Your first impression of General Zara is hardly the most positive one in the history of the world. Within 30 seconds of entering your office he’d taken offense at the quality of the wine your steward served him, then grumbled about the ‘piss poor’ espresso, before with a huff taking over the espresso machine from a highly offended servant and preparing… the most perfectly brewed cup of espresso cappuccino you’d ever tasted in your life. It’s as if in the space of a minute he’d managed to distill a cup of espresso into everything a cup of espresso should be and removed everything that it should not be.

And he then proceeds to insult Admiral Fisher’s hair by offering to send him to a ‘proper’ stylist, who might enjoy the ‘challenge’, had General Perkins glaring hatefully at him with a few pungent comments about how the sartorial standards of the Aerospace Force were obviously in a competition with DoME to see just how low they can go, had Commodore Savić looking she’s less than a second away from slapping him, senior officer or no, after he loudly wonders if the Navy knows how to design a cargo vessel or if they just take the guns off of one of their ‘bathtub battleships’ and call it a day… and he manages this before he even sits down.

And proceeds to give you a fifteen minute lecture on the minutiae of military logistics as applied to the Army that distills down every single challenge faced by the military across all branches, with concrete proposals to resolve the difficulties, lists of suppliers who had proven ‘barely adequate’ which appears to be the equivalent of loud hosannas and paeans of praise, along with specifications for what the Army requires from the Navy for logistics purposes in about thirty different potential scenarios, neatly categorized, indexed, and cross-referenced to an exceptionally high standard.

And then criticizes your shoes for being clearly chosen more for fashion than comfort, segues that into biting commentary on how whoever designed the field, dress, and mess uniforms for the military was obviously smoking recreational chemicals and should be promptly spaced without bothering with a trial for the crimes against comfort, utility, and proper military fashion they committed, and concludes by demanding that this horrific disaster be rectified immediately.

You have a distinct sense that General Bradley is laughing at you right now. Amaunet certainly is. By the same token, you can’t disagree with any of his points. The uniforms are a mess, the less said about the pointed shoulder device from hell the better for one thing, and you distinctly remember just how uncomfortable the boots you’d been issued had been, to the point that every single Mech regiment had used private funds to procure commercial boots to wear when you weren’t wearing the pilot’s armor.

And to be honest the infantry battle armor is rather goofy looking, all flat plates and right angles except for the head, which is a big dome like structure with internal view screens to supplement the fixed vision slits. The pilot armor is much sleeker, same with the naval crewman armor, but the infantry suits are, when viewed from a fashion angle, rather a disaster.

Admiral Fisher finally rises to the bait, and somewhat snidely inquires if Zara has any solutions or if he’s just bellyaching. You realize that meetings with these two will be… fiery… and feel an incipient headache as Zara promptly opens his briefcase and slaps down another folder, this one with detailed recommendations for new Army uniforms, as well as a data chip which the General says contains the specifications for an improved standard suit of battle armor that is apparently ten kilos lighter, has advanced sensors as standard equipment, with improved anti-personnel and equal anti-vehicular firepower. And which doesn’t, in the General’s words, look like something put together by a two year old playing with blocks

You finally step in, having had just about enough of your senior officers squabbling like school kids, and manage to silence Zara with a glare and a slight curl of the lip, which oddly enough causes him to suddenly grin like a schoolboy and nod respectfully to you. That must be what Bradley meant by ‘no heat’, Zara will push, but won’t resent being jerked up short nor is he really interested in being provocative just to be provocative, everything he does is far more calculated than it appears, and always serves a purpose. Plus he likely is as good as he seems to think he is.

It’ll keep budget meetings from being boring at least.

You read the reports coming from Grace. The biotech R&D work on improving genetic engineering techniques had a breakthrough, isolating a genetic sequence that made crops vulnerable to various blight conditions. Careful testing showed no harmful side effects to modifying that sequence and the latest techniques that they’d developed allowed for rapid yet extraordinarily comprehensive testing to validate the modification.

