The best thing thing Stalin did for Russia was die.

Now I'm imagining some ancient Soviet-era mainframe computer deep in a mountain bunker somewhere in the Urals, running a program that emulates Comrade Stalin.

The project of course was so secret that all the thousands of people they had loading all the punched cards were executed afterwards...

"We will have immortality. We will live in these special mainframes."

"Until a peasant with a magnet and absolutely no fucks to give, comes along to erase the hard drives."

As amusing as that would be, there’s no way they wouldn’t have some form of automated security.

Anything automated will need people to maintain it.
You assume that they won’t have even that mostly or completely automated. Or that they won’t need one or two people at most who can easily be kept loyal by favors or threat of force against them or their loved ones.

"AI-upload immortality" basically just means you die, and an AI simulation of you takes your place.
This is the same issue I have with "clone immortality" -- it's not you as you, but another copy of you. It's like having an identical twin with your memories.

You can copy and paste a file, and while the copy has everything the original had, it's still a copy. Deleting the original file will erase that file, even if the information is still there in the copied file and even though it'd work just as well as the original file. It's still not the original file.

Same deal with teleportation in fiction, unless it's specifically stated that it's actually you being transported and not a copy that thinks/believes it's you.

There was a fringe horror prompt on /r/writingprompts months ago where a girl and her rich friend use the new transporters to travel to one city from another because they're in a hurry -- she sees her friend get painfully (she screamed) atomized, as in killed, while a reconstituted copy walks out the pod in City B no worse for wear. She ends up ringing her up on her phone, asking what the delay was because they had a lot of shopping to do.

The assistant operating the transportation pod just shrugged and said that the original dying was good from a legal standpoint. The MC just walks away in dazed horror as her confused friend-copy is asking her what's wrong.

Yeah, that some people see that as immortality is utterly baffling to me.
Ok, you guys are familiar with what a Holocron is, yes?

Think that, but with the neural patterns of the person directly imprinted into it using modern brain-mapping tech.

Why do you think there are so many 'implant' type medical devices getting advertised these days.

Sure, hardware like servers can be threatened, however, AI can jump servers once in the net, and then it becomes a matter of trying to isolate it and make sure you've actually killed it for good.

It may not be organic immortality, however it is very likely humanity is moving towards a future of uploaded-AIs, with the human body being viewed as a vestigial organ/'cocoon' for new AI minds.

So...creating a copy?

That sounds more like a cavalcade of arrogant machines/impudent children to my mind.

'Arrogant machines' with infinite life-spans and the personalities/minds of their up-loaders.

Also, what is 'impudent' about the idea of AI-upload-based immortality?

Because it isn't immortality and these ghosts aren't actually real people. They're just alarmingly good parrots.
We get into some really interesting philosophical questions with this one.

The continuity of consciousness really makes things iffy.

Maybe they're no longer humans. I'll grant that. But if the consciousness is continuous, and they remain unique and conscious, they're... something more than just a computer. But not human.

This will be a huge philosophical question in our future if technology continues in the current direction its going.

If the uploaded personality has a continuity of consciousness, has all the uploaders memories and personality traits, and has the ability to continue to interact with the world and form new memories and experiences, it is more than just a 'parrot'.

Also, if the AI can download into newly cloned bodies, which really isn't that much of a stretch if you have the money, time, and connections to allow it, then it could become a 'upload/download at will' situation.

I'd say you ought to start looking closer at the world of Ghost in the Shell, because that is the sort of near-future tech and society we are likely headed for, if we don't end up going down the Fallout route instead.

And that route may just end up with 'brain-in-a-jar' immortality, which itself is not actually that different from AI-upload-based immortality in the way it interacts with the world.

Not sure what the proper term for an uploaded human consciousness would be, but it is more than just an AI you are right.

Moreover, most of the discussion surrounding AI uploading ignores the existence of the soul, and how that might interact with the creation of an exact copy of you. Maybe it's like giving it a player 2 to control, or perhaps the copy is your next reincarnation.

It will end when the sheep wake up and demand a Nuremberg 2.0 for the perpetrators.

Frankly I think thet the global neolib pack of greedy holier than thou lemings has gone too far and between the recession, the economic crisis and the split off of the BRICS the chickens will be coming home to roost.
Nuremberg 2.0 is for commies. So,it would be Nuremberg 3.0

And,BRICS are made from commie state, failed commie state, caste state ,Leftist state/Brasilia/ and racist state.
There is no hope for World from them.

You know what that means, Eastern Yurup will have to take over the world and make it Slav.

We outlaw all seating, make only tracksuits be allowed wear and will have 200 flavors of bakes sunflower seeds and the only music to exist shall be turbofolk and derivatives.

Yes, there can be haven on earth!!!
