Star Wars Star Wars Discussion Thread - LET THE PAST D-! Oh, wait, nevermind

Rian Johnson essentially admitted in recent interviews that he was trying to kill the Star Wars franchise with The Last Jedi; talking about his disdain for the very concept of intellectual property and franchises, and wanting to give it an ending akin to a "Viking funeral" that left no room for continuation.

I would almost respect the flex if that was actually the case.

Except I'm pretty sure it's a case of Rian Johnson years-after attempted ass-covering and principle-erection since he can't really do the 'It was my subverting expectations-y masterpiece!' anymore and get away with it since...yeah, it's pretty-commonly accepted how significantly the Last Jedi split the fanbase and flopped in its purpose. Him running with 'No, I totally was making a principled stand on intellectual properties coming to a satisfying conclusion even though I was working for Disney on a midpoint-film.' isn't very believable.

Plus, if his goal was seeing things off in grand ending...Well, the movie's been discussed to death, but I think it can be reasonably be said that it a lot of people didn't take it as a well-executed funeral piece farewell.

I...I just have this suspicion that Rian Johnson is either not a very good filmmaker (what I trend towards because Knives Out was dull and Looper only kind'a fun serviceable), or, in more charitable interpretation, an inexperienced one who got brought-on by Disney because...I dunnow, Abrams was busy or something?

He just quoted a spammer who got nuked, but by quoting him the spam message was in the quote box. So I removed it

Gotcha'.

Guess I best not quote spammers if I want my posts to remain un-branded by that "last editing" tagline, huh? :sneaky:

Honestly I wouldn't have minded the ghost intervention thing if we got some cool army on army lightsaber action between the ghost and the sith acolytes.

Also I'd argue that it could be argued that Obi-wan said he couldn't interfere not because he couldn't do it physically, but because his presence would only make the situation worse (which to be honest it would have)

Yeah, Yoda was kinda an ass not to warn Luke about the Force Lightening.

Frankly, maybe a lot of the heartache everyone went through could've been avoided if Yoda were less cryptic — and more prone to taking action when he learned about the Clones' chips or his revealing pilgrimage to Moraband, among other bombshells.

Sure, Sidious might've sensed the winds shifting if the Grandmaster got off his ass, but given how badly Yoda's complacency worked out in Canon, he could hardly have done worse by being proactive instead of resigned.

Watching a few clips of Bad Batch, and sometimes I feel the zero to one hundred writing attitude to imperial atrocities is a tad eye rolling.

The Empire were always the bad guys, but back in the Original Trilogy it felt more like a cold, uncaring order than the chaotic evil it is today. And I genuinely miss that Empire as it was a damn imposing force to deal with ninety percent of the time.

Kind of like the IOM in Warhammer 40,000? It isn't that the Empire has it out for you directly it's just that things tend to slip through the cracks. That is especially true when you can lose planets due to a rounding error.

Ah, comic writers and not doing their research before writing. Well throw another log on the "Vader is slow as molasses" pile.

Actual non-force-using fencers are significantly faster than that, they move their foils faster than professional race cars drive and are comparable to bullets on a lunge.
Yeh I was like dang I knew Vader was slow but he's not even breaking sub-sonic speeds here. This is an outright anti feat for Jedi who have fought Vader and couldn't blitz him lol 🤣
