there's a very good argument that doing that is a criminal action and should be treated accordingly.
It seems very easy to explain: if an off-the-shelf medicine is effective, then they don't get to make huge profits from their new patent medicine/vaccine/whatever.
Same reason you keep seeing new funny names for medicines for things that a plain old medicine would still work fine for.

Honestly, I hope you're right; a lot less people would die if you were. Personally though, I've watched the entire pandemic become overtaken by partisan politics to the point where I don't believe most people actually know what's true, and what isn't; they just go with whatever best matches what their "side" in the ongoing political and cultural struggle wants to be true.
I believe there will be a spike; I also believe that the Democrats will exaggerate its size and impact to justify implementing more draconian measures, ostensibly meant to combat the pandemic, and that Republicans will insist there is no spike so they can justify demanding that everyone should go back to work, and participate in the economy again. Power and Control on one side, Profit and the Economy on the other; and neither cares one iota about the corpses piling up.

It seems that everyone in the world apart from UK is lowering their restrictions. Here in Poland pretty much no one is wearing masks anymore, for example.

That's the theory. In reality, being stuck in lockdown with your significant other seems to lead to stress and breakups far more, if the numbers circulating since this all began are true. I don't trust a thing the WHO says these days, and it is in China's interest for the US to get a second wave that is as big as possible.
