Then again, given the Inner Sphere response to a “warship” is probably going to be lots of ASFs, nukes, and dropships; I’d say this ship would do well handling that kind of response. Going to be really embarrassing explaining that your “glorious last stand” was against an armed merchantman looking for a trade deal.
In the absence of Canon Idiot Balls, there is absolutely no sane reason to assume that the Inner Sphere powers don't have WarShip production broadly proportional to their size, which is to say orders of magnitude greater than ours. They probably have substantially less naval capacity per capita because they waste a ton of resources on their obsession with BattleMechs and their byzantine internal politics, but these are still vastly larger realms.

We don’t let know what the situation with warships in the IS is, I mean we have been told that there are a lot more jumpships but that doesn’t really also translate to more warships as well so our new merchant vessels could be either considered warships or well armed jumpships depending on what the scale of warship construction is in the Inner Sphere.

I personally don’t think they have any or meaningful amount of warships as it would really mess up the setting, I mean the only reason I can see for them to not have bombed themselves into the Stone Age is lack of ability to do so in the original setting and with a lot of warships that becomes a lot more likely.

The problem with unfucking the IS economy and manufacturing is that it should have resulted in 2 jump wide strips between every nation consisting of utterly burnout ruined worlds after 300 years of back and forth Total War without being reduced to objective raids for 2/3rds of it. Most borders probably look like trench warfare in space with jump points fortified and under surveillance while attacks can take planets but not hold when reinforcements roll in.

Turn 135 - If I Were A Rich Man

The Black Steel has counterattacked heavily, hitting the Arvum, Pryyemnyy, Baddorando, Highland and Sturmland systems. Home Fleet was able to drive off the attackers, but at the cost of extremely heavy losses among Artemis flotillas as well as their various corvettes and raiders. Grand Fleet was able to finish off the Black Steel forces before they actually struck the colonies themselves too heavily, but nevertheless there was damage to the civilian sectors in all affected systems.

It should be noted that the attack was carried out mostly with cruiser and destroyer tonnage vessels rather than capital units, which is a somewhat worrisome development as if the Black Steel had included their battleships in the assault it is quite likely that civilian casualties would be listed in the tens of millions, and you would have suffered extensive infrastructure loss in the affected systems. As it stands, while losses were heavy among defending units the Black Steel failed to land any telling hits on infrastructure and casualties among civilians were extremely low thanks to emergency shelters and a few bits of good luck.

Meanwhile, Strike Fleet and Expeditionary Fleet are continuing their raids, hitting more minor resource collection points and another small yard complex, this one apparently dedicated to parasite drones rather than warships. It should be noted that the raids are having to regularly revisit systems, since the Black Steel is very aggressive with rebuilding their infrastructure and appear to have prefabricated modular mining stations stockpiled. The raiding ‘zone’ is a rough area around the GX-9-11 line from H to L. Attacks north of the H line run into heavier defenses than the raiding strategy calls for dealing with, although that is also where some of the more lucrative hits have been made.

Analysts believe that the constant attacks are bleeding the Black Steel and barring them from expanding their resource collection and construction network, thus creating constraints on their strength which, in the fullness of time, could be decisive.

QM Note - a slight look behind the scenes at quest mechanics, the raiding strategy has as a cost a steady minor attrition in deployed units, while removing successes from Black Steel magnitude rolls, which govern the strength of Black Steel attacks and the interval between major strikes. At the current level of raiding, the strategy also removes 1 success from the Black Steel growth rolls each turn.

The Department of Periphery Studies has a brand new obsession, which they are obsessing over obsessively. It’s rather harmless as far as you can tell, with the distinguished tenured faculty members of the department gathering around televisions with gaming systems playing this new game that apparently involves racing around in cartoony vehicles dropping banana peels and shooting turtle shells at each other accompanied by annoyingly peppy music. You really aren’t sure what the point is, but it keeps them from being troublesome which is good enough for you.

