Turn 129 - Walk On Down

Admiral Fisher is exceptionally cross, as far as you can tell from the written word. He’s forwarded to you a memo from BuShips detailing the new Mashū-class Parasite Logistics Transport. You can easily imagine him gnashing his teeth and snarling in frustrated anger as the new design is, in fact, a superior logistics vessel to the old dual-use Saipans, which doubled as parasite carriers as well. It does speak well of the crotchety old admiral that, despite it being Not Invented Here, he’s still, with all the grace of a lion with a toothache, pushing it forward into production.

The Army’s procurement apparatus is showing even less grace to their new chief, leaking to the press about the elevated costs of the new medium battle armor suits and implying that this is purely in pursuit of ‘frivolous’ aesthetics. CID is attempting to identify the leakers, while you’ve given leave for General Zara to publish an Op Ed defending the new design, one of the major points is that the primary reason for the elevated cost is the more sophisticated sensor suite and interface, which gives significantly enhanced situational awareness in all conditions as well as providing an integral targeting data link analogous to Target Acquisition Gear.. Said op ed also points out the significant overall cost savings to the program, as it rigorously standardizes many internal components that previously were bespoke to the design due to the age of the base chassis.

You’ve seen the internal memos on that point, the older suit was a direct linear descendent of the original ‘standard’ battle armor suit, and still made use of the same actuators, control interfaces, power interfaces, and sensor suites as the original. In contrast, both the lighter and heavier suits had seen their original configurations completely retired in favor of newer models.

This does introduce one complication in that the contoured ‘seats’ designed into the upper surfaces of your battlemechs had been optimized for the older ‘square’ design, requiring minor redesign for the new ‘round’ design. Considering that all of your current Mech models are cycling through the refit lines as part of the ongoing Service Life Extension Program you really don’t see the issue.

General Zara has also sent you memos detailing updates to the Light, Heavy and Assault suits, all incorporating the same upgrades seen in the medium suit. You notice on these suits the deprecation of the battle claw in favor of standard manipulators. When you inquire about that you get a detailed use survey, showing that for all three classifications of suits the use of the battle claw was exceptionally rare while consuming a disproportionate amount of training and maintenance time. Only the medium suits routinely made use of the claw as they had the ‘golden’ combination of the mobility to get in close enough to make proper use of the claw and the toughness to survive combat in that environment. The heavier suits were too slow to make effective use of the claw, and the lighter suits were too fragile. In the rare event that the heavy suit would be in a situation where the claw would be useful, a pair of integrated cutting torches mounted in recesses on the wrists would provide equivalent functionality at a fraction of the mass.

You authorize extended service trials on the proposed new suits. There’s no pressing need for them, after all, as the current suits are perfectly functional, and an extended trial should reveal any flaws or weaknesses in these suits prior to them being placed into full production. You also instruct General Zara to begin work on a replacement for the old Spec Ops suit which is still based on the ancient Nighthawk design.

The Bourbon expedition is still moving, slowly, through your space en route to their date with destiny. The Navy is taking care to route them away from anything sensitive or important, or even mildly interesting, resulting in an extended voyage. The Bourbon admiral is quite understanding about it all, and in many ways you find that you actually regret what will likely happen to him and his crew. Unlike the feudal ships, he has been a thoroughgoing professional by all reports and very pleasant for your officers to work with.

You are quite relieved that the distinguished faculty of the Department of Periphery Studies have given up on their latest obsession quite quickly. A few days of constant pounding rain mixed with hail evidently put paid to their ‘naturist’ inclinations, to the celebration of just about everybody else in Griffsport.

Parliament is exceptionally quiet this year, with nothing but routine business crossing your desk. According to the Eldest, there aren’t any simmering plots in the smoke-filled rooms of the Senate, and the Delegates seem quite subdued for a change, at least in regards to visits from the Good Idea Fairy. The typical off-year politicking and such banal activities as naming bridges, libraries, and post offices after themselves seems to be all that they are capable of at the moment.

And then it was time for the budget meeting.

