A View From the Ice 8

Michal's eyes narrowed as he read the reports that his people on Griffins Roost it soured the sweet taste he had recently in his mouth at his promotion to Generał dywizji of the Armia Krajowa on Nowy Gdansk. He looked to see an equally hard look on Misha's face and that of Starszy chorąży sztabowy Rowecki who had an intent look in his eyes.

Added into their little group was his executive officer Kaptain Jan Wojtek who was the commander of the Winged Hussars. He was a tall man who carried a cavalry sabre he had commissioned for the role and had been one of the few tank commanders who had survived through stupidly good luck though he had been captured during the Dracs initial steam roller.

"These attacks on our brothers and sisters on Griffins Roost," he said as he placed the pad down on the desk, "Will not stand."

Misha nodded slowly, "In my role as head of Agencja Bezpieczeństwa Wewnętrznego and my seat on the council I agree with you. Old Leapold has already sent an offer to assist in any way we can."

"Good," Michal said and looked to Jan and Rowecki, "what can we send from our side and whom?"

"Not much from the Hussars," Jan said with a frown, "I'm still not happy with their level of training but I can spare a lanca if possible should the Griffs ask."

Jan leaned back, "Though deploying them to a city is not something I'd like given the amount of damage they could do in a friendly city."

"In terms of our side," Rowecki said, "I can think of two platoons we could deploy bez namysłu."

"Go on," Michal said.

"Well we can deploy Alfa Recon Platoon of Pierwszy company and Beta Recon Platoon of Druga Company," Rowecki said.

Michal paused bringing the people who were in those platoons to mind and the said, "You essentially recommending to send people trained by Jakub and the Ona Diabeł to assist in this?"

"tak sir," Rowecki said

He leaned back and looked to Jan and Misha, "Thoughts on Rowecki's recommendation?"

"Sending Jakub I agree with," said Jan, "However sending Ona may not be wise given how brutal she can be."

"She served with Jakub," said Misha, "What does he say about her?"

"All he said to me was point her at a target and it will be accomplished," said Michal, "Works with what I've seen of her. She can be quite brutal if required but can also act as a scalpel as well."

"True," Jan said with a nod, "though something in her did break after the invasion. I mean there is a reason the Dracs called her the Oni's Bride, I'm amazed they were able to take her and get her here. That's not even counting Jakub's own exploits and the fact we got him here is a godsend even if he scares the Griffs every now and then."

"One of the whims of fate," Michal said, "Anyway I'll pass to Old Leopold the offer to the Griffs to send Alfa Recon Platoon of Pierwszy company and Beta Recon Platoon of Druga Company along with a lanca of Winged Hussars as a first response if asked for as well as more aid if required from the Armia Krajowa."

They all nodded and Misha said, "I've also offered my own agents to help when I spoke to Old Leopold. They likely won't be as good as the Griffs own people but more eyes never hurt."

"Good," said Michal, "I'll pass my own recommendations to Old Leopold at the emergency meeting in an hour."

They all nodded. Time to help the people who saved them.

---

Jakub sat with his platoon as they went over the briefing. Everyone had been moved around since the Hussars were formed, except the core of his recon platoon were some of the best the Armia Krajowa had to offer in terms of impromptu special operations as well as field reconnaissance.

He looked at the notes on this gang and grimaced. The fact the Bratva had military hardware made things interesting, but still all things being relative this would be an interesting job.

"If we get the go-ahead," Jakub said looking at Porucznik Anka, "We need information. I recommend we work with the Griffs and as soon as we identify key targets to the Bratva infrastructure and leadership, as well as weapon stores, we go in hard and fast and take no prisoners."

"Are you sure that is wise Plutonowy?" Anka asked, "this is a civilian area after all so it could cause issues with the Griffs."

"Yes Ma'am. They have military hardware and have shown they aren't afraid to use it," Jakub said, "We can't afford to play nice with them. I imagine Ona is saying the same thing to her unit but as it stands right now these people rocketed themselves from criminals to terrorists fairly quickly. Niceties are wasted on them."

