This is kinda interesting because of how ludicrously broad the ruling is. They're forbidding all Valentine's cards because some kids may not be able to afford cards. But there's nothing you can't ban under that reasoning. Ban sports because some kids are in wheelchairs; ban drawing because some kids can't afford art supplies; ban reading, writing, and math because some students can't afford books.

For something like this, I'm fine with paying the family back; the dude may have been a slave owner, but the school took the money and named the building.

If they are going to undo that naming, the descendants should get their families money back.

America is due for a major religious revivial in around 20 years or so.

add to that that religious people tend to have 3 kids to liberal aithests average of one....well add in 20 years and the children of the parents who were discriminated against like this will now feel very justified in looking for payback.

A lot of the words and turns of phrase are just... not used anymore, in any media. It is not a surprise that people would fail to understand things they've never come across before.
I was able to read and understand that sort of prose back in middle school. I got tired of needing to give definitions to people and made an active effort to dumb town my speech. great news it worked. bad news I speak like a lay person and have a bunch of fancy words in the back of my mind that I half remember the definitions of that I am sure describe something much better than my usual word choices.

I can understand it, it just takes mental effort to remember what each part actually means, as some words changed meanings over time.

There is language drift. And changes in ortography. So, after even 50 years books or newspaper articles can be difficult to understand, let alone over a hundred. Especially by "not the brightest: amongst the "not so well educated". Average 18 year olds in an average school are indubitably such a group.

I'd love the family to get back the donation plus interest. As noted - either the name stays, or give back the money.

Lingual Drift is a thing but I think people here are giving it too much credence. Sentence structure has not changed so much since then that the basic structure of verb and noun are different, students should still be able to realize what those are.

Purely anecdotally I haven't met anybody younger than myself who learned how to diagram sentences in school.

I'm in my late thirties, and I have no idea what "diagraming a sentence" is. Then again, I didn't learn geometry until I was in college, so that's probably not indicative of anything beyond how garbage the public schools in my area were.

It's a way of essentially drawing a sentence, allowing you to establish the structure and where each word fits regardless of how it's actually worded. Assuming they each communicate the same idea, the diagram for several different sentence structures will look essentially the same.

As sentence structure grows more complex, the diagram for it also grows and some sentences can get pretty wild.

Diagramming is "outdated" today because it encourages critical thinking and forces the student to develop an understanding of how to write with clarity and communicate ideas readily to others, things that the modern education system isn't fond of.
