Taiwan Straights Tension

And what we couldn't or weren't willing to assimilate, we threw back into the waters. The big fish, at least; I'm referring to the Philippines. Isn't that a demonstration of superior empire management rather than holding on to what cannot be held until reality forces your hand and you are humiliated in your weakness on the world stage as you slink away? Better to magnanimously offer the gift of freedom, by the way we get to keep using your naval bases for as long as we want.
The US didn't really want the Philippines in 1898 but got stuck with them. The US wasn't going to fuck that bit of unwanted colonialism up and Congress pretty much said "you're free to go as soon as you've got a stable government we're ok with."

WWII delayed Philippine independence from the US to July 4, 1946. Yup, July 4th is Independence Day for Americans and Filipinos.

Considering half of my family is Filipino, I would restrain from going off on ya.

Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy meeting the President Tsai of Taiwan at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California.

The weird (Chinese-American?) people who fly around Communist Peoples Republic of China flags are out in force apparently to protest.

In total a delegation of about eighteen US Congresspeople are meeting the President of Taiwan as this is the last leg of her trip to North America, having previously visited Guatemala and Belize who also diplomatically recognize Taiwan still.

I work with two guys who definitely grew up on the somewhat wealthy and well off side.
Both are liberal centrists

People who grew up in wealth tend to be because they've never experienced hardship or worry.

On the flip side, a lot of people who come from "old money" (I mean the kind where they wear old jeans and drive old, beat up pickup trucks) are a lot more grounded/conservative, so I guess it's "new money" that are more liberal/Leftist?

"Old money" is not trying to impress others with The Shiny (TM). That's how they became "old money" and why they stay "old money".

Old money: "I need a new BMW."
New money: "I want to be seen in a new BMW."

Pentagon is making plans to establish a better system of transferring arms to Taiwan in a manner similarly to how the United States is supplying Ukraine. This is intended to help alleviate the $19 billion backlog in arms shipments that Taiwan has been expecting from the United States that is largely due to American production constraints. This will involve being able to use Presidential Drawdown Authority to transfer arms from US military stockpiles to Taiwan.

Also a bipartisan Congressional delegation is visiting Taiwan and to meet with Taiwan's Vice President.

The problem here is you were the one that started this conversation, not me, and you did so by attacking my point that Vietnam (and others!) are trending in a Pro-China direction. Clearly you disagree, yet you oddly still cannot define what that "composite of policies and behaviors" are from which to judge your contention vs mine. If it's unclear, then please explain by what metrics you think they aren't. If you can't define them, then you're admitting it's entirely subjective, so why did you even bother to start this conversation?
Since I posted that:

Just as a recap:
  • Vietnam has Pro-China leaders
  • Vietnam has increased economic ties with China
  • Vietnam, as part of ASEAN, has moved to De-Dollarize and is moving towards a use of Yuan and local currencies
  • Vietnam has publicly stated it wants to increase defense cooperation with China
At this point, I have to ask what conditions are left to claim VIetnam hasn't taken a Pro China turn.

China suspected of cutting undersea internet cables that connect Taiwan to outlying Taiwanese islands closer to the Chinese mainland.

China's preparing for something. One would hope the Pentagon has put the Pacific Fleet on stand by.

The European Unions High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell in an opinion piece called upon European Navies to patrol the Taiwan Straights in order to guarantee peace as well as pointing out in the opinion article how important Taiwan is to Europe economically, commercially and technologically.

In response that Russian lady Maria Zakharova called upon the Chinese Navy to patrol the English Channel.
