Epic Twitter thread detailing the history of the Y-Wing on and off the screen.

Check it out, it's pretty epic.

And now, even though I admittedly am not as great a Star Wars fan as some, I find it bittersweet to be looking back at all the lovely ship, weapon and technical designs that came out by both Lucasfilm and the many more spawned by writers, fans, etc.

And little if any of this got incorporated into the "new trilogy". I mean, we saw hints and previews in TFA, but after that...

Star Wars had forty years of expanded universe and lore to build upon, yet Disney threw it all away. I'm not entirely sure why, but I could guess it's a mixture of the Mouse trying (and failing) to make Star Wars its own, and those of an ideological persuasion seeing yet another example of "evil western culture" to tear down. What a farce the modern entertainment industry is.

Is there not a single functioning grey cell left in Hollywood?

One can only imagine how comic book nerds would have reacted if Disney had taken this approach to their comics.

They'd probably be burning effigies of the Mouse, among other things.

The Falklands are Serbian, you cowards.
I think the most depressing part is that nobody expects Star Wars to be a masterpiece, they just want it to be okay.

Star Wars doesn't have to be more than just okay. Mediocrity is fine for what is self-consciously a gigantic toy commercial. The problem is since 2014, every single piece of Star Wars media (yes, even the fake lame Clone Wars retcon show) has been absolute dogshit, and any positive review anyone's ever given of any of them is pure cope from start to finish.

All this Star Wars hand-wringing shows just how useless and harmful being part of a "fandom" is. Fandom is not a real hobby. A hobby involves developing yourself somehow, even if it's a completely useless skill. Even if your hobby is something utterly idiotic, just the act of getting better at something, anything, gives you a sense of accomplishment that doesn't depend on others. That part of your identity involves something you did, even if it's just building plastic models of WWII fighter planes. A "fan," by contrast, only consumes. His next action is simply to buy what someone else has made, like a comic book or movie, and consume it. Because of this, he's completely helpless, so when the next phase of consumption is utter dogshit, like these DisneyWars, it throws his identity into crisis. "Star Wars fan" is now a euphemism for "sucker who uncritically gobbles up dogshit media," which is why he gets angrily, tearfully defensive about them. Fandom isn't about taking pride in your work (however trivial it may be), but in how much you consume. You don't brag about the quality of what you've done, but the quality of what you consume, which is 100% others' work.

If you're really into model trains, and all the model train companies suddenly started producing total garbage, like 100% Thomas the Tank Engine-themed stuff, your ability to continue your hobby isn't aborted. You can buy vintage models, or you can build your own scale model houses and bridges out of basic materials. But if all the new Star Wars content is crap, you can't really do anything. You can either consume it, or give up Star Wars. For the "fan," these aren't just movies like they are for well-adjusted folk. A well-adjusted person will hear about the movies through the grapevine and think "hey that movie sounds like shit; guess I'll find something else to do this weekend." Consuming that content isn't somehow part of who I am, and the fact that it's objectively awful isn't some kind of personal insult or attack on me. But for these hardcore fans, it really is. Their identity as "Star Wars fan" is undermined when the new content is that bad.

That's why fans love the Mandalorian and Fake-Clone-Wars so much. They've got some content to consume that is, while not actually good, at least high quality enough to feel validated by consuming it.

Or well you can enjoy what came before/write fanfic/play Battlefront 2(the good one).

That's still consuming.

More than that-our culture demands "keep up". If your a fan and you absolutely can't stand the current iteration-you feel as if your not really enjoying something, you are enjoying what it was

I mean think of sports-sports fans are depressed when "their" team isn't doing well in a particular season, they usually don't watch recordings of when their team whatever the championship was a decade prior-even though they could.

I only have a preliminary name for it-but we are a very current-centric society. Things must be current, not past. Things which are past are less investable and have thus less value.

Fans derive emotional value and worth from what is produced by others. And I agree that is harmful.

It's a sort of culture that treats everything like it's disposable, demands uniformity with a group, and it's something that has been with us for generations; it's where the concept of a "fad" comes from.

I mean who watches binge watches I don’t know the 1993 College Football season where a certain team won the championship even though they suck now? There are fans that may rewatch a game they recorded or whatever.

An aspect of “fandom” is a psychological and emotional investment in the ongoing, the present, the current.

I don't know what circles you are moving around, but maybe you should take a break from these suckas for a week or two.

True. But now other people can use my bingo card in online discussions if they want, so it's just about breaking even in my mind. Don't feel obligated to credit me or anything either if you use it, I shit this out in like an hour.

We are getting live action Thrawn.

If we're lucky we might also see Mara Jade? I mean, you want Star Wars "girl power", she was an excellent fleshed out character that came out long before Kathleen Kennedy's pet Mary Sue Rey came along.

And BTW....I don't actually hate Rey as much as some do....just wish she had been given better writing, she had such potential. And I like Daisy Ridley....her being easy on the eyes also helps. 😁

Hell, what if in an alternate universe Mara Jade was around to coach Rey toward being another Jedi or Force-user like herself?