Terraforming work has been very successful, with DoME reporting that their work in the Nox system has resulted in the system being declared ecologically self-sustaining for human life without the need for further terraforming work. Nuova Fortezza and Neuthüringen likewise report progress, although further work remains to be done in both systems. Optimization work in the Novolar system has also been completed.

The biggest news from DoME concerns Shin Tōkyō, where they report that they’ve fully completed all Arcology base construction. From here on out, local construction and expansion will suffice as the underlying base for the city-planet has been fully built out by DoME.

Reading the reports concerning the construction of new naval shipyards across the Empire yields uniformly positive, if a bit repetitive, news. There are only so many ways to report the successful expansion of naval construction docks after all.

You do take the time to visit a number of commissioning ceremonies here in the Griffon system, partially to gauge the morale of the Navy for yourself. You find yourself cautiously optimistic as, despite the staggering casualties the Navy has suffered over the course of the war against the Black Steel you get a sense of pride at holding the line combined with a determination to get the job done.

You also receive one piece of economic news that cheers you up greatly. The timely economic support and humanitarian relief operations in the Neuhessen system have turned what was initially projected to be a nearly 50% reduction in local system GDP to ‘only’ just over a 5% net loss, cushioning the blow and setting up the system for a full recovery. You make a point of highlighting the positive effects of the massive outpouring of charitable support in your annual Christmas message to the Empire.

Despite all of the setbacks this year, you are feeling quite confident in the future.

Turn 129 - Flesh

The year starts with some excellent news as the Feurstem system has been officially reclassified as a Core system, giving you a solid boost to your production capabilities. The local populace celebrates quite raucously, although there are no reports of any actual mayhem. You send a congratulatory message to the citizens of the system.

You also get some bad news to go with the good as a number of banks experience bank runs following lower than expected earnings reports. Thankfully all of them have sufficient liquidity that they are in no danger of actual failure. It appears to simply be a case of depositors getting spooked by the earnings report and pulling their money out ‘just in case’ in a classic case of financial contagion. Hopefully the situation will correct itself without need for Imperial intervention.

The announcement about the upcoming rules changes for the Olympics has resulted in some amusing oddities, arguments, and general good-natured ribaldry. Some of the prospective athletes for two cycles out are pretending to whine about requiring the cameras to only get their ‘good’ sides, with others gleefully teasing that they don’t have a good side. The general consequence of that has usually been nerf pistols at 20 paces, although the fencers have settled things with shinai-induced enthusiastic bonking.

Unfortunately for your sanity, or lack thereof, the Department of Periphery Studies has been attracted to the news story in a most annoyingly hilarious manner, as the prestigious tenured scholars of that renowned department are ‘publishing’ so-called ‘studies’ advocating for a universal adoption of these rules. That would be minorly amusing, except that they’ve decided to ‘lead by example’...

And are doing so while parading around the plazas and parks surrounding the palace.

Complete with trips to the Palace gift shops.

You are very grateful that your office is far above the ground and well away from those offenses against good taste.

On the military front there has been no real activity from the Black Steel. A single corvette was spotted well outside the KF limit in the Baddorando system. Other than that it appears that the Black Steel is licking their wounds, giving you a bit of a breather to continue to build up your forces.

The Bourbon expedition to GX-F19 is underway. This is requiring some clever routing and navigational assistance as, in multiple areas, the Bourbon forces are having to jump to deep space, recharge with their reactors, then continue on due to the exceptionally short jump ranges of most of their units.

Admiral de Palo has met with the Bourbon admiral in command of the unit and was rather impressed by him and his crew, unfortunately his ship is the only ‘royal’ vessel in the expedition, the rest are from the various feudal lords. In particular, Admiral de Palo is quite scathing about the leader of the forces from Nouvelle Picardie, who glories in the title of Grand Amiral du Soleil Levant et Couchant, or Grand Admiral of the Rising and Setting Sun and who, apparently, requires the assistance of his servants to get dressed and undressed, and, according to de Palo, likely requires servant’s assistance, a navigation computer, three navigation waypoints, multiple spotters, and copious amounts of luck to find his own backside with even a single hand.

