszawa, informed by our experience on Nowy Gdansk. We can get the basics set up very quickly, but will take time to do anything more in depth.”

    Olympics [200,000]

    -----

In many ways the next part of the Olympics is your favorite, along with most people on Griffin’s Roost. Especially judging by the massive turnout. It’s not unusual for top level motorsports races in the Empire to have in person attendance numbers over 100k, with hundreds of millions watching from home.

And these Olympics are no different.

There is a complication, though. The Rasalhaguians, outside of some specialty off-road motorcycle racing, have almost no motorsports at all. And even motorcycle racing is more of an offshoot of military training and less of a ‘sport’. Horseback racing? They’d be great at that, but increase horsepower over a single hay-burning equine?

There hadn’t been enough time to fully address that, but the twins were determined to spread the Good News Of Motorsport to the heathens. Sometimes the twins were still 11 years old, even in their 40s. Regardless, they had organized training with several professional teams for those Rasalhaguians brave enough to put on a fire suit and get behind the wheel. Equipment was provided by those same teams, as were pit crews, spotters, and crew chiefs.

It didn’t help them win any races, Team Griffon was utterly dominant on the track, but it did keep them from completely embarrassing themselves, and hopefully the experience would ignite some interest in motorsport back in the NRR.

The final events are the marathons, and they are near perfect mirrors of each other. In the men’s marathon, Team Griffon easily sets the pace and crushes the competition, while the Rasalhaguian runners suffer a litany of woes that are almost comical in their sheer strange circumstances. For part of the race a Rasalhaguian was even leading, until the poor sap caught the attention of a near-gull who decided that something about him was offensive and only enthusiastic beating with its wings would suffice. Their next best runner somehow managed to be the only runner in the entire field to encounter a swarm of bees, took sixteen stings, and had to be taken to the hospital. Runners that were right next to the poor sap weren’t even bothered by the insects. In fact, all of the Rasalhague runners seemed to attract insects and birds in unusual quantities.

Post-race investigation reveals a rather amusing coincidence. The particular brand of laundry soap that the Rasalhaguians had brought from home turns out to act as an attractant to local insect life.

The women’s race, meanwhile, is almost the opposite. The leader until the final two miles was from Team Griffon, but at a point where the marathon course swung near the corner of a nature preserve a wild Castor Wolf pup that had been separated from her pack wound up on the course and decided that said runner looked like a fun playmate. Castor Wolves are known for being extremely docile towards humans, even in the wild, and there have been no documented instances of Castor Wolves actually attacking humans without significant and severe provocation. In this case, the pup decided to gambol along with the running woman, and the two got tripped up together and she went down, leading to her getting a face bath from a happily playing pup.

Unfortunately she hurt her ankle in the fall and couldn’t continue, and Team Griffon had to settle for a bronze, while the Rasalhaguian runner finished first. The pup is back with her pack, after a rather adorable ‘telling off’ by her dam that was caught on video. The image of a pouting pup being carried back into the preserve by an adult Castor Wolf by the scruff of her neck is pure adorableness.

News of the liberation of Nowa Warszawa causes an enormous surge of celebrations and parties throughout the system, especially on Nowa Gdansk among the Polish population. There is a sense that the war isn’t over, but that it is well begun and that you have struck back effectively.

You get word from Nowa Warszawa that they have found a fourth Mech factory buried underneath a mountain on the main continent, oddly enough it had been mothballed decades ago and appeared to have once made Phoenix Hawk mechs, but no mechs of that type have ever been seen in Drac service.

You do have the captured Royal Atlas and Royal Stalker brought to Griffin’s Roost, so that you can decide what to do with them.

A massive report is delivered to you from Nowa Warszawa from the DoME team you'd sent to do an initial survey of the planet.

In a word, the situation is… horrific. There are absolutely no pollution controls on any of the industrial equipment on the planet, no consideration given whatsoever to clean air, water, or anything else, and the place is becoming horribly polluted. Air pollution levels are just barely below ‘unbreathable’ and asthma is a serious medical problem on the planet. Water? You need to boil it at minimum, and in general your forces have been relying on the water distillation and purification systems built into your dropships for potable water. Some of the rivers are so badly polluted by effluent that it is a miracle that they aren’t on fire… wait, some of them have been on fire.

Crop yields are ridiculously low, the planet is barely able to support itself, and in general is in extremely rough shape.

On the positive side, the teams installing updated tooling on the Mech and ASF factories have also installed modern pollution controls, so there is that at least. But none of the supporting industry has any of that.

According to DoME, just to fully refit all of the industry on the planet properly won’t be enough, it’ll stop the bleeding, but the damage is so bad at this point as to be self-sustaining. They recommend approaching this as a terraforming project, because in many ways it will be.

They are compiling their final report for you, which you will have plenty of time to make decisions next year as to funding and allocation of DoME teams, but it looks like the three teams you’ll have available might be very busy over on Nowa Warszawa for some time.

You also receive a report from the teams that Janet has sent over, and it makes for grim reading. The local ‘law enforcement’ forces are less than useless, the local court system is an utter joke and farce, the prisons are pretty much filled with political prisoners while actual criminals are, so long as they were politically convenient to the Dragon, allowed to run free.

The advisors and trainers sent over have recommended scrapping the entire corrupt mess, discharging all of those involved in it, and starting over from the bottom up. The addendum from Special Branch recommends simply shooting every single judge, prosecutor, public defender, prison guard, and ‘friendly persuader’ on the planet out of sheer principle, then shooting them again in case their sheer corruption causes them to survive without a functioning brain, then setting them on fire just to make sure.

Evidently the justice system worked on the principle of ‘everybody is guilty’ as the starting basis, and the only job of law enforcement was to ensure that they arrested a sufficient number of people each week to look like they were doing something. Whether or not a crime had even been committed didn’t matter, they’d just grab the first person they saw when they were in the mood to arrest somebody, and if the ‘friendly persuader’ was male and that person happened to be female, well, a man has needs, and ‘punishing’ an offender is totally alright, or vice versa, or in any way that floated any particular ‘friendly persuader’s boat.

