Rian Johnson genuinely believes he is Hollywood’s next auteur avant-garde.

And he isn’t. He’s a mediocre director and average writer(Knives Out is decent but it’s basically an old who dunnit clue plot).

And yeah he knows how to play to film critics. Their biases, their pseudo intellectual pretentiousness.

That’s why a lot of film critics loved TLJ.

I think he meant well when he said that "Star wars does not continue unless these people have their shot", but I would have to reply with "What happens when 'those people' take the shot and miss...and do so for a main entry in the franchise?" Yes, sure, people are going to find aspects of TLJ "Compelling" if they view it as a standalone film without any prior knoweledge...but it should've been able to both stand on it's own AND contribute to the larger trilogy and series which it was part of.

I don’t mind a subversive SW movie.

Heck there are elements in the EU that paint the Jedi or republic in less than heroic or glorious lights. There’s also Treia you know.

I think what Johnson was really interested in was subverting the idea of “hero gains wisdom from past sage” or rather trying to deconstruct that motif of the Hero’s Journey.

Then again-he isn’t nearly as deep to actually think like this.

But he missed his shot.

And honestly-his whole line about “I consider a good movie to be divisive-people love it or hate it” is just...not good art.

Like I get what he is trying to say, a movie should ideally leave an impact. And I will TLJ for actually making people argue.

But the subversion actually has to have something in it-there has to be gold in the chest.

Dividing audiences by making a polarizing movie is not what you want when making a big budget franchise film.

If he had a stand-alone story with a morally ambiguous Jedi or something-sure he could play out his subversions.

Not only are his subversions stupid and empty, they are also inappropriate in place.

Nothing in TLJ is ultimately that deep or reflective.

Best way to tell if a movies good is if "crtics" don't like it.
It honestly depends. Critics are given too much credit. And film theory and what not are pretty useless in terms of whether or not a movie is enjoyable.

Honestly, I gotta say, I am of the belief that this diversity-hiring & political nepotism stuff is something wherein they are concerned ONLY for the guys on top

What about all the other lower level employees? Especially those who so happen to be “minorities”

If they fail, lots of them won’t get their pay

Then again they probably already abused and neglected the log of them

I should have expected that really
Certainly doesn't hurt that Rian is married to a very influential film critic and constantly moves in those circles.
They should have given him Solo and let Ron Howard do Last Jedi, someone who is a safe experienced director who knows how to make a big budget movie.

But they didn't because the people running the show do not understand the show beside it being useful as a megaphone for messages.

Here's the opposite. Canada's police have been busy.

Oh it gets worse, so much worse. As can be seen below when Captain Kir-, I mean, William Shatner had words to say about this incident. (Insert 'proof that Kirk is better then Picard' joke here.)

William Shatner on Twitter

Captain’s Log Stardate 49: Sending my contempt this morning to the @lethpolice of Alberta, Canada & @LPSChief1. Rifles drawn for a plastic toy Cosplayer? Didn’t comply right away? Are you blind Chief? Watch the video to see how quickly she complied. This cannot be covered up.
In response to a rando blaming the victim for carrying a toy laser rifle: William Shatner on Twitter

Oh please! Did you see the gun? Also when she’s on her knees and the officer has his rifle ready to shoot; he is a mere few feet from the gun. If he couldn’t see it was a toy he should retire, yet they continued and slammed her to the ground and bloodied her nose.
The Shatner then learned this police dept has a history of bad behavior: William Shatner on Twitter
Apparently the @lethpolice have a history of in humane & violent acts on innocents and their investigations cast a blind eye to video evidence: * No charges after Lethbridge officer repeatedly ran over deer in January … 🤷🏼‍♂️😢
William Shatner on Twitter

And running over a deer a number of times to kill it by a member of the same department is not indicative of a cognitive problem? The video shows it but internal investigations found no issues? You advocate we need to keep quiet because...????🤷🏼‍♂️ There is a problem in that Dept.*
In response to someone complaining of "backseat driving": William Shatner on Twitter
Are you a police officer sporto? What did the deer 🦌 do to the officer that he had to run over him numerous times? There’s no denying police officers have grueling jobs but killing a deer by running over it back & forth and taking down an unarmed 19 year old woman is a bit much
* Apparently this is the same police department that thought a reasonable way to put down an deer injured from being hit by a car was to run it over again. After the deer screamed, the officer just ran it over again, another 4 times.

The phrase 'What the actual fuck is wrong with these people' seems quite inadequate. That said, I did see a fantastic comment on the matter:
Welcome to Justin Trudeau's Canada. Where they banned all black scary guns including plastic Stormtrooper blasters because the only thing that should be black and scary in Canada is Justin Trudeau's face**.

**In reference to various pictures of the Canada's PM wearing blackface that have surfaced in recent years.

Mandalorian news....

So rumour is Temuera Morrison is going to show up in the Mandalorian.

Boba fuckin Fett getting some justice at last :p

Though with additional rumours about Asoka possibly showing up, maybe he's not Boba but Rex?

Is it weird that the one thing I got out of all that is actually wondering what would happen if a post-Knightfall pre-Mustafar Duel Vader was dropped in the Sequel Trilogy, now that we know everything about it?
