I liked being in the PM for the same reasons other people have stated: it was a general hangout.

People could shoot the shit with each other, debate, civilly argue, et cetera. It was pretty much a digital equivalent of going to a bar and seeing buds/regulars there.

Hell, a lot of the time it felt like what SB should have been in tone, compared to now that has people on-edge constantly in-case they say something 'wrong'/wrong-think or get dog-piled for having a dissenting opinion. Or writing disclaimers in posts to prevent the inevitable shrieking of posters accusing someone of something because they're too fucking stupid to read context.

It was a refuge for people who were... well, normal. Had common-sense. It didn't matter if your beliefs were moderate, conservative, liberal, Democrat, Republican, religious, atheist, et cetera. It was a place where we hung out and chatted. Just normal people from different walks of life.

It was... chill.

The rest of SB? They've gone fucking insane on the whole. The lunatics are running the asylum, and that includes a lot of staff members.

Frankly, the next year is going to see the site implode because there's no way in Hell Trump isn't going to re-elected. I still post there, still interact with people, but my main interest is in the stories being posted there and any interesting news or articles that pop-up. But that's all.

Now look at SB. it is an Un Fun Echo Chamber of people who actually think the rest of society thinks like they do? How the hell could the previous Admins allow this rot to happen. It is a damn shame.

Politics is downstream of culture. If the userbase turns into a toxic mess more concerned with getting one over the other guy than having a good time, then there's not a lot that the administration can do to stop it. Not even sure that the mods could have slowed it down, short of nuking Whitehall and a lot of NSFD.

On the other hand, maybe the problem is that much of the administration saw SB as a debate forum, rather than a discussion forum, and moderated accordingly.

The only thing we can do is try to cultivate the same sort of atmosphere that the PMs had, especially the Culture Wars PM. And to accomplish that, I would like to ask the people who are having a blast in our politics and current affairs section to please come spend some time in the media section and the Community Pub.

My take on this is that the Left was seen as the Counter Culture, they were the “rebels” standing up to the “conservatives” whom in their minds were all a bunch of greedy hypocritical douchebags who were also “prudes” obsessed with censoring sex and violence in fiction

At first they love the stuff that was being censored

Then they “grew up” or “matured” out of some desire to be seen as intellectual superiors of a sort who are of the “future”

I just followed some Fanfics I wanted to read over, and registered because I feel that if you enjoy someone's story you owe them a base level of posting and likes for encouragement. I do think the smaller forum is more inviting though, easier to post when the thread hasn't spawned 16 replies while you're still typing. The "What's New" button on SB is completely useless to me with it's hundreds of posts and even alerts can get insane at times, but I can actually parse the few dozen or so here and find what I want to read.