The Justice Department is requesting a massive draft of law enforcement professionals to actually make a dent into the situation and hopefully kickstart an actually ethical and proper justice system, they are also requesting permission to completely purge the local system from the ground up. Mass executions are optional, but strongly recommended as, according to the files, they have plenty of evidence of gross abuses of the civilian population by these people.

It should be noted, that the recommendation is for each of the accused to be given a proper trial by a non-corrupt judicial system before any punishment is levied, capital or not.

    []Follow the main recommendations
    • -1% POP growth on Griffin’s Roost
    • -1% tax rate next turn
    • +5 Rating Change - Nowa Warszawa
    • Prevents certain events
[]Her Majesty is Not Amused, follow the optional recommendation
    • As above
    • -5 Politics
    • +1% GDP Nowa Warszawa
    • +5 approval on Nowa Warszawa
    • -250,000 population on Nowa Warszawa
[]We’ll need to grit our teeth and be patient, it’ll work out in the end
    • Unknown Effects

You receive reports also from your son, who you’ve decided to saddle with being acting Military Governor until such time as a permanent civilian governor is selected. The Home Army has, in the main, come in out of the cold. The radical elements have been shuffled aside to areas where their violent tendencies will not be a problem, while the rest are forming up into a proper planetary militia. He has also started combing through the POWs, using Intelligence assets to filter out those who are actually loyal to the Dragon and those who had been drafted at gunpoint into the Dragon’s service.

With the tooling on the planet and the number of willing recruits he’s been able to put together a Green quality Light Garrison Force. He’s having his MPs and civil affairs people coordinate with the people from Justice to use them as temporary police forces until something permanent can be arranged.

He has reported that a non-military administration has been established, albeit one manned primarily by people from the Griffon system. Security sweeps are ongoing, with a major feature there being that the locals are amazed at how… hands off and concerned with due process, privacy, and human rights your counterintelligence people are. The new orbital yard and factory have been built, and he reports that the decision was made to make the first segment support a single Large Dropship slip; future slips will be dedicated to regular dropships.

Closer to home, the new O’Neill Cylinder has been completed and is now dedicated to housing and rehabilitating freed slaves from Kilburrough. In addition Endo Steel production is up significantly thanks to the series of upgrades to the orbital foundries producing the same, while the local yards have all been expanded. Future Jumpships built at your two main yards will take less time to build now. However, the 2 Caravels currently on the ways will not benefit from this, they will complete next year on schedule.

The Arcology Cluster on Griffon IV has been opened to the public and has proven a great success. In fact, the architects behind the design have won several awards for the beauty of the design combined with the great practicality of it.

Unfortunately focusing development on the Inner Asteroid Belt has run into a snag, right before you made the decision to do precisely that the head of that particular office in the Interior Department had taken sick leave, his deputy had been involved in an accident that took her out of the office for most of the year, and the remaining staff were unable to coordinate well enough without any experienced senior leadership.

The three mech factories have been upgraded, increasing your light/medium mech production capacity significantly.

There was one major issue, a software update was issued to a particular model of precision robotic welding equipment, used in aerospace applications, primarily for high-stress lightweight structures. Unfortunately that software update, while overall quite useful in terms of fixing minor bugs and slightly improving performance, turned out to be a minor catastrophe for Peregrine fighter production, as the update exposed an existing minor bug buried in the control programs for manufacturing structural members for that type of ASF, a bug which had, ironically, been masked by an opposite bug in the main system software. As a result of the need to debug and update those systems and files, production for new Carrier Wings will be delayed until Q1 next year.

The new Planetary Defense Wing for Calliope IV is completed, manned, and dispatched to Calliope IV to great fanfare from the locals by all reports.

Other than that, procurement goes very smoothly. You do visit the new Silver Tower orbital fortress above Griffin’s Roost in person, and it is terrifyingly lethal.

On the research front, R&D into basic HPG installations has hit a minor snag following a coolant leak on the test bed system, repairs will take a few months but they expect to validate the design by Q2 next year.

Work on advanced agricultural techniques has run into an amusing snag… the test farm suffered a security breach when the Department of Periphery Studies decided to use it as their latest ‘project’, and paperwork errors allowed the tenured professionals at Periphery Studies to get inside, where they proceeded to ‘improve’ things. Actual R&D work will be delayed until Q1 of next year.

Work on improving orbital infrastructure had a minor breakthrough, completing on time and slightly below budget, giving Mary at least something positive to report.

The first sign of trouble comes when there is a massive blast in the NRI Embassy in Griffsport, blowing out windows and shattering part of the building. By the time emergency responders arrive there is a gunfight going on between members of the embassy's security staff. Minutes later comes word of blasts at a number of hotels where members of the NRI Olympic Team had been staying, followed by more reports of violence.

Griffsport PD and the Imperial Grifftiger Mounted Police secure the situation, there are over a hundred dead, three times that many wounded. The NRI Ambassador is in critical condition, his wife is dead.

It takes a while, but eventually some clarity is obtained. The military attache, elements of the security forces, and several ‘tourists’ were evidently members of something called Pugnus Deorum, or ‘The Fist Of The Gods’. The few survivors from the attackers that you have in custody are so far refusing to speak beyond cursing you and the NRI government as ‘Godless Cowards’ who will ‘Die in the Fire of the Gods!’.

There were a number of minor attacks from individual NRI ‘tourists’ over the next several days, but the IGMP had been marking all of them and were able to react before anything serious happened. Most of the attacks consist of fire bombs thrown at churches, temples, monasteries, and other religious institutions.

A week later, however, things got worse. Your embassy on Nova Roma has been overrun as the planet is convulsed in a massive revolt by this Pugnus Deorum, all reports indicate that the Consuls and Senate of the NRI have been overthrown. Your embassy staff is currently being held hostage by the revolutionaries.