Then you get a note from General Zara begging you to stop the Department of Periphery Studies from bombarding his office with proposals for banana flinging guns. Followed shortly after by the rest of the service chiefs.

Your face and your palm form yet another chapter in their torrid and forbidden romance.

You walk into the budget meeting and almost turn around and walk right back out, as Amaunet is apparently in full Troll Cat mode, with a large ‘shell’ identical to those found in that game between her paws and looking inordinately smug. Unfortunately she spotted you.

“Padrone, good news! We’re not replacing our entire military with goombas!” The entire room groans at that. “Nor will we be financing shell throwers, banana peel projectors, mushroom powered hang gliders, or any other such nonsense.” She then rattles the shell, which emits a groan, then picks it up to reveal the communications director from the Department of Periphery Studies who is looking just a bit rattled. “And we have reminded the Department that they are supposed to only pretend to forward their distinguished faculties ideas to us, not actually do so. Isn’t that right, Doctor?”

A few heartfelt, if dizzy, apologies later and the meeting actually starts with Amaunet waving General Zara forward.

“Your Majesty, the Army will be continuing to build up our offensive capabilities. We will not always be facing enemies that we will need to use weapons of mass destruction on, and make no mistake, no matter how precise they are, naval weapons qualify as such when fired at ground-side targets.” The peppery Italian gives Admiral Fisher a slightly challenging look, but Fisher just nods in agreement. “That being said, we’re taking a risk here and enlarging the Rapid Reaction Force. Considering the history of such expansions, we are already bracing for ridiculous shenanigans.” He actually smiles.

Admiral Savić then takes the podium. “Your Majesty, the Navy is likewise providing data to the R&D teams from our own training systems, but it has unfortunately become obvious that such systems do not, in fact, directly correlate to usable combat drone control and operational systems. Other than that, we are ready to begin production of the new fast cruiser units, and have begun investigating a complimentary destroyer design to escort them. This will be a much longer process, unfortunately, as the existing Battle design is exceedingly difficult to improve upon in any meaningful way.”

Speaking for myself, I’d rather we not go down the road that leads to War Crimes O’Clock being our default response to any conflicts.”

The big cat holds your eyes for a moment, then chuffs again and settles back to allow the budget meeting to continue.

Elizabeth Lee takes the podium next. “I think it best to start with our expansion plans. There are two systems that we can settle conventionally and one that would be profitably settled making use of a Colony Core Station Complex.”

Tiberius is back from Nova Roma and has a brand new, eye-wateringly white, toga to wear, and is grinning as if he were thirty years younger. “What a vacation! More civil servants please!”

You decide to be mature about things and not throw him out the window.

Dr Byrne is present, but he simply shakes his head when you look over his way. After all, all R&D teams are still hard at work according to the reports you’ve gotten so no new projects will be starting this year.

Sina is normally quiet at these meetings, but this year she speaks up. “Your Majesty, there is one area where we, unfortunately, are somewhat weak, and that is HUMINT. My predecessors all focused on SIGINT and COMINT outside of counter-intelligence operations, leaving us with a somewhat lacking human intelligence component. I would like to correct this, especially with the many opportunities that our mass of new neighbors to the northeast present to us.”

Martina then speaks up. “I know it’s somewhat early, Your Majesty, but I’d like to strongly recommend that we get started now on the next round of regulatory and legal rationalizations in order to keep our law codes as up to date and coherent as possible.”

You continue to suffer minor losses, mostly of parasites and a few ASF wings, but you have also lost a few light warships. In exchange you continue to reap a toll of Black Steel resource gathering operations, although lately you’ve not found any yards or repair facilities. Admiral di Palo has sent you a memo informing you that they will not be expanding the raiding area as of yet, due to a desire to strengthen the raiding forces prior to any such expansion.

Your embassies and agents in the minor powers have been gathering rumors and have compiled a list that is as up to date as they can manage, although they admit that they are hearing vague, contradictory, and just plain odd things at times. Considering the vast distances involved, and that apparently much of it is a region with few if any habitable worlds, and even then involves clusters of relatively dim stars, it is no wonder that there is an enormous amount of lag involved.

