    SUPER-SIZE McOMAKE!

Thule System, Free Rasalhague Republic, 3050

"We are Clan Ghost Bear. This world is ours. Those who dispute our claim must identify the size and location of their forces for immediate disposal."

"This is Admiral Griffith of the New Terran Hegemony Navy. To claim this world, you must first reach this world. We bid the WarShip McEvedy's Legacy to dispute your claim."

Admiral Griffith gave a wry smirk as the transmission from the Ghost Bears cut off with a strangled cry of disbelief and rage.

"Ma'am, both enemy battlecruisers have broken formation and are boosting on a direct intercept course for us. We have solid IDs from their emissions profiles now: one Black Lion class and one Cameron class."

“Very well. Mark their tracks and alert me if anything changes."

    -----

    Three days later….

General Quarters, General Quarters! All hands man your battle stations! Set material condition Zebra throughout the ship! This is not a drill!

In many ways, ordering battle stations on a combat starship was merely a formality. Even coming in from a relatively close pirate point at the highest sustainable thrust levels, it took hours to days for a WarShip or DropShip to reach anything worth fighting over after jumping into a system. And since it was generally impossible to conceal the energy signature of fusion torch drives, you generally knew well in advance if you were going to be doing battle when you got there.

Well-trained naval spacers were downright fanatical about keeping their ships prepared for high-G burns, keeping all objects that could become hazards during maneuvering securely stowed at all times. As a result, there was little to do but maintain their regular watches and catch as much rest as they could while the ship moved into position. But the pre-combat stress always caught up to everyone, ensuring that the crew was actually up and ready well before the official alarms sounded.

This was even more true than usual today, because everyone on board the McEvedy’s Legacy knew that today they would face full-fledged enemy warships not just for the first time in their careers, but for the first time in nearly two hundred years of human history.

After the fall of the Terran Hegemony in the Amaris Civil War and the subsequent mass desertion of the Star League Defense Force, all five remaining member powers had almost instantly turned on each other. The First Succession War had seen the so-called “Successor States” brutally wipe out most of each others’ fleets and all of each others’ ability to produce faster-than-light warships, and the Second Succession War finished off the decaying handful which remained. Since then, the economically and technologically devastated powers had continued their bloody wars by lesser means; they jealously hoarded ruined WarShip hulks which could theoretically be restored to some semblance of functionality, but sullenly accepted an informal detente in which all refrained from the ruinously expensive attempts to do so as long as no one else was either.

But now the deserters had returned in force as the invading "Clans", complete with the WarShips they had left in. . .

. . . and Griffin’s Roost was the only power in the Inner Sphere with WarShips to reply.

“All stations report manned and ready.”

    -----

McEvedy’s Legacy had been designed as a “quality over quantity” design that was still relatively affordable and could be mass produced. This was accomplished primarily by offloading all of her transport, support, and logistics functions onto dedicated parasite DropShips -- whereas Star League battleships reserved ten to twenty percent of their total mass for cargo and also carried a substantial number of aerospace fighters, the Legacy utilized an overpowered Kearny-Fuchida jump core to carry more DropShips than any other WarShip in history, then devoted practically every remaining kilogram to guns, armor, ammunition, and thrusters.

The result was a battleship which was over twenty percent percent smaller than the Star League's signature McKenna class, but boasted comparable firepower and almost three times the armor protection while still being just as fast and maneuverable. You could build an entire second McKenna for what that stupendous drive core cost, but it would take *five* McKennas to match her DropShip carrying capacity.

Of course, the Legacy wasn't facing McKennas today. Unless the Clans had radically rebuilt the original Star League designs, neither of the two battlecruisers was actually any faster than she was; the Black Lion could only match her acceleration, and the infamously overweight Cameron was actually slower. Both were nonetheless dangerous opponents; the Black Lion’s oversized battery of medium-caliber naval autocannons meant she actually had more firepower than the Legacy in her optimal range band, and the Cameron was similarly armed with medium-caliber naval autocannons plus a long-range battery of the same heavy naval particle cannons and heavy naval lasers as the Legacy.

Given that the McEvedy’s Legacy was a heavier warship with capabilities completely unknown to her opponents, the wisest move would have been to attack in close conjunction, holding back the acceleration of the Black Lion in order to avoid outpacing the Cameron. Admiral Grffith’s open declaration of affiliation with Clan Wolverine -- a lone Clan which had broken from the rest and been ordered exterminated, but was feared to have sent survivors back to the Inner Sphere -- had been ruthlessly calculated to goad them into a more aggressive attack, and it worked.

Still, the Clanners were experienced warriors and far from stupid. The Black Lion accelerated well ahead of her companion, but flipped to decelerate well before reaching any known weapons range, reducing her closing speed and then boosting “sideways” at her full 2.5-gravity overthrust to force McEvedy’s Legacy to either follow suit or cede control of the engagement. The Legacy followed the maneuver but held back to 2 gravities, falling “behind” laterally as the ships’ courses shifted from flying directly at each other to slanting in at shallow diagonals. The plodding Cameron continued to accelerate at its plodding 1.5 Gs without turnover, clearly angling for a close-range pass across the stern of the Legacy while it was pinned by its engagement with the Black Lion.

“We’re clearly reading all the same books.” noted Admiral Griffith. “Textbook SLDF tactics all around. Are their DropShips burning for the planet?”

“Negative, they’re staying close to the JumpShips at the nadir point. Six Monolith class, eight Invader class, eight Merchant class, and seven Scout class. That’s collars for a hundred and nine DropShips to our thirty, but most of theirs are transports.”

“I’d rather not risk letting them reach the planet if they decide that our support justifies including the people down there in their ‘Trial of Annihilation’ against the Wolverines. Send in the DropShips.”

“Yes ma’am.” The Legacy’s captain nodded to the lieutenant at the communications console.

McEvedy’s Legacy to all auxiliaries. Burn clear and intercept the enemy DropShips at the nadir point.”

The Legacy’s shoal of parasite War Goose carriers and Odysseus pocket corvettes split away in hard overthrust burns, angling their courses to circle around the incoming Clan WarShips.

Just over thirty Clan AeroSpace fighters sped out at even higher accelerations to meet them -- a suicidally bold move for so few ASFs, since each of the corvettes and carriers mounted a pair of AR10 capital missile launchers. Sixty Barracuda anti-fighter missiles spat into the void, then sixty more; there was no need for a third volley.

Following their orders to burn clear rather than passing close enough to harass the enemy capital ships, the DropShips adjusted their course to remain well outside of effective weapons range. The Cameron -- now close enough for her nameplate to be read as the Dieron’s Run -- nonetheless fired her broadside naval PPCs. The signature blue-lightning streaks of the particle cannons splashed harmlessly over the passing DropShips, a calculated insult to their “cowardice” for not engaging.

Had they remained at full thrust, the DropShips could have intercepted their enemy counterparts before the three WarShips came within battle range of each other. But sustained high-G operation was physically exhausting, and there was no point in pushing it -- the Clan DropShips would under no circumstance return to their parent JumpShips and retreat in the face of the hated Not-Named Clan.

    ----

Space combat was silent death in the cold void.

    "Commence firing."

The Legacy’s 55-centimeter lasers energized at the push of a button, each battery pulsing a dozen invisible beams of coherent gamma radiation downrange. Unlike the smaller-scale versions used by Battlemechs and AeroSpace Fighters, capital lasers did not bother with visible-frequency beam guides; the extreme precision required to score hits at starship combat ranges made that sort of manual targeting moot. In the same heartbeat, scorch-edged burns seared into the armored flank of the Bear’s Den.

"Solid hits, Admiral. They are penetrated and leaking air.”

    "Very good. Continue the engagement."

Unable to return fire with her harder-hitting but shorter-range autocannons, the Black Lion -- her nameplate declared her to be the Bear’s Den -- went to maximum overthrust on a least-time trajectory, trying to push into range as quickly as possible. The Legacy responded by angling away at her own full acceleration, two-and-a-half gravities of acceleration brutally hammering her crew down into their shock-framed seats. She couldn’t hold the range open without giving up the engagement and thrusting directly away from Bear’s Den, but she only needed to minimize the rate of closure in order to make the most of her range advantage.

