All the above as well as Zilenski's tasteless posturing and stupidity have made me rather enthusiastic about the Russians dealing with the situation swiftly.

As to pro-EU people, well the USA, Canada, Spain, Sweden, Poland and the baltics can take them in the very unlikely event that Ukraine is re-annexed or turned into a puppet state of Russia.

It's not unlikely that a new government will be formed that is amicable to Russia, it's assured. And when half the country voted for further EU integration exile won't be possible to all of them and so my point of what will happen if Ukraine falls still stands.

However, Putin hasn't sent the supporters of Nemtsov and Navalny to GULAGs, so I doubt he will do it with pro-EU Ukrainians, it might be surprising but in Russia you can protest and cirticise the government or vote for the likes of Navalny.

I imagine they will be angry, but they did help orchestrate an US-backed coup against the lawfully-elected government, so their feelings do not matter to me.
I doubt they will be dragged to GULAGs though, but there is always the old, what goes around - comes around.
The majority IMO have nothing to fear unless they start taking part in military actions.

I'm not going to comment on the war as such other than saying that anbody who read the Clash of Civilizations twentyfive years ago and didn't buy into Fukuyama's bullcrap knew that eventually this would go down, the specifics of how it started not withstanding.

What bothers me is how shit the German news coverage, whether it's the state channels or the private "news" channels like NTV, has been so far most likely will continue to be. Quite frankly, I watched NTV with my wife for two and half hours yesterday, and they weren't able to come up with half the information (true or fake) that had been gathered in this thread up until that time.

This is a real shooting war. I want military experts on TV. I want to know who is fighting where, I want to know where the front lines are, I want to see the combat footage and vids of troops in motion. I want talks about what the likely course of action is. I want to know how we will react to this, how it will influence Germany's military policy. Hell, I want to know if our glorious government might actually get their heads out of their collective asses about energy dependence and the whole green energy fiasko.

German state media receives more than 8 billion Euros p.a. in funding. And all I get for this is cut sound bites that tell me absolutely nothing about the state of the war, but only manage to highlight the incompetence of our leaders and media "professionals". I shouldn't need to go to Tiktok and Twitter to get that kind of info.

How about when we post our shit takes and tweets we just add qualifying language to it. Use words like "according to" "allegedly" and "reportedly" for example.

Or when critiquing takes realize that it's likely impossible to know the truth and as Joe Rogan says "It's entirely possibly X or Y" could be a thing but IMO it's X. This is why.

Yeah I had my doubts about that story, refusing to give up against a warship when you have no weapons to counter it, isn't feasible an ask, since you are asking people to die for no actual purpose. I am fine with last stands if they achieve something but if the only thing you cost the enemy is a little ammo, it is not a sensible idea at all.

None of this excuses the Russian invasion though, nor does the timing of it only coming out after hostilities had commenced lend it credibility. On the off-chance it was true, Putin could have gone about this a better and less destructive way.

What I do know is that last I heard Russia was trying to also threaten Finland and Sweden over NATO membership, which seems like they may be the next targets.

I have no objection to letting Sweden in, and Finland already has its own wonky deal with the West.

Basically their AA missiles are 30+ years old, even if regularly refurbished the failure chance increases with age and due to corruption it's doubtful their inventory received much maintenance beyond the ready to use stock and since 2014 all money went to ground combat forces.
