US War Plans Leaked, Analysts Warn Ukraine War Documents Could Provide Valuable Information to Russia

By ChrisApril 7, 2023Updated:April 8, 2023

Classified war documents containing secret American and NATO plans to aid Ukraine in a planned offensive against Russian troops have been posted on social media channels, according to senior Biden administration officials.

The documents, which include anticipated weapons deliveries and troop and battalion strengths, do not provide specific battle plans, but military analysts say they offer many insights into American intelligence efforts to aid Ukraine.

Sabrina Singh, the deputy press secretary at the Pentagon, claimed "We are aware of the reports of social media posts and the department is reviewing the matter."

Although some parts of the leaked documents appear to be authentic, analysts warn that they could provide valuable information to Russia, such as timetables for the delivery of weapons and troops, Ukrainian troop buildup numbers, and other military details.

According to a slide from the leaked documents, there was a discrepancy regarding the amount of casualties. Ukrainian troop deaths were estimated to be as high as 71,500, while Russian soldiers killed were estimated to be between 16,000 to 17,500. However, the Pentagon and other analysts believe that the actual number of casualties on both sides may be higher than the estimates mentioned in the documents. Russia is believed to have suffered closer to 200,000 killed and injured, while Ukraine has had more than 100,000 killed and injured.

The Pentagon is investigating the leak of the documents, which appeared on Twitter and Telegram.

It is unclear how the leak of these classified war documents occurred. Investigations are ongoing to determine who may have been responsible for the breach of security. However, it is possible that the leak occurred due to a security breach within the US military or intelligence agencies or that the documents were obtained by a foreign entity with access to American intelligence systems.

It is also possible that the documents were leaked intentionally as part of a disinformation campaign to mislead or confuse US and NATO officials. The investigations into the leak will likely involve analyzing the security protocols surrounding the handling of classified information and identifying potential vulnerabilities in those protocols.

The New York Times reported:

The documents do not provide specific battle plans, like how, when, and where Ukraine intends to launch its offensive, which American officials say is likely coming in the next month or so. And because the documents are five weeks old, they offer a snapshot of time — the American and Ukrainian view, as of March 1, of what Ukrainian troops might need for the campaign.
To the trained eye of a Russian war planner, field general or intelligence analyst, however, the documents no doubt offer many tantalizing clues and insights. The documents mention, for instance, the expenditure rate of HIMARS — American-supplied high mobility artillery rocket systems, which can launch attacks against targets like ammunition dumps, infrastructure and concentrations of troops, from a distance. The Pentagon has not said publicly how fast Ukrainian troops are using the HIMARS munitions; the documents do.

Pentagon scrambles to remove top-secret Ukraine war plans from Twitter, Elon Musk responds

The mishandling of classified documents by American leaders has generated in recent months countless headlines, but when someone posted top-secret U.S. and NATO plans to build up Ukraine's military ahead of a planned offensive against Russian troops to Twitter and Telegram this week, the Pentagon scrambled to get them deleted from social media.

"We are aware of the reports of social media posts and the department is reviewing the matter," said Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, according to The New York Times.

While the five-week-old documents don't provide specific battle plans, they do "no doubt offer many tantalizing clues and insights" for, say, a highly-trained member of Russian intelligence.

"The documents mention, for instance, the expenditure rate of HIMARS — American-supplied high mobility artillery rocket systems, which can launch attacks against targets like ammunition dumps, infrastructure and concentrations of troops, from a distance," The Times reports. "The Pentagon has not said publicly how fast Ukrainian troops are using the HIMARS munitions; the documents do."

The leaked documents appear to have been modified, according to military analysts, boosting American estimates of the number of Ukrainians who have died in the war and downplaying Russian losses — a possible effort on Moscow's part to spread disinformation.

Still, The Times states, "the disclosures in the original documents, which appear as photographs of charts of anticipated weapons deliveries, troop and battalion strengths, and other plans, represents a significant breach of American intelligence in the effort to aid Ukraine."

