That book had a nice analysis of why the Deluge happened, hint-hint, it was because your oligarchy was too greedy and fucked over the entire country, their thuggish hereditary cronyism forced the expansion of serfdom, created more unrest and ultimately led to all those Cossack rebellions and you being too weak to defend yourselves against the deluge and the partitions.

As to the Cossacks, well, their religion was left in tact, they were mostly left to follow their traditions and were better off than the serfs in both Poland and Russia.