Still out of range and falling even further behind, Dieron’s Run fired her forward PPCs, splashing the Legacy’s broadside to even more negligible effect than it had on the DropShips.

    ----

By the time the Legacy’s lasers had cooled and recharged for a second salvo, her heavy naval PPCs were in range as well, sending a rolling barrage of blue-white lightning streaks downrange as an eye-searing counterpart to the aft laser bay. Still unable to reply directly, the Bear’s Den maintained her acceleration while twisting into an eccentric spiral. . . but that was a textbook evasive maneuver, and the PPC salvos had been aimed for it. Three of the five PPC batteries struck home, shattering craters into the battlecruiser’s armor, and an unstoppable surge of power backlashed wildly into her electrical systems.

“Engine hit! Her acceleration’s dropping!” came the triumphant report.

“Vampire, vampire, vampire! Two capital missiles inbound from the Dieron’s Run. No fire control, they’re firing blind on a ballistic course. Anti-missile systems are tracking.”

The Legacy’s lasers and particle cannons unleashed a third combined salvo into the bow of the Bear’s Den as the defensive pulse lasers came online in stuttering green streaks.

“Both vampires intercepted, but we’ve got seven more incoming -- two from Dieron’s Run and five from Bear’s Den. Lacie says she can handle that, but only just. Even with the new extended-range pulses, these are a lot harder to knock down than the usual fare.”

By the third salvo, it was clear that the Bear’s Den was in a hopeless situation -- she was still closing in on the Legacy, but the hit to her engines had lamed her enough that she no longer had any chance of reaching the bigger ship with her autocannons before she was torn apart. The Clanners had to know that, but they held grimly to their course, still rushing onwards as the fourth and fifth salvos slashed in.

“Aspect change! She’s trying to clear her broadside. . .”

Turning her broadside to the Legacy would expose fresh, undamaged armor and allow the Bear’s Den to fire all six of her missile launchers. . . but it also meant cutting her acceleration, and against the Legacy’s range advantage all it would mean was a drawn-out death. It was also too late -- the Legacy’s sixth salvo was already in space, and this time every single PPC struck home.

Defiant to the bitter end, the Bear’s Den hurled a futile autocannon salvo at her killer as she disappeared forever in a blinding burst of fusion plasma, taking with her Khan Karl Bourjon. Dieron’s Run frantically flipped and boosted for the jump limit, leaving behind the stranded JumpShips and DropShipsand carrying a message that would throw the Clans into absolute havoc:

“Run, little cruiser. Run and tell your Clans that justice has come and Kerensky’s crimes will soon be revealed to the entire Sphere.”

    ----
(( For the record, I rolled it all fair and square using the current Battleforce rules and Google’s dice roller. The Legacy used bracket fire mode to increase the accuracy of her firing at the cost of only doing 40% damage, and consistently rolled a 50% hit rate for all of her salvos except the last one, when ALL five PPC batteries rolled hits and only the laser battery missed. ))

A View From the Ice Part 6

The weather had eased off recently enough to allow people to go outside without worry of losing limbs to frostbite almost instantly from the windchill alone. Michal walked along the line of the Armia Krajowa all lying in the snow with each man and woman who had the sleek and dangerous-looking M2954.

He and his people had spent the last few weeks since they got them learning every part of this marvellous new weapons system, how to field strip, clean it and deal with various problems that wouldn't require an armourer to deal with.

He wanted his people to be familiar with their primary rifle before they moved onto things like Man-Pack PPCs, support lasers and SRM launchers for the support teams. They would all be riflemen before anything else and would know their weapon like they knew their loved ones.

He'd gotten extensive practice with it from the AFGR troopers before they had been issued to the Armia Krajowa and was already skilled with the use of the M2954. He now walked along the line of the prone forms as the sent beams downrange. Some of them cursed as their beams went wide as they instinctually compensated for the nonexistent recoil.

They were getting good though as he watched one of their younger comrades fire.

He stopped behind Starszy Szeregowy and took out his binoculars as he watched her hit the target dead centre every time. He made a mental note to see about having her assigned to a Manpack PPC team.

    "Good shooting," Michal said,

"Thank you, Sir," she said as he moved on.

He looked forward to when they were fully familiar with their new weapons and it would make the whole Armia Krajowa a lot more dangerous. Hell, he wished he could send half of the equipment they had at Camp Mocny back to the Armia Krajowa on Nowa Warszawa; it would be a major boon to those who were still fighting there.

He kept walking along the line thinking back to his old home and to Misha when he finished for a day.

    ---

Old Leopold sat at his desk. Since he had become the head of their little council he had barely any rest. He had been talking with several engineers from the Grifs Department of Mega Engineering on this Arcology they wanted to build for them.

The Council had held a brief debate with the Sejm and it had been quickly agreed to. Though they had asked to be kept informed and assist in the design to some degree since they would be living in this new home after all.

It had been agreed to and one of their people who had been an architect had been assigned to be a contact with the government for the Dome team. He was also assisting in some of the architectural design which reminded him of some of the older parts of Nowa Warszawa which were supposedly based on that of Warsaw back on the old homeworld.

He looked over to his son, "So what do you think of all this?" He asked.

"I think that this Arcology," said Young Leopold, "is an interesting idea, though some people have some doubts about it."

    "Oh?" said Old Leopold

"Some worry that we are depending too much on Griffin's Roost," Young Leopold said, "I am thankful to them for making sure we didn't die in the snow but some people are becoming concerned they are slowly devouring us."

"I can understand that my son," Old Leopold said, "however they have forced nothing on us and did help us and have respected our traditions and rights of our government. I am willing to trust them until they give us a reason not to and so far they have proven to be honourable in their dealings with us."

    "Yes Father," Young Leopold said.

    Subject: CHECK THIS OUT!

So, Michelle and I were stealing borrowing one of the Jenner mechs that the university managed to piece together from trampled parts for, ah, reasons, and we found something really cool.

    Attachment: Encrypted Video

"Okay, try it now. Down, down, up, up, left, right, left, right. . . annnnnd start!"
"Reactor online. Sensors online. Weapons online. All systems nominal. Royal Technology Demonstration Mode online. Pulse Lasers, enabled. Extended Range Lasers, enabled. Targeting Computer, enabled. Artemis IV fire control, enabled. Myomer Acceleration Signal Circuitry, enabled. Double Heat Sinks, enabled."
"So, it turns out that every single Inner Sphere mech has all of the advanced Star League tech installed; they're actually inherent features of the core Battlemech hardware and software package that everyone has been using. The entire 'LosTech' thing only happened because, well, the trial period ran out, so all the 'Mechs used by the Great Houses locked themselves down to trial mode."

Podporucznik Nina Kościuszko had her helmet under her arm as she walked into the hanger breathing in the heady scents of grease, burning metal from the welding torches and the general smells of an active hanger. She sighed contentedly as she walked over to her Winged Hussar which she called Tur.

She waved to the techs she passed as she approached her own tech, Plutonowy Adam.

"Hey Adam," Nina said, "How's Tur today?"

"Your steed ma'am is all ready to go," Adam said with a grin, "just finished repairing the leg actuator."

"Good!" she said smiling back, "You're a lifesaver."

"It's what I do ma'am," He said with a shrug.

She climbed into the cockpit and began booting up the mech as Adam does the external checks on the exterior of the Hussar.

"Ok, your all good out here," Adam said into his com.

"Good in here as well," Nina said, "Heading out now."

"Ok Ma'am, see you in in a few hours," Adam said as he backed off.

She walked Tur into the centre then boost off using the hover system and headed out into the snow. She loved this thing she had always loved watching the old PZL P13 airbreather take off when she was in the Academy on Nowa Warszawa and hoped she could fly one. However, the invasion had ruined those dreams and the Dracs, after her capture in a failed ambush among other things, had made other dreams medically impossible.

