If the rail-road companies avoid LA... wow. I mean, LA is already doomed, but that would be like the final nail. The general cost of goods would sky-rocket and there'd be all kinds of knock-on effects.

This would require the supply chains for the entire western half of the nation to be completely reorganized. Given how overly-dependent they currently are on LA, this would probably be a good thing, but the transition would be rough.

Of course, if UP decides to pull out, rather than is abruptly forced by some disaster, that would mean they could do it in stages as they prefer.
