Impeachment

Well, you know how it goes, if you plan on trying to stab someone in the back, you'd better not fuck up. Otherwise you might actually face some consequences for it like being fired from said job.
They're fucked and I doubt the Democrats have a parachute for them.

"He followed orders, he obeyed his oath, and he served his country... And for that, the most powerful man in the world - buoyed by the silent, the pliable, and the complicit - has decided to exact revenge," said his attorney, David Pressman.
Of course his attorney had to make some sort of effort, no matter how transparent and pathetic, at painting his client as a victim. Seriously, the political class has gotten to the point where I don't think they realize their lies are lies anymore; they just edit reality in their heads on the fly into whatever best suits their needs, like someone out of 1984. He probably honestly believes that his client is a victim in all this, and that's just depressing.

I would put money on Nikki Haley, the former ambassador to the UN, former governor of SC, taking the Republican nomination in 2024. She has a strong resume, and she served under Trump, but not so long that she is tied to the hip with him. She is a bit weak tea, not 100% supporting Trump, but not going hard against him either. As for winning, depends on how well the Democrats reform after they are crushed this year. I am not holding my breath.

Longer term, I will say Ivanka will probably run in the future. She is also setting herself up for a Presidential run, but probably not 2024. I will say though, that if both women ran for the nomination at the same time, things would definitely get spicy.
While I too would like Haley to run in 2024, she's said she's done with public office.

He should be happy that his attempted coup occurred within the US, as opposed to Saudi Arabia. Because it's not too cold in DC right now for a barbecue pit. People need to remember that as far as purging goes here in the US, it's actually pretty civil compared to other nations of the world.

People in the past can get fired with an execution or suicide?

What's an emolument?

The "emoluments clause" WRT the Executive Branch essentially says that the sitting President is not allowed to accept gifts from foreign governments. Back in the early Constitutional period, when small-r republican virtue was all the rage and statesmen were not expected to make money in office, there was a lot of concern about foreign dignitaries bribing the President with lavish gifts to influence diplomatic relations. It hasn't really had too many court/Constitutional challenges since it was written.

Well, as if to build on that....

As I said, this is clearly not a good week for the Democrats.
Damn, I was hoping they would lose on the merits so we can put that ridiculous interpretation of "emoluments" in the grave.

Being honest though, do you really think that as a matter of law they should have standing?

Personally, I take issue with the idea of the House or Senate (as individual bodies) having standing in most lawsuits; but that tends to be a lost cause. Congress is one branch made up of two component parts, and very few powers belong to one of them individually. So while I think that Congress should have standing (absent a handful of exceptions), I don't really think that the House or Senate individually should on most things.

Individual members of the House or Senate? Why in the world should they suddenly gain standing to assert a (relevant) injury simply because they belong to the House/Senate?

Meh, my idol is Snake Plissken more than anyone else, so make of that what you will.

"I don't give a fuck about your war, or your President."
Y'ever think that Snake was prepared to give the real tape to the president considering the prez saved his life when he really didn't have to, but his callousness afterwards soured him on it? Thats how I always interpreted his going over to talk to him, then leaving disgusted.
