Does the Griffin's Roost legal system have restrictions on Cool and Unusual Punishment?

Jane waves Magic Bushido Hands and informs you that as a totally law-abiding Agent of the Crown, of course she wouldn't be subjecting foreign terrorists to Cool and Unusual Punishment if there were laws against it.

Turn 24 - I Love You...

“And that’s not even the worst of it, she’s just using that on those stuck in those little booths down here.” Harry continues, still looking quite distressed.

“For those she’s stuck up in the sensory deprivation chamber she is doing something far worse.”

You share a glance with Janet.

This played on an infinite loop” he replies, setting out another recorder and pressing play.

You share another glance with Janet, then look back at Harry.

“That was just for the first couple of days. Then she got truly vicious.” he explains seriously, looking seriously disturbed.

“What other musical atrocity from the past did she dig up?” you ask with a sigh.

This, Your Majesty” he replies, playing another track.

The serious mood lasts for several more seconds, before Harry cracks first and starts laughing, Janet and you join him moments later.

“This was her clever plan?”

“It was, and it’s bloody brilliant. The areas are completely soundproofed and it is obviously driving the Dracs completely and totally mad. She’s already dug up what she’s planning on using for the finale for the sensory-deprivation cases, who are the ones who’ve been the closest to cracking. She’s using the Astley to soften up the next inductees into sensory-deprivation madness.” Harry explains.

“Don’t tell me…”

“No, it’s far worse, especially for a native Japanese speaker.” he says with an evil grin.

“Oh?”

“Have you ever heard about anime? She found an archive of old anime songs.” he replies, setting out another data file.

Like this”.

You can’t stop laughing for several minutes straight.

It takes you a short while to calm yourself enough to properly assume a Serious Expression and you summon Jane for an Important Meeting.

She shows up, zipping up the sneak suit while she enters.

“I am very disappointed in you, Ms DiGriz.” you say seriously. “I sent you to effectively interrogate the prisoners, provided you with a highly elevated budget, and now I find out that your method involves certain songs.”

You hold her gaze for a moment, then just as she’s opening her mouth to respond.

“I am disappointed that you failed to include the most effective interrogation song ever. In your repertoire.” you manage to say that with a perfectly straight face as you press play.

The expression on her face is priceless.

Several days later you get word from the geology department at Griffin’s Roost University. There are growing signs of a pending seismic event on the island of Griffsport, as it appears that the central volcano is awakening. They are detecting lava movement and a rising hot spot. According to the geologists the type of eruption is what is known as a ‘Hawaiian’ type, based on the evidence from previous eruptions, so it shouldn’t be all that dangerous, although it will be spectacular.

They are requesting that a full seismic monitoring station be constructed near the caldera of the volcano to monitor conditions.

[] Approve - This will cost 25,000 up front and increase upkeep by 1000. When the eruption occurs, this will give plenty of early warning preventing issues at that time as well as permitting some truly spectacular imagery of the event, giving a one time 3% GDP boost.

[] Disapprove for now - we need the money this turn, we can build this later (note, this decision will recur until the eruption happens, but with decreasing GDP boost rewards each time it is not approved)

The Rapid Reaction Force is in the news again, but you aren’t sure if this is a good or bad thing. They’ve finally finished up their training exercises, which is a good thing, but they’ve put in a request for a rather… risque… insignia.

Featuring Jane (of course) wearing a teeny tiny camouflage bikini, a hovercraft pilots helmet, an old-style bomber jacket, and a pair of tanker boots posing in front of the heraldic griffon that is the symbol of the AFGR. It’s not showing a single thing that should be kept hidden, but still… prudes may object.

[] Go for it, the RRF is the ‘high speed low drag’ crew of risk-takers and Snake-breakers, they’ve earned the right to be a bit rowdy.

[] Seriously… Seriously? NO, put some clothes on Jane!

B...but I like those songs!