But skimming over the ice and snow in Tur was amazing. Seeing everything streak past over the majestic white desert as she went over the snow. She sped over to Nav Point Alfa and settled into her usual routine of scanning the horizon and enjoying the thrill of speeding over the snowscape as she made her way out on her patrol.

    ---

Michal watched from the window as the Winged Hussar moved off on patrol. It had been an inspired idea by their unit's command and he knew a lot of them made the most of it.

He heard the door open and looked over to see Major Park coming in.

"Park," he said moving around the desk to shake his friend's hand, "how are you doing today? Did the interviews go well with intelligence?"

"Too well I think. Most of them are legitimately scared of Jakub now," Park said shaking his head, "After your debrief with them and speaking to Rowecki among others they said your guys gave them a good brief on the Dracs ground side capabilities and responses. Though Jakub sacred the hell out of them with some of the stuff he said. Hell I think I saw a few of them taking notes."

"He has that effect on people," Michal said.

"I can see that," Park said with a sigh, "Though given the tricks Rowecki and Jakub taught my troops in hand to hands I'm looking forward to some of my guys going against some of the other infantry companies in hand to hand competitions."

"Those two are some of the best-unarmed fighters we have," Michal said, "Hell Park I told you Jakub was one of the Cichociemni."

"True," Park said, "Anyway looks like everything is going well. No major explosions and the Queen taking the side of the Senate was a good thing."

"Aye," Michal said, "Misha was telling me that because of the Queen's actions along with all the support, the Winged Hussars and along with all the infrastructure that has been built has gone a long way to supporting the integration faction of the Sejm."

"That's good," Park said, "that will help a put lot of people's mind at ease well aside from the chamber of delegates."

They both laugh at that, "Anyway," Michal said, "how is your wife?"

"She is doing well," Park said, "In fact...."

    ---

Old Leopold smiled as he spoke to one of his allies in the Sejm. Things were going well. The Pro-Integration faction was making headway and given the autonomy, they were being given under the Imperial Government was really helping his case.

It was also setting a lot of their people's minds at ease, he said his goodbyes and left heading toward his son's house. He had proposed to his Grif girlfriend and they were looking at planning there wedding.

He whistled as he walked through the snow towards their house. He was looking forward to the wedding as it would be nice to see his family grow.

A View From the Ice 8

Michal's eyes narrowed as he read the reports that his people on Griffins Roost it soured the sweet taste he had recently in his mouth at his promotion to Generał dywizji of the Armia Krajowa on Nowy Gdansk. He looked to see an equally hard look on Misha's face and that of Starszy chorąży sztabowy Rowecki who had an intent look in his eyes.

Added into their little group was his executive officer Kaptain Jan Wojtek who was the commander of the Winged Hussars. He was a tall man who carried a cavalry sabre he had commissioned for the role and had been one of the few tank commanders who had survived through stupidly good luck though he had been captured during the Dracs initial steam roller.

"These attacks on our brothers and sisters on Griffins Roost," he said as he placed the pad down on the desk, "Will not stand."

Misha nodded slowly, "In my role as head of Agencja Bezpieczeństwa Wewnętrznego and my seat on the council I agree with you. Old Leapold has already sent an offer to assist in any way we can."

"Good," Michal said and looked to Jan and Rowecki, "what can we send from our side and whom?"

"Not much from the Hussars," Jan said with a frown, "I'm still not happy with their level of training but I can spare a lanca if possible should the Griffs ask."

Jan leaned back, "Though deploying them to a city is not something I'd like given the amount of damage they could do in a friendly city."

"In terms of our side," Rowecki said, "I can think of two platoons we could deploy bez namysłu."

    "Go on," Michal said.

"Well we can deploy Alfa Recon Platoon of Pierwszy company and Beta Recon Platoon of Druga Company," Rowecki said.

Michal paused bringing the people who were in those platoons to mind and the said, "You essentially recommending to send people trained by Jakub and the Ona Diabeł to assist in this?"

    "tak sir," Rowecki said

He leaned back and looked to Jan and Misha, "Thoughts on Rowecki's recommendation?"

"Sending Jakub I agree with," said Jan, "However sending Ona may not be wise given how brutal she can be."

"She served with Jakub," said Misha, "What does he say about her?"

"All he said to me was point her at a target and it will be accomplished," said Michal, "Works with what I've seen of her. She can be quite brutal if required but can also act as a scalpel as well."

"True," Jan said with a nod, "though something in her did break after the invasion. I mean there is a reason the Dracs called her the Oni's Bride, I'm amazed they were able to take her and get her here. That's not even counting Jakub's own exploits and the fact we got him here is a godsend even if he scares the Griffs every now and then."

"One of the whims of fate," Michal said, "Anyway I'll pass to Old Leopold the offer to the Griffs to send Alfa Recon Platoon of Pierwszy company and Beta Recon Platoon of Druga Company along with a lanca of Winged Hussars as a first response if asked for as well as more aid if required from the Armia Krajowa."

They all nodded and Misha said, "I've also offered my own agents to help when I spoke to Old Leopold. They likely won't be as good as the Griffs own people but more eyes never hurt."

"Good," said Michal, "I'll pass my own recommendations to Old Leopold at the emergency meeting in an hour."

They all nodded. Time to help the people who saved them.

    ---

Jakub sat with his platoon as they went over the briefing. Everyone had been moved around since the Hussars were formed, except the core of his recon platoon were some of the best the Armia Krajowa had to offer in terms of impromptu special operations as well as field reconnaissance.

He looked at the notes on this gang and grimaced. The fact the Bratva had military hardware made things interesting, but still all things being relative this would be an interesting job.

"If we get the go-ahead," Jakub said looking at Porucznik Anka, "We need information. I recommend we work with the Griffs and as soon as we identify key targets to the Bratva infrastructure and leadership, as well as weapon stores, we go in hard and fast and take no prisoners."

"Are you sure that is wise Plutonowy?" Anka asked, "this is a civilian area after all so it could cause issues with the Griffs."

"Yes Ma'am. They have military hardware and have shown they aren't afraid to use it," Jakub said, "We can't afford to play nice with them. I imagine Ona is saying the same thing to her unit but as it stands right now these people rocketed themselves from criminals to terrorists fairly quickly. Niceties are wasted on them."

Everyone in the platoons briefing room nodded and Anka said, "I know but I need to play devils, advocate."

"I know Ma'am," Jakub said, "But we need to break this group hard and fast... if we get the go-ahead from the Griffs to assist, that is."

"Still up in the air Plutonowy," Anka said, "Right now we are going over the briefing. If we are given the go-ahead I'm letting you off the leash."

Jakub gave a smile that didn't reach his eyes, "I guess that means I and Ona get to show this Bratva skurwiel why the dracs feared us back home?"

Anka gave a smile almost as cool as their home, "Tak, though do remember that this is a friendly world."

"Oh we will," Jakub said with a smile that was some how colder than Anka's and the meeting went on.

    ---

Misha and Michal sat in their house feeling drained. They had sent personal messages of condolence to Jake, Harry and other friends they made on Griffins Roost and had brought on a general depression within Nowy Gdansk. What aid that could be prepared was being sent out on the next shipment along with hopefully the elements of the Armia Krajowa and the asserts of the Agencja Bezpieczeństwa Wewnętrznego.

"Hopefully we can do some good," Misha said, "You know Katlyn has offered to travel to Griffins Roost with a medical teams to help despite her Council position."

"Tak, I heard," Michal said, "just like her to jump in and help."

"Still Jake and Harry," said Misha, "and Parks youngest son in a coma."

Michal's eyes went hard, "Tak, man was beside himself when he found out he even put in a request to return home to his wife and his two other children."

Misha shook her head sadly, "Caught in a crossfire in a Bratva Robbery as he was depositing money from his bakery. Bratva pieprzony draniu."

"Tak," Misha said softly, "Still they will pay."

    "That they will," Michal said.

    Jakub's Night Out

The night was dark as Jakub and his squad stalked it's prey. Since they had arrived on Griffins Roost they had had a bit of a hard time getting used to the heat but they had persevered. Now they waited. Intelligence had found this underboss who had some of the old miltia weapons and had been responsible for several major robberies.