Further reports come from Tarentum, an attempted uprising there by the Pugnus Deorum appears to have been coordinated with a surge of attacks by the Drac-sponsored rebels. 1st Infantry and the 1st RRF had the situation well in hand, successfully suppressing the uprising although this did require some vicious fighting with NRI turncoat forces. They are requesting urgent reinforcements, especially of ASF and Naval forces, but report that they expect to be able to hold indefinitely. The local Pugnus Deorum forces appear to have been annihilated, and the coordinated offensive by the Dracs pet rebels resulted in them being systematically crushed. The local NRI commanders have placed themselves under the authority of General Skillins, the CO of the 1st ID.

NRI naval forces appear to be paralyzed, according to reports, with indications of some skirmishing going on. It is unknown how long this situation will last. That very paralysis and infighting has led your analysts to conclude that the revolutionaries failed to get their hands on as many naval assets as they’d planned. Thanks to this infighting the Jumpship that brought word of the coup was able to escape.

More information comes out. Pugnus Deorum is a group that had been thought to have been eliminated over a century ago, but evidently just went underground. They are neo-Pagans, worshipping the ancient Roman Gods, which would normally have been all well and good, but they also believed that anybody who didn’t worship the same way that they did were enemies of the Gods, especially any Christians. They’d been suppressed back then when they attempted to lead pograms against those who disagreed with them, and the Consul at the time, despite being a worshipper of the old Roman gods himself, had decisively crushed them.

Analysis of the explosives used in the attacks on the embassy show them to be of Drac origin, it looks like the Pugnus Deorum may have been the second string in the Dracs' bow for destabilizing and taking out the NRI. Contact tracing shows that all of it had evidently arrived in a diplomatic shipment for the now-deceased military attache and that all of the ‘tourist’ attackers had visited his office at some point before they made their attacks, obviously to pick up the bombs.

Under questioning a few of the prisoners talk and your daughter Sarah cannot decide between laughing and crying. Their understanding of actual Roman religion is… not even wrong, wrong would be an improvement. Literally all they get right is names and general ‘area of interest’ but beyond that? They get damn near everything else so wrong that it is offensive to her historians soul.

Needless to say, you have a serious situation on your hands. It doesn’t help that, economically, a number of companies which had invested heavily in partnerships with the NRI, or in trade with the NRI, are suddenly facing serious headwinds, causing several investment indices to fall precipitously, which in turn triggers local economic contractions and mass layoffs. Your social safety net is well able to absorb the blow, and nobody will be in any long term distress over this even if laid off, but economic growth is… impacted badly this year.

There is better news as well, so not all is doom and gloom. Your granddaughter Lisa has been seen engaging in lewd handholding and inappropriate games of footsie with a certain Siriwan Kurita.

On the one hand, Empress Jacqueline Griffith, First of Her Name, is rather worried, you’d read the historical data about the War of the Davion Succession and really could go without this sort of complication. Granted, Lisa is Sarah’s middle daughter, so not all that close to the throne, but there is always the concern for the future.

On the other hand, ba likes, ba likes a lot. Two words… Great Grandbabies. Plus you’ve come to rather approve of young Siriwan, she strikes you as a quite sensible young woman with her head quite firmly screwed on straight, and one who seems to have the virtues of the ancient samurai without the vices of their more modern descendants.

And the Eldest has finally given Siriwan the Lick of Approval, there is that as well

Finally, Jeremy has sent back from Nowa Warszawa some reports that indicate that things have settled down to a simmer. He is requesting approval to procure dedicated police vehicles for the planet, on the grounds that the current equipment is associated too closely with the Civilian Guidance Corps and he wants to ensure a clean break.

So you decide to let out an RFP, and almost instantly regret it when you see one of the proposals to be sent to Jeremy for evaluation.

Somehow that company obsessed with Pyramids has managed to build a Pyramidal police car. Complete with enclosing the rotating police flasher inside a shiny pyramidal cap at the ‘top’ of the pyramid, and texturing the exterior to look like stone.

Oh well, you send all of them on regardless.

Your naval staff has prepared a plan for you to help handle the NRI situation. Operation Blue Cougar has multiple parts. First, reinforce your forces on Tarentum in order to secure the situation there, then determine what is going on on Nova Roma and Ravenna. To that end four Monoliths will be involved.

These will be divided into three formations. All will initially jump to Tarentum and from there proceed to their ultimate targets.
    • Task Force Blue Cougar.1
      • 1 Monolith dedicated
        • 8 Bainbridge class PDD
        • 1 Newport-C class logistics vessel
      • Will secure Tarentum
    • Task Force Blue Cougar.2
      • 1 Monolith dedicated
        • 4 Shannon class PCA
        • 4 Bainbridge class PDD
        • 1 Newport-C class logistics vessel
      • Will recointer Ravenna and provide support to any remaining loyalists
    • Task Force Blue Cougar.3
      • 2 Monolith dedicated
        • 8 Bainbridge class PDD
        • 8 Shannon class PCA
        • 2 Newport-C class logistics vessels
      • Will survey Nova Roma and provide support to any loyalists remaining
    []Approve Operation Blue Cougar
    []Deny Operation Blue Cougar

You receive reports from Nowa Warszawa that the situation there is continuing to slowly cool off. Current efforts are focused on keeping the radicals on all sides from causing trouble, while training up a new police force and justice system from the ground up. The main procurement for new police vehicles goes to the Gendarme line, as they have the most distinction from previous policing equipment as well as fitting the required specifications. Some small orders for the Cascade as a fast response and the QUE-N for heavy response are also made, and even a few of the dratted pyramids are purchased for when police need to wade into the middle of a crowd and disperse it from there.

There is a bit of drama when a single Tramp loaded with 3 Mules which had been converted into slave transports jumps into Nowa Warszawa. This, evidently, is the semi-annual delivery of fresh ‘product’ from Kilburrough to Nowa Warszawa, and the slaver’s are quite upset at your daughter’s rather brisk response to their ‘just doing business’ attitude by sending Marine boarding parties on board and securing all four vessels, the Mules and the Tramp.

From her report, you get the sense that she was most upset when the slavers thought that offering her the ‘merchandise’ at a discount would allow them to get away.

Thanh did discover one other thing, about three dozen female slaves that were evidently a ‘special order’ for the former garrison commander of the planet, none were even in their teens yet according to medical examinations. Her first thought that they were meant for, well, nefarious sexual purposes is incorrect. In the cargo manifest they are listed as ‘Assassin Trainees’ loyal to whoever held a control rod linked to cybernetic implants.