Now, military analysts say, government channels sympathetic to Russia have been sharing and circulating the classified briefing slides.

Michael Kofman is the director of Russian studies at CNA, a research institute in Arlington, Va. He warned against trusting anything Russian sources have to say.

"Whether these documents are authentic or not, people should take care with anything released by Russian sources," Kofman said.

While it is unclear how much of an impact the leaked materials will have on the war efforts, what is clear is that the United States has been actively engaged in helping Ukraine with its battle plans and spying on the Russians — all while providing endless amounts of taxpayer money and American weapons to fight a war Congress has yet to declare.

Indeed, according to The Times, Ukraine was, from the beginning, afraid exactly this sort of intelligence breach would occur:

But early on during the war, Ukrainian officials were hesitant about sharing their battle plans with the United States, for fear of leaks, American and European officials said. As recently as last summer, American intelligence officials said they often had a better understanding of Russia's military plans than of Ukraine's.

Concerned that sharing their operation plans could also highlight weaknesses and discourage continued American support, the Ukrainians were closely guarding them even as American intelligence was gathering precise details on what the Kremlin was ordering and Russian commanders were planning.

This very public leak, The Times writes, "posted on social media and available around the world, is bound to harm intelligence sharing between Ukraine and the United States."

To that end, the Pentagon is now trying to discover the source of the leak. Meanwhile, it is, the T(w)itter Daily News tweeted, "trying to get Twitter to remove posts that contain classified documents about the war in Ukraine."

The news was enough to prompt a response from Chief Twit, Twitter CEO Elon Musk, who could hardly contain his sarcasm.

"Yeah, you can totally delete things from the Internet," Musk replied, "that works perfectly and doesn't draw attention to whatever you were trying to hide at all."

Classified Pentagon documents containing information about U.S. & NATO plans for proxy war in Ukrainian have leaked. Biden administration is reportedly demanding they be scrubbed from the internet.

The documents show that there are allegedly British and U.S. soldiers in Ukraine.

Is there a hidden agenda behind the leak?

Top Secret Ukraine War Plans LEAK | Biden FREAKS | Pentagon In Panic | What Is Really Going On?

The fact that the Pentagon wanted to censor these documents tells me everything I need to know.

TBH if these were pure fantasy propaganda numbers, you can easily predict that they would also want them censored, same reaction, so it's a rabbit hole narrative - "Russia made some partially or fully fake set of supposed NATO documents meant to demoralize Ukraine and its supporters - hence, no matter what Pentagon says, that's only more evidence that they are true!".
The fact that serious analysts don't want to talk of it while random sensationalists and Russia simps love to confirms my conviction that it's not trustworthy.

US troops have never been thought of ever being involved.
At all, at any level.
Because the one thing that is always known is troops movements because soldiers talk
That one twitter guy is just trolling people, the document he posted, if anyone bothers to zoom and read it, is marked as secret, so it could be real (though then again with someone effort anyone tracking the news closely and having some old leaks as example could make something like it), but regards projections of Ukraine forming units out of foreign provided equipment, the list of which look pretty damn close to the public news of equipment donations to Ukraine.
So no, it's not NATO preparations for invasion, why would they be training only now for NATO equipment and are to be partially equipped with second rate UKR gear if these are supposed to be staffed by NATO soldiers?

US intelligence leak deals severe blow to Ukraine war effort

The largest U.S. military leak in a decade is a serious blow to Ukraine's war effort, creating an intelligence threat for that country's forces ahead of an expected counteroffensive this spring.

Classified documents leaked on social media offer extensive details about munitions, training and air defense systems at a critical point in the fight. The Pentagon is still reviewing the validity of the documents.

Dozens of classified U.S. and NATO documents, some labeled "Top Secret," began leaking in more obscure parts of the internet in January before spilling over to Twitter and Telegram and picking up attention last week.

While they only provide a status of the conflict up to March, the material does reveal insight into Ukraine's military capabilities, including battalion sizes, training on advanced weaponry and deployment of heavy combat vehicles, such as Leopard II tanks.