Amaunet is lounging in her usual spot. “Padrone, rather than repeat myself yet again…” and the big cat nods to her assistants, who start holding up cue cards repeating the big cat’s usual opening spiel. You can’t help it, you start laughing as the big cat churrs in amusement. “More seriously, Padrone, we’d like to ask for one more year without surveying, just to make sure our forces are fully ready to go and exploit anything we may find.” She then nods to your new Army CoS.

The rather peppery Italian takes the stage. “We’re continuing to maintain and optimize Your army, Your Majesty. I would also request funding for a project to further enhance our logistics efficiency across the board.” He pauses, checking his notes, then glances over at the glaring figure of Admiral Fisher and visibly decides not to poke the bear, and instead sits down as his aids bring up the Army’s budget requests.

General Perkins then takes over. “Your Majesty, the Aerospace Force continues to need to expand as quickly as possible in order to cover our responsibilities. Thankfully our training pipelines are full with eager cadets, so we’ll have the butts to put in the seats, but we need the seats in the first place.”

Admiral Fisher remains seated, nodding to Commodore Savić to handle the briefing once more.

“Your Majesty, the fleet concurs with Minister Amaunet’s recommendation to hold off on survey activity this year. While we have made good our losses from the recent battle, we would like to strengthen our formations before going back on the offensive.” She checks her notes. “That being said, BuShips and BuLog would like to thank General Zara for the Mashū-class design, we will be building a batch of them for testing purposes this year and hopefully they will perform as expected.”

You blink, because you can sense some layers there to what the Commodore said, and Zara does as well because, despite the evident ‘praise’, he’s bristling like his own mental antennae are quivering. The Commodore just leaves the rather bland and inoffensive statement hanging, then continues her briefing as if she hadn’t thrown a bit of shade at General Zara by implying that the new design might fail to perform as expected.

Once the military has finished, Elizabeth stands up for her presentation. “Your Majesty, unlike Amaunet I didn’t prepare flash cards to skip the usual bits, so consider them said.” She smiles a bit at the chuckles. “To begin with, DoME has teams free, they have free time on their hands, I think we can all agree this is dangerous.”

Dr Severino is next. “Your Majesty, we actually have two proposals for this budget year, on top of the ongoing outreach efforts. First off, with the Olympics coming up next year, we’d like to ask you to fund sports camps like we have in the past in the hope of boosting our performance in the Games. Second of all, it has been a few years since we’ve hosted a cultural festival, we’d like to focus on Maori culture this time around, with your approval.”

Tiberius is looking dangerously cheerful, which has you a bit worried. “Your Majesty, apart from the continued expansion of the Civil Service, we’ve got nothing for you this year.” His eyes are sparkling a bit, giving you a sense that there’s a prank involved somehow, but for the life of you you haven’t spotted it yet.

Grace gives her insouciant colleague a ‘look’, trademark, patent pending, all rights reserved. “Your Majesty, we have one free R&D team at the moment, and they’ve requested that we coordinate with the Navy and Aerospace Force on fine-tuning our doctrine in regards to handling ASF swarms.”

Neither your Intelligence nor Justice ministers are present for the meeting, as both are representing the Empire at conferences off world at the moment and had previously indicated to you that they had no pressing budget requests this year outside their usual budgets.

-----

You cannot readily recall a year that was as quiet as this one has been for a long, long time. There are still no reports of Black Steel activity, no major crisis, no shocking news, no attacks, and even Parliament has been behaving. You find yourself rather paranoid, waiting for the other shoe to drop and getting more nervous by the day as it doesn’t happen.

But nothing is happening. The most interesting bit of news is that the sports camps organized to assist with training for the Olympics saw a bit of news, as the attendees voted to adopt the rules for the next Olympics after the one next year in order to start acclimating themselves to those conditions. The papers had a one-day field day, then moved on to the far more interesting news about local firefighters rescuing kittens from trees.

Even reading the various reports is somewhat boring. Things happened, in the same old way, and we completed, in the same old way. There were ‘challenges’ that seem to mostly involve DoME finishing a raft of projects a year early thanks to the improvements to terraforming technology, which will make things interesting… next year.

