Smallpox samples are handled with Biosafety Level 4 containment procedures. Those basically amount to "yes" when it comes to safety precautions.

I guess my concern then is over the lack of time, unless they can get some kind of a stay in place. I'm almost certain my company will just go along with it to avoid getting fined.

I wouldn't trust one of their labs to comply with the American or Russian hazardous materials safety rules they claim to meet. That's assuming they can even meet the standards in the first place.

I question if this is case of a bug jumping species's, or if the test kits are so crappy they mis-ID a lot of things as Wu Flu.
Crap testing kits giving false positives is something we have seen off and on since this bug got loose.
the testing protocols are HORRIBLE.

Turns out flus and colds share some key bits with covid that the tests look for and the symptoms for covid are basically the same as a mild cold unless you get a unfortunately severe case.
I'd guess the reported cases and deaths are off by a order of magnitude and we all know the stories of people dying in all sorts of ways being reported as covid deaths because the unreliable tests on the bodies came back positive and the hospitals wanted the bonus money.
