So not agreeing to give up everything in perpetuity past a certain imaginary line in space consisting of potentially thousands of systems, is hostile?

We're not "giving up" anything unless you start with the proposition that we rightfully own every uninhabited system in the entire region, which absolutely is a hostile, expansionist mindset. We have functionally unlimited expansion space in the other direction; the only reason to is to preserve the "option" of surrounding the NRI and NRR in order to cut off their expansion.

Does this mean we get EVERYTHING ELSE? If so, I'm OK with that.

Your take is the height of paranoia in regards to what we're talking about. If we run this interpretation, then my first sentence should apply to the rest of the undiscovered universe. It's silly, and I don't want to go there as a player or 'ruler'. My plan merely leaves us open to renegotiation at a later date. It precludes nothing except that which is specifically outlined in this treaty.

My take is literally what the player who came up with the limit idea explicitly stated as motive. He explicitly wanted to limit their expansion to preserve the ability to encircle and cut them off from further expansion.

Fair.

I just don't subscribe to that reasoning for the same action.

Turn 138 - One Night in Bangkok

There is a great deal of internal debate among your staff and advisors over the diplomatic overtures from three of your allies but in the end it is generally agreed that their proposals are quite reasonable, thus you formally accept them. The chatter from your staff about ‘limits’ to the NRI and NRR expansion zones, however, causes a bit of a backlash, with the NRI ambassador openly speculating about imposing similar ‘limits’ to your expansion, since allowing you to expand wherever you want would result in them being swallowed up.

You are well aware that plenty of your subordinates desire to do just that, but realistically that would just be a formula for endless internal civil strife since neither the NRR nor the NRI has ever shown any inclination to join your empire, and both have quite a bit of nationalistic pride in themselves. All you would get is trouble, and it would cost you far more than you could ever hope to gain.

But now there is a media kerfuffle, with pundits and critics from all sides expressing opinions on the issue and generally being exceptionally unhelpful in maintaining friendly relations. Having more bellicose commentators loudly proclaiming that the ‘eventual goal should be to subordinate them’ is causing diplomatic migraines since blowhards from the NRI and NRR press are being just as combative in pushing back at such, with a growing segment of your allies media now openly calling for an end to the alliance.

It’s a bit irritating, what should have been a rather routine agreement has become a stress point in the Alliance. You call in Agostina, your Foreign Minister, for consultations, and she recommends publicly mending fences, perhaps by offering the services of some of your DoME teams to the NRI and NRR to assist their colonization and terraforming efforts.

[]ActionResult
[]Offer DoME support to the NRI and NRR
  • Dedicates 2 DoME teams to supporting your allies colonization efforts
  • Prevents certain events
[]Ignore the issue, it’ll go away
  • Unlocks certain events

You also get more bad news, as a Black Steel raid has hit the Pryyemnyy system in force. Fighting was brutal, with the local system defenses desperately attempting to hold back the Black Steel while waiting for relief from the Grand Fleet. Home Fleet took heavy losses in the process. Several squadrons of NRI corvettes and destroyers also participated in the initial fighting and likewise took enormous casualties, mostly while defending the high orbitals of the planet itself in order to prevent the Black Steel from unleashing any orbital bombardment on the population of the planet below.

The arrival of the Grand Fleet turned the tide of the battle and the Black Steel took massive losses once they got pinned between the remaining defenses and the heavy steel of the battle line. The Kaiserin-class proved absolutely lethal in their largest deployment to date, shattering Black Steel battle line units. In the end you dealt massively more damage to the Black Steel than you took, at least in terms of ship losses.

While there was substantial infrastructure damage in the system, civilian casualties were relatively low. Unfortunately the fighting completely destroyed the shipyards in the system as well as the repair facilities that had been built up there. Long and short term economic damage is also severe.

It’s a painful hit, but nothing that you can’t handle. The ongoing raiding operations, combined with the very light losses to Grand Fleet, mean that your relative combat power continues to grow, according to your analysts, and they consider this to be a sort of Pyrrhic defeat for the Black Steel since they not only lost the battle, but also lost considerably more forces than your analysts feel that they could absorb.

Speaking of the raiding operations, they continue as planned, with regular skirmishes with light Black Steel forces causing constant attrition to both sides. The Expeditionary and Strike Fleets are getting quite adept at the sort of hit-and-run operations that this strategy requires and loss rates are going down which is quite welcome news.

One of the more significant raids of the last few months was against a Black Steel ordnance storage facility, which resulted in some very spectacular explosions that are quite… pretty.

At least it means that you have some good news!

The Olympics are continuing, with competition heating up across the board. Team Griffon is proving quite formidable here at home, even in the new disciplines, and you are quite pleased as the number of gold medals grows. Gymnastics continues to be a fiercely fought battle between the NRI and Team Griffon, with the NRI edging you out this year for the top of the podium in both the men’s and team categories, but your women manage to snatch gold by a mere hundredth of a point. Despite the tensions in the alliance it is plain to see that the competitors are still friends despite it all, with both teams celebrating together, win or lose. Right up until the final score is awarded they are fierce competitors, but the instant those numbers are announced they become best friends, as happy for each other's successes as for their own. It’s rather inspirational really.

There’s a bit of drama in the aquatics center as a Bourbon diver suffered a medical emergency during the competition, having to be raced to the trauma center after falling from the high platform. Thankfully your medical professionals were able to prevent the worst case scenario, but it still casts a pall over the competition.

On the track one of the little Fringe statelets is proving to be a rather unexpectedly capable competitor. For the first time in the Olympics Team Griffon is denied an Athletics medal, being edged out for the bronze by that small team of very capable athletes. It’s most certainly a David vs Goliath type of moment and you can’t help but be impressed by it all.

The mass-start mountain biking event, which begins on a high alpine glacier and ends in the valley far below, features both truly impressive racing as well as a number of terrifying crashes. Again you are very fortunate that no competitor actually died, but the medical personnel are definitely earning their salaries this year.

Parliament is being very quiet this year, mostly because it’s an election year and they are busier campaigning rather than coming up with major new legislation. Thus only routine business is on that docket this year, which is certainly helpful in terms of keeping you from having to burn too much midnight oil. Tiberius indicates that it is likely that your supporters will retain their majorities in the election, which is a relief.

Them using the talk of limits to their advantage is unsurprising, but the point of the limits was limits to the treaty, not their expansion. I never said anything about them not being allowed to settle outside of it, as the treaty was limits to our expansion. They didn't want us expanding in that direction, fine, they got that, but you don't hand a carte blanche for territory, for many reasons.