Initial investigation shows that the girls are not brain damaged, like the usual, and according to the manifest, at least, are intended as infiltration assets able to move among ‘unenlightened’ populations, always mindful that any attempt at disloyalty would be detected by the tiny implants which would detonate, killing them instantly. Fortunately none of the control rods had been activated and the medics who examined the girls report that it should be fairly trivial to remove the implants themselves.

Of course, this only means that you now have a cadre of girls who have been brutally trained to be sociopathic killers kept in line solely by fear of their heads exploding. Lovely.

In news closer to home, the economic downtick is confirmed to be relatively minor, although still annoying. You have been very fortunate to avoid much economic volatility, but it looks like the markets have decided to shift from constant growth to a more volatile phase. It was nice while it lasted, you guess, but no growth period lasts forever.

The Royal Grifftiger Mounted Police have completed their sweeps of NRI citizens, you caught two more suspects who had explosives hidden in their baggage, both of whom are currently under interrogation.

The NRI ambassador is out of his coma and slowly recovering. He doesn’t know much, the last time the Pugnus Deorum was around was well before he had been born and he’d barely remembered them from his schola days. He does authorize you to read through the embassies files, on the grounds that he hasn’t had any instructions not to and at least one of his deputies was a traitor to the NRI and a threat to you, and he’d very much like to know what else said deputy had been up to.

SARAH is able to quickly break the encryption and finds that the Military Attache had been funneling in fellow Pugnus Deorum fanatics into the embassy staff ever since he got the assignment, as well as off the books explosives. He had also been sabotaging military cooperation by deliberately slow-rolling approval on various purchase orders authorized by his government, falsely claiming that this was due to your officials dragging their feet.

Siriwan and Lisa have progressed from lewd handholding and footsie to even lewder soulful gazes. You and Willis have opened a betting book among the kids and Palace staff as to how long it’ll take the two to realize what is going on. You have, however, firmly insisted that Sekhmet and Bastet are not allowed to… interfere. You are quite aware of just how far a grifftiger will go if it thinks silly humans are being excessively silly.

You do NOT want the grifftigers to mess up the betting odds by interference, the last time they did that you’d lost money and Were Not Amused (although Willis had been caught slipping the griffkittens extra treats, the treacherous cheating cheater who cheats, cheatingly).

Parliament is just doing routine work, not trying to ‘help’ or ‘halp’, and the Eldest has let you know that they fully intend to allow you as free a reign as you wish in dealing with things.

That’s nice, they do nothing and will graciously say nothing if everything works out and criticize you endlessly if things don’t. Great.

You do receive word of a minor pirate attack on Calliope, unfortunately the primitive jumpship the pirates were using was destroyed in the fighting. Your forces took no appreciable damage that couldn’t be fixed with the vigorous application of elbow grease and cleaning supplies. You are quite glad to hear that good news.

Combat Report - Operation Blue Cougar

    Task Force - Blue Cougar.1

No hostile forces detected, local NRI naval garrison fully in friendly hands and welcomed the reinforcements. Several dozen Pugnus Deorum fanatics had tried to seize control of portions of the naval forces but had been defeated in rather bloody close quarters fighting. Pugnus Deorum infiltration of the navy appears to be far lower than that of the army.

The assigned squadron has instituted security patrols and are confident in being able to hold control of the system in coordination with local forces.

    Task Force - Blue Cougar.2

There was ongoing fighting between loyalists and Pugnus Deorum dropships when the squadron arrived. There are three NRI ‘anchorages’, large space stations that are minimally armed themselves but which serve as fleet bases for their small dropships, in the system, one of which is controlled by Pugnus Deorum forces.

The squadron is able to put an end to the fighting with relatively little difficulty, four injuries and light damage to one Bainbridge. NRI loyalist forces, in coordination with your squadron, are able to seize the anchorage.

On the planet it is a different story, the Pugnus Deorum has near complete control and is in the process of brutally pacifying the civilian population. Those who refuse to convert to their faith are being mass executed while the airwaves are filled with constant chants of ‘Tibi caeli iram, iram Deorum’, which translates to ‘The Rage of the Heavens, the Rage of the Gods’, which appears to be the Pugnus Deorum’s slogan.

The civilian population is fighting back, but it appears that most of the NRI ground forces have gone over to the Pugnus Deorum, resulting in the civilians being massively outgunned. The task force commander has started providing orbital fire support to civilian militias that are still fighting, evening the odds to a degree, and has requested the deployment of ground forces to put down the fanatics.

    Task Force - Blue Cougar.3

Upon arrival the task force was immediately attacked by Pugnus Deorum controlled dropships, but they were handled extremely poorly and your forces easily dispatched them.

Fighting has almost completely ceased on the surface, orbital scans of the capital show that the decapitated heads of the entire Roman Senate, both Consuls, and multiple other government officials are adorning pikes. The new ruler evidently styles himself as Deus Rex and contacts the task force demanding that they surrender or die. Considering that this was after the task force had swatted the meager dropship and ASF forces that they faced like particularly weak and slow flies, the task force CO was not impressed.

As on Tarentum constant chants of the Pugnus Deorum slogan are being broadcast on all channels and mass executions are taking place, however there appears to be no effective civilian resistance left. Judging by the damage, however, the fighting had been brutal and the loyalists forces had died hard.

    -----

You get a somewhat panicked dispatch from Thanh, evidently the six youngest of the rescued girls had latched onto her like baby ducklings, and for all of her many virtues, Thanh is not the most motherly of people, leaving that to her wife. So now she’s having to mom traumatized grade school kids, the only plus side being that her usual military bearing is actually quite helpful with the girls.

You spend a good ten minutes laughing at your daughter's plaintive whining about having to give them all The Talk. Willis is laughing almost as hard at a photo that’s included showing the six little girls looking like Thanh mini-me’s. You nearly fall off the couch laughing at that one.