Time for him to meet the devil, they had watched as he went into a private bar that was now known to be a Bratva Hideout and store. Alfa Platoon had been given the job of seeing to this piece of human odpadki.

His squad stacked up at the door and he got the confirmation - two clicks over the comms - that Anka had set up at the rear door. He was dressed casually as he got out of the car he and his squad had parked close by while they waited inside the van.

He walked up to the bored-looking bouncer who was smoking and gave him a look as he approached, "What do you want?"

"My van broke down. Can I use your landline? My phone has no signal," Jakub asked as he approached.

"No you can't," he said as the man moved towards taking him out of pickup of the camera near the door, "I think you should leave if you know whats..."

Before he could finish the sentence Jakub punched I'm in the gut and then his hand dropped smoothly and in one quick motion rammed his knife up under the man's jaw as he doubled over, killing him.

Over the platoons comm net, Jakub said as he wiped the knife on the dead mans cloths, "Doorman down moving to Alfa stage."

Jakub quickly donned the armoured combat jacket and helmet his squad handed to him along with his rifle

    ---

Oleg looked out over the gathered members who were drinking and laughing and he grinned. Since they had gotten the weapons life was looking good for all levels of the Bratva.

Hell the places he'd hit had turned over quite a profit and it was only looking up. The Pigs couldn't even hope to touch them and the money was just pouring in. He turned to the man next to him smiling and opened his mouth.

He never even finished that thought as the wall behind him exploded showering him in shrapnel killing him and the man he was about to speak to along with several others as the Armia Krajowa lead by Anka's squad entered from one side and while they were looking that way Jakub's squad blew out the front door.

They rushed in dropping the nearest Bratva Soliders with well placed shots. Several of the quicker Bratva dived into cover and tried to return fire while others dropped like puppets with their strings cut as they were taken down.

The survivours were caught in the cross fire and quickly cut down and both squads quickly linked up as they moved towards that basement door.

Jakub slamed into the wall with one of his people, a young woman who'd survived the worst the Dracs could throw at her, behind him. Jakub threw the door open and the woman tossed a grenade down which was followed by several more from the rest of the squad. They waited until the grenades went off and then charged down with Jakub leading the way.

They found several dead men and two who were still breathing through luck more than good management. A pistol shot rang out and he saw their target a bloated piece of odpadki if he ever saw one who was covered in blood and seemed to have broken arm.

How he was still standing Jakub didn't know but he rushed the bastard before he could get another shot off shoulder checking him and sending him stumbling back.

Before he could recover he delivered a calculated butt stroke to the man's head knocking him out and hopefully not killing him.

"How the hell was he still alive," asked the woman who had entered the basement.

"Fluke of ballistics most likely," said Jakub as he looked at the woman and the two other men, "Starszy szeregowy sweep this basement for any intel and see if there are any weapons stored down here."

"Tak," they said as they began to sweep through the woman dropped to a knee to check the two wounded for weapons and intel as well as to treat them.

"Porucznik," Jakub said over the comms, "Underboss secure beginning sweep."

"Roger that," Anka said, "We secured some of the side rooms found a number of drugs and a few guns. Let me know what you find."

    "Tak, ma'am," Jakub said.

After the sweep the sun began to rise, they came away with a good haul for intel to go over and the police, SWAT and Paramedics followed on in. So most of the survivors could be handed over and treated, while they took the underboss to intel along with recovered document and weapons.

As the anti-Bratva campaign came to a victorious end, it became increasingly obvious that Jane was up to something. More precisely, Jane was always up to something, but those who knew her well could generally tell when she was extra specially up to something. The special operative was honestly pretty terrible at hiding that she was up to something, but she was tremendously skilled at concealing the exact nature of her intended shenanigans.

The reveal came one bright sunny morning, when the morning quiet of Griffsport was broken by the entire Special Branch marching down the central boulevard in a surprise parade, clad in stolen borrowed Winged Hussar ultralight mechs that had been elaborately decorated as Sisters of Battle cosplay. Behind the came every single military unit stationed in Griffsport, with their armored combat vehicles just as elaborately decorated as their approximate counterparts from the 40K universe, most notably shiny new Jaguars dressed up as surprisingly convincing Baneblades.

And for the grand finale of the parade came the brand-new Light Fire Company (who were supposed to be nowhere near Griffsport!), with their mechs elaborately rigged as miniature Titans and bearing enormous pennants declaring, "ALL HAIL THE HOLY GOD-EMPRESS OF GRIFFIN!"

You are definitely going to strangle Jane. And Jeremy. And General Potter, whose cheerful smirk says he was totally in on this.

    OMAKE: PROJECT CLEVER GIRL

Many centuries ago, long before mankind reached for the sky and stars, a talented young entrepreneur named P.T. Barnum taught the world that confident showmanship could turn something merely a step beyond the mundane into something absolutely spectacular.

Today, the aerospace division of Majeure Electric was applying that lesson to unveiling and pitching their newest project. More specifically, they were pulling a bit of a fast one by taking advantage of the presence of the Queen and several high-ranking military officers to view the company’s progress on the new Microraptor class escort carriers. After viewing the partially assembled Microraptors on the production line, the royal party was ushered into an adjacent facility housing a heavily masked and shrouded aerodyne DropShip backlit by large stagelights.

“Your Majesty, Generals, Admirals, and other guests. . .”

The shrouds snapped aside to reveal an absolutely massive shark’s mouth logo stretched across the bow of a heavily modified Microraptor. The rest of the DropShip was painted in what looked like a dappled variant of the low-visibility slate-grey that the AFGR had adopted for the Defiant class assault dropships, subtly accentuated by pale silver detailing and a belly fade towards a lighter blue-grey. A decidedly intimidating number of extremely large caliber gun ports were set into that bow, along with a sleekly contoured anti-missile system turret under the chin and another on top, just behind the cockpit.

    “. . . Majeure Electric presents Velociraptor!”

Hidden speakers on board the testbed reverberated with the signature shrieking snarl of its namesake. Serried ranks of missile tubes neatly recessed into the aerodyne wings extended in swirls of dry ice smoke, and clusters of semi-conformal gun mounts set into the roots smoothly precessed to show their range of motion.

“As you can see, Velociraptor is a substantially reconfigured derivative of the Microraptor.” explained the company executive after a suitable pause. “Our engineers felt that the AFGR contract was somewhat over-ambitious in terms of fighter capacity, and they convinced us to green-light working her up as an internal project. What we’re able to deliver with this platform is an assault dropship / carrier hybrid with over three times the firepower, twice the protection, and significantly improved acceleration, all while still carrying a flight of AeroSpace fighters and a utility shuttle. And because she’s built on the same spaceframe and most of the same avionics as Microraptor, she is ready for immediate production.

If you’ll step this way, we have complete technical dossiers for your perusal. . .”

    Omake:

After basic safety testing to ensure that there weren't booby traps built into it or inside it, the refugee safe had been set up in Special Branch's break room as an open challenge. It wasn't a very big or sophisticated-looking safe, but it was a vintage Star League model, and that meant it was actually quite difficult to crack.

"Do you really have to do it like this?"

Jane was dangling from a ceiling-mounted reel in an advanced tactical intrusion outfit, which is to say, a modified sneaksuit that just coincidentally looked like a Catwoman outfit. Hey, if the DEST get to dress theirs up all cyberninja. . .

"This is difficult, let me concentrate! Bloody thing has all the relock mechanisms."

"It wouldn't be as difficult if you weren't hanging from the ceiling for no reason at all!"

"Tactical intrusion is an art, which should be practiced at every opportunity." Jane would sound much more convincing if she wasn't also flipping upside-down and sticking her tongue out at Michelle.

The break room speakers abruptly break into a certain song.

    "Thank, you, SARAH."

    "STOP ENCOURAGING HER, SARAH!"

Thanks to sunhawk for looking this over and providing the impetus for this.

