David's first marriage to co-founder Barbara Mikkelson ended in divorce in 2016 in part due to the fact that he allegedly misused almost $100,000 in company funds on prostitutes. Barbara later sold her shares in Snopes to a media company called Proper Media which since 2017 has filed numerous lawsuits against David Mikkelson for various reasons with legal fees reportedly raising to millions of dollars. Thankfully for David he bounced back, marrying Elyssa Young who has a background in 'sex work' before they too split in 2020.
