The JMSDF launched a submarine today, the Taigei, the first of a new class of submarine that will be replacing the older Soryu-class.
This is the first of three boats (and potentially four) on order for the class and among its many design features are the fact its equipped with lithium-ion batteries as a power source. They are hoping upwards of seven will be built. They are also equipped with the fancy AIP propulsion system and next generation sonar. At three thousand tons, it weights a hundred tons more then the previous class of submarine.

Huh, let's see the whale names the JMSDF comes up with. They can reuse 3 from the IJN submarine tenders(Taigei, which was converted to Ryuuhou, and the earlier Jingei and Chougei), so we'll have 4 new names.
That's the jMSDF scheduling: launch one sub per year, commission one sub per year, retire one sub per year.

Yep, she was retired from her role as a training and accommodation ship at Portsmouth. Still 47 years of service in one role or the other ain't bad

It has been dockside for twenty years, refurbishing her simply isn't worth it as you would have to cut the hull apart to replace everything.

And the reason why she's been dockside being used as a training ship is that one of her turbines basically blew itself apart back in 1991
Im amazed they technically kept her in service for that long without putting out to sea.

Which naturally she won
Warspite is probably best known for tanking the German navy accidentally at Jutland and managing to make it home with 150 holes shot through her including 20 or so main gun hits. Probably also for scoring the joint longest ranged hit in naval gunnery, brutalising half the German Destroyer force at Narvik, stealth killing a major chunk of the Italian heavy cruiser force, tanking a cruise missile which had killed a far better ship, firing the first shots on D-Day and then at the end cheating the breakers by ramming England.
Pretty solid career, not very good at steering but very good at surviving and beating up smaller vessels

Of course. We might not have put armored flight decks on our carriers like you Brits but what we did do is make ships that could carry more planes and take one hell of a beating, win and keep carrying on.Enty is also a legend, she even had her own rival arc with Zuikaku

She was a good ship with good sisters
Normally people compare to carriers like Lusty with her armoured decks but honestly a better comparison is Ark Royal. The Illustrious sisters were built to tank land based planes in the Med, but Ark was built to operate in the pacific in the same way Enty was. She had more in common with US ships, virtually no armour but a big hanger and a lot of planes
In the pacific one had to have the planes instead of the armor. You faced more plans then you did anything else, and how do you fight planes? WITH MORE PLANESShe was a good ship with good sisters
