I mean the pretending to be a retard bit.
That is a singularly ill informed impression Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus.
He was excluded from much of public life due to his infirmity, caused by childhood illness, he had a limp, a stammer, and was partially deaf. Which lead to his mother, and successive Emperors looking down on him. As a result he was virtually ostracized. He had the fault of being an honest man in a family where speaking the truth could have fatal consequences. Claudius preferred a quiet scholarly life. His intellectual aspirations got him into trouble for actually containing the facts.
Many of his problems were caused by the sheer stress of having relatives that would murder each other on a regular basis.
Despite the disdain of the Imperial Family, people he was not related to had a much more favourable impression of him. Historians and Philosophers respected his abilities. Livy,
the Imperial Historian of the era, was his mentor. The Senate petitioned to allow him to speak during debates, and voted to have his house rebuilt at public expense. The Equites selected him to lead their delegation at the funeral of Augustus.