You liven things up a bit by taking the time to visit as many commissioning ceremonies as you can manage, and get a brief moment of amusement at the expression on Admiral Fisher’s face when he has to admit that the new logistics dropships are actually ‘acceptable’ even after they are completed. You are pretty certain that he’ll have indigestion after that admission, judging by the dyspeptic looks he’s bestowing on all around, as if daring people to comment on his statement.

That being said, the new vessels are reportedly quite well optimized for their role, being able to carry even the largest individual spare parts (naval gauss cannon barrels) and handle them appropriately and easily. The new vessels pair quite handily with the Sacramento-class replenishment ships which are quickly becoming the mainstay of your fleet train.

In part, perhaps, to make up for that embarrassment, Admiral Fisher does present plans for a new escort carrier for Home Fleet. Intended as a command vessel for the corvette and raider formations, the White Plains-class escort carrier is surprisingly well equipped for a 240,000 ton vessel. A full wing of ASFs and a solid defensive armament, along with plenty of crew space, a generous cargo hold, and massive fuel reserves allow the proposed vessel to operate extremely efficiently. The only downside you can think of is that it will be another demand placed on your ASF production.

You send a memo to General Perkins requesting that he determine if the Aerospace Force will be able to support the production of such escort carriers, and if so what air wing would be most effective.

And then it is back to being bored. You spend time with the family raptors, whiling away many hours in games of fetch. You spend time with Bastet and the other palace Grifftigers. You even spend many hours cuddling the family lystrosaurus.

In a way the quiet is relaxing, despite the apprehension. You manage to get caught up on your sleep, you’ve tried a number of new dishes, spent time socializing with staff members you normally only see in passing, and engage in some of your old hobbies that you’ve been ignoring for years.

You are certain that your grandfather would absolutely hate this, and would likely manufacture a crisis just to keep from boredom. But your kids are doing well, your grandkids are adorable, and the Empire seems to be ticking along like a well maintained clock.

It’s a few minutes before midnight on New Years Eve when the Palace alert sirens go off. The Black Steel are attacking Arvum in force.

Happy New Year…

Turn 130 - Cryin’

Combat Report - Arvum

The Black Steel assault on Arvum is peculiar in several ways, showing tactics not before seen by the Black Steel. For one thing, they jumped in well away from the traditional zenith or nadir point, nor did they use any pirate points, instead multiple formations jumped in at various points outside the KF limit, six in all.

Four of them immediately began thrusting into the system, at the ranges in question it is very difficult to get any hard data about their composition, but the formations have around two hundred major combatants in each. The formations are currently rather dispersed, which would make a KF jump attack pretty much useless, but have cores of capital ships surrounded by escorts.

The remaining two formations are also moving, but not in system, rather they seem to be moving orthogonally on a course that will not intersect the jump limit anytime soon, and both formations are absolutely enormous with over a thousand discrete point sources in each. They also jumped in far further out, and only the sheer size of the formation allowed for it to be spotted in the first place thanks to the ginormous KF emergence pulse generated on their arrival. They are also in completely amorphous formations, with little to no rhyme or reason to their positioning as far as you can tell from this distance.

The fact that you can only track them via neutrino emissions thanks to the sheer distance makes things even less precise. You know they are there, that they have active fusion plants, and are moving, but you can’t tell anything else about them.

Home Fleet has massed their units, ferrying in additional flotillas of Artemis planetary defense craft as well as concentrating their defensive forces. The Grand and Expeditionary Fleets are remaining in reserve at the moment, ready to jump in to reinforce en masse. Admiral Bremman reports that he is confident that he can defend the system in conjunction with the fixed defenses. Admiral de Palo and Admiral McEvedy likewise report full readiness for Grand and Expeditionary Fleets respectively, while Admiral Somers of Strike Fleet has requested permission to take his relatively light force out to aggressively scout the distant formations.

[]Approve having Strike Fleet recointer the distant Black Steel formations

Morale in the Arvum system appears to be quite high, despite the juggernaut bearing down on them. The system militia and garrison are fully deployed and civil defense measures are fully in place. Despite this, people are still cheerfully going about their lives, with the general attitude that if they let the Black Steel dictate how they feel about things then they are giving the psychopathic cyborgs an unearned victory.

