You are not touching this one with a thirty three and a half foot pole.

Jane pops up and hands you a thirty-three foot, six and a half inch pole. She then gleefully dodges your attempts to smack her with said pole. Fortunately, Thanh is willing to back you up, and Jane is very expertly tripped and then smacked by a foam-bladed naginata.

Thanh is best daughter.

That weekend you have a ton of kids over in the palace, because little John is having a birthday and invited every single go kart racer and their families to the party. And the Imperial Guard has set up a massive karting track on the palace grounds winding around all the fountains and gardens for the kids to race around on.

The karting association has taken full advantage of this and has petitioned you to be allowed to bring extra karts with added safety gear for recruitment and the general public to faff about in. You decide to allow it, if they bring some suitable for adults for you and Willis to make use of.

This is, of course, totally WIllis' idea. Your dear hubby is such an incurable adrenaline junkie, unlike you and your absolutely perfect driving record.

You got about an hour warning from the Eldest, but both the Imperial Senate and the Chamber of Delegates are involved in this turd. Legislation is being pushed through by a small but extremely vocal group to eliminate the planetary governments of Griffin’s Roost and Nowy Gdansk and replace them with direct rule from governors appointed by the Imperial Senate and Chamber of Delegates, with no input from the throne.

"The regional governors now have direct control over their territories."

Oh yes, but you bastards don't have a Death Star.

[X]They want a fight? Give them a fight they’ll regret forever.
- [X] Cancelling future elections, eliminating democratic governments, and appointing themselves joint dictators for life is outright treasonous. The Crown must respond both decisively and openly -- and you've already set a precedent for exactly how it goes down from here. "Jane? You get to do the Black Rod thing again."

Just unleashing Janet on them won't solve this entirely (and may in fact cause more problems going by the 'but it would also be a direct interference of the Crown in the judicial system' comment) so better to do this properly.

(In all seriousness, unleashing Janet on them is probably the better option because of the way they're keeping it pseudo-legal, but honestly? I'm *mad* and I want to *smite*, so for once, I'm going with the drama option instead of the 'best' option.)

A View From the Ice 11

The offices was simply furnished for someone who was supposed to be the head of the planetary government and due to retire next year but right now Old Leopold was absolutely livid as he read the report form Griffins Roost that his delegates and Senator had sent with rising anger. Those drań on Pollux were stirring up trouble in the form of a blasted power grab to make themselves kings!

If they wanted to set themselves above everyone they should be ready to go to war because he would not allow the people of Griffins Roost or Nowy Gdansk to be abused in such a fashion! Not by the Dracs or some sons of bitches with some sort of god complex!

He jabbed his thumb on his desk com to his secretary, "Kacper, Proszę get me Michal, my son, Andrey and Katlyn."

"Tak sir," said Kacper, "should I get Misha?"

"Nie," Old Leopold said, "send for her deputy since she just went on maternity leave beside Michal will probably tell her."

"Tak, Sir I'll get on it," said Kacper

Moments later the people requested arrived in the officer Michal in the uniform of the Armia Krajowa with the flag of Griffins Empire just above that of Nowy Gdansk, Young Leopold was in a casual suit his wife and son's and daughters had made him wear having come from the Interior Ministry, Andrey a short stockman who despite his appearance had a sharp legal mind who had become a scavenger back on the old home after the Dracs invaded, Katlyn had the longest to come from the Health and Food Ministry like him she was looking to retire and pass on to her deputy and the Final addition had her face heavily wrap Zuzanna was even more scared than Misha used to be and unlike Misha, she refused to get them removed saying it would help intimidate any Dracs that came into her power.

As he told them what he heard from their Delegates and senators on Nowy Gdansk their faces morphed from shock to outrage fairly quickly as the digested the news.

The first to speak was Michal, "Are they insane?" Michal asked, "The Empress would never let them succeed at this... she would sic that madwoman Jane on them if they really piss her off."

"Tak," said Zuzanna, "she would and I'd probably sit in to take notes."

"That you would," Andrey said looking at Zuzanna then back to Old Leopold, "however by the laws as they exist on Griffins Roost what they are technically doing is highly questionable and bordering on treason going by the founding documents of both the Empire and the previous kingdom."

The younger man shook his head, "The queen can proverbially and literally if it is proven to be treason string them up by their balls."

"Tak," said Young Leopold looking to his father, "What they are doing stinks worse than rotting fish I recommend we speak to our delegates and senators and they form a block with the Empresses Supporters to prevent this."

Old Leopold nodded and looked to Zuzanna expediently and she said, "I can step up our own security detail to make sure these Pollux senators don't try anything illegal with them. I can also ask them to look for any dirt."

"Do the first not the second," Old Leopold said, "the Griffs are our allies it is only a few that are rotten."