Everyone in the platoons briefing room nodded and Anka said, "I know but I need to play devils, advocate."

"I know Ma'am," Jakub said, "But we need to break this group hard and fast... if we get the go-ahead from the Griffs to assist, that is."

"Still up in the air Plutonowy," Anka said, "Right now we are going over the briefing. If we are given the go-ahead I'm letting you off the leash."

Jakub gave a smile that didn't reach his eyes, "I guess that means I and Ona get to show this Bratva skurwiel why the dracs feared us back home?"

Anka gave a smile almost as cool as their home, "Tak, though do remember that this is a friendly world."

"Oh we will," Jakub said with a smile that was some how colder than Anka's and the meeting went on.

---

Misha and Michal sat in their house feeling drained. They had sent personal messages of condolence to Jake, Harry and other friends they made on Griffins Roost and had brought on a general depression within Nowy Gdansk. What aid that could be prepared was being sent out on the next shipment along with hopefully the elements of the Armia Krajowa and the asserts of the Agencja Bezpieczeństwa Wewnętrznego.

"Hopefully we can do some good," Misha said, "You know Katlyn has offered to travel to Griffins Roost with a medical teams to help despite her Council position."

"Tak, I heard," Michal said, "just like her to jump in and help."

"Still Jake and Harry," said Misha, "and Parks youngest son in a coma."

Michal's eyes went hard, "Tak, man was beside himself when he found out he even put in a request to return home to his wife and his two other children."

Misha shook her head sadly, "Caught in a crossfire in a Bratva Robbery as he was depositing money from his bakery. Bratva pieprzony draniu."

"Tak," Misha said softly, "Still they will pay."

"That they will," Michal said.

Jakub's Night Out

The night was dark as Jakub and his squad stalked it's prey. Since they had arrived on Griffins Roost they had had a bit of a hard time getting used to the heat but they had persevered. Now they waited. Intelligence had found this underboss who had some of the old miltia weapons and had been responsible for several major robberies.

Time for him to meet the devil, they had watched as he went into a private bar that was now known to be a Bratva Hideout and store. Alfa Platoon had been given the job of seeing to this piece of human odpadki.

His squad stacked up at the door and he got the confirmation - two clicks over the comms - that Anka had set up at the rear door. He was dressed casually as he got out of the car he and his squad had parked close by while they waited inside the van.

He walked up to the bored-looking bouncer who was smoking and gave him a look as he approached, "What do you want?"

"My van broke down. Can I use your landline? My phone has no signal," Jakub asked as he approached.

"No you can't," he said as the man moved towards taking him out of pickup of the camera near the door, "I think you should leave if you know whats..."

Before he could finish the sentence Jakub punched I'm in the gut and then his hand dropped smoothly and in one quick motion rammed his knife up under the man's jaw as he doubled over, killing him.

Over the platoons comm net, Jakub said as he wiped the knife on the dead mans cloths, "Doorman down moving to Alfa stage."

Jakub quickly donned the armoured combat jacket and helmet his squad handed to him along with his rifle

---

Oleg looked out over the gathered members who were drinking and laughing and he grinned. Since they had gotten the weapons life was looking good for all levels of the Bratva.

Hell the places he'd hit had turned over quite a profit and it was only looking up. The Pigs couldn't even hope to touch them and the money was just pouring in. He turned to the man next to him smiling and opened his mouth.

He never even finished that thought as the wall behind him exploded showering him in shrapnel killing him and the man he was about to speak to along with several others as the Armia Krajowa lead by Anka's squad entered from one side and while they were looking that way Jakub's squad blew out the front door.

They rushed in dropping the nearest Bratva Soliders with well placed shots. Several of the quicker Bratva dived into cover and tried to return fire while others dropped like puppets with their strings cut as they were taken down.

