"Woke" Franchises

So, looks like Netflix is Going Broke.

“Those who have followed Netflix know that I’ve been against the complexity of advertising and a big fan of the simplicity of subscription. But as much as I’m a fan of that, I’m a bigger fan of consumer choice,” he said. “And allowing consumers who like to have a lower price, and are advertising tolerant, to get what they want makes a lot of sense.”

Yeah, they're spinning it as increasing consumer choice, by allowing customers to choose to have their stuff larded with ads. But I don't think anybody's buying it, and between this and the layoffs they've been doing and losing subscribers, it's pretty clear they're really running out of cash.

I mean the reason behind Netflix doing this is not just them going Woke but also their love of canceling every good show after one season.

But having a lower price or a free tier with ads is just good business sense. I personally watch Crunchyroll for free with ads becasue I don't watch enough anime to pay 10 dollars a month. Also IMDB has has a free streaming thats has some decent hits from early 2000's. It is a trade off and having a certain level of ads is fine for a lot of people that are looking to keep their Cable/streaming budgets under control.

I don't know how much sense an ad-supported service you still pay for makes, business wise.

Like...I dabble with one or two of the subscription services that have ads...When they're free. I can't imagine paying a subscription fee--even if it was just a few bucks--to just have content-access without the ad-elimination that such plans previously earned you. Content just usually is not that good as far as I can tell--and once again it's become divvied up between a dozen different services. Why waste your time when there are competitors with ads that will have stuff--they won't have the new hotness content, but at this point who cares?

Chances are one of the streaming services that's free and does ads has stuff on it someone wants to watch. Peacock has Law & Order. PlutoTV has CSI and Walker, Texas Ranger. Roku has House M.D and Leave it to Beaver. Retrocrush has Bubblegum Crisis. And that's just seconds of net-searching and scanning their front pages for big names that people recognize and might be attracted to (except the last which I know just from use :p ). It baffles me how willing people are to pay subscriber fees for the little bits of new or exclusive content it gives you...Especially with how panned that content oftentimes is anymore.

And, worst-case, while password-sharing might be getting more difficult...Doing watch-parties with some things might work out anymore, especially as streaming shifts to scheduled content release instead of mass drops of everything, and that kind'a watch-party constrains the shelling out of money to faceless corporate entities to one household (This is the method yours truly harnessed to watch The Mandalorian...Though it may actually have ended up costing me more in beer and other party-favors, so, in hindsight...:p )

Or, sideways-case, someone just bites the VPN subscription bullet and sails the seas for whatever their heart's desire.
But that requires technical know-how so...Steep buy-in.

I just had (and still have) a Twitter discussion with a guy... who of course identifies as an inanimate object ("They/Them"). Topic? Space Marines. Discussion started on Mike Brooks thread about him "doubling the queer" in Black Library. At any rate, he/she/it thinks that Space Marines are asexual and should be transgender, or at the very least Space Marines should have women in the ranks... with a whole range of justifications, from "representation" to "making the setting more popular among the women".

They arent asexual. They are organic fighting machines built on a frame of meat and bone, requires the y chromosome and everything not related to that has been removed by the process that transforms them. Women dont need to be 'represented' in the space marines. This is just intersectional entitlement.

Hmm, come to think of it I believe Daemonettes and Slaanesh are trans and I'd think the genderfluid section is well covered by Orks who don't conform to binary gender either, so really they're all well covered, 40K is clearly pretty woke and inclusive, and they should support it wholeheartedly.

I always figured Space Marines had there libido reduced to near zero with all the heavy augmentations they had.
They're effectively asexual. They reproduce via geneseed. Their libido is suppressed using genetic engineering and heavy subliminal indoctrination. The hilarious part of this whole thing is that they're transhumans and these chuckle-fucks want to impose a human sexual dichotomy on them. It definitely reveals their lack of care or understanding about the issue.

To be fair, I think about 90% of the Warhammer fandom either doesn't realize or forgets that it's supposed to be a parody of Extreme European Nationalism. (As per the original authors admition. If your own fanbase doesn't understand the source material it's kinda hard to expect these twitterites to understand it.

Even if GeeDubs made Warhammer a yaoi shitshow where seemingly every man is some kind of raging british cigar, it would still not attract women.

They will destroy thier IP, even more than they already have if they make everything gay and bring in female space marines. 40k is already a diluted shadow of its former self, and the 'community' is an absolute shitshow as it is.

You dont need to appeal to everyone, dont need to bring in girls. That is just a manifestation of intersectional entitlement and intersectional occupation.

The idea that you need to have a ton of female characters, and female leads to bring in female fans is laughable. Just as an example, women have always been fans of Star Trek, from the very beginning. It was women who started fan-zines for it, and invented slash-fic for it that they shared in said 'zines. They did not need Michael Burnham or reinvented Number One to get them interested in it. For another example, someone trying to defend Disney Wars actually undermined their own argument by showing pictures of a young woman who had made her own X-wing flight suit costume just based on memory from watching the movie back when it first came out, claiming that Rey was for fans like her, but apparently ignoring the fact that she didn't need Rey or anyone like her to be not only a fan of the original movie, but a big enough one to make her own costume from memory to show her fandom. For the person who made this argument (on the SF Debris forum IIRC), all that mattered was that she had made the pilot costume and not a Princess Leia one, but the difference between us is that they saw this as a need for a female lead to make girls and women interested in the franchise, but I saw it as illustrating that there was no such need, as there have always been girls and women who have been fans, since the original movie. That young woman did not need "representation" or a "role model."

Just a theory but that old-time fan was a fellow geek and has the power of imagination. All these people who cannot see themseleves unless they are directly represented? These are the normies that have flooded our hobbies and lack imagination. They do not care for the spirit nor the concepts, they care for spectacle and action and love plots.

Its not about 'representation' at all. Its about seizing control of the space and turning into something to exploit. It always works like this

1) demand entry to the space
2) deconstruct the space
3) denounce the space
4) take control of the space
5) purge the space
6) exploit the space.

with these people its all about power and humiliation rituals. They want the space to exploit it, and to ruin it just because you liked it.