There are rumors regarding this Federated Commonwealth, depending on the source they are either an alliance of two or three of the Great Houses, or a full union of two or three of the Great Houses, or a hoax perpetrated by two or three of the Great Houses, or the return of the Star League, or, your personal favorite for sheer outlandishness, ‘could it be Aliens?’.

The most common and credible data appears to indicate that it started out as a personal union between the Federated Suns and the Lyran Commonwealth, but after something called the ‘Ten Minute War’ the Capellan Confederation either joined it, allied with it, conquered it, or were conquered by it, depending on the source. All of the rumors that mention this ‘Ten Minute War’ are adamant that it started and ended in ten minutes on Terra and took place at a wedding, that nobody was killed, and Comstar experienced a major shake-up afterwards.

There are some additional relatively high resolution images of the ‘Federated Commonwealth’ Aegis, which your naval experts have been going over carefully. According to their reports, the ship is in very poor repair, missing several weapons mounts that appear to have simply been left empty. They also report that the ‘Federated Commonwealth’ logo appears to be somewhat haphazardly applied and that there are signs that there is a different logo, more sensibly sized, underneath it that they currently cannot identify.

There are rumors that the Free Worlds League are, variously, at war with, or have already conquered, or are in a cold war with, the Magistracy of Canopus as well as the Federated Commonwealth. There are rumors that the League is expanding into the periphery around the Magistracy, running over several pirate ‘kingdoms’ in the process. Some of the rumors indicate that the League is supposedly enslaving the people they are conquering, but there are indications that this might well be a conflation with ‘imprisoning pirates’ or ‘not letting pirates pirate piratically’.

The rumors state that the Draconis Combine is still at war with the Federated Commonwealth, that they are also expanding in the Periphery, have either absorbed, conquered, or are at war with the Outworlds Alliance. The ‘news’ about the war with the Federated Commonwealth ranges from no-holds-barred total war to a sitzkrieg.

While there are no pleasant surprises in the latest round of colonization and expansion, all three systems are now established and contributing to the Empire. There was a minor bit of drama surrounding the establishment of the Cần Thơ mới legal system, mostly due to a bizarre debate about the most harmonious placement of the entrance to the main courthouse. The architects responsible were promptly sacked and their replacements managed the job on time and on budget, despite the time and money wasted by a rather silly debate over a difference of literally 1 meter.

You receive a holovid from General Zara, delivered without any accompanying reports or memos, just a small note to not be eating or drinking anything when watching.

You rather fastidiously refrain from eating or drinking anything and play the video. And promptly have to prevent yourself from falling off of your desk chair howling in laughter. It looks like the luck of the Rapid Reaction Force is well and truly still alive, still hilarious, and still a threat to military discipline. You doubt that you’ll ever quite be able to look at noodles the same way again, and are fairly sure that inflatable swimming pools are not supposed to be used in that manner. Considering the past antics of the Rapid Reaction Force, you are somehow not surprised by the cardboard boxes, but the inspired and creative use of red plastic drinking cups was a bit out there.

QM Note - Yes, and I can’t even blame Urist, the Rapid Reaction Force managed to go from a Crit Fail roll to a Crit Success roll.

Other than that, military procurement goes quite well. You are present for the commissioning of the first of the new Lion-class battlecruisers, and they are truly spectacular ships, sleek, modern, and exceptionally well designed. The crews are quite happy with them.

The construction of new shipyards of all types has been quite successful this year, with no issues reported. The new capital yard is now ready in the Griffon system, although you do not yet have anything suitable to build in it that will change next year, hopefully.

One thing I don’t think we have gotten is a true perspective of the Empire from an outsider, we mainly see us through the lens of citizens or leadership, how do the neighbors see us from their view?

Turn 136 - Mountain Duet


In early January you receive distressing news of an industrial disaster in the Nowy Śląsk system. A bulk volatile carrier suffered a serious drive mishap during approach to an orbital industrial cluster and slammed into the core structure of said cluster when its drives throttled to emergency maximum thrust without human input. The resulting explosion killed about three hundred people and utterly destroyed a major industrial node in the system.

