"Woke" Franchises

To me it feels like pandering and tokenism as these shoe-horned characters tend to be poorly written or are inflated in terms of capability and skill with all the other characters nerfed to prop them up (a more modern example is Rey knowing more about the Millennium Falcon than Han Solo who flew the the thing for decades).

This comes off as cheap and as though Rowling is pandering, so that she can say that her books were ahead of the times in terms of "progressiveness" and "wokeness." This just seems very patronizing to me. What do you guys think?

I think plenty of SJW type creators are trying to be the “We did this first!” or “We are among the few doing this!” or “We’re fucking revolutionary!”

There were already lots of minority characters or women and non-white characters in fiction that people liked and regularly appeared, difference was that their creators weren’t constantly making such a big deal about being “revolutionary” or being the “first ever”

JK Rowling’s just trying to get attention, that’s it, I think she hasn’t written much or made a big success after Harry Potter

If you actually want a truly good woke series, go and read the Safehold series by David Weber. The main character is trans afterall.

Actually, Weber is also a great example of how to write strong female characters. Strangely enough, he never gets considered "woke".

Some might think Rudi’s combination of practicing Islam and unabashed queerness contradictory, but few challenge the “Bear Gangrel” with this notion.

It's high time I thanked the woke morons who helped me break my addiction to TV and videogames by making the most asinine, insulting products they possibly could.

This is the same dynamic that's broken me of my interest in all mainstream entertainment. If there's something in particular that catches my eye, and it convinces me that it's not woke trash, I'll check it out. Otherwise, I don't pay attention.

I imagine this is something what it felt like in the USSR. You hear a new art gallery is opening up, but you already know it'll be full of the same old stylized pictures of happy peasants and steel workers, and the same old portraits of Comrade Lenin you've seen a thousand times already in slightly different settings. So why even go? Why even bother reading a single article in Pravda about the new gallery?

The same is true about pretty much every casual conversation you participate in or overhear with the sorts of people who care about this stuff. The thing that struck me was always how dull the debates wokeness provokes are— "Yung Wokey's new song 'Kill All Bitches' features some rather problematic depictions of violence against women, we must remember that black men can still benefit from male privilege..." "ah, but you're forgetting that his performative masculinity is just a front necessitated by the eternal shame and emasculation caused by slavery and white supremacy..." "ahhhhh, of course, how insensitive of me..." Who actually enjoys these dead, stale conversations? Who actually enjoys having to nod soberly at this shit as though it's insightful?

I have been smugly informed on many occasions by such people that "the personal is the political". Well, the political— increasingly, in a world of eroding physical communities— involves division, conflict, manipulation, exploitation, and endless mutual backbiting and hostility. If those are regular features of your personal experiences then chances are you aren't going to end up very happy.

It's all just so... tiresome.

Being aliens with equally strange biology, human notions of gender don't apply to them, so of course the tumblr crowd that took over the show after the original author stepped back declared them trans. Then there's the MC of the story, John Egbert, whose depression is stated to originate in that he's a transsexual in the closet and not, you know, having to deal with the death of his father and other unpleasant things.

Homestuck is best "enjoyed" if you read up to Cascade and then make up your own ending because the canon is abhorrend.

It's a long story, so I try to cut it short:

- 4 kids play a game that creates universes, but kills the planet they live on while doing so
- they continually get harassed via PMs by aliens that are called trolls.

- said trolls also played the game, but lost which the kids were indirectly responsible for.

- the reason why both game-sessions ended in spectacular failure is a big bad called Caliborn who goes by the alias Lord English.

- more stuff happens, the third game-session ends with near everyone dead.

- but John Egbert picked up the ability to freely manipulate a timeline, which he is then instructed by Terezi to use to save... exactly one of the trolls, Vriska, ignoring literally everyone else.

- long story short, people still die, but the game-session is successfully completed and Lord English will be killed.

- it becomes increasingly more obvious to John that he didn't save his friends, but rather replaced them with people who just look like them.

- That, combined with the death of his father in the former game session, lead to his depression and self-isolation which none of his so-called friends tried to stop. They were perfectly fine with letting him rot away in his home.

- Until they needed him, and only him, to finally kill Lord English.

- He wins, but is dealt a mortal wound and dies in the company of Terezi, the same troll who made him save only one person.

- Adding insult to injury, it's strongly implied that the current writers will resurrect him as a girl and make him being happy about it because obviously people are only depressed because they can't tranny out.
