It cuts part of the quote. During a discussion "You could also argue the countries they attacked were a part of Russia", then goes on to correct himself to "Were part of the Soviet Union." He's arguing against the war basically.
Kinda, he meant it was a Russian sphere of influence and we were messing with its front yard, and shouldn't have invited into NATO.

Ukraine has been a unique country for 30 years. The term "The Ukraine" means "The Hinterlands... of Russia". How long it's been a unique culture is like asking how long The South has been a unique culture, pretty fuckin arguable. So while he wasn't saying that getting involved with the equivalent fight of the Belgians vs Luxemburg was a stupid decision, it's not an unfair comparison. Except Luxembourg has more to support its political and cultural legitimacy.