The survivours were caught in the cross fire and quickly cut down and both squads quickly linked up as they moved towards that basement door.

Jakub slamed into the wall with one of his people, a young woman who'd survived the worst the Dracs could throw at her, behind him. Jakub threw the door open and the woman tossed a grenade down which was followed by several more from the rest of the squad. They waited until the grenades went off and then charged down with Jakub leading the way.

They found several dead men and two who were still breathing through luck more than good management. A pistol shot rang out and he saw their target a bloated piece of odpadki if he ever saw one who was covered in blood and seemed to have broken arm.

How he was still standing Jakub didn't know but he rushed the bastard before he could get another shot off shoulder checking him and sending him stumbling back.

Before he could recover he delivered a calculated butt stroke to the man's head knocking him out and hopefully not killing him.

"How the hell was he still alive," asked the woman who had entered the basement.

"Fluke of ballistics most likely," said Jakub as he looked at the woman and the two other men, "Starszy szeregowy sweep this basement for any intel and see if there are any weapons stored down here."

"Tak," they said as they began to sweep through the woman dropped to a knee to check the two wounded for weapons and intel as well as to treat them.

"Porucznik," Jakub said over the comms, "Underboss secure beginning sweep."

"Roger that," Anka said, "We secured some of the side rooms found a number of drugs and a few guns. Let me know what you find."

"Tak, ma'am," Jakub said.

After the sweep the sun began to rise, they came away with a good haul for intel to go over and the police, SWAT and Paramedics followed on in. So most of the survivors could be handed over and treated, while they took the underboss to intel along with recovered document and weapons.

Turn 33 - All Around Me Are Familiar Faces

Despite all the garbage going on with the Bratva, some things can still make you smile.

Like Thanh thinking she got one over on you by waiting until after she married her girlfriend in a civil ceremony in a small town on Pollux to tell you she had found somebody. She really thought she’d gotten out of having a proper big wedding.

Poor dear.

You let her keep that illusion for precisely 24 hours, then demonstrated to your darling tomboy of a daughter that old age and treachery beats youth and enthusiasm every time.

She tried to deploy Pout, it utterly failed. You deployed Mom Face, it was Super Effective.

Petra had, evidently, warned Thanh that there was no way they were getting away without a big wedding. Smart girl, you’d already felt quite approving of her, and that just solidified the sense that she had, well, sense.

So now there was a proper wedding on the horizon and Thanh was looking suitably chastened. It’s good to be Mom. And with Iron Wombs you won’t be deprived of grandbabies either.

Jeremy has been placed in command of his own rump company of Trooper Mechs. AFGE command wants to set the unit up as a combined company, rather than an all Trooper unit, with a lance of Ambush II and a lance of Shortbow mechs. To do so, you will need to procure a lance each of those mech types, together they will form a Light Fire Company. You would need to either build a Shortbow factory or convert an existing factory.

[]Agreewould create a syncretic unit named ‘Light Fire Company’ consisting of 1 Lance Trooper, 1 Lance Ambush II and 1 Lance Shortbow with HP = 176, A/D = 139 and a +3 bonus to Initiative
[]DisagreeNo change

To that end, the population and infrastructure on Nowy Gdansk is now sufficient to support the production of armored fighting vehicles, although not yet sufficient to build more advanced factories for ASFs, Battlemechs, or Dropships.

Neither of the twins won the championship last year, although it was close. Smirky had missed the Chase completely and is still very salty about it. However he is getting a bit of sympathy this year as his younger brother was killed in the line of duty during a Bratva bank robbery. His reaction upon learning of this was caught on camera during an interview.

Needless to say, he might still be seen as a ‘black hat’ racer, but him breaking down and having to cut short an interview resonated strongly. He actually managed to win the first race after this, surprisingly cleanly for him.

The twins are still bouncing from relationship to relationship and do not seem all that inclined to settle down anytime soon. They seem to be following the ‘Aunt Janet’ school of relationships, with all the drama that entails.

