Don't think I've seen this posted here before:

According to the dude running the show on the ground, that particular case of rotor washing was because people put stuff all over what was supposed to be a clear landing area.

You can argue the pilot shouldn't have gotten so low before waving off, but the guy running show on the ground was thanking the pilot, not bitching at him, and clearly the chopper had a reason to be there.

Somebody fucked up demarcating the intended landing zone, and keeping people off of it.

However, the pilot really should have not gotten so low before waving off, even if the landing zone was supposed to be clear. No crew chief with his head out the window is not smart.

Feels like the ground side failed to secure the drop point properly, and the rest went from there.

And of course Captain X only likes this post and not... the post with the actual information.

Almost like he has an agenda or something.

And if yall read the twitter thread, yall would know that everything the copters are flying in, are donations from people.
And that they have Chinooks coming in, and to make sure nothing is near the LZ unless they want to lose military heavy lift air.
But it seems those shouting high and low want thay because "fuck tje guberment!" When it isn't FEMA and mistakes happen.

<National Guard’s report of ‘armed militia,’ prompts the relocation of North Carolina hurricane recovery officials> <FEMA contractors ordered to “stand down” after security threats, messages show>
>>> Federal emergency response personnel on Saturday had employees operating in hard-hit Rutherford County, N.C., stop working and move to a different area because of concerns over "armed militia" threatening government workers in the region.

Around 1 p.m. Saturday, an official with the U.S. Forest Service, which is supporting recovery efforts after Hurricane Helene along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, sent an urgent message to numerous federal agencies warning that "FEMA has advised all federal responders Rutherford County, NC, to stand down and evacuate the county immediately. The message stated that National Guard troops 'had come across x2 trucks of armed militia saying there were out hunting FEMA.'"

"The IMTs [incident management teams] have been notified and are coordinating the evacuation of all assigned personnel in that county," the email added.

By Sunday afternoon, personnel were back in place, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

An inspection agency that works as a contractor for the Federal Emergency Management Agency has ordered its employees in western North Carolina to cease inspections over the weekend and return to hotels, WBTV has confirmed.

Sunday evening, the Washington Post first reported messages about reports of threats to FEMA-affiliated workers in Rutherford County. WBTV has independently confirmed that reporting with sources with direct knowledge of the threats.

"Effective immediately, disaster wide -- cease inspections today and return to your hotels," an alert from Vanguard Inspection Services read on Saturday. "FEMA received news that the Title 10 (active military unit deployed to NC) came across some trucks of militia units who said they were out hunting FEMA personnel."

Or perhaps the fuck up on the ground crews part is still a gov fuck up, had you both considered that.

Nah, that might mean actually admitting that the gov agencies/officers in this case fucked up in two separate, but related, ways by not clearing the drop zone and keeping it clear for in the incoming birds, and the Blackhawk crew for going too low before waving off.

There was no gov agency on the ground. It's a pure civilian effort.

So the gov birds expected a clear LZ, with no one on the ground ensuring the drop zone was actually clear, just trusting the civies to know not to put anything in a landing zone that was not marked out or secured by any sort of means...

That's not painting a better picture.

Yes, because they'd landed there before.

.....the guy in charge of the entire organization doing the donations who has civilian crews flying constantly totally had government screw it ip on purpose...

...this is not being mentioned anywhere else, by anyone else, so please provide a link showing this is the case.
The guy leading the whole effort mentions it, they they have gotten it plenty of times and need it for stuff.

He mentions it, WHERE?

Because I have not seen a link or report about who on the ground side was in charge of what, or what sort of prior comms were had, or that it was a previously used LZ.

You and Vyor are the only one's saying this, and not via links.

Literally in the video we're talking about.

Initially it's probably due to many West Narth Carolinians going around armed as a matter of course while FEMA types with more urbane backgrounds aren't used to seeing people open carry.

Now that there's an active hate FEMA campaign going on for reasons better or worse the atmosphere isn't going to improve whether these "Militias" are figments of exaggeration or not.

Literally in the video we're talking about.
I watched the video, and the guy is talking about people putting stuff or parking stuff in areas that he planned to use as drop zones for helos, after the incident.

So this video is someone trying to prevent it happening again.

It doesn't show what instructions or directions were given to people beforehand, and that is where the ground side failure occurred.

If this guy was in charge at the time, he failed to make clear that certain areas needed to remain clear, and it still doesn't absolve the crew for waving off only after damage started being done, instead of knowing prop wash physics+untrained/unstaked civie gear=shit goes flying.

Prop wash dangers on unsecured shit isn't exactly rocket science to figure out, and no crew chief with their head out the side is still a dumb move.

So multiple sets of failures here, some on people on the ground who organized by didn't demarcate landing zones well enough, and on the crew for being lax in their thinking about landing procedures till damage began to be inflicted.

It might also be because the Forest Service wants to close the local forests till sometime in 2025, and arrest people caught in the woods.

Trying to close the forests this time of year, while recovery is still ongoing, might have angered some locals enough to form a militia.

We joke about the UN hearing banjo's in Appalachia, and well, FEMA types are likely just below blue helmets in seeming like a hostile invading force to some of those areas.

Are you basing the Armed Militias threatening FEMA due to the Forest Service wanting to "close the local forests" and arresting people on something beyond the fact it's allegedly happening or is this just theory crafting motivations?

I'm not convinced that armed Militias genuinely "hunting" or threatening FEMA exists, much less ascribing specific actions to the motivation of their creation beyond broad negative perceptions of the federal government and it's response.

While the federal response has been poor, like in most disaster areas the state is in charge, local authorities are the ones who effect government action the most and federals are only there to advise and support.

I think cultural differences in open carry seem far more likely for the initial cause of tension and the general antipathy and hate directed towards FEMA and the federal government as well documented on social media and local communixations as being a better explanation of this "armed Militias" allegation then one specific thing reportedly enacted by a wholly different agency (the Forest Service).