(Seriously, My Heart Will Go On is a tremendously beautiful song, it just got terribly overused on music radio after the movie.)

-[X] One caveat, though: For every day that Jane doesn't succeed in her current *classified* mission, a new piece of clothing has to be added to cover her up.

Tell Jane about said caveat as motivation for additional atrocities against the DEST prisoners.

And I agree with ShadowArxxy about 'My Heart Will Go On' - it's a lovely song but it was played to fucking death!

Turn 24 - See Jane. See Jane Sing. Sing Jane Sing

You look at the proposed artwork.

You look at Willis.

You look at the artwork.

You start laughing.

You honestly liked Jane, she was… fun. Sekhmet was laughing in her own feline way as the giant cat shook her head.

A few taps on the translation board… ‘We need to find a cat to adopt that girl.’

You laugh even harder at that, nodding to the sentiment.

You decide to counter-troll your favorite Throne Agent. You issue orders approving the proposed insignia but with a caveat that for every day over a week that Jane fails to complete her Top Secret Mission she will be required to be painted with one more article of clothing.

It seemed funny at the time.

But when a day later you get a call from Harry that the first of the DEST commandos had been broken and was talking - and Jane promptly declares that since she finished 6 days early she gets to take 6 pieces of clothing off- you feel far less clever.

A rather hasty “NO YOU DON’T” response is the best you can manage, before the updated icon arrives in your mailbox featuring Jane, au natural apart from the helmet and boots, posing in such a way that absolutely nothing was visible.

You still veto the modification. The original insignia was about the most risque you were willing to go in this case.

At least your daughters aren’t such wild children as to do something like this. You call Jane into your office and give her the Look of Disappointed Mom.

Then proceed to lecture her on setting a good example for your daughters. Which gives you the quiet amusement to see her squirming under your ‘reasonable’ tone. Yup, you’ve perfected Mom Voice.

Once this would have disturbed you. Now you are just quite glad that you can make use of the skill you’d learned from ba. You still miss ba, but looking back you valued the lessons you’d learned from her.

Jake shows up just as you finish your lecture and rescues your favorite throne agent… for now.

You totally hadn’t conspired with Thanh to pretend that she hadn’t gotten the birds and bees talk before assigning the duty to Jane to ‘prove that you can adult’.

Thanh had promised to record it, you were sure it would be epic.

Totally Willis’ idea.

But Jake does have important news for you. The Lords are pushing some legislation while the Commons is deadlocked on the question with most there opposing it but not enough to table it completely.

The question comes down to bank regulations, specifically as related to certain types of fraud related to securities and investments. The details are very technical, but it narrows down to the Lord’s wanting to tighten up some of the language to make it more difficult for banks to claim immunity from civil suit following a fraud situation. The current regulations are quite solid in terms of holding the actual fraudulent actors responsible and renumenating their victims, but the banks which are involved in the transactions are very often able to dodge all culpability, even if agents of the bank should have known about the fraudulent behavior yet failed to properly report it. It all comes down to the language of the statutes themselves, which as they currently stand have been interpreted by the courts as giving banks immunity so long as they cooperate with law enforcement after the fact.

What the Lords wishes to do is to restrict that immunity to situations where the bank acted in good faith throughout, otherwise the banks would be exposed to civil liability proportional to the adjudicated level of bank responsibility for enabling the fraud.

The banks argue that the existing regulations already adequately make whole the victims, further that the existing regulations are confusing about which bank employees are mandatory reporters of these very technical and specific regulatory issues that oftentimes are only detectable after the fact. Thus it would be exceptionally difficult and wholly subjective as to whether or not a given bank had acted in good or bad faith in any given situation.

"Jane, the fact that you're *literally* a sexy secret agent who helped catch the people who put their dad and sister in comas, plus your age, means my daughters now totally idolize you. I will be very unhappy if this results in reckless shenanigans."

Of course, she definitely doesn't miss that you didn't say no shenanigans.