Sarah has rather shyly introduced you to her boyfriend from Griffin’s Roost University, a fellow History major who specializes in pre-space military history focusing on the late Middle Ages and Renaissance period. Now you know how she was inspired to come up with that silly Holy Griffin Empress business.

You’ve had a background check discretely run on young Mr Bartalozzi, as he’s so very Italian it makes you taste pasta just being in his vicinity. But he very much seems to be on the up and up.

The Free Folk jumpship appears again rather ahead of schedule with concerning news, evidently the Kuritans have taken over another planet two jumps out from Griffin’s Roost. The jumpship appears to be rather more battered than it had before, according to Sarah. That is indirectly confirmed when they ask if you have any standard aerospace armor plating available in specific sizes for patch work, as well as if you would be willing to sell any ASFs to replace their losses.

You have 6 flights of the old Falcon ASFs still in use by the AeroTraining Wing, they would need to be replaced with newer birds but it would enable you to make the sale and strengthen relations with these wandering folk.

[]Make the SaleLose 1 flight of Falcon ASFs from AeroTraining Wing, gain 2 rolls on the Trade Goods table with a bonus.
[]DeclineGain 1 roll on the Trade Goods table with a penalty

On that note, Lee Aerospace and the Royal Griffin AeroSpaceWerk have approached the Crown with some proposals.

From Lee Aerospace a replacement for the venerable Falcon. Avoiding the use of advanced technology, apart from the drive itself, the Falcon II shares the same name and armament layout as the older ASF, but literally nothing else is even remotely the same. It is significantly faster and has twice the fuel load of the older bird, making it a quite capable combatant in its own light.

Meanwhile the Royal Griffin AeroSpaceWerk has completed initial testing of a massive upgrade package for the Roc dubbed the Roc II. This package takes everything that was terrifying about the original Roc and somehow manages to make it scarier. Building upon work carried out at the Aerie the new platform introduces the rather frightening Artemis IV system to help improve the guidance of the LRM-20 rack in the nose, replaces the conventional 185mm autocannon with a longer-barreled LB-20X version, swaps the 8cm lasers for a pair of Enhanced Extended-Range PPCs, and even upgrades the tail 5cm lasers to pulse variants. A half ton more fuel is just a rather small cherry on top of a very sweet cake indeed. The only fly in the ointment is that this upgrade is going to be expensive considering just how many Rocs are in service.

Brace yourself… The upgrade is going to cost 26,460.

Then the elephant in the room… the situation with the Bratva.

There has been an enormous amount of progress already this year. The newly reinforced Special Branch in conjunction with aerial overwatch from the SH-1B battalion, the seconded units from Nowy Gdansk, and very aggressive policing has reaped a terrifying toll on the thugs who make up the ‘street’ level of the Bratva.

You’ve only taken down a small number of the lower level ‘thief in law’ types, but they are being interrogated extremely vigorously.

There are still regular attacks, with police and first responders being targeted by snipers and patrols being ambushed with heavy weapons, but the intensity is down significantly as you’ve managed to take a serious portion of their forces down… hard.

The Eldest has come to you requesting permission to lead the Great Hunters on a Grand Hunt against the Bratva. This would be seriously terrifying for the organization, but would place the Eldest and the Great Hunters at serious risk from the heavy weapons that the Bratva have been deploying against tigers.

You let her keep that illusion for precisely 24 hours, then demonstrated to your darling tomboy of a daughter that old age and treachery beats youth and enthusiasm every time.

"But we're already married!"

"So were Willis and I, dear. Granted, we didn't flat out elope, but we did have a nice private ceremony for family and close friends only. That really doesn't matter at all as far as 'state ceremony' is concerned."

"But *Jeremy* is the Crown Prince, not me!"

"Here's a nice executive summary of the legal precedents and traditions governing royal marriages, indexed by degree of consanguinity to the throne."

"MOMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!"