Zuzanna nodded and Katlyn said, "There is not a lot I can do however I know some of the people in the DoME Office as well as the College of Medicine back on Griffins Roost I can ask to see if they can do anything but I would not be hopeful."

"Tak do it," Old Leopold said firmly looking to Michal who shrugged, "I can do less than everyone else but if I may make a recommendation. If the Empress calls for allies send both Young Leopold and Andrey," Michal said, "Young Leopold is practically your second and Andrey as the justice minister so it would be a strong show of support."

"Tak," Old Leopold said, "I will speak to our Representative and Senators as well as do many of the things that we spoke of so my son and Andrey go back your bags, pass responsibilities to your deputies and get ready to depart I want you on Griffins Roost as soon as possible."

"Tak sir," they both said and left to make arrangements.

"Zuzanna," Old Leopold said, "Go and see to sending some security with them and sending some extra personnel as temporary security for our senators and representatives."

Zuzanna nodded and left walking quickly and he looked to Michal one of his oldest friends on Nowy Gdansk, "Now for you and Katlyn..."

Before he could finish the door burst open and Rowecki burst in with a worried looking Kasper.

All three of them looked to the panting NCO who looked like he'd run a marathon and then he said three words, "They are here now!"

"What!" Michal said shocked as fear crossed his face, "It's a month too soon!"

"Well sir," Rowecki said, "They are here now and Misha has sent me to drag you three to the hospital right now so sirs and Ma'am we need to move! I have a staff car waiting out front!"

All three of them leapt up grabbed their coats and ran towards the door.

Abolition of planetary governments by governors appointed by the Senate and House of Delegates, specifically excluding the crown from the appointment process, and outlawing of elections? Yeah, no way this is going to fly.

What I don't get is why the hell these idiots think they can get away with this. We unravelled the Gem Conspiracy, tracked down every one of them, put them on trial and executed them for murder, theft and other crimes. We captured, tried and executed the guys who nearly killed Willis and Sarah. These guys are committing what any court in this era would consider full-on treason - what the hell makes these guys think they can get away with this???

I think it's a panic reaction -- they barely managed to get elected even with all the dirty tricks, they're implicated in the corruption scandal and that *will* yank them firmly out of power, and so they're doubling down in the hopes of hanging on to what they have. Apparently, they'd rather die than be removed from the power and privilege they've managed to grab onto, especially since they can (somewhat) argue that their actions aren't *technically* treason from a legal POV.

Omake: Even More Escalation

Three days later. . .

"Uh, Captain?"

"Given that you're waking me up in the middle of the night and we're not exploding, I assume that we have further developments with this whole, 'Oh, WarShips just grow on trees in the Periphery' situation."

"Yes, sir. Both WarShips maneuvered to retrieve their respective DropShip complements, then maneuvered around each other but did not open fire. They then opened communications, and, ah, Captain Kerensky pretty much spent four hours straight yelling and screaming about some "Not Named" thing that the 331st apparently knows something about? Ultimately, Kerensky calmed down and they switched to encrypted comms that our codebreakers are crying over."

"So both of them pulled out the biggest of all surprise trump cards, but since they both had WarShips, they decided to actually talk things out instead of blowing each other -- and us -- into space debris."

"Yes, until about thirty seconds ago."

"You probably should have opened with that part, Lieutenant!" growled the Captain. "What happened thirty seconds ago?"

"Well, another WarShip jumped in."

"Another WarShip."

"Warbook IDs her as the Cameron-class battlecruiser SLS Lady Shandra, but she verbally hailed us as the CSV Invisible Truth."

The Captain sat up abruptly. "Lieutenant, if this is some kind of joke, it is in extremely bad humor despite my previous comment about ComStar having WarShips next. I am not amused."

"Not joking, sir. CSV Invisible Truth, and her Captain was wearing ComStar robes. They're demanding that both other WarShips stand down and immediately accompany them to Terra to meet with the Primus."

"Dear God. Periphery mercenaries and ComStar with WarShips. What next?"

"One last detail, sir. . . SLS Lady Shandra was one of Kerensky's ships."

So how long until the backup both sides called for via their onboard HPG's arrives to make the ComStar ship rethink it's ability to force the two groups to do anything?

ComStar isn't really trying to force either side to do anything; they're opening diplomatic relations, only revealing their own WarShip to demonstrate that, unlike the Great Houses, they are an actual peer to. . . whatever unknown star nations the Dragoons and the 331st must obviously be working for.

The entire inner sphere would be losing its shit about now as they watch this situation develop and get worse and worse. The Blakist's are crying in their cereal over this but who care's about them.

Oh, absolutely. This is pretty much the most chaotic possible way for us to "come out" in the Inner Sphere, short of pulling an Oprah style WarShip giveaway in the Periphery.