They also give a view into Kyiv's shortcomings, with at least one document describing how the country could soon run out of munitions for Soviet-era anti-air missile systems, exposing a potential vulnerability in Ukraine's air defense systems.

Kurt Volker, a distinguished fellow with the Center for European Policy Analysis, said the leak is worrying because it gives the world a "snapshot" of U.S. assessments and judgements on the war in Ukraine.

"It is signaling to Ukrainians, to Russians, to others, 'Here's what we're thinking,'" Volker said, and it "may give some clues as to the quality of our information, where we're getting it from … which will cause the people we're collecting on to shut that down."

Perhaps the most alarming leak contains information on the Ukrainian air defenses.

One document, dated in February, says missiles for the S300 will run out by May, while the SA-11 Gadfly missile system will be depleted by the end of March. Both systems make up 89 percent of Ukraine's air defenses, according to NATO, and are crucial in fending off frequent Russian missile strikes.

Russian military bloggers have already widely spread the leaked documents, including those estimating how many air defense systems and aircraft such as fighter jets are deployed by Ukraine.

NATO's assessment also says Ukraine could withstand only a few more waves of Russian missile strikes, while providing a map of where its air defense systems are.

John Herbst, senior director of the Atlantic Council's Eurasia Center and a former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, referred to the information on Ukraine's air defenses as the "most unfortunate" part of the leaked documents.

But he said none of the documents contain any critical information not already known by NATO allies and Russian intelligence.

"I don't think there's any doubt that some damage has been done to Ukraine's war effort as a result of leaks," he said. "But was the damage overwhelming? Probably not."

Other documents explain the strength and capabilities of Ukrainian brigades, as well as which weapons systems Ukraine has trained on. One February document estimates the number of tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and artillery units fielded by Ukraine.

Moscow has been unusually quiet on the leaks, though state-run news outlet TASS published the details of the documents.

Russian military bloggers appear to be skeptical, with one account, the War Chronicle, pointing out misspellings and errors in the material.

Rybar, a blogger with more than 1 million followers on Telegram, called it "a controlled leak and a massive disinformation campaign" to make Ukrainians look unprepared and ultimately encourage Russia to make a mistake.

The leak is also worrying for the U.S. because Russia could figure out how the Pentagon is collecting crucial intelligence on Russian forces and capabilities.

The documents contain information on not only Ukraine's forces but also a detailed assessment on Russia's army, from tanks to artillery and aircraft.

Michael O'Hanlon, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, said in an email that the leaks could "lead Russia to tighten its communications security, reducing our knowledge of their next moves."

It's unclear how many documents are currently circulating across the internet, but at least 100 separate documents have appeared online, according to several reports and analysts.

The Pentagon on Monday declined to comment on the size and scope of the leak, revealing that the Defense Department was still investigating the matter.

"The Department of Defense is working around the clock to look at the scope and scale of the distribution, the assessed impact and our mitigation measures," Chris Meagher, assistant to the secretary of Defense for public affairs, told reporters.

"We're still investigating how this happened, as well as the scope of the issue. There have been steps to take a closer look at how this type of information is distributed and to whom. We're also still trying to assess what might be out there," he added.

Meagher also revealed that the format of the documents are "similar in format to those used to provide daily updates to our senior leaders on Ukraine and Russia-related operations, as well as other intelligence updates," and "present a very serious risk to national security."

Investigative group Bellingcat traced the documents back to a leak in early March through a channel on Discord, a website where users discuss topics, primarily gaming.

Ten of the documents appeared on a Discord channel related to the popular video game "Minecraft" in the earliest verified leak, but Bellingcat said there may have been leaks as early as January on a separate Discord server.

The Pentagon last week said it was reviewing the document leaks and had turned over a formal criminal investigation of them to the Department of Justice. U.S. officials on Monday said the investigation was a "top priority" and urged caution when studying the documents, noting some of them have been altered.