The Bourbon admiral in charge of this space-going disaster is quite used to the uselessness of all of his subordinates, and has confessed to de Palo that the primary goal of this mission is to get rid of them all, either because they’ll manage to get their silly heads blown off by the Black Steel or they’ll give the Admiral enough of an excuse to have them executed for gross impropriety and insubordination. Indeed, the good admiral has a sufficient number of pre-approved blank authorizations for said executions in his possession to wipe out the entire expedition, twice over.

De Palo notes that unlike the feudal vessels, the lone Royal ship is extremely well designed, well maintained, and with superb officers and crews. She rates them as only lacking in actual combat experience in comparison to your own forces, which is pretty high praise indeed.

In the process of providing navigational assistance you get some excellent scans of the feudal vessels, and you can already hear Admiral Fisher ranting about it. One ship, from the Nouvelle Breton formation, has the largest transit drive in relation to the rest of the hull possible, and is armed with a truly astonishing number of machine guns. There’s another that seems to specialize in short-range missiles, another with a wild hodgepodge of flamers, lasers, and autocannons along with a massive reinforced prow, obviously for ramming. No two ships, among the feudal formations, are similar enough to each other to be considered a coherent ‘class’ in the first place.

Which makes the Royal ship’s quite rational armament of heavy naval lasers backed up by the heaviest possible naval autocannons a refreshing whiff of sanity in a sea of madness. According to De Palo, the Royal Navy currently has completely monopolized all naval shipbuilding capacity in the Kingdom, and are supposedly focusing on just four different classes of ship, a destroyer, a cruiser, a carrier and a battleship.

In other foreign news, the small diplomatic parties you’ve sent out have started to file their first reports. The little statelets to the galactic northeast of you are, at most, one or two systems in size, with many being confined to their home planets. Trade is sporadic and relies on nomadic clans, but there are some systems which maintain their own production, refit, and repair capacity, just not at a very high level. Much of this capacity has built up over the last fifty years or so, but is generally limited to dropships and a few small jumpship designs, with no compact core ships at all.

Many are somewhat irritated with you, to be honest, and you can’t truly blame them. The pirate enclaves that you drove out of your space have been a plague upon them. In the past they’d get raided maybe once or twice a decade, now there are near constant small scale raids somewhere in the region with some of the small polities becoming effectively pirate havens rather than suffer raids themselves.

The diplomats have sent a request for you to send some small naval squadrons out that way to engage in anti-piracy sweeps in order to build goodwill with the locals. They’ve also requested the deployment of some ground forces in order to assist the locals with building up their own defenses and thus further build goodwill and foster better relations.

[]ActionArgumentEffect
[]Approve anti-piracy sweeps and patrolsWe have 75 Fubuki-class destroyers that are relatively obsolete compared to the newer Battle-class. Therefore, sending several destroyer flotillas made up of Fubukis will not materially weaken our naval strength.
This way, when we do expand in that direction we will have friends waiting for us, allowing us to diplomatically assimilate them into the Empire rather than requiring us to conquer them by force.
  • Assigns the 75 remaining Fubuki-class destroyers to anti-piracy patrol duty in the expansion region.
  • Assigns 8 Infantry Divisions and 6 Regimental Combat Team Divisions to potentially assist friendly systems in the region in developing their own defenses as well as engage in hearts & minds operations.

[]They’re on their own, you need those forces hereEven if the Fubukis are old, they are still perfectly capable destroyers that are useful against the Black Steel. We can’t afford to throw away any ships on some quixotic pirate hunt, and we’ll just have to conquer those petty states when we go through. No big deal, can’t be helped.

