News of the Amused

I would point out -- having recently learned this via boater safety course -- that all ships dump sewage in the ocean.

Under the terms of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, signatory nations only agree to prohibit the dumping of unprocessed marine sewage less than twelve nautical miles off the coast and the dumping of processed marine sewage less than three nautical miles off the coast. And even that very limited rule is poorly enforced.

It probably isn't just that they're dumping sewage, but where (over coral reefs), and over an extended period of time.
Yeah, this kinda thing can cause all sorts of problem for reef ecosystems and fisheries.

China has an atrocious environmental record, and are responsible for more animals becoming endangered or threatened than any other nation.

This is just the latest in thier fuck-ups.

Dumping should only be done in deep water away from currents that are headed to shore, so waste breaks down before it gets to the shallows.

Wait, is that from just the ships? Considering the fact that they're visible from orbit, I'd assumed that instead of processing the waste in facilities like what happens in the west, they were just collecting the waste from their cities and then dumping it out into the ocean. The articles I read didn't specify that they were only from the ships.

The image you linked, and the recent controversy, are over a report from the analytics firm Simularity which claims that their AI-based satellite image processing shows massive environmental damage in the South China Sea due to waste dumps from Chinese fishing ships. Note that what you're seeing in the image isn't actually the sewage dumps, but larger-than-normal algae blooms allegedly triggered by the nutrients *in* the waste.

The study was commissioned by an independent think tank in the Phillipines; the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs states that they will have to assess and validate the claims themselves before taking any official diplomatic action. That's pretty reasonable considering that this is yet another one of those "our computer model extrapolates environmental disaster" situations, and it's worth pointing out that at least one of the pictures which the analytics firm claimed showed Chinese vessels dumping waste in the Spratlys this year was later shown to actually be an Australian ship dumping waste in the area of the Great Barrier Reef back in 2014. The firm acknowledged that this was the case, but claims that the dishonest photo was merely for "illustrative purposes" and did not affect the accuracy of the report.

At this point the Russian new sites are more trustworthy than any Western new outlet.

This is the society we live in.

God save Putin and long may he reign!

I thought this was a parody at first glance.

Then I discovered it was real (since taken down for obvious reasons). But as you all know, the internet doesn't forget.

Thanks for posting the archive link. It certainly reads like a parody at some points.

I found the line of "What good are they, if not to serve as warnings to others who dare to question our tolerance?" to be particularly humorous in an ironic way.

Which I guess marks me as part of the 'far right.' Because I apparently have a sense of humor.

Part of me thinks that it was posted as a joke, like something you'd see in the Babylon Bee but I can easily see some SJW thinking exactly this and posting it unironically and meaning it 1000%.

[Edit]

The felony charges for endangering kids comes from the gun not being kept in a gun safe.

A... are you certain this is meant seriously? The language in it reads like a parody. Really obvious parody.

That's pretty bullshit, so my laughter in this case comes from the fact that she more than likely supported the law she's being charged under.
Yeah, the charge is ridiculous, but I'm a fan of petards so she can suck the minor inconvenience until her buddy on the bench dismisses the case for accidentally being applied to a patrician.
