What I find interesting about this is how quickly men catch up. For all that women dominate educationally in highschool and into lower level college and university, men are only 15% behind in total PhD's.
Boys are also much more likely to die before reaching adulthood than girls.

"Men are expendable. Women are not."

Paraguay took that so far during a war that the aftermath included the Catholic Church basically saying that polygamy was ok, just this once, because there weren't many adult men left.

men are very used to the fact that life is fundamentally unfair, boys are not sheilded from this fact and this reality, the ones that are not crushed underfoot after years and decades of bullshit are people who either learned how to suck up and kiss ass or have learned how to become very capable.

Women by contrast are systematically protected and coddled by the government and society to an extent that would be considered ridiculous. When some one who has been coddled their entire life goes into an actual compitition for the first time....

Possibly. The other thing to consider is that women tend towards the center of the bell-curve, while men tend wards the ends. PhD research is largely based on persistence and gaining favors from academic influencers, but intelligence is also a part of it. If men are able to almost be equal despite being continuously discriminated against in education their entire lives, then that means that these guys are: really good at sucking up, black/gay/trans/other intersectional that trumps female, or brilliant/determinator.

Adult men are, on average, slightly smarter than adult women. We're also much less cautious and prone to being exteremely stupid.

Like testing the main electrical circuit of a Balao-class submarine by touching it with their bare hands while standing in seawater levels of reckless and stupid.

I've worked with an engineer who actually did that and was confused by my "Are you insane?" reaction.

Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment. Because you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it.

Last I checked, there's a direct correlation between testosterone levels and tendency towards Autism. Not 'more Testosterone means you're more autistic,' but you're more likely to be autistic.

So yes, it very much is sex-related.
Again, is that because men ARE more likely to be Autistic or is it that we aren't looking hard enough, or is it that girls are better at hiding it or just differing expressions of it?

Unless that study was doing something much more original than comparing diagnoses rates NONE of those questions stop applying.

That's a good point. If there is a relation already known with sex hormones, and sex hormones are known to affect other kinds of behaviors as well, then it would not be unreasonable to suggest that they could cause a different expression.

One of the key studies I read up on specific was comparing what infants paid attention to. This is like six day-old infants, put in front of a set of different images. Boys were much more likely to look at images of objects, girls were much more likely to look at faces, exceptfor girls who had an unusual condition where they were exposed to much higher levels of pre-natal testosterone. It's been a couple years now, and I forget if it was the same study following up years later, or another study, which demonstrated that autism was tightly linked to high object-fixation.