You also receive the detailed report from DoME about cleaning up Nowa Warszawa. It will be a long and difficult process, but the good news is that they believe that they can handle it, so long as they get started soon.

There are three initial projects, each would last around five years or so, that would be the initial cleanup. Large pollution scrubbing towers would be erected across the planet in a strategically calculated pattern meant to catch the worst of the air pollution. In addition, multiple high capacity water treatment plants will be built to clean up rivers, lakes, and oceans. Finally, teams would directly clean up the worst polluted sites where industrial chemicals and such had been dumped freely for decades. Once this is finished, teams would begin replanting the forests that had been lost to the pollution and relentless strip mining, helping to bring the planet back to a proper ecological balance.

Meanwhile, non-DoME teams would begin the process of replacing all of the planets aging and highly polluting power generation equipment with the most modern fusion power plants, along with generalized subsidies and assistance in bringing local industry, commercial, and residential areas up to snuff with the latest advances in clean technology from Griffon. This will have dual benefits of preventing future pollution issues and raising the general standard of living, which should hopefully result in you being seen even more positively by all parties on the planet.

You also receive a delegation from a number of elderly Polish politicians who had been present on Nowy Gdansk from the start, all having previously been part of the government back on Nowa Warszawa prior to the Drac invasion. You were a bit worried that they’d object to your taking control over the planet, but to the contrary they were rather relieved, on the grounds that somebody had to do it and they were far too old to do it themselves. What they wanted to discuss with you was a proposal that they had, namely to name Jeremy as the Książę of Nowa Warszawa. You blink a few times, trying to pronounce that, which becomes even more baffling when you see how it’s spelled. The elders have mercy, though, and explain that it’s their equivalent of the title ‘Prince’. They propose to make it part of the Imperial tradition for the Crown Prince to have that as his primary title, thus helping to bind Nowa Warszawa closer to the crown.

You are pretty sure that Jeremy will whine a lot if you do it… but the rest of your kids will just laugh at him for acquiring Yet Another TItle.

    []Książę Nowej Warszawy it is
[]If you can’t pronounce it you aren’t doing it...

    -----

You also receive several briefings from the Military, specifically about some lessons learned in terms of garrisoning places distant from the Capital system. Your current garrison forces are designed for local deployment, are extremely manpower and equipment intensive, and can’t be easily transported.

They are proposing a new set of units, based on several proposals from the Infantry Board that you’d actually not heard of. Once you see some of their insanity, you are insanely jealous. You wish you had some of these toys when you were Infantry.

I mean, towed Gauss Rifles? 5cm infantry portable lasers? Where was all this back then? The actual kit is much heavier than you wore, but this is made up for by the fact that the troopers would all be riding in small APCs outside of actual combat.

Then there are the towed Long Toms, the Predator 20 ton Omnitank… the specialist Mech Hunter jump infantry units with gear just a bare step below your special forces units kit. The list goes on.

The proposed organization is fairly straightforward.
    • Colonial Infantry Division
      • 1st Brigade
        • 3 Colonial Mechanized Regiments
      • 2nd Brigade
        • 2 Colonial Infantry Regiment
        • 1 Colonial Cavalry Regiment
      • 3rd Brigade
        • 2 Colonial Infantry Regiment
        • 1 Colonial Cavalry Regiment
      • 4th Brigade
        • 2 Colonial Infantry Regiment
        • 1 Colonial Cavalry Regiment
      • 5th Brigade
        • 3 CAS Regiments
This wouldn’t be a force suited for offensive operations, nor would it suffice as the sole defense of a system against serious attack, but it would be able to handle general counterinsurgency work very easily, as well as general peacekeeping and colonial duties.

    -----

And then it is that time of year again, the time everybody is always waiting for. Yes, it’s budget time.

General Stewart is up first. “Your Majesty, we continue to be limited by our production facilities and our strategic materials. In addition, the Aerie is requesting more infantry and conventional vehicle training assets.”

She takes a look at her notes. “I’ll again be handling ground forces procurement. First up, Mech procurement. We would like to procure 1 Pathfinder and 2 Armored Cavalry Regiments for 2nd Armored, along with 3 Standard Mech Regiments for the same. For conventional forces, the good news is that the new Colonial units use no strategic resources, which was a deliberate design choice by the Infantry Board that we fully approve of. We are requesting 1 Colonial Mechanized Regiment for the 1st Aerie Cadre, 2 Armored and 3 Mechanized Regiments for the 2nd Infantry Division, and the purchase of a full Colonial Infantry Division to be stationed on Nowa Warszawa. This would require the purchase of 3 Colonial Mechanized Regiments, 6 Colonial Infantry Regiments, 3 Colonial Cavalry Regiments, and 3 CAS Regiments. For the first time in a long time this will just about use up all of the relevant industrial capacity, Your Majesty, including that of Nowa Warszawa.”

General Reyes is actually nor present, as she is recovering from a case of food poisoning that has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Jane slipping some laxatives into her last meal to keep her from boring everybody to death with Moar Powerpoint.

Her aide, on the other hand, is present, and simply has a handout for everybody… printed from the Powerpoint, but the young officer wasn’t precisely given any time to prepare. In short the Carrier Wings that had been delayed should be available Soon™ and there were no projected new ASF procurement requests this year.

Admiral Benjamin is back to his usual self, complete with flip chart and embarrassed looking aides, this time toting kazoos. You can’t help smirking, especially as at a gesture from their eccentric admiral the young officers start tooting the kazoos in what sounds like a kazoo version of the Imperial March as he, well, marches up to the podium.

“Your Majesty, this year we propose to lay down 20 regular dropships and 16 large ones.” he begins as soon as the chorus of kazoos ends. “And… Minions, the flip chart please!”

One tootles his kazoo, the other flips the flip chart.
    • Large Dropships (16)
      • 5 Majestic-class PBB
      • 5 Shannon-class PCA
      • 2 Tarawa-class RAT
      • 2 Newport-class LSR
      • 2 Newport-C-class AKA
    • Regular Dropships (20)
      • 20 PGL-50-class PGL
“I will note that this will be the last planned procurement of the PGL-50-class for the near future, barring combat losses.” he points out. “Starting next year production will be exclusively Bainbridge-class vessels, for now at least, as we have some plans for a new hybrid combat logistics vessel that will be put out for bid in the near future, as well as RFPs for a new infantry/conventional vehicle dropship that were just recently sent out.”