Given that the increased pirate raids are at least indirectly due to our actions, we should do what we can to help, especially since these guys have no WarShips of their own. Just think how screwed we would have been if pirate raids like this had been 'bumped' our way when we were their size.

Most likely outcome of this is we get a lot of planets / systems looking to join us, especially as when they find out the level comfort our people love in, it’ll probably sound like paradise.

A small obsolete force of old equipment sent to scout and conduct diplomacy? I forsee no potential for shenanigans.

Remind me, what are Infantry and RCT divisions made up of again? Also will Grifftigers and their battle armor be a part of this “peacekeeping” force?

Intergovernmental Panic Room, Month 3 of The Invasion

Head Secretariat Glitterhoof neighed to signal the start of the meeting as is tradition. Leaders of various nations of Pancor 4 looked tense around room. Over the past few years, pirate raids have intensified to the point that the Combination of Nations have moved from a diplomatic joke to a legitimate institution. The brush wars that defined the previous era were gone in favor of surviving the next raid that could come in months rather than years.

Grand Puba Simon, leader of the Esteemed Wise Men and Only Men, rose to begin his summary. The Wise Men came to prominence after the Great University Explosions of centuries past. Fortunately, the College Houses for the Community of Feta Ionia Gamma and Beta Ligma Alpha survived the catastrophe, due in part to their unwillingness to accept lessers into their ranks.

"As you all are aware, approximately six months ago, all pirate activity ceased in the local sector. Our esteemed Wise Men investigated the cause but were unable to discern the coming storm.

Last More For Chris Day, strange ships were detected in the other edges of the system, our efforts to contact them were only met with a jumble of strange sounds that seemed to ape at being words. The Wise Men concluded that these were alien conquerors, and the pirates were actually refugees forced to raid us after being driven from their worlds. Pirate prisoners such as the now popular Keelhaul Peterson backed up this story when offered amnesty. Now Jackhammer General Phillis will brief us on the first days of the invasion."

The Jackhammer General was an imposing man, having a beard down to his knees as any man of command should. His right shoulder war adorned with all manner of honor ropes and the only one in the room allowed to carry the famed Pancor Jackhammer, the planetary symbol of might after their voluntary migration from their homeland.

"Gentlemen, two months ago the alien fleet reached dropship range with our planet. Seeing the imminent threat, we allied with the remaining refugee fleet, repaired their ships, and launched a first strike against the invading monsters.

Unfortunately, their advanced weaponry annihilated those brave heroes, but the damage they inflicted allowed us valuable time to rearm and prepared to resist this invasion. They seem to mimic our technology, no doubt lacking the innovative nature of humanity. Although their larger territory and various alien thralls are giving them a temporary advantage, such as during the Battle of Blackbark Brewery. Xenobiologist Herman will go into these various pitiful creatures."

Xenobiologist Herman was an oddity among the men of the summit, having earned his position through cowardly intelligence and papers, rather than more traditional paths to influence such as bull wrestling tournaments of politics or beer pong debates of the Wise Men. However, needs must in the face of this crisis and Herman claims to have read books dating back to Terra on the subject of sentient aliens.

"As you can see from these pictures, we have identified various races among the aliens' forces. Their infantry seems to be a bipedal race with large, bulbous heads as seen by their ridiculously large helmets. These soldiers likely have poor eyesight due to needing sharp right angles on the uniforms in order to identify their allies. We suspect these aliens are clone solders, this is supported by the fact that these solders sometimes have giant claws on one arm, no doubt a product of genetic engineering.

The aliens employ various ferocious beasts enhanced through their technology. The most dangerous are large feline beasts given suits of powered armor that have ravaged our forces. We thought they were just quad mechs until the were observed removing their helmets and grooming themselves. We believe the weaponry on the suits to be remote operated back at their bases, as there is no way these beasts could learn to operate such complex technology. Identifying and neutralizing these operators should be the top priority of our special forces.