The black box has already been found and preliminary analysis shows that a cascading electronic fault had resulted in spurious commands being sent to the automatic docking system, the vessel’s crew had tried to correct, and in fact had not evacuated the ship at all. They had managed to engage retro-thrust at the last moment, which quite likely saved many lives as the change in vector from that caused most of the debris to miss a habitat module. Reconstructing the incident points to a specific module within the electrical system, and a review of records shows that it was scheduled to be inspected and replaced at the next service for this particular ship, which was scheduled for that very docking. This was well within the proper window for such an inspection and service and there is absolutely no evidence of any malfeasance on anybody's part.

Nowy Śląsk had been experiencing red hot economic growth thanks to it being a major logistics node for the Imperial military. Thankfully the loss of that industrial capacity is well offset by the new logistics nodes that came online just last year, and some analysts posit that part of the reason for the disaster in the first place was the frenetic activity in the system resulting in extremely tight scheduling of incoming and outgoing traffic which made it critical to always engage automatic docking and undocking systems. If the ship had been under full manual control then this particular failure mode would not have happened, but full manual docking takes up to thirty minutes longer per ship and has an increased likelihood of minor accidents temporarily taking docking nodes out of service.

With the new logistics nodes active there is less overall pressure to produce, which should ease the situation in the future. It is still a kick in the pants, as the Nowy Śląsk system had been poised to pass the Griffon system in terms of absolute economic activity.

Meanwhile, the Pan-Griffon Games have kicked off and now you have a far better idea about all of the new sporting events for the next Olympiad. As such, they’ve all been incorporated into the games, which will hopefully lead to somewhat more success.

Although you are fairly sure it’ll take a few more generations to breed appropriate horses for all of the various equestrian events. And you still haven’t much appreciation for some of these events considering how many horses are badly injured in falls and such. The only bright spot is that your veterinary medicine is good enough that those horses are simply retired rather than put down.

This has, however, inspired the raptors and the people they’ve adopted, since raptor’s are much like cats in that regard, to start coming up with sports of their own. So far many of the canine sports seem to be forming the basis of competitive Raptor Games, with suitable modifications.

Although the sight of a few amused Rexes getting involved in some of the aquatic raptor sports is insanely hilarious for some reason. The enormous splash generated by a 12 ton hyper predator soaring through the air for distance into an enormous pool swamping the entire audience is… pure comedy gold. You are absolutely certain that said Rex would have been shouting CANNONBALL if he had vocal cords.

Grifftigers have been firmly informed that no, they cannot make an attempt and even a pouting Eldest is forbidden from it on the grounds that he is larger than the pool and they are not making a bigger pool just for him. They are all informed that there is a perfectly good ocean just a few kilometers away that they can jump into and, as a bonus, they can go fight mega sharks for fun.

Even though your R&D is not yet complete on two million ton warships, there are a number of general proposals that have been generated by the Imperial Navy that are awaiting that milestone to complete detailed design. Each of the designs represents a different design paradigm that will significantly influence future design work.

The first is Project Oregon, which posits a fairly balanced design that isn’t optimized for any one particular thing but which offers excellent all around performance but at the cost of the highest predicted price-point of the three.

The second is Project McKenna II which is optimized for pure capital damage output from great range with a truly enormous battery of heavy naval PPCs. It has the least defensive capability but overwhelms the enemy with titanic blows from a total of 60 heavy naval PPCs in each total broadside, although only forty can bear on any single target at a time.

The third is the cheapest and most defensively oriented of the three. Project Hammer has by far the lowest long range capital firepower but has a terrifying array of naval autocannons allowing it to utterly wreck anything that it manages to close with. The mix of 30, 35 and 40 centimeter naval autocannons guarantees that anything it closes with will die.

All three projects would make use of double heat sinks and lamellar ferro-carbide armor in terms of strategic materials.
