[X] Offer DoME support to the NRI and NRR
Lets give them more things to do, so they don't get up to shenanigans like bored military grunts.

Them using the talk of limits to their advantage is unsurprising, but the point of the limits was limits to the treaty, not their expansion. I never said anything about them not being allowed to settle outside of it, as the treaty was limits to our expansion. They didn't want us expanding in that direction, fine, they got that, but you don't hand a carte blanche for territory, for many reasons.

The treaty was limiting our expansion in a direction that we're not even expanding to begin with and have no reason to expand in, on the other side of friendly allies. It's literally their natural zone of interest and the only reason we would do so is this persistent idea of enveloping and conquering them.

The only people I want to conquer are the Bourbons and that's only because they annoy me. Everyone else gets trade agreements and the like

I mean the distance explicitly gives us a renegotiate time frame. If what they're doing for us per the treaty is no longer good or viable having something that forces renegotiation was why I was thinking the limit was smart.

That said, a DoME team each really isn't that big a deal? More viable planets means a stronger economy, means our long time allies, who are a fraction of our size anyways, will be able to contribute more to any action in which they participate.

They must already be trickling in all sorts of tech, despite the paranoid way we act about it. They must be closing in on their own DoME teams, if they could afford them.

It's giving up half our DOME capacity for an indefinite number of terms. A fairly steep price to pay for a completely self-inflicted diplomatic fiasco.

Didn't we put in a limit to their expansion to force renegotiations which would also include the use of our DoME teams?

That's certainly not indefinite.

Half of our DOME capacity?!
I thought we have like 8-10 DOME teams at work currently?
Last listing we had was setting projects for four teams, although that might have been just the number of teams finishing their previous project that year. It's still a significant commitment.
Didn't we put in a limit to their expansion to force renegotiations which would also include the use of our DoME teams?

No. Offering DoME teams isn't explicitly tied to the expansion treaty terms; it's something that our government is voting on doing as a seperate deal to mend relations after y'all insisted on writing in pointless and deeply insulting restrictions on top of what the QM had provided.

Turn 138 - Heaven Help My Heart

There is a serious tragedy in the Olympics at the Stock Car racing finals.

On lap 228 out of 250 on the 2 mile superspeedway tri-oval circuit the 28 car of Jean-Claude Cochet had a tire go down and got turned into the wall. His car, running in 2nd at the time, went briefly airborne but the safety equipment started to bring it down. Unfortunately, the 14 car of Ken Forseth suffered a brake rotor failure when attempting to slow down and came underneath the 28, causing it to flip up and to the side. The car went over the SAFER barriers which should have absorbed the hit and instead slammed into the catch fence at 182 mph. The fence held, which prevented an even greater tragedy, but the caution light assembly mounted trackside, nominally more than high enough to clear any normal accidents, intersected with the windshield of the 28, shattering the windshield and killing Cochet.

It’s the first fatality in any motorsport discipline in the Olympics, and what made it worse in some ways is that Cochet was running the best that any Bourbon driver ever had, on pace to earn the first silver medal in stock car racing for the Bourbons ever. Forseth drove for Team NRR and was a previous bronze medalist from four years ago.

The race ended under the red flag, as it had gone long enough to be official. The stewards inquiry showed no issues, all safety equipment had been installed but had been defeated by pure horrific luck. Scoring the race as it stood at the time of the red flag would result in a Griffon 1 and 2, with the NRI in third, however an impromptu driver’s meeting resulted in the driver’s refusing to accept such a scoring, insisting that the race be scored as of the moment of impact and that, deceased or not, the 28 should be scored as finishing in 2nd position and the silver medal awarded to the Bourbons.

When the stewards initially resisted such a creative interpretation of the rules, the teams made it very plain that unless it was scored that way that they would all boycott the medal ceremony and would refuse to accept any medals at all for the event. In the end the stewards blinked and accepted the team's interpretation.

Therefore, the official ending order would be Griffon - Bourbon - NRR. However, just before the medal ceremony, the crew chief of the winning Team Griffon car announced that they’d ‘discovered a loose lug nut’ and were ‘out of an abundance of respect for the rules’ voluntarily penalizing themselves, even though the official technical inspection was clean. This led to some confusion, but in the end the team held firm to their insistence on this, resulting in the first gold medal to somebody other than Team Griffon in stock car racing since the ancient, relatively speaking, debacle in the third Olympiad in NRI space due to NRI shenanigans.

Everybody and their brother knows that this was purely a gesture of respect for the lost driver and his family, but the gesture goes over amazingly well. There’s not a dry eye in the house during the medal ceremony, which is preceded by a minute of silence in respect.

Of course, Team Griffon won every single other motorsports event, generally by enormous margins, including the ‘drifting’ and ‘rallying’ events added by the Fringe worlds.

You then have to head over to the office for the budget meeting, which is mostly being held remotely this year since you are attending the Olympics on Okusawa.

Amaunet is linked in via HPG link, and is looking like a smug cat, which she is, both smug, and a cat. “Padrone, the military is in good shape and continuing to run smoothly. I’ll leave it to the service chiefs to give the details.”

General Zara then takes over the link. “Your Majesty, review of combat performance for 1st Corps is complete, with no major deficiencies noted that cannot be rectified simply through additional training and experience. Therefore Your Army intends to continue our expansion plans and remains ready to deal with any challenges placed before us.”

General Perkins is up next. “Your Majesty, we continue to build up our ASF assets to meet our needs. Thankfully losses have been relatively light over the last several years, which is allowing us to rotate more survivors back for training rotations and thus allowing us to show a marked and continuing increase in pilot quality. Thankfully the recent Black Steel raid on Pryyemnyy did no damage to the ASF factories on the planet thanks to the efforts of the defending forces.”

Your Foreign Minister has sent you a recommendation to sponsor an Empire-wide charity concert event, building on the great success of the opening ceremony for this years Olympics.

Finally, you are very glad that you are operating remotely, because you are able to tune out the boring drone of Steven Byrne as he talks in one incredibly unbroken monotone sentence that threatens everybodies sanity. He is recommending a number of very large budget items, but you can see the point of it as well. The budget numbers look like they might be marginal, but possibly doable with a little luck.

Clearly, this tragic accident demonstrates just how inherently risky it is to throw around the sheer amounts of kinetic energy involved in modern racing speeds, despite the best efforts of modern safety equipment, and illustrates that racing events should be curtailed . . .

The nebula colonisation options sound very interesting. If we hit off a good match here I propose setting up some R&D that needs to be top-secret there.

In fact maybe turn the colony searches in the nebula to be a matter of state without disclosure to the public?
