United States Biden administration policies and actions - megathread

Oh, lovely. They've sent me a mo-ron.
Yeah, that seems pretty optimistic, so I went and looked for the Morning Consult article, and here's what they state:

"A $1,400 check would allow 22.6 million adults to pay their expenses for at least four and a half months without incurring additional debt or eating further into their depleted savings, assuming that they maintain income from work and unemployment benefits."

So they're assuming that those 22.6 million people are either still working or getting unemployment benefits.
Like hell they are. The coof and the riots left many out of a job.

True. Honestly I think that the statement is pretty misleading.

'1,400 dollars will ensure that people still working or getting unemployment will make it to july' is a statement that doesn't actually tell us how much 1400 dollars will help the other categories of people.

The iced up wind turbines causing rolling blackouts in Kansas and Oklahoma are probably making some people reconsider making that a primary pillar of grid generation. And it's not like those turbines are wrong to have, but you can't rely on that for regular generation at time of need.

They're not wrong but never put your eggs in one basket. Diversify your power sources and don't shut down a keystone pipeline when it ensures energy independency.

That's if the powerful tornadoes don't carry them to Oz

And what are earmarks in this context?
It's when you pass a law that states it's for one thing, but has a bunch of side money hidden in for unrelated projects.

Like, let's pass a healthcare bill...but throw in a couple billion here for this group who helped us promote it.

Often times they aren't even related.

You could for example see someone passing a law to make marijuana legal nationwide. But in there they have a billion for planned parenthood, some subsidies for solar energy. Maybe some climate change groups can get some money too.

So, earmarks are riders which involve spending/giving money to specified recipients?
Bringing such a thing IMO stinks.

The classic example of ridiculous pork earmarks is the Gavina Island Bridge. Said island has a population of 50 people and a small airport for dealing with the surrounding islands, plus a ferry capable of readily carrying cars that services them. A bridge to Gavina needs to be longer than the Golden Gate Bridge and high enough for container ships to go under, and was earmarked for almost 400 million dollars, for 50 people.

Now that's not the real earmark pork. The bridge itself was canceled after much debate over several years. But congress had also earmarked 25 million for a highway to connect to the bridge, and because it was an earmark, that money had to be spent on the highway, funds auto-allocated to the construction company.

Result: There is a major highway in Alaska that goes for many miles with no exits or turnoffs, then suddenly dead-ends at the seashore where it was supposed to connect to a bridge that will never exist. Said highway was built long after the bridge was canceled, because of earmarks to the highway construction company.

1 - thanks for 'splaining - now I'll know :);
2 - seems all Alaskan shakers and movers (pure GOP) had a finger in the pie ...

Yes, earmarks were not abused solely by either party, the GOP did plenty as did the Democrats. The GOP was, however, the party to finally eliminate them and now they're coming back under the Democrats.

I can't say I personally find earmarks entirely wrong. A certain minimal amount of pork in politics greases the wheels so to speak, and makes compromise easier. Too much is entirely bad of course.

Like adding fine print, but not letting anyone know about it.

Stuff like this explains why Akumetsu was such a popular story in Japan...

Biden is going to follow in Obamas footsteps and close Gitmo!

Remember when Obama signed that Executive Order on Day One of his presidency to do that? Biden is so brave and courageous to carry on this legacy and close it as well!

Where's the prisoners going to go to?