A View From the Ice 9 - Armoured Warfare

Michal walked onto the snow heading across the campus humming softly he'd paid a visit to the commandant of the campus to talk about the new Rapid Reaction Force that had been stood up recently and how they would work with the Armia Krajowa so far the force was small with only a few hovercrafts. Still, it was a promising start; he'd already heard a few of the Hussars looking to test their Lanca out against them.

He shook his head, chuckling as Jan Wojtek's people were a very hot-headed bunch, but it would be good to get some exercises going. It would help build up both forces for when the Dracs come back. Though those pirates who recently jumped in the system though defeated worried him there could be others out there. Nowy Gdansk was the most exposed of the member worlds which worried him. They needed to work on improving their defences on the world; he also had stepped up drills and was putting in a request for some ASFs although he knew they had other priorities.

He looked back at Rowecki who was coming out behind him as he lit his cigarette and took a drag, "So Sierżant ready to go and meet the prince?" he asked with a smile.

"Tak sir," Rowecki said with a grin. They both liked the younger man as he could hold his drink, "Any idea what this is about?"

"He was working with Jan and several of the old tankers that fought the Dracs in the invasion on some new designs," Michal said, "He thinks their experience against the Dracs would help in the design process and they’re using the campus here as it is out of the way enough for testing."

"Given Jan was one of the few tank commanders who managed to down one of the Drac tanks," Rowecki said, lighting up his own cigarette. They started walking to a small annex with an attached hanger, "though it cost him his old Grom tank when that Mech came up, and it was more an ambush from the way he tells it."

"Tak," Michal said, "still he is one of the few who managed it. The rest are gunners, loaders and drivers as well as the odd commanders and mechanics who managed to get out. Most are working on the Verdun UDV or in the motor pools."

"Tak," Rowecki said, "Sir, I imagine a lot of them will be happy to get new tanks."

"True, let's go and see what the Prince has for us," Michal said.

    -----

As they entered the earth of the annex they were greeted by Jan at the desk who was in a lined working uniform that was the working uniform of the Hussars.

"Michal, Rowecki," Jan said, shaking their hands, "thank you for coming."

"Always glad to get new hardware," Michal said to Jan with a smile, "where is the Prince?"

"Jeremy?" Jan said, "he is doing his final walk around of his babies before you get a look at them and wants to make sure they are at their best before he puts the proposal forward."

"I can't blame him there," said Rowecki, "The man is one of the best young officers in the AFGR as well as the queen's son that puts a great deal of pressure on him."

"Tak," Jan said, "Anyway let's get to the tanks."

They walked down the corridor passed several workshop spaces and a break room and into the main hangar there sat three armoured forms of tanks they were invited there to see. Just as they came in, they saw Jeremy walk around from the back of the largest tank, his overalls stained with grease.

The younger man smiled at them, "Generał, Sierżant good to see you both again."

"Good to see you too major," said Michal, "thanks for inviting us to the demonstration."

"No problem, let's get a look at what we have shall we?" Jeremy said.

The first tank they came to was a great beast with a great gun sticking out of the hull. It looked squat and dangerous and its hull was painted in winter camouflage.

"This is Project Grom Dwa or Grom Two," Jeremy said, "it is intended as an Urban Defence Vehicle it's armed with a Gauss Rifle and packs a punch compared to what the records refer to as the Hetzer."

    "How effective?" asked Michal

Jeremy looked to Jan, and he said, "I threw together a crew, and we took it through its paces on the academy tank range and it held up well, and when we test-fired it's gun against Battlemech Armour it punched through."

Jeremy then jumped in, "From what the simulations and exercise we have put it through a lance of them could hold an Urban Area against a much larger force. As to handling according to Jans people, its controls are well laid out as are its internals making it easy to move inside the compartment."

"Tak," said Jan, "Zofia loved the damn thing when she talked to Jeremy and the designers. She based a lot of the internal layouts and controls on the old Grom, and according to her it handles like a dream. Hell, her and Pavel also worked on the autoloader together."

"Those two," said Jeremy, "were a major driving force it's development and have proved to be a boon when it came to troubleshooting problems we ran into. I'd like to take them back to Griffin's Roost and put them through an engineering degree program if possible and have them assigned to research and development in the AFGR."

"I can't see any problems with that Major," Michal said, "providing they agree, that is."

"Thank you," Jeremy said, "I'll speak to them anyway. On to the next one."

They moved onto the next one it was on the same chassis as Project Grom - the exception was the LRM cluster mounted on its back, "We are internally calling this one Project Pilum," Jeremy said moving up putting his hand on the side, "it has a pair of LRM launchers on its hull. We were worried initially that it would cause issues on the chassis however Pavel and Filip were a major factor in this. We only tested it the last few days and it's promising."

Jan then said, "Ideally the Pilums would work alongside the Grom Dwa with the tank crews of the Grom or the next time by calling in fire from the Pilums."

Michal looked at it and said, "Would be useful, what is the final tank?"

"That would be the project Spyglass scout tank," said Jeremy as they walked over to the last smaller tank it was lightly armed, "This is mainly a recon that all the teams collaborated on it's intended to be a recon element both scouting out enemy forces, passing actionable intelligence and calling in artillery support."

The Spyglass tank was small. Michal could see the observation equipment and several small blisters on its hull as well as several small arms.

"Armour is somewhat lighter than most of what has been previously built, but the engine is fairly overpowered allowing it to really move," Jan said, "it can get almost anywhere in most areas and repositions were needed rapidly."

"Looks promising," said Michal, "how's it handled?"

"We took it to various places on Nowy Gdansk as well as various places on Griffin's Roost," said Jeremy, "it handled really well in all environments we tested it in."

"Very nice," Michal said, looking back along with the test models, "Still how they will perform in combat will be key but it does look promising. If you will let me, I pen my own recommendation that these designs should be put in service."

Both Jan and Jeremy smiled at that as did the nearby staff, "We would like that Sir," said Jeremy.

"Anyway, let us head to one of the workshops," said Jan, "we have recordings of each of the tests we can go through we also have one more an APC for Power Armour a 60 ton heavy APC optimized for power armour equipped with an Enhanced ER PPC, LRM rack, and AMS system that should have the initial prototype be off the line sometime in the next week if you would like to observe them."

"I would like to observe the test and way we have some test recordings to observes so lead the way," said Michal and then exited the hanger heading to the workshop.

    Prep for action

Jermey looked at one particular playback with interests with the other staff.

    Simulation section 221Alpha Romeo

    HMS Intrepid - Bridge
"Hands to Action Stations! Actions Stations! Assume V State one condition Zulu Alpha!"

The Alarms and the robotic blared aboard the HMS Intrepid as Anson ran to his duty station on the Bridge as the assistant tactical officer and jumped into his seat taking over from the scared cadet and booting up his screens and adjusting his void suit and felt his mouth go dust dry as he saw what was on it.

Shortly afterwards the other bridge officers swarmed through the door assuming the positions and allowing the night watch to go to their duty stations. As this was all underway he checks his tactical console and looked to the Tactical Officer.

"all ready ma'am," he said to Lieutenant Commander Lisa Kingsly she nodded and turned to the captain is his chair, "Tactical ready Sir!"

Then the other calls came in as the officers reported to their bridge positions and took over their roles.

    "Engineering ready Sir!"
    "Navigation ready Sir!"
    "Manoeuvring ready Sir!"
    "Damage control Ready Sir!"
"Medical Ready Sir!" Came over the coms.

"All divisions ready and reported Sir," said the XO who was in charge of damage control."

"Thank you, Commander," said Captain Shackelton as he stood and survived the bridge, "Ladies and Gentlemen I will not line fleet command has picked up and incursion into our space the Dragon has returned."

There was a rumble around the bridge and Anson shifted uncomfortably at the news and scanned the tactical plot and saw the marked ships and Anson.

"I will not lie they outnumber us in the number of dropships," Shackelton said meeting each of the bridge officers eyes, "however that is all they have, we have the edge in technology, training and in people, our spirit shall not be broken and we will drive this gecko that claims to be a dragon and show him that this tiger has gained sharper teeth since we last fought."

"Your Empress and your people know we shall do our duty now," Shackelton said, "Let us prepare for action."