General Stewart retakes the podium as Admiral Benjamin returns to his seat, accompanied by another chorus of the Kazoo Imperial March. “Your Majesty, there is one other thing. We would like to begin a comprehensive review of all military forces, personnel, doctrines, and policies in light of the fighting that has recently concluded. Think of it as an after action review writ large.”

Bridget is as perky as ever. “Your Majesty I have some great news we overhauled and streamlined some of our procedures so it will be easier and less expensive on our end to expand existing Mech and ASF factories as well as shipyards and such although we had to do some extra hiring we now have the right sized staff to pull it off, especially with the yards since they are more or less mass produced modules by this point so there’s no point in duplicating efforts. We’re also ready to implement all of the recommendations of the Tiger Team that we sent to Nowa Warszawa, just give us the word and I’ll get the DoME and regular teams to work making that planet green and pretty again, well blue and green and brown and white and, you know what I mean!”

Isoroku is looking as he ever does, serene, calm, and in control. “Your Majesty, I know you and Siriwan have discussed peace, and even agreed, and judging by various betting pools we may see something more soon, but the fact remains that the people might appreciate there being a formal ceremony to announce things, yes?”

Beside him Jake is laughing. “I agree there, Your Majesty, and may I recommend having members of the old Sejm present, the same ones who want to foist that tongue twister of a title on Jeremy?”

There’s general laughter at that, then Jake continues. “More seriously, one avenue we can pursue over on Nowa Warszawa to help calm the situation is to set up our own media presence and work to bind up the planet's wounds and promote healing and reconciliation.”

Mary is extremely busy overseeing the final stages of work on the first HPG transmitters to be built, in a test environment at least, on the planet and is not able to get away from the experiments in time to make the meeting. She does send a memo recommending doing research on Energy Storage Batteries to streamline logistics across multiple star systems.

Harry has also missed the meeting, in his case he is working with his counterintelligence experts on analyzing the Pugnus Deorum attacks, in hopes of finding ways to better detect such things faster. He also sends a memo, requesting funding for full interrogation of the captured terrorists.

Janet, meanwhile, is looking exhausted from hours of going over laws pertaining to prosecuting citizens of a different state for crimes committed within your own borders rather than theirs.

“Your Majesty, I do not anticipate any issues with prosecuting any of the terrorists that we have captured, my office has spoken with the ambassador and he has agreed, as the senior representative of the legitimate NRI government available, to waive any legal claims to those terrorists and assents to our prosecutions freely. My people do, however, have a project we’d like to propose.”

She takes a deep breath. “We have quite a few retired law enforcement professionals who make a living by consulting. We have had several inquiries, and we think this may be a valuable means of helping law enforcement on Nowa Warszawa get off the ground effectively by hiring these consultants and sending them there to train the new recruits.”

You are very amused when one of your aides blandly informs you that your granddaughter is evidently working to learn Japanese. Sadly, as you are the one handling the betting pool, you are not yourself permitted to place a bet or make use of this information in a profitable manner. Sadly, and completely coincidentally and truly by accident, the scheming schemer who schemes who happens to be named Willis was with you at the breakfast table when that little gem landed, and sadly nobody thought to ban him from the pool.

You have no idea how that happened. That’s your story, and you are sticking to it.

And there is no truth whatsoever to the rumours spread by ungrateful children that you are placing bets through your beloved husband.

    Really, kids these days.

You then look over a number of proposed designs for transports for the new Colonial Infantry Divisions. None of them are particularly intended for offensive deployments, but are more meant to give the capacity to move a full Division around on 15 collars.

For the pure infantry dropships you get two proposals, one from Majeure Electrique and one from the same gang who keeps on submitting pyramids for everything… and sure enough, they submitted a pyramid for this one, with far too much bling on it.

Then for the mixed vehicle/infantry units you have another submission from the same two firms, and if anything this ‘Ha’tak’ is even more blinged out, with actual gold-plating on all interior spaces. You think it might be a good idea to have the Special Squad look into this company, just in case.

Finally was a special commission from Majeure Electrique in conjunction with the Imperial Griffon Aerospace Works. A 19,900 ton transport that was intended to be highly adaptable to multiple non-combat roles while still able to defend itself from pirates. Primarily it would be used to deliver Thunderbolt CAS fighters to assignments more cheaply than a Tarawa. When not in use for that purpose, however, it could be used as a logistics vessel or even as a refugee transport or disaster relief vessel. It could even serve as a hospital ship.

The results of the military review have come in. Apart from the disaster with the Pathfinder Regiments all units performed within specifications, with a number of Regiments earning upgraded ratings based on their performance. Some minor adjustments have been made in training procedures, as well as a renewed focus on ensuring proper discipline at the Regimental command level to prevent another Pathfinder debacle.

The new orbital factories are reported to be ready and operational around Nowa Warszawa. You are still having to ship in Endosteel and Double Heat Sinks for Mech production, but local vehicle production is benefitting greatly by the reduced shipping delays for Ferro Fibrous.

Likewise the new Mech factories have been completed on Griffon IV, right alongside the site for the new Megafactory complex. Likewise the other three Mech factories on the planet, along with the ASF factories, have been upgraded, allowing for much faster production of both.

You receive reports from the teams overseeing work on new Endo Steel and Double Heat Sink factory upgrades that work has proceeded on schedule. In the case of the Double Heat Sinks, the team managed to successfully arrange upgrades to all 20 orbital factories dedicated to that strategic resource.

Unfortunately that success had a cost as well, so many crews were contracted for the DHS work that work on upgrading Ferro Fibrous foundries has been delayed a year.

Likewise you receive reports from Interior regarding expansions for the various orbital shipyards and the refit yard, all of which have been completed without any delays or cost overruns. The shipyard modules in particular are now practically mass produced, streamlining the upgrade process significantly.

