lordsfire is right, aside from what he said though I want to add that:From the way it's described, the WH40K hyperspace seems most similar to the Babylon 5 one. Maybe just reconfiguring their jump-point generators to tunnel to a different level of subspace than the one they've all apparently been using might save them a whole lot of problems?
there is a race that does something similar to what you described.
The Tau race reversed engineered the partial remains of a crashed human warp drive. They didn't find geller field though.
They solved the "every ship is mysterious lost once it enters The Warp" problem by just skipping on its skein instead of fully entering it. like a pebble being skipped across a lake
but the downside is that this method of FTL is vastly slower than actually entering the warp. to the point of being untenable for the imperium.
the necrons use some clarktech to travel through realspace instead. but trying to reverse engineer their tech makes you insane.
Tyranids use gravitic psionics, not really viable.
Eldar has webway. which is better. emps was actually trying to make human webway when he got psionically nuked by horus. So that project is unsalvageable at the moment.