[X] Agree. would create a syncretic unit named ‘Light Fire Company’ consisting of 1 Lance Trooper, 1 Lance Ambush II and 1 Lance Shortbow with HP = 176, A/D = 139 and a +3 bonus to Initiative

At the very least, it's worth seeing if this combined company concept works out as well in field trials as it does in theory.

Sarah has rather shyly introduced you to her boyfriend from Griffin’s Roost University, a fellow History major who specializes in pre-space military history focusing on the late Middle Ages and Renaissance period. Now you know how she was inspired to come up with that silly Holy Griffin Empress business.

Sarah is officially the WORST DAUGHTER EVER for not just proposing the "Holy Griffin Empress" business, but somehow recruiting Janet, Bridget, Jane, and Michelle to enthusiastically lobby for it.

[X] Make the Sale. Lose 1 flight of Falcon ASFs from AeroTraining Wing, gain 2 rolls on the Trade Goods table with a bonus.

It doesn't violate our little armistice with the Dracs, they've done us a solid with this valuable intelligence, and the sale is a fair deal in and of itself.

[X] Falcon II Training ASF
[X] Roc II

Quality over quantity is definitely how we roll in ASFs. Also, this goes well with our Sneaky Mom Plan of sticking Thanh in the biggest, baddest, most heavily protected ASF in human history.

[X] Write-In Compromise:

You want the Eldest to make an educated decision about the risks the big Tigers are taking, so you suggest that he and the Great Hunters participate in a full-scale urban combat training exercise against Griffin's Roost infantry. There's a difference between intellectually knowing that SRMs and other portable weapons can harm them, and actually being in closely-simulated battle where they can actually experience how effective their chosen tactics are or aren't against such equipment.

Worth seeing how it works out. We'll have to build a factory for Shortbow, but we can reduce orbital factory production now, so we should have the action free

[X] Make the Sale

They're effectively our scouts now, lets try to help make sure they don't die (and also keep relations good and get possibly helpful things)

[X] Falcon II Training

They may not get used in combat often, but if they do, better they be effective. Another thing that'll need a factory built this turn, we'll want that training unit back up and running as soon as we can get it.

[X] Roc II

Super fighters are a lot better logistically. We'll probably need more Ferro-Aluminum soon with this upgrade, but it's not like we're currently in a real buildup of most fighter classes.

[X] Cry Havoc! And Let Slip The Tigers Of War!

I'm going to trust him, and hope even if he dies it doesn't cause too big an issue (this is something he's requesting) if something goes wrong. I will admit to being least confident in this choice, but it is what I'm going with.

Turn 33 - Bright And Early For Their Daily Races

The Special Branch and the Royal Grifftiger Mounted Police manage to make a break in the case against the Bratva, tracking several of the thugs with the help of the Great Hunters back to a large warehouse complex in the roughest section of Griffsport.

Almost before the reports make it back to HQ the Great Hunters, led personally by the Eldest, are assaulting the compound. You’d never considered, even with all your experience with Sekhmet and watching the tigers deal with deathapotamusaurus herds, just how terrifying an entire pack of ancient and gargantuan tigers actually is.

Industrial structures designed to last for centuries are no match for enraged 150 to 200 short ton tigers in a killing rampage. The roofs collapse, crushing the Bratva underneath, while the tigers themselves tear through those thugs who tried to fight back like a scene out of a kaiju movie.

There are no survivors amongst the Bratva in their headquarters. The Eldest had arranged for tanks of inferno gel, somehow doing this under everybody’s collective nose, and the Great Hunters were sufficiently canny and capable to dump out their contents over the wreckage and jump back before getting burned.

The fires burned for a week. Fire crews had all they could handle just holding a fire line against the inferno, no effort was made to enter into the area for rescues. By the time the flames burned out the block of warehouses looked like the aftermath of a nuclear strike.