There was a nod around the bridge as they looked to one another and set to work with a will knowing what failure would cost their people they would not give in to the tyrants.

    Griffsport, Same time

"Let's go A-Company," yelled Captain Quinlan, "get the lid out get to your Weasel! We need not get to the defensive positions."

Private Alice Reddy came out of her barracks rifle and webbing along with kit bag along with the others in the squad as they piled into the APC that gunned it heading for their assigned position.

    "Nervous?" asked Corporal Tillman.

"Yes Corporal," she said as she shifted her rifle.

"We all are we knew the Dracs would break the city," Tillman said.

"I just wish they could have waited till we had the Warrior," said Alice, "Damn Dracs."

    "Aye damn Dracs," said Tillman.

They settled back into silence as the APC came to a stop and as they set about digging in over the jungle night she heard a sound that came down the line as she settled it in.

It was a song and as she heard it she felt her heart swell and joined in until most of the Brigade was singing.

Soldiers of Griffins Roost, stop your dreaming,
Can't you see their spearpoints gleaming,
    See their warrior pennants streaming,
    To this battle field!

Soldiers of Griffins Roost stand ye steady,
It can not be ever said ye,
For the battle were not ready,
    Griffins Roost never yield!

    From the hills rebounding,
    Let this war cry sounding,
    Summon all at Wolverines Call,
    The mighty force surrounding!

Soldiers of Griffins Roost on to glory,
This will ever be your story,
Keep these burning words before ye,
    Griffins Roost will not yield

She smiled and set back to making herself comfortable in her little area of defence.

”Well,” Jeremy said as he looked at the holo tank, ”nice to see sarah has a taste in music.”

edit A/N: the song is an altered version of March of Harlech The Zulu version.

A View from the Ice 10

Michal felt a bit cold as he watched the display on the holo tank as it projected a view of the Command Centre on Nowy Gdansk as the various officers of his staff and the Armia Krajowa assisted with the excersie.

The chatter of the Ground side command bunker beneath Fort Mocny Michal stood in the chaos as the watchstanders watched the incoming dracs. A sea of calm amongst the chaos since the Dracs came into the system the Armia Krajowa had prepared even though they were heading towards Griffins Roost if they tried to spilt and put some forces on Nowa Gdansk they would get a bloody nose.

He thought to Misha and felt a stab of worry she and her agents were moving heaven and earth to help Old Leopold, Katlyn and Young Leopold in getting people who couldn't fight to the shelters the old, young and infirmed. Misha was among going to go with the infirmed she was six months pregnant after all but she would work to keep the people in the shelters calm.

The Armia Krajowa and by extension Michal were doing what they always did stand there ground. The Armia Krajowa was setting up in the City with the elements of 2nd Armoured to force the dracs to fight on their own ground bring them into the city and make them relive their worst nightmares that the Armia Krajowa brought to them. the 2nd RRF and the Winged Hussars were preparing getting ready to harras any dracs they could make them bleed.

He closed his eyes and he could almost see his soldiers digging in all over the city checking their weapons, preparing their support weapons saying their prayers and performing other rituals. The Verdun crews tended to paint the name of their old tanks on the back he could almost see then downing the last shot before mounting up.

He opened his eyes and looked to Rowecki who was stood stoically nearby as was Park who had been made his point of contact with 2nd Armoured.

"This is it," Michal said, "They are back and they are going straight for the kill like a Mężczyzna Wilk that has seen an unguarded flok of sheep."

"Tak sir," said Rowecki, "Wish we could do more to help the Grifs."

    "As do I," Michal said.

"Still if they divert to land some forces here we will give them a bloody nose," said Rowecki, "Show the Dracs we can't be pushed by the again."

"Tak," said Michal, "Still wish we could send some more support their way."

"As do I," said Park, "This is frustrating my wife is still on the Roost I hope she does as well."

"As do we all my friend," said Michal looking to his friend, "I'm sure she will be safe."

"Sir," said one of the watch officers, "Old Leopold is making his speech to the planet."

They moved to a screen there they saw the old man wearing a simple suit behind a podium with the flag of the Giffins Empire behind him and a small one of there world next to it.

"Citizens of Griffins Empire, People of Nowy Gdansk, Brothers and Sisters," said Old Leopold looking out, "we came to this system slaves who gain their freedom through treaty and after they left we thought that we had traded one master for another when the Griffs landed, however, they bound our wounds and welcomed us into there home and called us family and treated us as such we have become brothers and sisters with them in all but blood."

Michal could see the old man's hands tighten on the podium and he continued in a voice of chipped ice, "Now the slavers have come back lead by a so-called son of a dragon I spit in his face and call him what he is a murderer, a rapist, a slaver and dishonourable self-entitled scum he is a gangster worthy of no respect but we Poles have a long memory and our wrath shall be swift."

The old man brought his fist down on the podium, "The people of Nowy Gdansk shall stand by their brothers on Griffins Roost, we shall shed our blood with them they who we call our brothers and sisters! We shall Drive the Dragon back and this little man will pay for his transgressions against all the people he has wronged! WE SHALL PUSH INTO THE FOUL PIT HE COMES FROM AND THE SINGLE SPARK OF COURAGE HERe WILL LIGHT THE FIRES OF HOPE WHICH WILL LIGHT OUR WAY TO VICTORY!"

There was a rumble as people in the command centre began to cheer and clap and the old man said, "WE WILL STAND BY OUR BROTHERS AND SISTER ON GRIFFINS ROOST AND MARCH ONTO THE END WITH THEM! FOR GRIFFINS EMPIRE, FOR THE MEMORY OF NOWA WARSZAWA!"

Michal could hear the cheering echoing from down the corridor then the song began to play an old one from the old homeworld.

Michal shook his head and turned from the holo tank to his fellow officers of the Armia Krajowa, “Did we really have to let Old Leopold put in an appearance doing that speech I know he is saving for when the dracs do come back.”

Jan shrugs, “tak,” Jan said with a grin, “it was his request as was it was Misha’s to remind you that you need to be back home soon.”

”I know my friend,” Michal said with a tired smile, “the baby is both a blessing and a curse in all her odd food requests and late and early food runs.”

    That made everyone laugh.

Lady Junko Kurita entered the briefing room in her full armor, complete with not only the long tachi worn edge-down across the back of her waist but also an oversized warbow and quiver over her shoulder. She regarded the gathered officers with tight, angry disdain.

"The Dragon," she intoned coldly, "is gravely disappointed in your failure to bring this stubborn backwater to heel."

Then Thanh took off her helmet and grinned. "Griffin's Roost, on the other hand, thanks you very much for your participation in our strategic training exercise, and invites you to partake in the refreshments we have assembled while filing your reports. Those who will be participating in Stage 2, please report to the exercise command post by 0500 for final assignments. And remember, part of this exercise is to remind everyone down here what the stakes really are."

A few minutes later, Jane and Michelle found her.

"Ninja outfits? You two are having way too much fun with this."

"Pot. Kettle. Naginata taller than you are."

"My outfit is absolutely historically authentic." declared Thanh snootily, "Your outfit looks like it came off the set of Ninja Babes Gone Wild."

"Which is why they'll never see us coming!" retorted Jane cheerfully.

"Your DEST units are being electronically simulated via Sarah. There is no actual reason to wear DEST rigs, much less porno knockoffs of them."

"Authenticity breeds inspiration! Also, insert Kipling reference of some sort here. Michelle is sulking because I won our little bet so she has to play along with the outfits."

"I still think you cheated..." grumbled the older and more respectable operative.

"I totally cheated." agreed Jane smugly, "But you can't prove it, so it doesn't count. NINJA VANISH!"

She threw a tiny confetti grenade, and dashed out the door.

"The Dragoons had a fully loaded Monolith in reserve?"

"Uh, warbook is IDing it as Aegis class."

"Aegis class JumpShip?" The commander frowned. That must be something obscure from the Periphery. . .

"Aegis class heavy cruiser, sir. IFF handshake is WDS Alexander. She is maneuvering to cut off the 331rd's DropShips."

