Ah I love the smell of missile spam in the morning
A strategy that worked well for them up to the point where they lost a few precious JumpShips to us and we were no longer forced to be purely on the defensive.

Scary thought: the Draconis Combine has hands down the *best* aerospace forces of any of the Great Houses, due primarily to them being the *least* fanatical adherents of the "Cult of the Battlemech". The others are so Battlemech-centric that they don't even have a naval branch of service, ASFs and DropShips are treated purely as auxiliary craft with no flag-level admiralty at all.
I mean the other great houses do have proper navies it's just that they're basically just most of their remaining assault dropships and Vengeances and their attached units and not much else thanks to the massive amounts of damage inflicted on them in the 2nd and especially the 1st Succession Wars.

No no, what I mean is that the Draconis Combine is the only Great House that even has a separate service branch for aerospace forces -- they have the Draconis Combine Admiralty for aerospace forces, and the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery for ground forces. Everyone else runs their aerospace forces as auxiliary attachments to their all-important ground forces, with no chain of command of their own.

That actually makes them even worse than the various real-life nations that have a "Army Navy", because those places at least still recognize that a unified sub-branch is required. The Great Houses don't even do that.

It's a wee bit more complicated then that. The DC I would say has your average "Cult of the Battlemech" fanatics. The difference is that they severely limit what people can become mech warriors. If you're not from a Samurai family, then you're forced to take other roles. For those that have high neurohelmet compatibility but aren't from a Samurai family, they usually end up in aerospace.

    • Due to force disparity it was decided to refrain from attacking Drac Jumpships
Kuroisara System Report
  • 9 occupied orbits
  • Inner most world is a dwarf planet barely above the minimum radii to maintain spherical shape
  • Orbit 2 is a jungle world with orbital infrastructure and evidence of light inhabitation
  • Orbit 3 is a breadbasket world, signs of very heavy shipping activity
  • Orbit 4 is a massively industrialized planet slightly larger than Griffin’s Roost
    • 2 Jumpship slip orbital shipyard is in orbit
  • Orbit 5 is a very dense and evidently heavily mined asteroid belt
  • Orbit 6 through 9 are all small gas giants that are very unremarkable
The Drac commander of the system identified herself as Gunji-no-Kanrei Siriwan Kurita. She seemed quite young for her rank, but in the recordings you have of her she was unfailingly polite, yet appeared completely at ease with her rank. The maneuvering of the defense forces was far more competent than anything you had seen out of the Drac aerospace forces since you had last faced then Tai-Sa Gustavson prior to his rebellion.

She also seems to lack the common arrogance that you were used to, her tone in advising your force commander of her intentions should he engage the jumpships was matter of fact and polite, with no threats or bluster, just a simple statement of intention and a desire that there would be ‘no need for conflict in this small matter’. She had even sent a message to you via your force CO that she would much prefer to meet with you over tea, but is quite willing to meet you with a sword if circumstances required, although she would regret the necessity.

Gunji-no-Kanrei… this is the Heir to the current Coordinator…

For some reason SARAH advises avoiding all forms of seafood if you ever happen to meet with her.

You do receive an urgent communique from the NRI. The rebellion on Tarentum is becoming even more severe, with the rebels currently holding almost half of the population centers on the planet. The rebels have multiple regiments worth of light Battlemechs, which have proven to be quite effective at handling the battle armored infantry and tanks of the NRI.

They are practically begging you for direct military aide on the ground.

Jeremy and the AFGE Ground Forces staff propose dispatching the 3rd Brigade of the 1st Armored Division and 4th Brigade of the 1st Infantry Division to Tarentum to engage the rebel forces. The old War God look is back on his face with this, since he is proposing to send his eldest son into the fire here. You can sympathize, you are sure you looked like that when you first dispatched Jeremy into battle a few years back.

And then it is budget time. You don’t have the heart to make any stale jokes about it this year.

General Stewart starts things off as usual. “Your Majesty, we still have bottlenecks with Endo Steel and Ferro Fibrous production, as well as raw Battlemech and ASF production. If we wish to maximize growth and build up our forces to the point where we can engage in landing operations on Drac targets in the near future we will need to ensure that we continue to grow in these areas. We recommend continuing to expand our factories on Griffon IV, as well as build new Mech and ASF lines there.”

Jeremy then takes the podium, he’s managed to shed the War God look again, which speaks well of his therapists. “Your Majesty, for Ground Forces procurement we have the following requests. I will note that our expansion of the 1st Infantry Division is hampered by a lack of Ferro Fibrous production, which really needs to be expanded as rapidly as possible.” he brings up a graphic showing the proposed procurement.
  • Mech Forces
    • 2 Standard Mech Regiments
    • 1 Pathfinder Regiment
  • Conventional Forces
    • 2 Armored Regiments
He also shows a graphic illustrating how the lack of Ferro Fibrous production is impacting conventional force procurement.

The gap between just how many tanks and such you could be building and how few you actually are due to shortages in strategic materials that had been long neglected in favor of aerospace materials is… sobering.

General Reyes then comes up... With her powerpoints.

“Your Majesty, while we have no carriers commissioning this year requiring new ASF groups, we do have on the horizon four Silver Towers which will each require 3 wings. We therefore recommend procuring 3 Carrier Wings this year, so as to get on top of the requirements and not overload our strategic material stockpiles.”

Well, that was quick at least.

