I am glad this woman put her story out, and I'm glad it will piss off certain breeds of Southern's who still want to honor the Confederacy and it's symbols.

Her 'reframing vs rewriting' is an important distinction many miss.

Because, you know, it's not like mixed-race couples have ever gotten and married and had kids. I mean, that southern lady and her African (actual African, not afro-american) husband whose kids were some of my friends growing up overseas, that's definitely not a thing that ever happened.

She is very on point for how the legacy of the Confederacy and Klan will never be washed away, because people like her exist a a living monument. So complaining about 'forgetting history' when it comes to taking down Confederate monuments and renaming things seems like a rather massive strawman. No one is going to forget about the Confederacy just because it's monuments are taken down and places names changed.

She's not coming out against mixed race couples or anything like that, she's saying that the mixing wasn't voluntary for her ancestors.

I am not surprised that her statements are being twisted by people here to say things she didn't actually say. It's just another symptom of the potency of the Lost Cause mindset and how prevassive it is among a section of the Right.

She's being victimized by a past over a century and a half ago that has no bearing on her life now and her victimimhood is being embraced by the half of the country that wants to destroy its historical icons for being too problematic.