After a few weeks there is a collective sigh of relief when no further attacks materialize. The Great Hunters and the Eldest require quite a bit of medical care, the Bratva had not gone down quietly and all of them had taken serious hits, but not even an SRM is capable of outright killing a Great Hunter, and the Eldest had tanked multiple SRMs. The wounds look horrifying, but the Eldest writes them off as ‘a less than perfect Hunt, I’ll heal.’

The Free Folk pay for the four obsolete Falcons with a load of exceptionally valuable gemstones along with detailed scans of the system the Dracs had seized, which they had in their catalog as ‘NZ-187b’ since they’d never been in contact with the inhabitants of the lone habitable planet there. All the Free Folk know about it is that it is a rather pleasant looking place dominated by massive rolling grasslands and prairies, but that the colonists had somehow lost all of their technology and had regressed to a near medieval level of subsistence.

They also turn over star charts of the Nowa Warszawa system from their archives. The system is also a jump away. It has one inhabited planet and two habitable planets total, with extensive asteroid belts and a single Super Jupiter. According to the Free Folk there was an abandoned and non-functional Recharge Station at the Zenith point that appeared to have been part of an SLDF outpost, but the Free Folk had never found any actual artifacts or gear, simply an empty and nearly destroyed station that is far beyond being salvageable.

There is further commercial trade with the Free Folk which results in increased economic activity across the system, boosting GDP slightly.

Jeremy is quite pleased with his first command, and sends you a personal note in which he looks forward to testing out the combined company in training exercises once the mech’s are built. You discover from that that this organizational plan was one of his and Alita’s Senior Projects for their Advanced Tactics class and he’s tickled pink that you approved it without knowing he was behind it.

Clever kid, already thinking like that. You approve! Plus… grandbabies!

The twins are 9 races into the season, both have won one race and have finished in the top 5 together in 7 of the 9 races, with the two exceptions seeing one or the other finishing ‘only’ in the top 10. Smirky has also won a race and, while he’s still exceptionally aggressive, he doesn’t seem as prone to deliberate feuding. Most of his crew are still jerks to everybody else in the pit lane, but you can’t have everything.

Thanh continues to pout right up to the moment the wedding itself takes place, at which point she learns just how weddings make most people feel once they actually happen.

At the reception, of course, you have to put up a slide show of Thanh’s greatest Tomboy Hits growing up, leading to an anguished wail of “MOM!” from your darling daughter. Really, try to deprive dear old mom of a wedding and then think you’ll get away without embarrassment? Your daughter is far too optimistic.

Besides, it’s not like you included any of the really embarrassing pictures, now is it.

Sarah and Tony Bartalozzi are still very cute together, although he’s still far too Italian. You forgive him for that when he cooks up some homemade lasagna that is better than anything the Palace cooks had managed in all your years living there.

Of course the two of them are excitedly chattering away about Guelphs and Neo-Guelphs and White Guelphs and Black Guelphs and Ghibellites and… you completely lose track of the entire conversation very early on. You didn’t bore them with economic theory, after all… so why are they torturing you with Renaissance Italian factions that you couldn’t keep straight when you were in school? You passed History!

Parliament comes through with an interesting proposal to address the economic challenges facing the Empire, especially in light of the aftermath of the Bratva situation.

They are proposing the following:
  • Empire Wide Tax Rate dropped by 2% for 10 years
  • The funds that would have otherwise been raised by the tax rate are invested in the economy
    • +2% GDP on Nowy Gdansk, GIAB, +1% GDP on Griffin’s Roost
    • +10 Imperial Economic Rating
    • +5 Econ Rating Nowy Gdansk, +10 Econ Rating GIAB, +10 Econ Rating Griffin’s Roost
  • Extensive Economic Incentive Spending - encourage increased market activity
    • +10000 Interior Upkeep
    • For 10 years
      • +10% GDP Nowy Gdansk
      • +25% GDP GIAB

The two percent tax rate decrease hurts, but we're in pretty good shape for approval to help bring that up, and there's a lot of GDP growth in there (and miscellaneous ratings)