The final example I must ask you to prepare yourselves as this is the most abhorrent. We observed this specimen near the dropships and had to stop our observers from revealing themselves in disgust."

When the image came on screen various shouts rang through the room and even Secretariat Glitterhoof could not remain quiet at what was before them. It took several minutes to calm everyone down before Herman could resume.

"As you can see, the aliens have taken human captives and combine them with animal DNA and produce these hybrids. What's worse, every hybrid we have observed has been female. We can only conclude that the aliens intend to genetically alter all of humanity into these hybrids so we will lack the will and the masculinity to resist them!"

After several more minutes of chaotic yelling, sounds of indignation, and an accidental concussion via mule kick on Glitterhoof's part, Jackhammer General Phillis quieted the room by firing his signature weapon into the ceiling.

"Gentlemen, in light of this horrifying piece of news, I propose we unify the military efforts and our refugee allies into a new multi-national army. This army will be dedicated to resisting efforts from both within and without. The Federated Suns tried to rob our ancestors of their masculinity with their effeminate ideals of equality and our ancestors told them no! Now these aliens have come to do the same and they shall receive the exact same reply! Let the alien invaders fear the wrath of the new and mighty MCOM!"

Fun Facts about Pancor 4

Pancor was a thought experiment to take an outcast group from an Inner Sphere House and extrapolate what would happen after a few centuries in the Periphery. I chose those who left the Fed Suns due to opposing their stance on equality. Then had all their smart people poached/stabbed/blown up by Comstar and the resulting technological and cultural degradation.

Pancor's original settlers originally left the Federated Suns due to their opposition to their protection of human rights and equality based on racial objections, not misogynistic ones. Misogyny was actually pretty unpopular among the settlers in the first generations.

Pancor's settlers were composed of several different well-funded colonization efforts by the insular elements of different races. These groups wound up settling the same planet through coincidence, navigation errors, and various forms of Miscommunication. This fact along with the small amount of settleable land and racist tendencies of the various groups resulted in Pancor's history being a near constant line of low to high intensity conflict between various nations and races that destroyed a lot of potential and knowledge base for the planet.

Through close proximity, constant interaction, and a loss of technology, Pancor's population eventually homogenized over time. The population lacked the ability to differentiate between each other's groups which lead to a period of instability and riots for the planet given racial purity was a founding principle of a lot of those nations. Most of the few Universities and libraries remaining were mysteriously destroyed during this period.

Rather than accept this upward cultural drift, various local power blocks decided to go sideways and rewrite the history books to say that they left the Fed Suns due to their stance of equality on women, not races, hoping to retain their power by providing a consistent historical narrative and link to their ancestors. Racial purity was replaced with bravado and masculinity as a nation’s core tenant and things settled back into brush wars. This process was helped along by "Grand Revelations" by the newly ascendant Wise Men.

Pancor was used as a recruiting world during the transition period by the more dogmatic factions in Comstar due to their cultural penchant for closed-mindedness and fanaticism. This was framed as charitable efforts to the other factions within the organization. Eventually the misogyny in the planet's culture became a political liability and recruiting efforts were gradually drawn down along with any material support for the world. The most notable achievement for Pancor recently is as a footnote from a Spheroid-centric Comstar scholar’s paper on why no notable civilization could rise from the Periphery.

I may prefer killing Black Steel, but I still like killing pirates too. And the potential for diplomatic annexation is never a bad thing.

Though I would like to mention that I'd prefer at least to add some sort of backstop to the force, destroyers are very useful at the end of the day, but a few cruisers to serve as flagships or the like would not be a mistake. Not to mention that they should be far more impressive to the locals, and a display of the force that we can spare while in the middle of the war.

Keep in mind that to people who *don't* have compact core WarShips, a WarShip destroyer is equal in tonnage to the absolute largest JumpShips possible (and five times the size of even the very largest DropShips), bristling from bow to stern with order-of-magnitude superior armoring and weapons.