The Defense Department did not identify how many have been altered. But a document that gained attention last week inflated the number of Ukrainians killed in action and drastically reduced the number of Russian casualties in the war.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the head of Ukraine's presidential office, has called the intelligence leaks an attempt to "divert attention" and "sow discord" among Western allies.

Also on Monday, the Pentagon would not explain whether more documents are likely to appear online and how many officials in the Defense Department had access to these documents. Officials say the leak has prompted the department to take steps to review how some classified information is shared and to whom.

In other words - I'm going to need you to not do your job because we can't do ours.

Blinken reassures Ukraine of 'ironclad' support after bruising leaks

Secretary of State Antony Blinken reassured his Ukrainian counterpart that the United States maintains "ironclad" support behind the Eastern European country in a call following the bruising leaks of U.S. intelligence on the war.

Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted on Tuesday that Blinken emphasized that the U.S. is continuing to support Ukraine against Russia's invasion and rejected attempts to question Ukraine's ability to win the war.

"During our call today, @SecBlinken reaffirmed the ironclad U.S. support and vehemently rejected any attempts to cast doubt on Ukraine's capacity to win on the battlefield," Kuleba said. "The U.S. remains Ukraine's trustworthy partner, focused on advancing our victory and securing a just peace."

The U.S. military suffered its largest leak in a decade over the past several days, when classified documents that appear to detail information about training and air defense systems were revealed. The documents also discuss Ukraine's military capabilities, advanced weaponry and possible limits, including that it could soon run out of munitions for the Soviet-era anti-air missile systems.

The documents began appearing in less visited sites online as early as January, but they moved to major platforms like Twitter and Telegram last week. Officials are reviewing whether the documents are authentic, and the Pentagon has also launched an investigation.

Officials have indicated that at least some of the documents might have been manipulated for propaganda purposes. One had a significantly lower number of Russian casualties and significantly higher number of Ukrainian casualties than is believed.

The leak came ahead of an expected Ukrainian counteroffensive this spring.

The documents do not seem to include information on plans for the counteroffensive. But they also include information that the U.S. has been spying on Russian and Ukrainian leaders to keep track of the war's progress.

Ah yes, attack the person not the argument.
The person making the argument is a treasonous red idiot, and the argument is one typical for treasonous red idiots, as in, it's treasonous, it's red and it's idiotic. What else can i say about the argument?
Do you seriously expect me to give a single grain of trust to something a leftist in middle of a virtue signalling rant says?

What argument? Leftist virtue signalling? Stories pulled from body orifices?
It's not even worth addressing.
In my opinion leftist pacifists were absolute scum during the Cold War, and they still are.
Nice to see you admit you don’t believe anything that goes against The Narrative then. Always suspected it but nice to have it confirmed.

So I guess this means I can ignore anything you say or present out of hand as well. I could reel off all sorts of nice names and labels I could slap onto you. But I won’t.

I'll take the The Narrative over people who think The Narrative is not red enough.
To demonstrate to everyone what kind of absolute red shitheel you are requesting me to take at her word:

Am i supposed to take her migrant smuggling and CCP influence op defenses seriously too?

Sod off then, go watch some more leftist propaganda.

Adorable. Keeping cheering on the fight until the last drop of Ukrainian blood then.

Oh and make sure Biden doesn’t forget to mail you your check of stolen and laundered American taxpayer money. He’s getting kind of forgetful these days. ;)

Okay. And was that really so difficult.

Except oh wait. Your still attacking the person. Instead of what the actual argument was in this instance. This isn’t about Europe’s infrastructure or the EU’s treatment of refugees.

(To which, by the way, my stance is; the less China is in Europe the better and Europe should look after its own damn infrastructure. As for the EU and migrants; as far as I’m concerned every single one of the economic migrants should be sent packing with their tails between their legs. Heck, find a way to bill them for their stay if it can be done. The only refugees that Europe should be taking in are ones from either Ukraine or Russia. Especially those who are trying to escape the war zones or being drafted.)