The formal peace treaty signing with Siriwan goes off quite well, although you very diplomatically do not mention that Siriwan is just a tad bit disheveled following a pre-ceremony snogging session with your granddaughter that the two fondly believe went completely unnoticed by all the people who, well, noticed.

A victory arch is dedicated on Nowy Gdansk to the liberation of Nowa Warszawa, it’s a simple thing, simply a ferro-fibrous arch with absolutely no decoration or marking on it. You find it quite elegant, actually.

Jeremy sends you a report and a personal letter. The report is about progress quelling the various extremist groups, progress helped immeasurably by the new broadcast stations that have been set up to totally not spread propaganda. The personal letter? Whining enormously about being saddled with this silly Książę Nowej Warszawy title. You can almost see the pouting, and get a good laugh with Willis over it. Karma, my dear beloved son, karma.

All of the various dropships are laid down on schedule and should be completed on time. Things in that department are getting rather routine, leading to an almost mass-production feel to the entire process.

The new Colonial Infantry Division has completed initial training and has been sent to Nowa Warszawa on civil transports. This should allow the 2 Armored Divisions currently based there to be available for further operations next year.

2nd Armored is well on its way to being fully up to TO&E like the 1st. 2nd Infantry is likewise coming along nicely, although both Infantry Divisions will need their mech complements to be fully operational.

The Silver Towers now have their full operational complement, and the Aerie is very pleased with the additional training resources, both aerospace and ground based.

Mary is utterly exhausted, but also quite exultant. All projects have completed this year, having kept her insanely busy all year, but now she is feeling quite triumphant.

One surprise is just how easily it appears that R&D on the new Naval Lasers would apply to smaller and larger scaled versions, making those projects immediately available even before producing any test articles.

The basic K-F theory that allows for compact cores has been fully researched, allowing for actual focused theory and engineering research on WarShips. Likewise Energy Storage Batteries have also been researched and will permit you to design and construct Recharge Stations.

Improvements to seeds and agricultural technologies have been tested and distributed, leading to increases in yield in the agricultural sector. This is most noticeable on Nowa Warszawa, where for the first time in decades the planet is able to support itself for food.

Ferro-Carbide armor has been fully researched, although specialized orbital foundries will be required to actually produce the material and currently it would only be useful on Space Stations. Likewise Heavy Naval PPCs have been fully cracked, allowing you to handle just about every major system on board the Morristown once you are able to refit her.

The expansion of POW camps has been completed, allowing you to transport most of the prisoners taken on Nowa Warszawa to the camps, somewhat reducing the tensions there.

Interrogation of the Pugnus Deorum prisoners reveals several interesting facts. The leadership, including the military attache who led the events here on Griffin’s Roost, are not nearly as religious as their followers, the religious aspects are an excuse. The actual leaders appear to be highly wealthy Plebeians who are extremely offended that they would have to give up all of their wealth and riches if they wanted to become Patricians and attain actual real political power. They want their wealth and political power too, and are willing to completely overthrow the entire system for their own benefit.

There are two significant developments regarding Calliope IV. Legal review of potential integration has been completed, and there are surprisingly few areas that would need significant harmonization, and none in anything truly important. Likewise, promotion of annexation and integration has gone very successfully. In the near future you should be able to annex the planet effectively.

Recruitment of retired law enforcement has gone very well. Hopefully you’ll start to see positive results shortly.

Turn 60 - Shifting Inside Patterns

You wake up to a bit of excitement as a seamount has decided it wants to try that ‘island’ thing all the cool volcanoes are doing and breaks the surface to give it the old college try. Thankfully the eruption is well offshore and away from shipping lanes, and the eruption itself is not putting excessive ash into the atmosphere. It does make for some fascinating viewing, as the jets of magma shooting into the sky are visible from the volcano observatory on Mt Griffsport with a pair of binoculars.

That at least is positive, because the economy on Griffin’s Roost itself is anemic, barely recovering from the recession last year. It looks like quite a few investors and banks were caught zigging when they should have zagged and are still scrambling to catch up. A discrete check verifies that absolutely nothing illegal or even unethical, heck nothing with even the appearance of impropriety, had gone on, just a business cycle catching people unaware and resulting in financial issues for segments of the economy.

You receive some more updates from Tarentum. The local Patricians, including the Proconsul in charge of the planet, had survived the uprising and are already working on putting together a new government. They have sent a dispatch to you, offering to appoint the CO of 1st Infantry, General Skillins, who has been defending the planet to this point, as magister militarum and designating your forces as foederati. This would formalize what is already going on, without the appearance of you taking over.

[]Agree to the proposalPrevents certain events
    []DisagreeAllows certain events

A Scout from the Shogunate arrives in system, again carrying a single shuttle rather than a dropship.

A few days later, Siriwan requests a meeting with you, which you grant. She comes in, holding the hand of a sturdy little toddler wearing a rather fetching child-sized and appropriately formal kimono.

“Your Imperial Majesty, it is my great pleasure and honor to introduce you to my Emperor, Tenno Takeda Daido.” she says formally, although the formality is a bit ruined by the little boy having his thumb firmly in his mouth.

Now that is a surprise, and all of your Ba instincts immediately go into overdrive. Not five minutes later, the little Emperor is happily playing with blocks in the corner of your office, watched over by the griffkittens, while you give Siriwan a Ba Look.

The explanation comes at that point. The Takeda clan is… highly disfavored in Kurita space, with members of the clan having to remain incognito and conceal their heritage, else the ISF would kill them as threats to the Dragon due to their descent from the Imperial Clan. Daido’s parents had been discovered by the ISF, but the then infant had been rescued by Siriwan’s personal bodyguards responding to the ruckus caused by the assassins murdering them.

Siriwan had then publicly declared the child as Tenno, and herself as Shogun, in order to both cast defiance at her father as well as distance herself from the pretensions of her family, which presumed that the ‘Dragon’ was supreme to mere Emperors, regardless of their divine descent according to Shinto belief.

