Looks like the UK, US, Canada, Taiwan and others maybe getting an influx from a potentially new Hong Kong diaspora that may happen thanks to this new security law.

This was inevitable the moment the cop took over.

I wonder if China will allow any of them to leave? Not like those sort of countries have a good record of just allowing citizens to walk away. Especially as I expect the ones most likely to leave are those most likely to be well educated money makers
Good on the UK. I wish Trump would do this as well in the US. We could use 3 million anti-communist voters.

Hard to say for sure. On the one hand, they’d be outside Beijing’s reach (yes, if they *really* wanted to they could kidnap someone but it’s not likely). On the other, them leaving the city means they’re on the outside making trouble and could be portrayed as abandoning those who can’t leave.

I think he’s considering it, actually, although most HKers would prefer to go to Canada or Australia as opposed to the U.S.

The sad thing is, I don’t see a way out of this that doesn’t wind up with Hong Kong not getting screwed. Seriously, fuck Claude MacDonald.

Edit:

@Urabrask Revealed they aren’t all anti-Beijing, though. What you’d have is a city that suddenly goes from being the Manhattan of the Far East to the Detroit of the Far East. Would also do some real damage to the global financial system.

How many people live in Hong Kong exactly? *Googles* Wow. Over 7,5 million people on average. Imagine if the UK somehow managed to get all of them out of Hong Kong, leaving the city as a ghost town.

Hey, that's a pretty neat What-If scenario!

Indeed, its certainly fascinating to think about. Just don't let Carl make that thread. He'll throw a weird spin on it.

The anti-Beijings can stay in Hong Kong then. However, based on the size of the protests, I assume that about 80-90% of the population don't want the mainland to control their city. That's still a lot of people. I really need to make that thread.

Well, in an ideal world the pro-Beijing camp would be the ones to GTFO since they had precisely zip to do with Hong Kong becoming what it is. And I can see the point of why some might choose to stay since, authoritarian assholery by Beijing notwithstanding, Hong Kong is their home.

Also, I find it hilarious that the Chinese bitch about the unequal treaties but ignore 1) the fact that China’s refusal to engage with the West on equal terms was a major factor in what happened, and 2) that China has been busy shitting on its neighbors when possible anyway because that’s what it does, except for those who can push back.

Honestly, if they’d leased it in perpetuity it would have been less of an issue. China might have opted to still invade, but then again, they might not given how much shit they’d have gotten from the rest of the world (Goa wasn’t anywhere near the level of importance of Hong Kong, and colony or not, it would not have endeared the PRC to most of the world. If anything it might have fucked China in the long run since the U.S. would have worked to isolate them while the Soviets moved to beat the crap out of them and nuked the Chinese nuclear program.

Which would have been kind of funny, actually.

I mean...this is a not so subtle way of saying the Chinese are claiming authority worldwide.

I’m not sure if such a law has ever existed before.

“Criticize us anywhere in the world and we will arrest you if you set foot here”.

This can easily be expanded to say Tajikistan or some countries in Africa where China has the government over a barrel. A citizen criticizes China and they are demanded to be handed over.

The scope of the law belies China’s ambition. They desire to rule the world.

Yeah but they are pissing off everyone, for goodness sake, they are now saying they want vladivostok. Having the US, India, Japan, AND Russia against them is suicide.

Oh my gosh, I've been speculating that China might start a war with Russia to distract its populace and 'bleed off' some of the excess of young male population they have in a war, but I never thought it was more than a 20-30% chance of actually happening.

Of course, this is a long way from a shooting war still, but given the pressure inside of China is still building...

It's not quite as ridiculous as all that. Many countries have laws that affect you even if you're in another country. For instance the US has the PROTECT act, which states that if you travel to another country and have sex with children, you get prosecuted under US pedophilia laws even if said act happened in a country where it was legal.

Granted I don't see it as exactly the same, I find it just a tad more noble and reasonable to protect kids from getting raped than protect the government from having mean things said about it. But the scope of the law is comparable on a purely legalistic basis.

Why don't they solve their issues with a Martial Arts Tournament?

Because China killed off a good portion of its actual Martial Artists decades ago

All those Sambo or Systema Martial Artists that Russia's got will smash through whatever China's got

And this guy decided to move away to Taiwan. Now the "Raitai Tournament" is exclusively held in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
