I like the philosophy of this one - keep enemies far enough away they never get to fire back at all (I say, as the designer). Little weaker, but also comes with features like a full med bay for more humanitarian situations.

Either of these two designs is fine, and if they end up seeing full on warfare Eagle does end up being the better choice.

The Eagle actually has better reach thanks to the fluff and TacOps rules ability to fire capital missiles beyond the 'extreme' capital band with lock-on-after-launch shots. That's one of the reasons Majeure Electrique designs tend to have missiles anytime Admiral Fisher doesn't write the Navy specs to explicitly bar them.

The month of December opens with a quite earth-shattering kaboom, or at least a very loud noise that might as well have been a kaboom even if no explosives were involved. A massive monumental arch that was being built to commemorate the colonization of the first system outside of Griffon itself had collapsed mere days before it was supposed to open.

An investigative commission is already working on the issue, and thankfully there were no actual deaths although several hundred people had to be hospitalized. The plans appear to have been sound, there’s no sign of any malfeasance as the contractors involved were highly reputable and report no irregularities.

Video of the event shows that the left pier had suddenly dropped about ten meters in a matter of seconds, foundations and all, and that this resulted in the entire structure destabilizing and collapsing. The geological survey performed before construction had shown no issues, but several geologists have noted that geology on which Griffsport is built is very complicated due to the volcanic nature of the terrain. They suspect that a lava tube beneath the pier had drained for some reason, perhaps feeding the ongoing eruptions nearby, and had then started a chain reaction collapse.

Regardless, it’s a rather expensive failure, but again, thankfully nobody was killed which makes it far better than it could have been.

The rebuilding of the Arvum defense grid goes far less smoothly than you may have wished, but squeaks in just under the wire thanks to some heroic efforts by the construction crews. According to the reports, while the modular nature of Black Towers should make it simple and straightforward to simply replace destroyed segments, this turned out to be somewhat optimistic as the connection points proved a bit too robust, making removal of the destroyed elements without causing further damage to intact segments exceptionally difficult. It’s one of those problems that are good to have, as the robust nature of the construction saved hundreds of lives, but it did make repair more complicated.

On the economic front, the projects investing in the Catachan and Landprettig systems encountered significant issues causing numerous delays. You scratch your head at reports involving the Landprettig project in particular which rather dryly state that an unknown ‘dwarf’ who oddly fits the profile of the scofflaw involved in stealing models of the Eagle ASF was sighted in the records room minutes before it was discovered that all of the economic planning documents for the project had suffered ‘destruction by ale spillage’. Special Branch is on the hunt for this dwarf, but has no current leads.

The establishment of the new colonies in the Ruby and Steel marches goes quite smoothly, in some welcome news, with no significant issues reported.

Unfortunately, Sina Dey reports that while they eventually managed it, the improved SIGINT project was apparently also plagued with unexpected issues, although when you inquire if any dwarves were sighted your Intelligence chief simply looks confused and admits that no, it was all technical glitches with the software that they planned to use to filter the ‘take’ from the SIGINT systems.

Similar software glitches apparently afflicted the logistics optimization project, according to Amaunet. The issue for both has been traced to a particular contractor in the New Port Royal system who is now under close scrutiny for their business practices.

In addition, DoME reports success in their various projects, and also reports that the Catachan project was, if anything, more successful than anticipated. They are still trying to determine just why, in order to possibly apply that knowledge to future projects, but they aren’t looking a gift horse in the mouth.

In general DoME has great success, but your R&D teams are struggling. On the one hand, they did complete all four major projects that they’d been working on, but in every case it involved a great deal of last-minute scrambling and extremely hard work by the researchers in question. Grace is utterly exhausted by it all and has actually been admitted to the hospital after collapsing at her desk from sheer overwork.

