That's what the Left wants US to be. Not what America is/is supposed to be.
That's absolutely what America is, and always has been. I want people who consciously choose to opt out of their countries in favor of America because of the freedom America offers.
The problem is that some opt in for the welfare state. That's why the welfare state needs to go.

What exactly is so objectionable about the welfare state? AFAIK, immigrants already need to live here for a certain period of time before they can actually access our welfare state. There is, of course, the problem of birthright citizenship (the US-born children of immigrants accessing welfare), but that's a separate issue.
It's theft, just to start. It also encourages failure and disincentives success. But more, it's fundamentally unamerican. Asking for a handout is the most European/commie thing there is.
In regards the welfare state in regards to immigration, it's still a problem. There are plenty of ways for immigrants to get access to welfare, usually through state programs or a variety of exceptions. The allure of welfare is itself harmful as well.
If someone comes to America cause you want to work or especially for more freedom, I'd be fine with them coming in (and I want the freedom people in). If they come actively looking for a handout, they aren't American.
What about having an anti-dysgenic welfare state? So, giving welfare to people, but only on the condition that they agree to curb their fertility? American Renaissance man Jared Taylor has actually previously proposed something like this:

No, not a win win. First, eugenics is fundamentally flawed (read Sowell's Discrimination and Disparities for more). Second, we need more people, not less. Third, not a win-win: all tax payers were stolen from.

There’s also the fact people coming here by virtue of what America is and stands for are way more willing (and thus, way more likely) to assimilate, as well as offer bits and pieces of their culture that are compatible with the preexisting cultural framework and don’t infringe on America’s founding values.
Tacos, pizza, and Chinese takeout as part of the American diet are no problem, but insisting we make accommodations for Sharia Law or whatever… is a very big problem. People who insist it’s not and demand that the rest of us play along will regret that later, I fear.

Yes, and this is why people might be more wary about economic migrants. As in, people who don't necessary see anything wrong with their home countries other than their poverty and who simply want to move to the West for the increased economic opportunities that the West provides.

In principle, I wish those on the Right were more sympathetic to migrants fleeing poverty, though at the same time, resistance to assimilation and criminal elements that “mix in” with decent people who genuinely want to be patriotic, hard-working Americans is something the Left ignores all too often. Honestly, I think we’d all benefit from shifting the conversation more towards first causes, such as by asking why Central and South American nations are poor and inhospitable in the first place and looking to fix that, rather than just symptoms that materialize at our Southern border all the time.

If you really want to ask that about Latin America, their lower average IQs and higher average criminalities would be a good place to start. I don't know just how much of the latter is innate considering that US Hispanics aren't too crime-prone (they're much less crime-prone on average than US blacks are, for instance), but their lower average IQs might to some extent be innate since Hispanics here in the US also underperform academically:

I don't know if canada was retarded as us, during the 70s social workers basically went around telling black mothers to kick out the fathers of their children for more welfare money. This is what resulted in the inner cities becoming as bad as they are.
The 1970s also resulted in a reform of our child support laws that resulted in illegitimate children being entitled to child support.
And that was a horrific mistake, because it enabled bad behavior that seriously fucked our country.
The rate of single parenthood and the resulting problems it caused would be severally cut if we stopped subidizing it. Like it or not if you do not single mothers are a burden on society. There is a reason why pretty much every successful civilization works to limit that shit.
Because it does really bad things to society as a whole. Easiest way to deal with it? Don't fucking subidize it.