You also get reports that the NRI is responding to the attack by shifting a full classis of their latest destroyers and corvettes to the Arvum system in accordance with your Alliance. The flagship of the formation is something you had only gotten very fragmented reports on up to this point, the first full scale cruiser of the NRI fleet. Unlike the corvette and destroyer, the cruiser is actually broadside focused and, unusually for the NRI, is not solely armed with gauss weaponry, but rather has a rather potent naval autocannon battery, albeit weapons that rely on gauss technology for part of their operation. They only have a single one of them, and the NRI ambassador is a bit smug about it.

It turns out that your intelligence agency did know about the project, but hadn’t considered it a high priority as they’d been getting regular updates straight from the NRI about it. Your ambassador to the NRI hadn’t seen it as an issue, as the Foreign Ministry had been gently prodding the NRI to upgrade their capabilities for decades now. As such, all the reports about it had been lost in the noise, never making their way to your desk.

The NRR, meanwhile, has sent a full ‘group’ of 12 wings of their Gripen ASF to Arvum as part of their commitment to the alliance. Since you have the same ASF in service yourself, your people are intimately familiar with its capabilities.

At the current rate of advance, the Black Steel formation won’t be within actual engagement range for months, which is again rather unusual as the Black Steel usually is far more aggressive than this.

-----

Despite all of the worries from the Black Steel on Arvum, life does go on. The Olympics have opened with a quite spectacular Opening Ceremony. You take the time away from the war room to watch the festivities with your kids and grandkids. Corralling a bunch of rambunctious grade-schoolers during the parade is almost more entertaining than the show itself, and you have absolutely no idea how the tykes could possibly have gotten so much candy, you certainly had nothing to do with it.

Your husband, on the other hand, is guilty, just look at the smug look on his face, guilty you say! The grandkids know better than to dispute your version of events with all the self-centered conniving brilliance of the breed. After all, if they ‘narc’ on you, you might not sneak them candy in the future.

Not that you had anything to do with it in the first place, you’d never conspire to get the grandkids hyper in order to get suitable vengeance on your kids for how they behaved at that age. Not you, perish the thought.

Over the ensuing weeks it becomes obvious that the sports camps were an enormously beneficial investment, as the competition is incredibly fierce. While Team Griffon is doing very well in terms of the medal count, that domination conceals just how competitive the individual events are. In women’s athletics, for example, less than 3 points separates a gold medal from no medal at all, and the total margin of victory in terms of finish times is less than a quarter of a second.

For the first time ever Team Griffon’s gymnastics teams actually sweep the event, but even there it is by the slimmest of margins, with the scores being separated by the thousandths of a point. You are quite impressed by the sportsmanship on display as well, as even though they lost the NRI gymnasts enthusiastically cheer for their rivals and after the match things devolve into a massive four way celebration among the teams without regard for who’s uniforms they are wearing.

Considering that the next time gymnastics is competed for in four years there won’t be uniforms…

There’s also some excellent economic news, two systems, Grand View and Novolar, have achieved Core status thanks to their excellent economic growth combined with a large and growing population. While the celebrations are somewhat muted, mostly due to what is happening in the Arvum system, they are still quite welcome. On a more practical note, that gives you two more systems in which to build larger shipyards, which is always an excellent bit of news.

Finally you get some memos from BuShips. In light of the current situation you don’t get an actual briefing on the designs like usual, but the presentations are fairly straightforward.

First off, a new light cruiser intended to supplement the Guiseppe Garibaldi-class in the fleet escort role. Uncompromisingly optimized to swat enemy ASFs out of the skies in job lots, and creating a virtual ‘no fly zone’ for enemy missiles, the Worcester-class bristles with batteries of naval and sub-capital lasers in fast track mounts, giving it a truly amazing amount of firepower.

Meanwhile for Home Fleet there is the White Plains-class Escort Carrier, a corvette scaled carrier able to easily keep up with the corvettes and raiders that currently comprise that formation. Supporting an entire wing of ASFs on such a small platform was a challenge but the designers were able to achieve it, albeit at the cost of long range firepower.

This feels like a divide and conquer strategy designed to draw in and distract our fleets. this is too blatant and I would rather we not fall or it.