Reconstruction work on Arvum continues, the locals have rather defiantly requested that the Empire refrain from any direct assistance, as they are absolutely and very publicly determined to rebuild ‘on their own’. Somewhat bemused, you’ve acceded to that request and are quite impressed by how hard the locals are working on dragging themselves back to their feet, by hook or by crook.

You also receive more detailed reports from the monument collapse. It was indeed a case of the volcanic geology throwing a totally unexpected curveball at things, as shown by the site of the collapse now sporting an erupting asphalt volcano where the arch had been. Thankfully local authorities are well-prepared for such an eventuality and protective measures are rapidly put into place to channel the outflow of the new geologic feature.

On another note, the Pan Griffon Games have opened with the usual pomp and ceremony. Of course, this time there’s the added bit of, well, titillation as in accordance with the decision of the organizers of the Olympics starting this Olympiad all competitions will be conducted in the nude, apart from safety gear. The headlines are rather amusing, but not all that negative. Griffon culture is not very prudish at all, and since all participants in the games are adults and there are no deliberate sexual overtones to things, few people have any real issue with it. The Opening Ceremony itself is completely ‘family friendly’, and organizers have noted that edited versions of the broadcasts with pixelated nudity would be made available upon request, which silences the few objections that do exist.

There is a proposal on the table to expand the list of events for the Olympics by a rather significant amount thanks to the new participants all wanting to add their own ‘national specialty’ to the mix. Everything from various equestrian events, to table tennis, badminton, basketball, mountain biking, and weightlifting as the most prevalent requests. The Bourbons are stiffly opposed to any additional events, while the NRR and NRI have privately indicated to you that they are cautiously in support but will back your position.

Expanding the pool of events would give Team Griffon even greater opportunities to shine, but would dilute the individual events. It would also increase the expense of hosting an Olympics and running an Olympic team across all events, but would also significantly boost the positive effects of the Olympics on the various minor powers who would be competing.

Unfortunately your favorite lunatics in the Department of Periphery Studies have also reacted to the new format of the Olympics, and are currently holding their own ‘games’, but they have decided that it is appropriate to hold them while wearing outfits that have multiple religious groups rather bemused and torn between complaining and laughing. You personally are able to identify nun habits, bits of shrine maiden outfits, some accouterments related to shamanistic traditions, all underlaid by what appears to be neon colored burka, at least on the women. The men are wearing an ungodly combination of tuxedos, amazingly oversized and flamboyant hats that you are told are Korean in nature, and wetsuits. Events appear to include the 50 yard suitcase relay, the 25 yard coffee sprint, the 100 yard moonwalk, and trying to limbo without actually knowing that you are supposed to go under the limbo stick. It is truly surreal and bizarre.

There have been no sightings of Black Steel units since the latest Battle of Arvum. Which, unfortunately, is typical behavior for the Black Steel as they seem to take some time to lick their wounds before coming back for another round with new tricks up their sleeves.

You do receive a memo noting that the Empire has been somewhat slacking on expanding commercial space stations to the newly settled colonies. A consortium of manufacturers involved in the sector are offering to build out said stations at cost, in exchange for receiving guaranteed maintenance contracts. Since these particular companies are already the only ones involved in the maintenance and repair of the existing commercial stations, doing so wouldn’t really change much but would give them some assured stability.

Looking at the historical data it is pretty obvious that despite the significant up front cost of this project the short and long term upsides are enormous. These commercial space stations are major economic drivers to the systems where they are located, providing orbital warehousing and transfer facilities as well as encouraging greater orbital commerce. The tax revenues this year along with such a deal would pay for itself, but there is always a risk when engaging in such private-public partnerships that things could go off the rails.

While no new systems have reached ‘Core’ status this year, the Pustina system is getting rather close. There are some concerns related to the state of that system's general infrastructure, as it appears to be lagging a bit behind other systems at similar stages of development, but the Pustina system does have rather unique challenges in that regard, which makes it somewhat understandable. The local system government does promise to continue to work hard on upgrading said infrastructure before the Core designation is achieved.