Her first act had been to eliminate those who were loyal to her father, especially the remaining ISF agents on the two planets she considered ‘hers’, as both were effectively controlled by the Shinto monasteries and temples. She had then traveled to Nowa Warszawa, knowing that the local commander was an overly aggressive and impulsive fool. She had broadcast her defiance in a manner that the local CO couldn’t mistake, drawing the majority of the military forces on the planet into attacking her forces on Kuroisora.

At this point she smirks just slightly. “Your Majesty, the forces you saw when your reconnaissance squadron came into the system were… a bluff. I had not yet completed the upgrades and training for their crews, and each vessel had only a single pilot on board.”

Your palm has an intimate and loving relationship with your face at that revelation, so blandly delivered.

“But I was fully prepared when they arrived, and we were able to obliterate the attackers, albeit at significant losses ourselves.” she says more soberly. “At that point, I traveled here, hoping to bring about peace with you. The rest, as they say, is history.”

And with that comes the reason for why she had little Daido brought here. The two systems she controls are extremely lightly inhabited, mostly by Shinto religious communities centered around monastery complexes. She has very little industry, and even less military strength considering the losses she suffered.

And that’s the rub. She has no interest in building up industry, and thus harming the, in her words, glorious scenery of the planets she oversees. She would prefer if she could return to being a simple miko like she had been before her family ties had dragged her into political affairs. Sure, she loves the sword, studies warfare, is a fully qualified mechwarrior and pilot, and is in general a martial polymath, but she has no ambition for conquest of anything except herself.

You manage to keep a straight face at that, because you catch the faint blush, poor girl is still paddling hard up De Nile.

Ideally, she would like the two worlds she is responsible for to be under your protection, allowing them to continue their traditional ways of life without needing to fear outside enemies. She has little to offer, the yards on Kuroisora were destroyed in the fighting, she has even less industry or commerce than Griffon IV, across two systems, and brings almost no military forces to the table beyond a single Scout, two elderly Tramps, and about a half dozen surviving refitted Avengers.

You’ll need to think about this for a while, making a decision while under the influence of Ba is probably not the best idea.

In other news one of the mining stations on Griffon II strikes gold… literally. A large chunk of ejecta from the planet, kicked up by the intense volcanism, is approximately a million metric tonnes of pure gold. It had been covered by a thin crust of carbon, and had been ignored in favor of other pieces of ejecta for decades, but one of the stations had finally decided to crack it open, and hit the motherlode.

Needless to say, the miner-owned mining company that runs that station is now rather wealthy, even after taxes.

Turn 60 - Mimicking the Slide

You spend a few days reading over the proposal from Siriwan, while keeping a Ba eye on little Daido. You are quite capable of such multitasking, after all. That it is giving Siriwan and Lisa ample alone time? Purely an ancillary benefit of no interest whatsoever. You are totally not plotting with Sergeant Major Ngo on the best way to get the two to admit what is going on on a specific schedule, that would be cheating!

The proposal itself is quite extensive. In short, however, it would amalgamate Kuroisora and Sukaishi into the Griffon Empire as the Taikoku Takeda Protectorate, their internal affairs would be their own so long as none of their laws violate Griffon norms of human and civil rights, but their foreign affairs would be under your direct control. All military forces would be under Griffon Empire command, and citizens of the Protectorate would be allowed to serve in the Armed Forces of the Griffon Empire. Griffon Empire and Protectorate citizens would be allowed to freely visit without need for visas or such, and Griffon commercial interests would be welcome to invest in orbital facilities.

Considering you’ve seen photos and videos from the two planets? You really want to go on vacation there… to both planets… for as many years as you can manage. Gorgeous doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Kuroisora has roughly the same oceanic percentage as Griffin’s Roost, but rather than continents the planet has millions of islands, all of which are extremely rugged and possess lush and extravagant forests clinging to the rocky crags. The beaches are amazing to look at, and the oceans are a glorious shade of blue.

Sukaishi is, in some ways, even more stunning. It is a true water world, a single world ocean, with only small coral atolls poking above the waves. The axial tilt is almost non-existent and storms are extremely rare. The coral reefs are jewel-like in their extravagant colors, and so large as to be easily seen from orbit glittering under the gentle waves. The oceans are dense with fish, many of which are even more colorful than the reefs. The oceans are exceptionally shallow as well, over most of the planet it is perfectly possible to walk from atoll to atoll for over a thousand miles without getting your face wet, and in some areas you’ll barely get your knees wet.

No wonder Siriwan wants absolutely nothing to risk spoiling such gorgeous planets.

[]Sold, so long as I get a vacation home on each
[]Needs more negotiation, but the vacation home is non-negotiable

You also get the actual schematics and design documents for Siriwan’s Avenger-Kai, which is rather impressive considering the tech base it is built from. No double heat sinks, only standard armor, and apart from the gauss weapons completely basic weaponry? It’s pretty good within those constraints.

You get word from Calliope IV that the locals there are organizing a referendum on their own on whether or not to join the Griffon Empire. The referendum is organized such that it would require 75% of the voters to approve in order for it to take effect, and if it were successful they would be sending a petition for admission into the Empire to you. Thanks to the vagaries of transit times, which the locals apparently had not taken into account, the vote will be happening before you could possibly send any messages either way to affect it.

And sure enough, the next courier from Calliope arrives with the results, 91% in favor of annexation, and it is reported that the vast majority of the opposition was ‘just so she doesn’t think we’re pushovers’.

This means you have a decision to make. Calliope IV is not going to be contributing much to the Empire right away, but it also won’t be costing you all that much either, as the planet is very friendly to life and the locals are industrious, if still well behind the curve tech wise. So you won’t make much profit, but you won’t need to spend more than the garrison forces you already have in the system are costing you anyways.

    []Approve
    []Disapprove

In further news, Admiral Benjamin has forwarded to you the specifications for the finalists in a contest to design a combined fleet logistics and carrier dropship, on the grounds that such a vessel would replace the use of ground combat logistics vessels by the fleet while giving additional carrier bays to deployed squadrons without impacting actual combat power.

The two designs are quite different, one is yet another pyramid design, drawing chuckles, while the other is from the usual suspects over at the Imperial Griffon Dropship Works and Majeure Electrique.
