To no one's surprise (and even SB isn't surprised to this), the GOP is trying to do whatever it can to stay in power.
That isn't really the case. This has been the GOP's end product ever since the GOP heads decided that bipartisanship outside of 'whatever we say goes' is anathema back in the fallout of Watergate and thus ejected anyone that is 'moderate' as 'RHINOs'. They set a lot of the groundwork during the Reagan administration with the repeal of essentially one of the few things that kept the likes of FOX News from happening.
Bush Jr. gave the GOP an out during his elections by reaching out to the Hispanics but they pretty much spat in his hand at the minimum, outright stabbed his metaphorical hand at most. The GOP proper doesn't want to 'expand the base', they wanted power above all else.
Right now, in the 'Nixon speedrun' chart, we're past the 'Nixon has resigned' phase.
Here's the thing, I used to be a centrist Republican, the problem is the GOP simply left me behind and for dead essentially. Right now the Democrats are the 'Coalition of Not GOP', not a left-wing coalition.
TBH, I’ll acknowledge the Democrats accusation as true.
The republicans do want to remain in power, my response is “yeah and that’s what we intend to do”.
The Republican electorate is well aware the winds of demography and the Overton window of political discourse are against it.
Why do you think we back Trump so fervently?
He is the last shield against political oblivion.
*I am being entirely sincere in what I am about to say, controversial as it is.
I firmly believe anything must be done to hold power(for myself and the party) and by that anything. Ideally without violence or large scale political suppression.
The problem is republicans simply cannot win due to the power of new immigrants and big cities. And the decline of the rural and religious right.
My attitude is simple, “if we can’t win via the ballot box, we’ll have to hold via a wall of bayonets”
Most of the republican electorate and party members do not yet put it in such blunt terms, but I am always an exception to these sorts of things.
If we must dispose of democratic governance entirely-it would be a terrible tragedy, but the Democrats have left us no alternative.