"I amend my previous statement -- the Dragoons had a fucking WarShip! in reserve?"

"Warbook ID is positive, sir, and . . . HOLY SHIT! The 331rd's JumpShip just lit up one hell of a transit drive and is accelerating from the Jump Point!"

A View From the Ice 11

The offices was simply furnished for someone who was supposed to be the head of the planetary government and due to retire next year but right now Old Leopold was absolutely livid as he read the report form Griffins Roost that his delegates and Senator had sent with rising anger. Those drań on Pollux were stirring up trouble in the form of a blasted power grab to make themselves kings!

If they wanted to set themselves above everyone they should be ready to go to war because he would not allow the people of Griffins Roost or Nowy Gdansk to be abused in such a fashion! Not by the Dracs or some sons of bitches with some sort of god complex!

He jabbed his thumb on his desk com to his secretary, "Kacper, Proszę get me Michal, my son, Andrey and Katlyn."

"Tak sir," said Kacper, "should I get Misha?"

"Nie," Old Leopold said, "send for her deputy since she just went on maternity leave beside Michal will probably tell her."

"Tak, Sir I'll get on it," said Kacper

Moments later the people requested arrived in the officer Michal in the uniform of the Armia Krajowa with the flag of Griffins Empire just above that of Nowy Gdansk, Young Leopold was in a casual suit his wife and son's and daughters had made him wear having come from the Interior Ministry, Andrey a short stockman who despite his appearance had a sharp legal mind who had become a scavenger back on the old home after the Dracs invaded, Katlyn had the longest to come from the Health and Food Ministry like him she was looking to retire and pass on to her deputy and the Final addition had her face heavily wrap Zuzanna was even more scared than Misha used to be and unlike Misha, she refused to get them removed saying it would help intimidate any Dracs that came into her power.

As he told them what he heard from their Delegates and senators on Nowy Gdansk their faces morphed from shock to outrage fairly quickly as the digested the news.

The first to speak was Michal, "Are they insane?" Michal asked, "The Empress would never let them succeed at this... she would sic that madwoman Jane on them if they really piss her off."

"Tak," said Zuzanna, "she would and I'd probably sit in to take notes."

"That you would," Andrey said looking at Zuzanna then back to Old Leopold, "however by the laws as they exist on Griffins Roost what they are technically doing is highly questionable and bordering on treason going by the founding documents of both the Empire and the previous kingdom."

The younger man shook his head, "The queen can proverbially and literally if it is proven to be treason string them up by their balls."

"Tak," said Young Leopold looking to his father, "What they are doing stinks worse than rotting fish I recommend we speak to our delegates and senators and they form a block with the Empresses Supporters to prevent this."

Old Leopold nodded and looked to Zuzanna expediently and she said, "I can step up our own security detail to make sure these Pollux senators don't try anything illegal with them. I can also ask them to look for any dirt."

"Do the first not the second," Old Leopold said, "the Griffs are our allies it is only a few that are rotten."

Zuzanna nodded and Katlyn said, "There is not a lot I can do however I know some of the people in the DoME Office as well as the College of Medicine back on Griffins Roost I can ask to see if they can do anything but I would not be hopeful."

"Tak do it," Old Leopold said firmly looking to Michal who shrugged, "I can do less than everyone else but if I may make a recommendation. If the Empress calls for allies send both Young Leopold and Andrey," Michal said, "Young Leopold is practically your second and Andrey as the justice minister so it would be a strong show of support."

"Tak," Old Leopold said, "I will speak to our Representative and Senators as well as do many of the things that we spoke of so my son and Andrey go back your bags, pass responsibilities to your deputies and get ready to depart I want you on Griffins Roost as soon as possible."

"Tak sir," they both said and left to make arrangements.

"Zuzanna," Old Leopold said, "Go and see to sending some security with them and sending some extra personnel as temporary security for our senators and representatives."

Zuzanna nodded and left walking quickly and he looked to Michal one of his oldest friends on Nowy Gdansk, "Now for you and Katlyn..."

Before he could finish the door burst open and Rowecki burst in with a worried looking Kasper.

All three of them looked to the panting NCO who looked like he'd run a marathon and then he said three words, "They are here now!"

"What!" Michal said shocked as fear crossed his face, "It's a month too soon!"

"Well sir," Rowecki said, "They are here now and Misha has sent me to drag you three to the hospital right now so sirs and Ma'am we need to move! I have a staff car waiting out front!"

All three of them leapt up grabbed their coats and ran towards the door.

    Three days later. . .

    "Uh, Captain?"

"Given that you're waking me up in the middle of the night and we're not exploding, I assume that we have further developments with this whole, 'Oh, WarShips just grow on trees in the Periphery' situation."

"Yes, sir. Both WarShips maneuvered to retrieve their respective DropShip complements, then maneuvered around each other but did not open fire. They then opened communications, and, ah, Captain Kerensky pretty much spent four hours straight yelling and screaming about some "Not Named" thing that the 331st apparently knows something about? Ultimately, Kerensky calmed down and they switched to encrypted comms that our codebreakers are crying over."

"So both of them pulled out the biggest of all surprise trump cards, but since they both had WarShips, they decided to actually talk things out instead of blowing each other -- and us -- into space debris."

"Yes, until about thirty seconds ago."

"You probably should have opened with that part, Lieutenant!" growled the Captain. "What happened thirty seconds ago?"

    "Well, another WarShip jumped in."

    "Another WarShip."

"Warbook IDs her as the Cameron-class battlecruiser SLS Lady Shandra, but she verbally hailed us as the CSV Invisible Truth."

The Captain sat up abruptly. "Lieutenant, if this is some kind of joke, it is in extremely bad humor despite my previous comment about ComStar having WarShips next. I am not amused."

"Not joking, sir. CSV Invisible Truth, and her Captain was wearing ComStar robes. They're demanding that both other WarShips stand down and immediately accompany them to Terra to meet with the Primus."

"Dear God. Periphery mercenaries and ComStar with WarShips. What next?"

"One last detail, sir. . . SLS Lady Shandra was one of Kerensky's ships."

A few weeks after the budget meeting, Her Majesty, Willis, and Thanh are invited to a private briefing at Majeure Electrique's R&D facility. Since they've done this dance before, they fully expect that the Majeure skunkworks intends to show off an unsolicited proposal of some sort, perhaps a pre-production prototype of those heavy aerodyne gunships that they keep trying to sell Mary on.

What rolls out into the demonstration hangar is a razor-nosed high speed interceptor with large cranked-delta wings, rather reminiscent of the classic Sabres that the Dracs have been deploying by the bucketload but with six preposterously huge fusion drives -- two at the rear of the fuselage and two more on each wing, in symmetrical pods above and below each wing root. Apparently, Majeure Electrique thinks the answer to making the faster interceptor that the military wants is, "All the thrust in Christendom". The boldness of the design is playfully highlighted by classic fighter-style pinup nose art and the name, "L'Audace".

Jackie politely elbows Willis and Thanh, because they're drooling. She is definitely not drooling, because she is absolutely not an adrenaline junkie.

Then someone walks past the interceptor, and jaws drop. Apparently, Periphery Studies ran off with a decimal point or two, because that high-speed interceptor is three thousand tons, not thirty. The company representative confides that this one is actually the result of internal corporate politics -- since the dominant "Team Make It Bigger" is off besieging Mary's receptionist, the minority "Team Make It Faster" stole a march on them.

You're not sure how a three thousand ton "Aerospace Fighter" isn't bigger, but five and a half Gs without even touching overboost is definitely faster.

    Code:
    Cheetah class Escort Gunship

Light Aerodyne Dropship; 3,000 tons; 11/17 movement
    Cost 604.3 million C-bills; BV 22565
    9x Enhanced ER PPC, 2x Gauss Rifle, 6x LRM-20 w/ Artemis, 1x LB 20-X Autocannon, 11x Streak SRM-6 (9 forward, 2 aft), 4x Medium Laser (aft), 15x Anti-Missile System (9 forward, 6 aft)

Specials: Armored 8, Armor Piercing, AMS 15, Missile 6, Swift

When the representative smoothly interjects that this is a fully tested and functional testbed demonstrator, Willis and Thanh practically fall over each other rushing for the courtesy flight suits. Jackie, obviously, perfectly retains her royal grace and dignity while also getting there first.

