Star Wars Star Wars Discussion Thread - LET THE PAST D-! Oh, wait, nevermind

The romance between Padme and Anakin was also horribly executed. That properly dragged down Attack of the Clones.

Like I said, bad soap. Mind you, though, with a little nudge of the facts/stripping away the extraneous details, that Padme is interested in Anakin surprisingly adds...detail? Context? Nuance...? Whatever, to her character, keeping her from becoming a Mary Sue. Specifically, considering the age gap between her and Anakin, she's either a pedophile, or, depending on whether or not a Jedi of Anakin's age in the movie is a legal adult considering they clearly have license to kill (old enough to kill, old enough to fuck), an ephebophile.

The sequels also basically killed Daisy R's career, too -- everything she's done after Wars have basically been low-exposure projects in comparison to the A List stuff you'd have expected.
So what, she didn't impress me much and she willingly took part in and defended the shit they turned Wars into.

She can listen to the entire fandom playing the world's smallest violins to her for all I care.

Or she just liked the cocky, cute kid in a totally non-sexual, big sister way.
You know, hedpatting the scrappy kid and smiling and calling him so cute when he says he will marry her.

Only afterwards, it turns out he cleaned up nicely and started to make her coochie wet, when they were both legal. :ROFLMAO:
:sneaky:

This development on Vader's part is one of the rare good things Disney did the franchise right, especially since it set the stage for Vader making his first power play against Sidious after ANH. Unlike in Legends where Vader stayed a content little puppet for Sidious (much to the latter's displeasure), Vader's ambition sparked after Sidious made him responsible for the loss of the Death Star. This tied together all the experience he'd gained over the past couple of decades, leading him to build an impressive power base that only got exposed when Doctor Aphra ratted him out to Sidious.

And even then, Sidious was so impressed at what Vader had managed to put together under his nose, and satisfied that Vader was finally, truly thinking like a Sith, that he didn't hold it against him. Instead, he 'rewarded' Vader by telling him who it was who ratted him out, causing Doctor Aphra to run like hell.

I'm shocked at how much I've liked Doctor Aphra's run and honestly, the way they are setting things up (or at least hinting at it) with Luke, my inner Star Wars fan wants to believe she'll become the Disney Equivalent of Mara Jade...and then I have to remind myself that as Mandalorian season 2.5 showed with Luke teaching Grogu, all roads lead to the sequel trilogy so unless the ST and all related material becomes Non-Canon, Luke is condemned to die a cowardly hermit so either Aphra's going to die at some point or nothing is going to come between the two.

Exactly. every Disney Star Wars is tainted by their trilogy. give them no money or support and they will be forced to sell off their assets.

eh I buy what I like and don't what I hate and I'm not going to apologize for it. As it is the comics have been meniscal in terms of profit compared to the massive amounts of overspending that Disney has done.

To be honest, I felt like having a cringey, dysfunctional mess of a relationship was something that "accidentally made sense" for Anakin and Padme, both of whom are highly sheltered in ways that really do not set them up for any sort of healthy adult interactions (with anyone).

Attack of the Clones is set ten years after Phantom Menace, making Anakin 19 and Padme 24. That is a completely normal-range age gap.

yeah there's actually a MUCH bigger age gap between Leia and Han than Padme and Anakin. Once someone is 18 as long as there is consent between both parties all bets are off.

Also, it's not as if she was in contact with him *throughout his childhood* and creepily grooming him for "once he's technically legal"; that was Palpatine.

Not really.

Palpatine's one true fetish was power and he refused to be kinkshamed for it.

I can't remember what the context was but I remeber an episode of DBZ where in order to defeat a villain that absorbed people's kai, Goku essentially went "You want my power?!? HERE HAVE ALL OF IT!!" Essentially Goku was so powerful the villain literally got fed power until he inflated and busted like a balloon MK style. I can't help but think that'd be such a fitting death for Palpatine.

"POWERRRR!!!! UNLIMITED POWWWERRRRR!!!!! BLOOOSH!!! *Erupts in a torrent of blood and gore*

Yeah ol sheeve had creepy pedo tones

In any realistic take, Palpatine had to be super careful about hiding his interest in Skywalker for exactly that reason -- he's enough of a details guy to absolutely realize that was the biggest danger, and he's certainly capable of being very, very careful to ensure his interest was percieved as, "kindly grandfather figure" and later on, "warmhearted mentor and confidant".

That said, one of the very nice touches in Phantom Menace were the hints it dropped at this -- the more overt one is the way Palpatine says he'll be watching Anakin's career "with great interest", but there's a much more subtle one in the musical theming. Because the music for that triumphal march at the end of the movie is actually an adaptation of the Sith theme from RoTJ.

Dr. Who did that too, and is infinitely better than DBZ.

Meh, people who object to the relationship in AotC are typically (culturally, mind) hysterical Americans. No one else really gives a shit. shrug

Besides, as mentioned before, they had no contact throughout the years between tPM and AotC, so nothing shady can be even perceived except for Anakin's innocent childhood crush (which came from his memories of being a nine year old) influencing his decisions.

Hell, the only (non-sexual) grooming that went on was ol' Sidious with Anakin, and that was because he was laying the groundwork for him to become Darth Vader already.

She's a bit of a plain actress yeah, but I don't think/not sure her being part of Wars and being a willing participant in its downfall is a thing, even if she does have a few "women stronk" attitudes herself (from interviews) -- it's hard to tell if that's what she believes or what she was pressured to say (which is a thing in Hollywood, especially under KK's dominance).

Imagine you just got a star role in the latest piece of work in a franchise you've been a fan of since you were a kid.

You sign the contracts.

You're on cloud nine.

And then you read the script.

"Okay, this looks bad, but maybe it can work."

Filming begins.

"Aw, shit. Grin and bear it, Daisy. You got this."

Not everything could be as black and white as it seems.

If she is spouting feminazi propaganda, then my opinion on her goes from meh, whatever, don't care, to she should be made an example of.

There's a very fine line these days -- unfortunately, most people, especially public figures, don't understand that's how people perceive their words/statements regardless of their intentions. shrug

Then again, there are clear cut cases, like Margot Robbie -- physically hot as fuck, but a crazy feminist through and through (though, the Barbie Movie thing was hilarious; being immediately disavowed by Mattel must have stung her ego, lol).