Admiral Benjamin is next, with his flip chart and two aides this time, both looking young enough to be fresh from the Aerie. “Your Majesty, I’ll keep it short and simple as well. We have 17 Large and 1 regular dropship slip available for new production, and here is what we in Your Illustrious Navy… Minion One?” the youngster on the left flips the page of the chart. “Desire to have produced… Minion Two?” The second youngster blows a bosun's pipe.
  • Large Dropships (17)
    • 7 Majestic-class
    • 10 Shannon-class
  • Regular Dropship (1)
    • 1 Bainbridge-class
“In an effort to keep the commandant of the Aerie from stabbing me in my sleep, we will not be requesting any PPG-01’s this year.”

General Stewart simply nods as Admiral Benjamin sits down, looking down the conference table to you, “That is all from us, Your Majesty.”

Bridget is more subdued than normal. “Your Majesty, we are prepared to assist in boosting our strategic production, as well as both Mech and ASF production, upon your command. I promise that my people are chomping at the bit, the debriefings from the rescued slaves from the Dracs has been… very motivational.”

Isoroku arrives late, having been in meetings with the NRR and NRI ambassadors. “Your Majesty, I have nothing specific at the moment, but I think I have the ambassadors from both the NRI and NRR ready to start discussing a joint military command structure for the prosecution of the war against the Dracs, but this will be contingent on how the revolt in NRI space plays out.”

He pauses “Oh, and my Cultural Affairs team would like to run a general cultural festival as a way of welcoming our latest refugees.”

Jake looks as grim as you’ve ever seen him. “I don’t have anything directly applicable to the war effort, Your Majesty, but on the expansion and growth front we are in a position to setup outreach centers from various Griffon institutions on Calliope IV. This would allow us to accelerate the process of bringing them on board with us, as well as making them more capable once they are rowing beside us.”

Mary is next, looking somewhat frazzled from how busy she is. “Your Majesty, going to stick with the theme of keeping things simple. We have two recommendations, Electronics and Materials research.”

Neither Harry nor Janet are present for the meeting, being busy implementing projects that began last year.

Very interesting. Whoever is in command of this force seems to have a brain and might be amenable to talk. We might be able to convince this guy to stand down and let him become king of this system, provided that any oppression here ceases, or perhaps his force can defect to us or Gustavason.

Gunji-no-Kanrei Siriwan Kurita

What is her relation to the angry Dragon guy (presumably a Kuritan) in Nowa Warszawa? Is that guy the coordinator of this Combine expedition and Gunji is a subordinate to him?

She had even sent a message to you via your force CO that she would much prefer to meet with you over tea, but is quite willing to meet you with a sword if circumstances required, although she would regret the necessity.

Yes we want to talk.

Nice. Maybe we can convince her to work with us and have her succeed the current head of the expedition and come to a peace agreement.

Darn a competent snake, just what we need. A lot of resources are going to be needed to take out all the defenders and infrastructure there but we should probably clear out the first system before trying anything there.

Well, tells you how important the Coordinator is taking this. I wonder how much of the Dragon's might is being sent off in this direction.

Not to mention that name for the Combine... Siriwan McAllister

The shear industrial power the Combine is pushing out there, the ability to build masses of dropships and jumpships. Something really seems off here.

In this version of BT production capacities have been increased and the Dracs could have been here longer than we know. We had no idea till they popped over and if they stayed isolated for bit before branching out to conquer....

Well, remember that the overall scale of the shipping and military forces have been scaled up in this quest. This might be enormous by canon B-tech standards, but we haven't made contact with the Inner Sphere in this quest so we don't know how big their militaries are relative to this Drac expedition.

All this is silly, the combine doesn't do peace. Either you serve the dragon or die. We can't trust any treaty they negotiate to not be a play for more time to build up. They need to be defeated utterly or else they'll keep attacking.

Considering that we've already kind of thrown our lot in with the NRI we really can't lose their support and it feels bad to leave the first foreign star polity we have met hanging when we could provide a helping hand. Considering that the first contact at Kuroisata went that way I expect that the spoiling attacks from the Dracs won't be happening so soon yet.

How many decades has it been since this Combine expedition set forth from the Inner Sphere? There is a chance that Gunji isn't even old enough to remember living in the IS Combine, having only known the people around her out here in the Periphery. She might not be totally onboard the idea of serving some distant ruler she has never met before. She might be content to carve out her own little kingdom here out in the Periphery.

I mean, think about the perspective American colonists had towards the mothercountry of Britain. Yes, they shared a similar culture, and people in America said "God save the King" as a custom, but overall the people didn't really consider the King as their leader. They considered local businessmen and pastors and elders to be their leaders, not some king who ruled a far away land that their ancestors came from a long time ago. When the American Revolution happened, the Revolutionaries had popular support, with people volunteering to shoot "Loyalists" for free. The British never had such widespread, popular volunteer support in the colonies.

I imagine a similar thing might be in play here: the Dracs might be loyal to Gunji, but not some coordinator hundreds of light years away who may or may not still be alive and has never really been involved in their personal lives.

Also, look at Gustavason, a former Drac Tai-Sa. Apparently he was popular enough to gather enough men to suppress the fanatics from overthrowing him when he was reorganizing the Drac forces on Nowy Gdansk. And he had enough followers/popular support within his ranks to organize a revolution and carve out a new country independent of the fanatics. A similar thing could happen here.

uh yes the did. most of the people fighting back were still loyal to the the King. It was the Taxes and other bills that was the cause of the trouble. It was only late in the war that this changed due to many factors but at the beginning most were still loyal for the most part.
