Sci-Fi Tech Combat Armor Aesthetics and Utility In Fallout and Science Fiction

Fanservice shouldn't be what you focus on.
40k isn't a anime
I like 40k, I like fanservice.

I see no reason why I should not enjoy some 40k fanservice, especially considering the potential of stuff like Dark Elves, Sisters of Battle and so on and so forth.

Imperium has some fan service but mostly chaos and dark Eldar do that

Not enough on any side IMHO.

Anyways, back on topic, here is what must be the most powerful power armor we have visuals of:

Posting only this and not their other power armor because I am too lazy to search for more stuff.

Eh those guys aren't really even human anymore the armor is more to just hide the horrors of what the Combine does rather than protection.

No it's protective combat armor. It's stated as much with the game related lore I'm pretty sure as ephemeral as that might be. And Half Life: Alyx gameplay made it pretty clear that Combine Overwatch forces are wearing armor plating.

I always liked how a lot of combine forces used soft-padded armor instead of the more sci-fi traditional hardsuits/plates.
The fibres might come from another planet, and soft armor has benefits like flexibility and good coverage.

Granted it's typically weaker than ceramic plates and such, but given the combine likely didn't expect a full on rebellion led by a eldritch horror's puppet, it was likely sufficient to oppress a few handgun wielding dissidents.

It does provide protection but the Combine could no doubt do a lot better if they cared. But turning humans into hunters seems to be their main goal.

Agreed.

I also really do dig the design of all of the Combine forces. But I'm sure I'm a little biased because Half Life is one of my favorite video game franchises period. The masks just complete the look. And I enjoy the similarities of design across not just the Overwatch troopers but also the rest of the Combine forces like the Synths and Advisors and the like. They all got a nice similar feel that the Transhuman forces and Civil Protection really blend into nicely aesthetically.

Per the topic Wikis state the Combine Overwatch armor has hardplates but I have no idea what the sourcing for that claim is. It looks like it could be but I always assumed that yes, it was some sort of potentially advanced soft/fiber body armor.

Though many of the Combine from Half Life: Alyx definitely seem to clearly hardplate armor.

There is a rumor that Combine Overwatch Body Armor is actually inspired by Russian 6b23-1 Body Armor which would be in line with Half Life 2's general Eastern European setting.

I've always liked the stuff in Deus Ex aesthetically, it's the right amount of grounded and scifi imo

You need to touch grass and get your head on straight.

Having cool helmets is almost cheating. It does add a lot of coolness factor when it comes to things like the Combine or Helghast troopers or NCR Veteran Rangers, Krieg Troopers etc.

I will say that while I reiterate I wish that Fallout kept the early combat armor from the Fallout 1 & 2 games, and while i find their basic combat armor to be kinda generic looking, I really do like the NCR Ranger Patrol Armor. Especially when paired with their Ranger Hats. It's a bit futuristic and obviously armor but conservative enough that it fits the role. And you can see their face.

From what I remember I think the ranger patrol armor was suppose to be combat armor. It would have been carried over but time crunch forced obsidian to reuse assets.

So I just found this new website about the GI Joe franchise and we've been spending a lot of time hooking up nostalgia. One of the things that stays with us, are those iconic action figures and as uniforms... especially semi-futuristic combat armor goes... COBRAAAAAAA! had the far better outfits!

I remember the Alley Viper looking way cooler but the Version 2 Alley Viper is far superior to Version One or Three.

They actually looked really cool in the night time as well since it shrouded out the orangeness and you had a bunch of badass Urban troopers descending upon you with automatic weapons like damn ninjas and jagged tigerstripe camo. :p

I just loved the yellow and orange heat viper with the giant shield and a smaller visor thing. Yet a bit of the chin is exposed for some reason. That little accent made it work for me. Along with the fact its off center. It's all far from symmetrical. And the insulated suit is cool as is the giant silvery rocket launcher. Plus the optics linked from the helmet to the flamer itself. Futuristic tank hunter right out of classic scifi.

I liked the Night Creeper Ninjas and their epic five quarrel crossbows, the purple accented uniform, the camo pants for some reason, plus the frontal armor plating and the weird visor which might hide advanced optics.

Night Viper just looks cool. Wish we could blend his uniform with the markings of the Alley Viper. It'd be perfect.

The helmet looks kinda dweeby now but when you were a kid it looked far cooler (as do most of these bright uniforms) plus the SAW Viper is a badass. They're equipped with massive scoped heavy machine guns that can both pump hundreds of rounds downrange or snipe targets from a few hundred yards out at night.

Favorite Cobra Unit of course... is the Crimson Guard and the even more rare and badass Crimson Guard Elite who are the bodyguard and elite operatives of Cobra and protect Cobra Commander himself.

Along with being complete badasses in combat, they double as deep agents in their spare time... or most of the time I suppose.

Okay I'm done nerding out to nostalgia. Carry on! I just love that I found such an awesome website about GI Joe. The JoePedia and YoJoe.com don't have that sort of encyclopedic knowledge this website, 3DJoes.com has.

The Combine actually just "recycled" or "retro-reinvented" a lot of Earth's existing tech, and few components are actually alien (examples of alien tech are the Pulse Rifle, for example), aside from the Synths.

Even the Overwatch Elite's armour and helmets are made from Earth technology, albeit with futuristic principles used to manufacture them. The Metro Police? Ordinary uniforms and submachine guns, probably from pre-War stock.

If you look at the Combine Choppers and APCs, for example, they're basically just regular APCs and helicopters in a different aesthetic. I mean, they're futuristic as in "a guy from the 50's sees jet technology from the 2050's and is forced to create stuff in the 50's based on 2050's principles and technology using 50's technology/manufacturing techniques", but they're pretty much still conventional stuff (wheels, engine, plate armour, et cetera).

They likely did this as a way to keep costs down, use a subjugated species' own stuff against them as a psychological factor, and for logistics purposes.

I always liked the aesthetics of the power armor from Sassinak's cover:

Maybe I should get around to reading the book at some point.

And while we are on the subject of book covers:

Baen had some fairly interesting other ones, too.

All this talk about armor has reminded me that Traveller still exists and has some of the most impressive personal armor system that doesn't require you to be special (outside of the required training): the Battledress.

It laughs off our autocannon with its armor.
