Russian Invasion of Ukraine 2022

Been chatter about this already, but because it's relevant:

Of course, the Russians are employing drones of their own, though I'd say Ukraine's access to DIY stuff that can take out million-dollar factory kit gives them a leg-up their grandfathers could've only dreamed of back in the day.

1:06 is just brutal. They're Russians, yeah, but seeing flying death coming towards you like that and not being able to do anything about it except covering yourself in vain? RIP.

Pilots eligible for training on the F-16 Platform are being identified and Europe is working on a training plan for them with eleven countries to be involved in said operation which will presumably take place in Denmark and Romania.

Over forty countries will be taking part in the peace talks located in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia including Ukraine as well as China, the United States, India and...

Oh I guess Russia won't be there. Hopefully they pass on some photos or send them a postcard or something. Other countries taking part include reportedly Chile, Egypt, the European Union, Indonesia, Mexico, Poland, the United Kingdom, and Zambia.

Yesterday Ukrainian Air Force struck the Chongar Bridge links between Southern Ukraine and Crimea with Storm Shadow cruise missiles. Allegedly Russia attempted to destroy the airbase these Ukrainian Su-24's were operating out of the previous night using numerous guided missiles including hypersonic Kinzahls but failed to eliminate their target.

French supplied SCALP Cruise Missiles, a close variant of the British Storm Shadow, now in Ukrainian Service.

Illicit smuggling of computer chips and circuitry to make Russian weapons work continues. Here a Russian 300mm Tornado Guided Missile is found using Chinese circuits fabricated earlier this year.

Russian Missiles Struck Pokrovsk, the targets including residential buildings and a hotel. A significant number of first responders/emergency personnel and law enforcement were killed or wounded as well. Seven killed and over eighty wounded at the moment.

Reportedly the Russians incurred considerable losses in this operation including the loss of anywhere between 16-25 Russian Paratroopers in a vehicle recon Unit led by a Major.

Yesterdays strike was apparently a double tap, where you strike a facility and than strike it again to maximize first responder and emergency personnel casualties, helping explain the large number and proportion of emergency personnel killed and wounded in the strikes.

Leo1!?
I suppose they can be used as SPG for IFV/APC units, in same manner as T-55. They were poorly armoured when new, 60 years ago ... although I wonder if best use of them would be training.

The combined amounts pledged over delivered excluding engineering and recovery vehicles is probably a smidgen over 200 Leopard 1A5's IIRC at the moment

Greece and Turkey still use them en masse. Sure, they don't have the armor of modern MBTs, but they often come with better electronics than many Russian tanks, and if they kill the enemy first, the armor is not that much of an issue.

1. Any tank is better than no tank.
2. If Ukrainian tactics and strategy does its job, generally, the main threat to these tanks will be mines, which no tank handles particularly well.
3. Even if tactics and strategy fails... well... we haven't seen many tank duels compared to minefields, drones and dialed in artillery.
4. This war has been a bonanza for any country looking to unload its old stuff at ever better prices. MICs worldwide are making bank.
5. Biggest issue with Leo1's IMO is Ukraine having to deal with the logistics of fielding such an old design that was built with a VERY obsolete design philosophy in mind compared to their T series tanks.

Still have in stock, you mean.
I take a dim view of the Leo1's survivability if not used as an APC with a Big Gun.
How is it worse at that than literally any armored vehicle other than last generation MBTs?

7cm steel at thickest? Plus whatever more is bolted on top?
It is worse than many APC/IFV (and not necessarily the newest ones).

No old IFV or APC has as much (unless you count MBT based ones like Namer), some newer ones have something close, and those are close in weight to it.
There's also the fairly common MEXAS add-on armor kit for them that may be included that takes it beyond that.

Associated Press reports on thousands of Ukrainian civilians being held in Russian prison camps and detention centers, doing forced labor for the Russian military.

AP News said:
The Ukrainian civilians woke long before dawn in the bitter cold, lined up for the single toilet and were loaded at gunpoint into the livestock trailer. They spent the next 12 hours or more digging trenches on the front lines for Russian soldiers.

Many were forced to wear overlarge Russian military uniforms that could make them a target, and a former city administrator trudged around in boots five sizes too big. By the end of the day, their hands curled into icy claws.

Nearby, in the occupied region of Zaporizhzhia, other Ukrainian civilians dug mass graves into the frozen ground for fellow prisoners who had not survived. One man who refused to dig was shot on the spot — yet another body for the grave.

Russia reportedly plans on establishing at least twenty five more prison colonies and six more detention centers in occupied Ukraine and across Russia, capable of 'serving' many more Ukrainian civilians who have no apparent legal status in Russia. Due to the establishment of martial law, Ukrainians are able to be imprisoned for almost any offense, real, imagined or exaggerated including speaking the Ukrainian language. The United Nations has documented over seventy cases of Ukrainian civilians being executed by Russian liberators (pdf).

AP News report is based on interviews with twenty former civilian detainees, freed prisoners of war, intelligence officials, prison negotiators as well as social media posts, satellite imagery, and government documentation delivered by the International Red Cross.

AP News said:
The building in Rostov is among at least 40 detention facilities in Russia and Belarus, and there are 63 makeshift and formal ones in occupied Ukrainian territory where Ukrainian civilians are held, according to an AP map built on data from former captives, the Ukrainian Media Initiative for Human Rights, and the Russian human rights group Gulagu.net. The recent U.N. report counted a total of 37 facilities in Russia and Belarus and 125 in occupied Ukraine.
