Two decades of bipartisan spending retard-ery, sometimes handwaved as 'shovel-ready job' infrastructure or Keynesian economic support in times of recession, where spending never returned to 'normal', the numbers thrown around just got bigger to confront bigger crises--or, in the case of Wuhan flu, mostly imaginary crises, and the majority of what it bought for the average American is inflation that's destroyed any positive of wage increases for four years.

If there isn't enough political support for cutting spending, raise taxes until there is. Or the budget is under control, whichever comes first.

Raising taxes has a tendency to reduce revenue, not increase it, particularly if you raise them a lot.

That's not a general rule. It is definitely possible to tax increases to be counterproductive to government revenue but the US is not at or near that level of tax burden.

Inflation has devastated small businesses and the lower and middle class. A tax increase would make that much worse. They would absolutely lose revenue from all the businesses downsizing or closing.
We kind of are, though. IIRC, Trump's cutting of taxes resulted in a bigger tax income for the federal government.
