Now, I’m no expert on British folklore or what makes for “good” cinema in general. But in addition to all the needless race-swapping, the eye-popping action scenes and special effects seem a bit… redundant for a Disney movie, if you ask me?
Yes, I know the latter two were part and parcel for Pirates of the Caribbean and the like. However, that was an original franchise where pretty much all elements of the setting were — while not wholly original, such as in the case of Davy Jones and whatnot — still weren’t meant to be “callbacks” to older stuff and wasn’t an obvious Trojan Horse for political or social activism.