    Omake: Negotiations

"Tai-sho! We have an unscheduled jump signature at the nadir point! Tonnage, one million tons! Class, unidentified!"

    "What?"

"They are broadcasting in the open!"

"I am Admiral Thanh of the Imperial Griffin Navy. The agreed-upon peace having run its course in the proper manner, the time has come to liberate this world from the greedy, conniving clutches of the overgrown slug which fancies itself a dragon." The Chu-i at the communications console silently pondered the irony that this foreign Admiral had much, much nicer dress armor than even Lord Kurita. Very silently, for Lord Kurita was known to be tremendously proud of his armor and would certainly not be amused at such a comparison.

"WHAT?!?!? That is not possible, the Griffins have neither JumpShips nor Dropships, merely ASFs!"

"DropShips are detaching -- ten Dropships of one-hundred-thousand tons, zero-zero course for the planet! Warning, additional jump signatures at both nadir and zenith points! Nine more of the same ten-collar model JumpShip, and another ten at the zenith point!"

"This must be a trick, the Griffins cannot possibly have twenty JumpShips!"

"Single jump signature at the near-planet pirate point. . . Tonnage, THREE MILLION TONS! Class, WARSHIP!"

The Tai-Sho barely held himself back from slapping his clearly hysterical subordinate. "Absurd!"

"The sensors are reading correctly, Tai-Sho! Emergence signature in excess of three million tons, followed by divergence of twelve DropShips and thirteen incoming drive signatures, twelve closely matching those at the nadir and zenith, one vastly more energetic. That is without doubt a Warship of not less than two million tons, with twelve drop colllars."

    "I...I shall inform Lord Kurita."

    Edit:

<Thanh> I would like to declare that this omake is TOTALLY NOT CANON and I am TOTALLY NOT an Admiral and TOTALLY WILL find a way to stick to ASF piloting no matter what Mom plots. So there!

    Command Deck, HMS Destiny

In the eyes of her proud new plank owner crew, the Destiny was obviously the finest ship in the entire Imperial fleet. Sure, she wasn't nearly as big as the bold new Velociraptors that were just starting to enter service, but she was the very first Defiant class assault DropShip completed to the new Mod 1 standard, and that made her the fastest and most agile vessel in all space. Obviously, the Lightning didn't count because she wasn't in service yet, and absolutely no one would admit to an envious glance towards that building slip.

The Destiny was their ship, so she was the best ship.

Of course, right now the Destiny was very unglamorously docked to one of the Navy's big, fat orbital space stations. Most of her crew, -- including all of the senior officers, were out on liberty or planetside business, leaving only a skeleton watch minding the ship.

Jill Cunningham was the youngest and most junion Ensign on the entire ship, having graduated early from the Aerie *just* in time to draw this crew assignment. This meant she got last pick of watch rotations, and was on duty today while everyone *else* got to go on liberty. She did not mind this in the slightest, because it meant that even though she was only the junior watch stander, she was officially the Officer of the Deck and got to sit in THE CHAIR.

And sitting in THE CHAIR on a beautiful, brand new starship, with all of the controls and screens at her fingertips (even if she wasn't supposed to mess with them *too much*), and at least in theory being delegated all the awesome authority and responsibility of being in (acting) command, was really the most wonderful. . .

. . . the communications screens lit up with FLASH FLASH FLASH - ALL VESSELS - COMBAT ALERT - IMMEDIATE SCRAMBLE - UNSCHEDULED ARRIVAL ZENITH - INTERCEPT

"Red Alert!" She wasn't sure how she managed to not fall out of THE CHAIR and to hide the trembling in her voice. "Bridge to all stations, rig ship for emergency launch! Bridge to engine room, arm maneuvering thrusters!"

    -----

Less than five minutes later, the *Destiny* overrode all mooring clamps in a combat undock, leaving the gangways pressurized in order to instantly blow the ship clear without waiting for a tug. Her lateral maneuvering thrusters lit instantly, followed seconds later by her main drives.

"Conning officer, maximum overboost as soon as we clear the station minimum safety envelope, course for the zenith jump point. Bridge to all hands, secure for thrust, secure for overboost."

Ensign Cunningham paused for a moment at the lack of reply, then remembered that there was actually no one else on the bridge. She reset the helm controls to the captain's console, then frantically paged through the ship systems indicators, making sure all stations were duly reporting secure. As she did so, one of the station's personnell transfer shuttles blasted from the launch bay and raced out towards *Destiny* at its own maximum safe accelleration. . .

. . . and was left very, very behind as the DropShip's brand-new, freshly-tuned, more-racer-than-combatant fusion drives went to almost six-Gs. Take that, Lightning sitting still!

"OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!" shouted a Lieutenant Commander without pants. "CATCH THAT SHIP!"

"I can't, sir, she's pulling five and a half Gs! We're a freaking CARGO SHUTTLE, we don't have the fuel or thrust..."

    "ARRRGH!!"

    OMAKE: SURROUNDED BY. . .

Over the next ten minutes or so, Destiny's course away from the station converged with those of her sisters Valiant, Daring, and Diadem. The four little ships had cut their acceleration slightly slightly in order to make a ragged but serviceable series of rendezvouses, then returned to thrusting all-out for the jump limit.

The console pinged with a priority conference message, and once Ensign Cunningham tapped accept, a split-screen showed Captain Williams (minus his hat) on Daring, Lieutenant Commander Vandy on Diadem (minus her hat and uniform top), and Lieutenant Commander Basala on Valiant (wearing a dress uniform). All of them blinked.

    "Ensign, where's Lieutenant Commander Grady?"

"He was not aboard during the scramble order, sir."

"I see." Captain Williams looked down, clearly checking his console. "Well, the good news is that Fleet Command has confirmed that no, we have not been invaded again. The unidentified jump we were scrambled for was the Free Folk trading jumpship; they weren't broadcasting their usual IFF because their ship is currently shot to pieces. This remains a priority intercept situation, so we're to remain at full thrust until we can rendezvous with Warrior, further outsystem. Our orders are to secure the area and provide immediate assistance to the Free Folk. Argus and Haskell will follow when they can."

The two Lieutenant Commanders nodded, and their split-screens turned off, leaving Cunningham trying not to stare nervously. Captain Williams gave her a reassuring smile. "Relax, Ensign. You've done well getting Destiny scrambled so quickly, especially with the entire squadron short handed. How down are you over there?"

    "Two, sir."

    "Ah, that's not so bad. I'm down four myself. . . "

"No sir, I mean there's two of us. Me and engine tech first class Peters."

The Captain gave a slow, incredulous blink.

"Uh, uh, it's really not that hard, sir." Cunningham realized she was babbling, but wasn't sure how to stop." Easier than Academy shuttles, really, the controls on the Mod-1s are really nice."

"Deep breath, Ensign. Just keep doing what you're doing, and I'll see about transferring someone a little more senior over to you as soon as possible."

    -----

As it turned out, "as soon as possible" meant "not until we rendezvous with Warrior", because although Destiny was the only one of the four to scramble without her CO, none of the Defiants had more than half crew on board, and while the risk of actual combat was low, it wasn't nonexistent enough to allow bringing any of the other three down to a 'combat ineffective' crewing.

In the meantime, Ensign Cunningham and Engine Tech Peters took turns dozing fitfully in their G-couches; there was far too much thrust going on to even think about their actual quarters.

    ----

As for the unfortunate Lieutenant Commander Grady, he found his pants and the rest of his stranded crew, realized that the only people on board his entire ship were its two least experienced crew members, and bitterly regretted that he was technically on duty and could not therefore take to drink.

There is really no worse fate for a Navy captain than watching his ship fly away without him, except perhaps for that and a superior officer cheerfully "suggesting" that this would be a perfect time for him to update all of his paperwork.
