Putting aside the fact that most Mexicans would not appreciate being conquered, making Mexico a state would make the occupations in the Middle East look easy.
Mexico's problems wouldn't suddenly disappear, they'd just become the United States' problems.
How do you fix the standard of living? Government programs? Well, that money has to come from somewhere, and that probably will mean the current US will subsidize them heavily. So, good luck with that.
The cartels won't go away instantly, either. The federal government would have to deal with them (again, money and effort). Never mind that those same cartels, along with other gangs and mafias already operate within the USA currently. So how would the USA invading Mexico do anything but spread the USA so thin that the Cartels would have more power?
Also, dealing with the cartels/ occupying Mexico means you’d either have to massively increase the size of the US military in terms of materials and soldiers in uniform (good luck with that) or massively shift support away from the USA’s shadow-empire overseas. Which is unthinkable you, and every neo-con and other politician in the pockets of the military industrial complex.
The illegal immigrant problem, even, wouldn't disappear, it'd just change. There still would not be as good of economic opportunities in Mexico, but now all the Mexicans looking for better lives could legally migrate north. Congrats, you’ve just made the problem 50-times worse and given the Democrats even more voters to appeal to.
Again, why are you claiming it has *anything* to do with resources in the company of people who know better?
Are you the last (supposed) right winger in the world who believes the bullshit that there are US politicians who genuinely would have wanted to have effective border control but don't just because they can't arrange budget resources to make it so?

To be fair the worst of Mexico's problems are the USAs fault.
The CIA is sabotaging their elections and helping the cartels to ensure they have a steady stream of undocumented child slaves being sent across the border.
The USA deep state is deeply involved in mexico
Real investigative journalists just need to (and have done so) take a casual stroll across the border to find baby trafficking stations.
Naturally corporate media refuses to air those videos.

It is easy if people are willing to do what's necessary. Building a wall along the entire border is not only possible but would be an effective preventative measure for most traffic. The next step is to take a hostile stance on illegal aliens and actually punish them severely for trying to illegally enter the US. You gotta make life a living hell for illegals so they determine its not worth coming here and fuck off back to wherever they come from.

Mexico is itself made up of multiple regions, which are somewhat different from each other. I think there are actually parts of it that Mexico City has never really ruled over except on paper.
Trying to assimilate all that to North American standards of government? That would keep the US busy...

Also @Zachowon surely there is a scenario in which the US military would be expected to operate on CONUS soil: If they had to repel an external invasion.
If the Chinese or Russians managed to orbital-drop a big load of infantry, tanks, etc in the middle of Kansas and were marching in and occupying cities... would they only have to face the National Guard?

It is worth noting that USA does have colonies and a path towards integration.
It is a multi step process that takes years.
Puerto rico has been a colony of the USA since 1898. and have halted their integration at the final step. they are technically USA citizens.
US troops can be deployed in that as that is a situation where war would be declared or martial law would be declared allowing troops to operate within the US.
Posse comitatus would not be in play because we are not being used in policing manner, but as a fighting force to locate engage and destroy the enemies of thw united states
