There are many towns up there that would love to have a boom time from new mines opening or whatever. Alaska is a rough place. Abundant resources is what is has over other places.
But no. All blocked. The entire state is a locked up to protect nature or whatever.
I've seen pictures a a couple places they want to drill or mine. It's not like in the middle of a forest or anything. Barren rocky wastes and tundra. There are like a million square miles of tundra and wastes. 1 square mile for a mine is not a big deal.

The concern is that the mining company will take shortcuts as has happened many times before resulting in the abandonment of towns and counties. And in one case the evacuation of the entire county surrounding Times Beach. Dioxin contamination had seeped into the groundwater and further spread by the spring flooding. The contamination was caused by an idiot. Who instead of processing the contaminated oil and disposing of it as toxic waste, decided to double his money by using the oil for his dust suppression business. Spraying the county's dirt roads and fields with the tainted oil.
The Salton Sea for example has high levels of rare earths and toxic runoff that has gone airborne with its bottom now exposed. Lung cancer and respiratory illnesses in the region is many times higher than the rest of the continent. That includes Mexico whose pollution control is subject to corruption.

As for optics...that's pretty much what all Trump's supporters want too.
One of the big impediments to smooth rail logistics between the EU and Ukraine is getting addressed through some nice engineering work.
Edit: In case the tweet doesn't come through, UA's new rail cars are designed to work on both the EU and UA gauges of rail-lines, making it much easier to move logistics by rail into and out of Ukraine.
